Trailer Blazer: 'Choke'

May 28, 2008, 11:00 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Movie Trailers

When EW critic Owen Gleiberman saw the Chuck Palahniuk adaptation Choke at Sundance earlier this year, he described it as "an indelibly warped cartoon of lust and despair." That's certainly how it comes off in this trailer for the film (due in September), which is streaming over at MTV's Overdrive. Sam Rockwell plays the latest in his gallery of lovable nutjobs, a sex addict who works at a colonial theme park and has a sexually thwarted relationship with the hottie doc (Kelly Macdonald) who's taking care of his senile mom (Anjelica Huston). This doesn't look as daringly anarchic as David Fincher's screen version of Palahniuk's Fight Club, either because the story is more low-key or because actor-turned-screenwriter/director Clark Gregg (best known as Julia Louis-Dreyfus' ex on The New Adventures of Old Christine) is no David Fincher. Still, this looks like absurd, ironic fun — at least if you're a guy. Not sure how many women are going to want to see this; what say you, female PopWatchers?

I'm female and I LOVED the trailer. Sam is my favorite actor, so I will be lined up for the first showing.

we have to read the book for July book club meeting.. so I may have to see this just to compare to the book.

The trailer sucks. Still, I'm seeing it because Sam's in it. ^_^

I didn't really like the book, it's actually one of my least favorite of Palahniuk's novels. BUT...I never could resist me some Palahniuk.

stephanie Wed, May 28, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

I actually hated the book and I'm a huge palahniuk fan. it's been awhile since I read the book and the trailer seems funnier than the book was. I'll probably wait till it comes out on dvd

cedricgirl Wed, May 28, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

it had me at "historical interpreter"

Miriam Wed, May 28, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

I am a female and also saw it at Sundance. I really liked it a lot, and Sam Rockwell had a great performance in the film. IT was pretty sweet, under all the layers of humor there.

bf Wed, May 28, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

i'm a chick and i love anything Palahniuk.

Dana Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

Loved the book, the movie looks promising.

amelia Wed, May 28, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

I'm a fan of Rockwell, so I'm interested, but I must wait for the reviews before saying I'll see it.

sari Wed, May 28, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

The book is weird but Sam Rockwell is a hot ass man and quite underappreciated as an actor (Matchstick Men anyone or Confessions of a Dangerous Mind)...so I'll buy a ticket to this movie.

Vlada Wed, May 28, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

I saw this at an advanced screening last year and it was lot funnier than I was expecting it to be. And yes, I'm a girl.

Jules Wed, May 28, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

Well, it looks funny to me. This from a female PopWatcher that can't believe that anyone found "Wild Hogs" funny.

annie Wed, May 28, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

i'm a huge fan of the book and of sam rockwell. not sure the adaptation is going to do the book justice though.

Scott P Wed, May 28, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

Loved the book too, we can only hope the movie comes close to matching it in quality.

Gina Wed, May 28, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

Not really sure how gender factors in to enjoying/appreciating a well told story and what looks like a great film adaptation. In any case, I'm certainly looking forward to it.

dana Wed, May 28, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

Loved the book, I imagine the movie will be great, too.

Puppetgirl Wed, May 28, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST

I'm a girl and this was my favorite Palahniuk book of all time, so I'm excited/worried about this adaptation. Sam Rockwell is a golden acting god but there's no way this will be comparable to Fincher's Fight Club.

Nix Wed, May 28, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

I knew you'd like this movie, Susman.

NineDaves Wed, May 28, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

i don't know if it's a male/female thing, but this film looks much better than i anticipated. when i read the book, i couldn't imagine how they would turn it into a film. gregg seems to have pulled together the right amount of humor in palahniuk's story, without making it, say an outright comedy (a la "running with scissors, the movie"). looks like i've got something for my september must list!
