‘Bones’: Oh, Happy Day

Bones_l Okay, let's just get this out of the way: I cried during this episode. I know, I know. We're all aware this show is all about the chemistry between Booth and Brennan (pictured; just see Mandi's post on the subject for a refresher) but it was all dialed up to 11 last night during the trial of Brennan's father, Max Keenan (Ryan O'Neal), for killing the FBI director who was stalking his children. The case, with it's own ups and downs that kept you unsure of whether Max would go free, ended up spotlighting  Booth and Brennan's special connection in unique and touching ways. By the time her father was released, it was fitting that Booth was hugging her other man outside while waiting to hear the verdict.

What made the show so much better was that they weren't limited to the really heavy emotions but were able to be playful and light with one another and show how in sync they are, like Booth telling Special Prosecutor Caroline Julian that he didn't mind Brennan laughing herself to tears at his hypothesis for the oddly positioned skeleton in the beginning of the episode, or their teasing of Sweets when he asked to continue meeting with them. (The two of them singing "He really liiiikes us" in unison was genius.)

Brennan had such a difficult time reconciling her emotional desire to see her father go free with her rational belief that what she does is put bad guys away, no matter who they are. "This is very confusing for me," she said. No kidding. Booth had to explain that sometimes, you have to put the brain away and pop the heart into overdrive. Of course he then proceeded to vroom, vroom the rest of his analogy, prompting an even more confused look from Brennan, followed by a loving stare when she said, "Sometimes, I think you're very nice." Those long looks they share are a thing of beauty. From the simple (his look when she said he's the person she talks to "about things like this" while formulating her reasonable doubt scenario) to the intense (again, his look while explaining under oath that Brennan is not capable of murder), they convey so much about their feelings for one another without becoming too heavy-handed. And that hug at the end... No hesitation on her part. And he knew to go looking for her when the verdict was coming in.

I can't always decide if Angela's "insight" is really Brennan as she is or a more emotional, Angela-like version, but the artist's decision not to testify and help send her best friend's father to the electric chair (it's actually lethal injection) made complete sense to me. But I would think there would be some long-term ramification for Angela, and she wouldn't be standing outside of the courthouse with everyone else at the conclusion of the trial. Aw, I've watched way too many Law & Orders. But it was a great callback to have Dr. Clark Edison (Eugene Byrd), who was kicked to the curb when Zack returned from Iraq, be the defense forensic anthropologist. And having him catch Zack, his nemesis, in a mistake was even better. And it goes without saying that it was a treat to see Ernie Hudson as the defense attorney.

O'Neal more than lived up to my hopes for him on the show with his portrayal of a man who did what he thought was right, with no room for remorse. That included his staying to stand trial so as not to further abandon his daughter. When he told her that he'd do it all again just to spend that time with each other, my heart broke for Brennan.

Were the rest of the crew wrong to testify? Do you think that Sweets was way off base to think that Brennan's hyperrationalization meant she could be capable of such a murder? Who do you think is getting shot next week? And does anyone know the title of the song that played at the end of the episode this week?

Lance Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

Abby - as a courtesy, since you asked and I did not see an answer, that ending song was "Fountain" by Sara Lov. The album is not scheduled for release until late this year but you can search for her and buy online (I think)

Lance Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:04 PM EST

Last for tonight (No promises about tomorrow). I always wonder how Brennan cld write a novel or wld even want to with her lack of social skills. Max is still a wanted man for the bank heists. He's cleared on the murder charge but wld be held - not released - for the string of break-ins (for which he only remains alive) to stand trial. Angela and Booth are the Ying & Yang of the same personality & are merely foils to flesh out Temperance as Wonder Woman. All of a sudden in the past 3 epis (out of order as they are) Brennan has become sensitive and emotive. Huh? Did she get hit on the head or something to cause this? She expresses much more deep feelings about Booth and laughs too easily. She would otherwise never have been so "chummy" with Sweets's girlfriend, for example, or made the social overture on the phone, "I look forward to meeting her . . ." Booth has been beaten and tortured; Brennan & Hodgins buried alive; Camile has been poisoned: That leaves Angela/Zach to get shot?

Lance Thu, May 8, 2008 at 10:38 PM EST

I've got to say this: Booth is the ideal man for who women are trying to be, these days. He is the Ken doll with the macho-on-demand characteristics of G.I. Joe. He's got the heart and soul and is a non-threatening, teddy bear, pretty boy but he is also secure - taking a secondary role, making less money, not getting the credit - his compass always points to what's honorable and true. He's the best qualities of what men strive to be without women having to share his struggles and strife. He's a hormone and vitamin supplement or the perfect, obedient pet. A fully posable get-no-action figure.

