David Archuleta wants to know: What was so great about 'Imagine'?

May 28, 2008, 12:04 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Idolatry

I kid you not...as you'll see in part 1 of our interview with this season's American Idol runner-up, he's still trying to understand why the nation went nuts over his week-two semifinal performance of John Lennon's classic; part 2, meanwhile, finds him discussing the "magic rainbow" found in the lyrics of the season 7 victory anthem, "The Time of My Life." Check back tomorrow for part 3 with Archie (update: click here to see it), as well as our chat with reigning Idol champ David "Happy Trails" Cook. (And look out for Syesha "Wonder Woman" Mercado on Friday!)

Hey Mr. Slezak...or whatever you call yourself these days. Only David Archuleta can sing IMAGINE the way he does. AMAZING! He is invited to the White House Inauguration party and I hope he can sing this song. How amazing will that be. IMAGINE ALL THE PEOPLE LIVING LIFE IN PEACE...even you Mr. Sleeeeebak, might learn something from this young man. Nothing but VOCAL PERFECTION and you are still a little person, who is not so talented, even McDonalds has no job offers for you...they do not hire negative people to even flip hamburgers...service with a smile. Learn something from David Archuleta. You might actually look in the mirror and like yourself for a change.. GO DAVID ARCHULETA..:)

gp Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 11:01 PM EST

Michael, I have listened to his comments on his performance singing "Imagine". He was not saying that the song "Imagine" was not great, but that he couldn't understand how they could think that his singing of "imagine" was that great! WHY did you twist his feeling?
LISTEN AGAIN!

At least in reposting these interview videos, Popwatch isn't encouraging the fan wars, so I'll give the site a hit and a comment.

David sparkled in these interviews. Love the kid.

designer4davida Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 11:32 PM EST

I have to say that the 3 interviews that Michael did are right up there at the top of my favorites... (along with the Fox Washington DC interview and the z100 interview when Crush played on the radio for the first time). I would love to see Michael do another interview with David!!

goboywonder Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

This interview is like an old classic to me that I keep coming back to time after time.

joanie Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 10:21 AM EST

rachel, I completely agree with you. So now let's see another interview, Michael Slezak. Please.

rachel Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 07:13 AM EST

One if the very best interviews of David. Michael did a superb job. Some interviewers are not skilled and that's why some of David Archuleta's interviews don't capture his essence. I have watched these interviews twice and bought David's single and video Crush. No wonder some people traveled all the way from Singapore and Japan to see David in concert. He's someone special and I am a fan for life. I am 46 and proud to be a fan.

joanie Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

davidfan4ever, I completely agree with you. And,Val, I am thrilled that this enterview has surfaced again.Love the interview and love David Archuleta!

davidafan4ever Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

What wasn't incredible about imagine ths guy is so amazing you gotta love him!

val Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 09:06 AM EST

Interesting that this old interview keeps appearing, but so what? For any of you that need an update, David's new single and video CRUSH hit the no 1 Itunes spot within 24 hours of its release, also, the No 2 spot on the Billboard. That is pretty incredible for this young man who did not even win AI, obviously his talent speaks for itself. Even if you have not heard David Archuleta sing Imagine yet, treat yourself to the recent version of Imagine he sang in September at the Ford Day mini concert. Go to Uube and type David Archuleta Ford day. Incredible!!! His voice still gives me chills. I hope he adds this to his CD. As far as Sleezak, well he must be eating all his nasty words by now that he made about David Archuleta in the past. David A's fans are not only teens but of all ages and I am 45. Download CRUSH and his video, it is awesome! Go DAvid Archuleta cant wait for the CD in November 2008.

KathyH Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 06:05 AM EST

I love that this video keeps popping up when I search for DArchuleta news. I rewatch it. The interview, and David, sparkled.

librado Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

hey!! davida's fans!! it's coming soon the day it will be november 11th finally we can buy davida's album im sure that it will be a great success its what he deserves so fans be ready for that big day.

support, support david archuleta more than ever!!!don't forget it!!

sam Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

WOW Sleezak. Eating your words much now? David Archuleta might be even able to teach you a few things about keeping an open mind in the entertainment business, because you never know, the talent you put down, might turn around and big huge stars and then you just look another darn fool anyway. I suggest another interview with David Archuleta. He is now proven that not only is he marketable and has fans of all ages, but Michael learn something. Not all rockers are successful. Some of the older fans, we don't find rockers unique anymore. I love David Archuleta, CRUSH is awesome and the video is even more refreshing in a world of videos full of explicit material, loudness and plain no talent and gimmicks. You might even develop a CRUSH on his talent now. :) BRAVO David Archuleta, you are MY AMERICAN IDOL and I am 45 years old.

