Comedy stars we'd like to see more of

Catherineohara_l It's great to hear that we may get to see Catherine O'Hara (pictured) every week, thanks to Rob Thomas, who may cast her in an ABC dramedy pilot, Good Behavior. The news got me thinking — there are so many great performers in the SCTV/Christopher Guest axis, and yet a number of them we hardly ever see. I miss Joe Flaherty. What about you, PW-ers? Which MIA comedy performers would you like to see on a regular basis, and what TV roles would you cast them in?

I love the stand up of Daniel Tosh, he has comedic timing in his being.

Stephanie T. Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

Dave Thomas. I bumped into him once while I was having dinner out. He's just a nice guy, and he helped my Mom out get out of a booth.

Other, Dave Foley, Bruce McCullough, Scott Thompson, Patton Oswald, Gail Mattius,Andrea Martin,Ellen Clegghorn, and Rick Moranis.

ilana Thu, May 8, 2008 at 01:39 AM EST

Linda Cardellini. She was awesome on Freaks and Geeks and in Grandma's Boy. Why is she just on ER? I want to see her in some bigger roles, i think people would really like her!

David Cross or Zach Galifianakis

othell Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

I loved watching Jerry Stiller on both SEINFELD and KING OF QUEENS, and would love to see him in something new, maybe including his long-time partner and wife Anne Meara.

JMC Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

KLF: I actually Netflixed it because it had the most beautiful man on the planet in it, so imagine my surprise when Tudyk popped up. Lots of BBC regulars in that on.

David D Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

I'm honestly surprised that Rick Moranis didn't become a bigger star, and as much of an in-demand actor as Martin Short. But with only a few exceptions ("Streets of Fire," for one), he was always cast in the movies as nerdy wimps. And as anyone who cherished his work on SCTV could tell you, the guy could do ANYTHING. Now we're gonna get a Bob & Doug McKenzie animated series, and I'd rather see Rick stretch the way he used to.

Matt Wed, May 7, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

I miss Valerie Cherish. Room & Bored was okay (she had a hi-LAR-ious tag once about sex stuff in a bag,) but I'm It! was so great. Such a great workplace comedy. And everybody loved that chimp!

Snsetblaze Wed, May 7, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

I agree with everyone everybody listed, especially Jennifer Cooledge. (Did you see her on Nip/Tuck?). I add Seth Green, Nicholas Brendon, Oliver Platt and Bradley Cooper to the list.

KLF Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

Totally agree about Catherine O'Hara. She is simply great. To JMC: I hope you have seen Death at a Funeral because Alan Tudyk steals the movie! The guy is just funny and I will watch him read the phone book for 2 hours!

Jill Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

Anyone from the cast of Arrested Development. They are all completely underutilized.

Jelana Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Eugene Levy is funny in everything he does, and he has single-handedly saved a few films from disaster.

Mik Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

Bonnie Hunt....Catherine O’Hara...Kathy Griffin.... Martin Short.....Bill Murray....Steve Martin....Carol Burnett....Molly Shannon....LILY TOMLIN....Patricia Richardson....Doris Roberts....Patricia Heaton...Leah Remini....Debbie Reynolds...Jean Smart...Annie Potts the list can go on

Kbop Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

Tom Cavanagh...where are you?

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

Rachel Dratch.

Just bring back SCTV---so much better than SNL ever was!

FM Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Just finished watching my newly purchassed Freaks and Geeks set (now onto all the commentaries!) and have got to second Joe Flaherty. Growing up as a good Canuck I always saw him as just another guy on that SCTV show that was on every once in a while, but his work in F&G really impressed me. Id love to see him in another Comedic/ light-drama role.

Kate Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

I'd say the entire cast of Arrested Development... Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, Tony Hale, Jessica Walter, Micheal Cera & Alia Swakat. I miss that show..

Hoju Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

Jordan Peele and Nicole Parker (MADtv)
deserve much much bigger and better stages.

paige Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

catherine o'hara is genius- why did Tim Burton stop using her?

JMC Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

I wish Alan Tudyk did more. I've loved him since A Knight's Tale and even almost watched Firefly on Fox cause I saw he was on it. Every now and then he pops up in British TV and offbeat side movies, but I can't get enough.

Ames Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:15 AM EST

I always thought Barbara Streisand was such a gifted comedian, and it was such a shame she made so many serious movies and focused so much on her singing. "What's up doc?" is one of the funniest movies ever, but now I'm thinking about Madeline Kahn and how much I miss her.

Sven Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:59 AM EST

Like Jenny, BONNIE HUNT. Why she did not make Vanity Fair's list of beautiful funny women, I will not ever understand. She is wonderful on so many levels.

Chris G Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:43 AM EST

Rachel Harris, yeah i love her. And where's Parker Posey been lately??

snarky Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

Who was the blonde in that weird sitcom - "Notes from the underbelly?" I would totally watch a show with just her in it. I also think that Jaime Pressley is underutilized in "Earl"

Ceballos Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

Jennifer Coolidge is a great choice, since she's consistently hilarious in everything she does.

Another person from the Christopher Guest canon I'd love to see more of is John Michael Higgins. He was absolutely hilarious in "Best in Show" and I LOVED him as lawyer Wayne Jarvis on "Arrested Development" (that guy was a pro), and he stole every scene he was in in "The Break Up" (Tone Rangers!)

Now, the only place I'm consistently seeing him is in some funny DirectTV ads. Somebody give this guy his own show!

orville Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

I miss Norm MacDonald so much. And I'll second the Bonnie Hunt wish.

Jenny Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

Bonnie Hunt. She's brilliant and I'd watch her in anything. I sat through "I Want Someone To Eat Cheese With" just for the 5 minutes of BH screen time. If that's not fangirl dedication, I don't know what is.

NineDaves Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:17 AM EST

last night i saw young frankenstein on broadway and remembered how much i love megan mullally. i would really enjoy seeing her in a show, perhaps the new one with molly shannon? andrea martin was also in the show, and i'm curious why she isn't a bigger star. i'd love to see andrea and jackie hoffman team up to do some sort of half hour comedy pilot, like a real housewives spoof. also, remember cheri oteri?

fredric Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:16 AM EST

Here's a thought... why can't execs greenlight a Christopher Guest series?

Ron Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:50 AM EST

Jennifer Coolidge never fails to get a laugh out of me. American Pie, Legally Blonde, Friends, etc.

I shamefully went to see Penelope a while ago (I have a mini crush on James McAvoy), and Catherine O'Hara was the only decent thing about it. She should definitely do more. The film was terrible by the way (and confusing - why did some of the people living in London have English accents and all the main characters, that were meant to have grown up there, have American accents? Weird).

Lauren Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:54 AM EST

Catherine O'Hara should have received and Oscar nomination for every role she's ever been in. The woman is incredible.

I'd be only slightly hesitant to cast her in a sitcom simply due to the dreary television debut of her oft-costar, Parker Posey earlier this year. It's frustrating to see great actors in mediocre projects.

Elizabeth Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:48 AM EST

Will Friedle.