Lance Thu, May 8, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

The thing I enjoy most about the Brennan/Booth relationship is that Booth knows exactly what he wants with Brennan and always gets hurt when she accepts their interaction purely pragmatically. I understand the need for her strong independence. The prince rescuing the princess has been turned on its ear in this show so that the prince helps the princes discover herself while he hopes that she'll somehow get "girlie" toward him. The subtle fact he can touch her anytime while no other person but Angela has such access is awesome. When she occasionally becomes vulnerable I am a total sucker and wonder how Booth can be so . . . patient(?) except he puts her interest ahead of his own. Fantastic. Unconditional acceptance on Booth's part. Anyone agree?

jane Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:13 PM EST

The epi annoyed from the start with Brennan's fake laugh (woeful acting ED) Angela's dramaramma's please shut up, she is your friend we get! If she has a problem about testifying about a murderer, change jobs. The verdict, seems that crime pays. The lame Brennan could of did it, prove it make her re-enact the entire event, bet she can't lift the body from her place to the hotel roof! Just stupid!

Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:00 PM EST

Lance, exactly, why didn't Booth, get any praise, he was the one that made it happen. I have noticed that the writers are always bigging up Brennan, she can do this, she can do that...YADDA YADDA YAWN...I wannna see the writers give Booth some kudos for being a great man, father, FBI Agent, friend, partner, son etc., I would like to see more of the spotlight on Booth, stories revolving around him.

LisaMama Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

Booth helped Bones realize that she needed to stop being a scientist and just be a daughter. Any daughter would do what she did (i.e. throw herself under the bus) for her father. Will there be professional ramifications for Bones? We'll see. But Booth and Bones are stronger than ever. He helped save her father. Period. Their bond won't be broken. I don't think Booth thinks less of Bones for what she did -- I think he loves her more for showing her heart on her sleeve.

Lance Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

OK -Folks. The possibility that such a decision would come down in a court of law was not based on Brennan's culpability but on the issue of no direct evidence to specifically tie her father to the crime.

But no one is commenting on the sad look on Booth's face on the courthouse steps as he DISTANCED himself after Max hugged Brennan. In the final fade Booth is walking AWAY. I think this verdict and how Brennan could apply herself toward that end is going to introduce serious conflicts between the partners as well as from external onlookers.

And, when it was declared that "you are looking at one fine woman," in regard to Brennan - was anybody else thinking, "What about the fine man that made that all possible for her?" Booth could seriously jeopardize his career as an FBI Agent because of his allegiance (and hardly veiled love) for Brennan. He will risk everything for her.

Tessa Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:47 AM EST

I came here a little ticked with the verdict but.....THANK YOU JAMIE! :D...you have put everything into focus...David Boreanaz...lets all sit back and enjoy the hot, talented package that is David B......goes off to have a cold shower!

Tessa Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:46 AM EST

Angela Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:31 AM EST

I've watched this episode many times #1 cause I love it and #2 cause I didn't get the hug at the end (but I do now), and while it still tears me up, it's kind of a buzz kill to see David's right arm peeking out from behind the pillar over Emily's left shoulder while he's waiting for his entrance cue.

Jenks Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

Regarding Brennan's lack of cultural knowledge, yet she writes book -- anyone ever read any of Kathy Reichs' books? Not a lot of pop culture going on there. I can totally hear Kathy Reichs (author) or her main character (forget the name) saying, "I don't know what that means" in response to some pop culture reference. They are all about the science.

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

Jaime needs a cold shower! ||

And maybe just in some boxers? I'll bet he wears cute ones with cartoon characters on them. After all, he wears such outrageous socks. I wouldn't mind looking at Scooby Doo if it was covering David's fine a**.

Jamie Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

Through the entire episode...

Jamie Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

Okay, seriously...you guys are getting WAY too into this. Yes, there were issues with the show, but it's a TV show. (Granted, the BEST on TV, but I digress...)
Just chill out and enjoy David B. *Sigh* I could watch him brushing his teeth and it would be entertaining. Of course...I would like for him to be shirtless...

Sweet Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

Since we're getting all technical here, Sweets would never have a Masters and a Ph.D. from 2 different schools as mentioned when he was on the stand, particularly in Clinical Psy and particularly given his age. Tranferring a terminal masters would substantially increase his time to degree, not counting his internship time.

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

Yes Brennan's lack of pop culture and being able to write modern day books, has annoyed me from day one, as has Emily Deschanels "limited" acting range, she should give David half her pay check just for making her acting bearable, particulary through season 1, where I have seen a door have more charisma and energy, she was truly woeful.