joanie Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

This interview was great! And now David's music video is available at itunes! He just keeps getting better!

joanie Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 08:36 PM EST

I agree that Michael Slezak should review the recent buzz surrounding David Archuleta and do another great interview with him.

mandt Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

David A. is a wonderful singer and teriffic person. I also think Mr. Slezak needs to do another interview with David now that so much is happening for him.

joanie Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

Love parts 1 and 2 of the three interviews of David Archuleta by Michael Slezak

joanie Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

I noticed that part 3 of this interview popped up on my browser today and I'm hoping to see parts 1 and 2 appear, also. They are all wonderful.

joanie Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

did I mention David's lips? ahhh

joanie Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

Just watched this interiew again and am reminded of what an amazing person David Archuleta is! His humility, his graciousness, his eyes, his smile, his personality, his expressive hands, his singing....sigh!

joanie Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

Michael, please do MORE interviews with David Archuleta, now that his single "Crush" hit #1 on itunes within the first 19 hours of its release. This first interview was great!

joanie Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

Yo, Mary!
You're in luck, because David Archuleta's first single "Crush" is available on itunes, amazon.com, etc. right NOW! Oh, and it's is amazing.

Mary Knisely Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

Forgot to mention that I will definitely buy every cd david A. makes. And I can hardly wait for the first one to be released, hope its real soon.Only one I voted for, sorry he did not win.

Mary Knisely Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

David sings this song IMAGINE that really warns my heart, just like all of the other ones.He has a voice that no matter what he sings, brings joy to me.

Rose Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

I guess one of the previous posters said it best, the reason some people couldn't see what David Archuleta was about had more to do with the hating going on inside themselves. And I'm very glad that David A. is a much bigger person than I because I don't have much respect for Sleazy.

joanie Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

What was so great about "Imagine"? The same thing that makes all David's songs great...David himself!

gig em Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

I can only "Imagine" what a beautiful soul this young man is. He voice - his personality - what a difference from the egotistical drug taking celebs of today!

Michele Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 10:52 PM EST

Hes adorable. I dont know if it gets cuter than this.. Ughh he is soo adorable.!!!

joanie Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

Michael, I DO love these interviews you did with David Archuleta. I have watched all three videos repeatedly because I can't get enough of "that thing" that David has in abundance. I will keep watching these videos, but I want you to repeat the magic by interviewing him again. I sound like a broken record......

Michele Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 06:52 PM EST

Hes soo cute!

davidmysuperstar Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

David Archuleta is so awesome. These interviews prove that he is such a great person who really cares for others. He has always been my favorite singer on AI this season and believe his new song "CRUSH" will make #1 nationally.

go Archie Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

Archie is so cool. I'm planning to buy his new album..He is soc cute and talented!

accord Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 02:24 AM EST

How ironic, the man who worked so hard to get people to not like David Archuleta is the man who in this interview, helped people to know and love David. I'm sure that going into this interview Sleazak thought he was going to show how right he was about all the mean things he written, but David showed himself to be humble yet charming and intelligent. He never backed off from even the hard questions and showed a lot of class. David was a delight. Loved this interview and Mr. Sleazak, I bet you feel a little guilty for your former treatment of this truly amazing young man. Thanks anyway.

Kait Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

I watched these videos when they were first published -- but when they popped up on my internet search this morning I watched again. David has a ton of charm. If I thought they'd watch it, I'd send a link to the people who STILL insist that David has 'no personality.'

Keith Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 03:34 AM EST

Hope my kids grow up just like David...talented/humble/nice/great personality... Damn , who would not want their children like David....I have to say Kudos to his parents to raise this kid to be as he is now.. WOW.....

anne Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 01:45 AM EST

Hi! I'm from the Philippines. We've watched David A's performances several times during the AI stint (and that included all re-runs in a cable channel and in the local channel) and we just can't get tired of watching this amazing person sing his heart out. He is so charming and adorable and so true. He is one best singer that AI has ever produced. We certainly love David Archuleta here. Can't wait to buy his CD. Crush has a great market potential not only in the US but in many countries as well. He is really destined for superstardom. We do hope that he can do a concert in Manila.

joanie Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

Michael, love this interview with David Archuleta. You did a great job. David did a great job. Very satisfying. I think people are finally seeing the substance behind the voice of David Archuleta. And, he's a doll. Please: new interview with David post idol!

Alex Gómez Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 09:09 AM EST

Great interview. I don't know why I didin't see it before. Great questions and great answers. One thing I've been intrigued to know is the role of support Jeff has played. I know that it was at great sacrifice that Jeff basically had to stay with David during the competition. The Archuletas are not wealthy people that could have afforded a long vacation for Jeff. How did they do and what's David's take on the support his father gave him and continues to give him. BTY I never swallowed the "Stage Dad" stories. I think that those were malicious comments made by a very bitter real TV "Stage Mom" Naomi Judd.

Taylor Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 02:54 AM EST

This was a really great interview...I love david, but it makes me love him even more that he's getting more mature and better at interviews :)

melanie Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

i'm 22 and i am obsessed with david archuleta because he has the best voice EVER and a stellar personality. i saw him live in Atlantic City on Saturday and he hugged me.... amazing. i can't stop listening to "crush" .... everyone i know loves the song...my friends (many of which are Cook fans), my sister, my dad, my grandma, my mom. it appeals to all ages and genders, just like archie.

i will stand by him forever!

Hey, I am in my 50's, and I love crush. Yah, it is R&B or whatever, the fans love it not just because it is good but because it is sang by David Archuleta Get it????
David will be up there among the great singers. His talent is not only for tweens or teenager, but for mature people as well. Yah, there's a lot of hottie out there like Miley Cyrus, Jonas Bros, etc, but there style is a "fad" It will fade away someday. But for a talent that David Archueta has and his persona, in my opinion, he is a legend in the making!!!!!!

Chasee Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:18 AM EST

WEll whatever, But CRUSH is INCREDIBLE and I am a woman in my 40's and not a grandma or tween. I saw Archuleta LIVE on Sat. 8/2 in Atlantic City's AI Idol and anybody that doubts this young man's talent should be considered brain dead. He is here to stay and CRUSH is just the beginning of his incredible singing career.

I'm not sure why this "old" article suddenly reappeared on today's search for news about D.A., but it reminded me that I would still love to hear Mr. Slezak's post-interview impressions of David. I can't help but think he must have been impressed. I was.

ToMichaelSlezak Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 09:19 PM EST

Michael Slezak, I have to applaud you for this interview. You listened, you were respectful and I think you really engaged David to open up with your questions.

I really hope, Mr. Slezak, that you will do a follow-up article on your post AI impression of David. I don't expect you will suddenly think DA should have won all along and obviously you have every right to have a preference. But I can't believe that in retrospect you don't feel somewhat bad about some of your comments now that you have met and spoken with David. You laughed and really seemed to enjoy speaking with him and I hope you want to set the record straight. Please, please, please write this article. I would love to hear what you thought about Syesha as well. :)

Thanks again

rockyp Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

Excellent interview. This is the DA that stole my heart at his audition & throughout the competition and, for me, was crowned the American Idol on the finale performance night. No disrespect to Cook or the others, but no one can even come close to DA's vocal brilliance... no one.

I don't know who Slezak is (just came here to see DA) but think he did a good interview. If he did call DA "empty inside", I'll just say this reaffirms the shallowness of our manic society and our lack of ability to comprehend anything beyond a sound bite. This kid is gifted and we should all have one ounce of his depth and beauty.

DA is a rare talent and there are plenty of music lovers with the depth and attention span to listen and watch as a true artist develops.

Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 06:45 AM EST

Who cares about interview style? I dont.. When I like an Artist I dont sit back and say.. " If he don't do well in interviews he shouldnt get a deal or win!"

edge Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 09:23 PM EST

Little David was so simple and true from day one of AI. The kid just did what he does best - to sing his heart out. No acting or pretending to pull votes for him. Notwithstanding his popularity and talent, he remained the same person. That's great character at such a young age! His parents did the right thing guiding him all these years. Maybe we can all learn something here in raising our own kids. On his interpretation of "Imagine", John Lennon should be very proud of this kid. Little David did not only revive his composition but also brought it to a new level of passion and classiness.

Momo Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 08:42 PM EST

frankly, i really wanted archie to win..but at the same time im glad that he made it much easier for cook to get a deal....i mean really, it shouldnt be so hard for archie to get a deal? right?

archie Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 07:26 PM EST

so cute!

ShayK Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 06:56 AM EST

I keep reading in the comments about how Slezak's interviewing skills helped David interview well and somehow this offset his often personally focused agenda concerning Archuleta in previous Idolotry pieces throughout the season.

Slezak did a good job on the 3 interivew series with David but lets give just due to David who actually is the one who should be credited in interviews when something more than sound bites are allowed. Below is just one example of a myriad that we can view of David's interview style:

http://www. youtube. com/watch?v=W_U7Mi-YA34 - take out the spaces

Slezak's treatment of Archuleta in Idolatry did go beyond what he ususally does for other AI contestants.

Archuleta is a graceful and sophisticated interviewee given the opportunity and crediting Slezak with anything related to Archuleta's interview skills is frankly vile.

Simone-CJW Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 12:45 AM EST

David is definitely a musician with a purpose. His passion is shown through his eyes and his easy and charming smile( and his mesmerizing voice, of course). I can't wait to get my hands on his album.
~Go Archie!!!Keep up your great personality=)

Liz Sat, May 31, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

Thanks to Michael Slezak for his thoughtful and respectful interviews of David Archuleta. Michael actually treated David as an artist, something I haven't seen in other interviews that dealt mostly with trivia. I learned some fascinating things about song choices and David's sense of himself that I've not seen anywhere else.

siena Sat, May 31, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

a miserable childhood? haha...

coco Sat, May 31, 2008 at 02:21 AM EST

What is wrong with Slezak? Did he have a miserable childhood or is he jealous...WHAT?! David is definately NOT "empty inside". He has such a beautiful soul...just look at how his eyes light up!!

Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:37 PM EST

Oh wow. What a fight goin' on here.

I love David Archuleta.

JohnnyBoy Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:23 PM EST

Sorry to have to point out the obvious, but a few weeks ago, Slezak called David "empty inside". Everyone, watch this three part interview and tell me whether it is Slezak or David who has the excitement, optimism, love of life and music, and sparkle in the eyes. On the other hand, who seems "empty inside". I can't get over the delicious irony of it all.

coco Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:01 PM EST

Great interviews!! David has always been amazing at expressing himself on stage when performing and he has come such a long way in such a short time when expressing himself through speech. He's absolutely amazing when you think about how painfully shy he was when he first started out on this journey through AI. He's only 17, just imagine what a few years of life's experiences will do for him when dealing with the public. When you think of the difference in ages between Cook and Archie, eight years is HUGE. Can anyone deny that they didn't mature significantly between the age of 17-25?
I think he will be a HUGE success!! I can't wait for his CD to come out. I love to watch him perform and I LOVE to listen to his awesome voice. He is the only one I listen to these days!

Justin Castillo Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:38 PM EST

just saw David Cook's 4th and 5th video. He's not Greg Brady. He's Johnny Bravo. Only better. As for future music, I'd love to see country in his future.

coco Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:10 PM EST

Never mind, I finally found part 3 of Archie.

coco Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:00 PM EST

Ok, I'm really upset because I can't get the link to Part 3!! I click on ai at the upper left and then video and all I can get are David Cook (all 5 parts) and NO Archie. What's going on? I don't want to see anymore cook...give me David Archuleta!!

Mo-Dean Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

I was a Cookie person, but DA is such a nice fellow. Love him.

Re the series: I didn't come away with anything meanspirited there - except occasionally toward the judges, who absolutely a hundred million percent had it coming. Sometimes they called something out, but that's their job. I love the tone of Idolatry - it's a lot like Wednesday morning workplace talk, only with smarter, cooler people. Who have access to special effects.

JohnnyBoy Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

Well said, Slezak Fan. Except the part about Slezak and his colleagues being "gifted and talented journalists". He isn't exactly writing Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism pieces here and he definitely is not being held to any ethics or standards of journalism.

That being said, you can appropriately use gifted and talented to describe David Archuleta.

Slezak Fan Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

There is no question that Slezak and his colleagues are very gifted and talented journalists. I watched all of the idolatry segments from this season and usually found them to be clever and insightful. I must admit, however, that I sometimes found the commentary to be inconsistent, gratuitously provocative and, on occasion, unnecessarily mean-spirited. Perhaps Slezak’s passion for the show is both his greatest strength and weakness. On the positive side, being such a long-time and committed fan of American Idol enabled him to conduct extraordinary interviews with the finalists this week. Conversely, it was apparent that, like most rank-and-file fans this season, Slezak became very invested in certain contestants and his loyalty and predisposition for certain contestants and musical styles too often contaminated his objectivity during the course of the show. Slezak has been very critical of the judges for showing favoritism this season. How ironic?

ZzKing Fri, May 30, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

3 great interviews. David A has such class and sophistication. Loved his "rainbow" analogy acknowledging how he thinks people view him and the "raft" simile for missing lyrics--also loved that he pointed out he missed lyrics in his audition.

Sorry Sleazak fans, Sleazak did go overboard in his assignation of David A's character--it wasn't just poking fun or journalistic freedom--it went way past anything remotely acceptable even in tabloid media.

Unknowingly, David vindicates himself in this 3 interview series--how sweet--and Sleazak had to be the vehicle for such--sounds like Sleazak paid back a karmic debt bigtime, hmmmm.......

pmbe Fri, May 30, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

i've honestly enjoyed watching these idolatry clips over the season despite slezak & company's unnecessarily cruel (albeit humorous) comments. as for these clips of his interview w/DA (so awesome!) i've watched a couple of times trying to figure-out whether/not slezak is actually enjoying the interview. unfortunately i have to say for the most part he looks 'pained' and i'm fairly certain not in the least bit embarrassed or regretful of his comments about DA over the season. too bad.

Maureen Gordon Fri, May 30, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

David A is a CLASS ACT!!! People can complain about different aspects of American Idol, but David A has managed to transcend all that. His young spirit has touched my older soul and made relate to a young heart. I, too, often "IMAGINE" us living as one often and I am so glad God has given him a gift for all of us to take a moment to ponder PEACE.

Lindy Fri, May 30, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

Part 3 is under David Cook's videos under American Idol in the top right-hand corner of this screen I think. You have to scroll down and let everything come into the screen.

Deanna Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

Also, how about really listening to the heartfelt answers, instead of always trying to come up with some "clever" next question!

Deanna Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

Slezak I watched your interviews, and find you to be hypocritical. If David Archuleta knew you were so nasty, he would have said a prayer for you. You need all the prayers you can get. You come across as very unfeeling in your interviews. He could teach you a thing or two about life and he is only 17! It seems you are in the right profession, but how do you sleep at night?

elizabeth Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

Heavyblow, you are right. Everytime he sings a song it is different. He feels it. I have seen the other contestants perform the same songs again and they sound the same. This sets DA apart from them.

The very fact that David doesn't know why "Imagine" was so affecting *is* the reason why it and he was so good.

And when you do things intuitively, you are unconsciouis of your action and the effect and the observers are much more connected with you. David sings (especially with this song) from the heart and intuitively, not by design like many other contestants do (including Cook). He's not conscious of trying to do this and that to the song. It was simply HEARTFELT.

I THINK THAT DAVID ARCHULETA IS GREAT, HE MAY NEED JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE STAGE PRESENCE, BUT HE HAS IT!!! THAT SMILE MELTS MY HEART...I HOPE THAT HE CONTINUES TO DO HIS THING. BEST OF LUCK IN THE FURTURE!!!!

After listening to his videos on You Tube, I've decided I can't wait for his first CD -- I have to finally learn on to download songs off YTunes from the American Idol website. I want to get "Imagine", "Stand By Me" for sure!!

I think Slezak just got caught up in the competition of the show. This interview showed that Slezak is genuinely a fan of Idol and while he may not agree with everything that goes on during the show, he is able to be a solid bridge for Idol fans. Also, wow, this was Archie's best interview yet. Really, I am impressed. The rainbows comment made me realize that he does know his audience and hey, the kid's funny, too!!!

where is part three?????? i'm dying to see the rest of this..

and for any Archies out there who are dogging Cook.. cut it out.. David A wouldn't be very proud of his fans who talk trash about his good friend, David Cook. Represent, man!!!

We just love David Archuleta. He has great talent but still very humble. He has not shown any sign of bitterness for not winning the AI title. He has only good words for Cook. That I think is a plus factor to this young man. In that sense he has shown great signs of maturity. We anticipate his superstardom. 'Hope that he will keep on singing his heart out. We will surely buy his records here in Asia. We love you David Archuleta ! mwahhhhhh !

Extending the voting to 4 hours put Archuleta at a decided disadvantage. His strength lies with the 'tween' vote whereas Crook's is a more adult audience. Fans on the coasts had until 1:00 a.m. to cast votes. Now what parents will let their 10 year olds stay up on a school night until 1:00 a.m. voting for a TV show? It doesn't take a genius to figure out that Crook's fans had 2-3 hours longer than Archuleta's target fanbase to vote. They should have left the voting at 2 hours (better yet, 1 hour) and added more phone circuits. Of course that would cut into their extravagant profits.

David A was not robbed. Cook did not sing out of his "league" ( whatever the h**l you mean by that statement ) This is a free world and everyone has THEIR OWN TASTE! Just because YOU didn't like someone doesn't mean your neighbor didn't.