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

Booth is David Boreanaz (hottie) and Brennan/Bones is Emily Deschanel

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:52 AM EST

This episode was just a lame excuse to let Max away with murder. Are we seriously made to believe that Brennan could kill an overweight man, drag him out of her apartment, into her car, carry him us all the way to the top of the hotel and tie him up,ALL BY HERSELF, please, and the jury bought that she might have done it, it is too stupid for words! Pathetic

AJ Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:16 AM EST

Ok, which one is which? I thought Booth was the female lead? But in your article, you swap "he" and "she" with "Booth" and "Brennan" so frequently, that I truly can't tell. Watch your pronouns please.

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:03 PM EST

Sorry but as good as the acting was, the holes in the legal/courtroom story overwhelmed everything else. Brennan's staff would not have been the expert witnesses in her father's trial, so Angela would not have been in any position to make her grand gesture. Brennan's partner would not have been the one to search her apartment for the murder weapon. Yes I watch too much CSI, L&O, etc.

Does it bother anyone else that someone (Brennan) so completely out of touch with the world outside of the Jeffersonian (no sports, no American idol, etc) could write novels popular enough to earn millions and get movie deals?

BJohnson Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:52 PM EST

Well first I remember this was Bones not Law & Order. Reasonable doubt that a more able bodied woman with a wealth of knowledge of death and bodies could be a suspect over an aging overweight man. Okay that's done.
I did NOT cry but I felt like I should not be in the room when Brennan said Booth was a nice person. The love was there and when Booth muttered about her having a lot of heart on the stand. Wow.
Funny parts: the prosecution meeting; ugly up, the plain women on the jury hate you & eat something. Sweets saying was it megadangerous?? He said mega and totally on the stand. Angela taking the first (that's a friend you want watching your back). Great episode. Sad only a couple of eps left. Then I just found out The Close won't come on until July!! Oh the horror. See you next week.

Suzanne Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:13 PM EST

Loved it, particularly "He likes us" and "Sometimes, I think you're very nice," -- until the chorus to the last song kicked in as they were all standing on the courthouse steps. I'm sorry, but "Don't you wish you could throw your pennies back at them" sounded an awful lot like "Don't you wish you could throw your panties back at them" and kind of ruined the mood for me.

Becca Tue, May 6, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

the looks booth & brennan share convey so much. i actually feel what they are supposed to feel. but if something doesnt happen about the tension between them soon,im gonna go insane

rera Tue, May 6, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

Why do some TV Watches get the coveted place on the TV Watch page and some get buried in PopWatch? I like this show, and Abby West seems to like it enough to write about it every week. Why can't it be on the TV Watch page with the cool kids?

Sweet Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

Booth and Sweets were in on the whole reasonable doubt explanation. Best episode of the season! Yes, I cried too.

Gena M Tue, May 6, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

Okay I really liked this episode too but I like them solving cases better. I thought the whole Angela thing was very heroic and wonderful... overall a really great episode but there are enough courtroom drama, etc. shows out there.

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

Dr. Geeks....heeeeeeeeee, I loved that. Freaks and Geeks moment.

Katherine Tue, May 6, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

*sigh* "it's" means "it is"; "its" is the possessive of "it".

Dana Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

Great episode! Booth and Brennan have what all of us want to find in a partner. David B. and Emily D. are such great actors I am still shocked that they have yet to be recognized for their work on the show.

Jackie Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

LOVED last night's episode! It had me on the edge of my seat right to the end. Booth on the stand saying "That's a lot of heart" had me teary.

Remember, Brennan has an amazing ability to compartmentalize. She realized at the trial that it was time to stop being the crime-fighting anthropologist and be the daughter of a man on trial.

Plus, Max didn't go out and kill a random stranger because he's a bad guy or anything; he killed an evil man who was trying to do his family harm. And in spite of Brennan's work ethic, she realized that what her father did, he did out of love and an attempt to protect his children, which is the most natural instinct in the world. Did he really deserve a lethal injection for that?

Remember at the end of season 2, Brennan was ready to condemn a woman who killed her sick child, but at the end, Brennan goes to the prison and tells the woman that she understands why she did what she did, that she was acting out of love and mercy.

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

It was a great epi, David really stepped up his A game. The whole epi he was just surperb, Booth was funny, charming, caring, loyal, conflicted, worried, emotional...every emotion under the sun was out there, for everyone to see and feel. Good job David "that is alot of heart Bones" sniffle..beautifully acted!

Catherine Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

Of course all the rial did not make much sense...but lets not forget, it's a tv show!!! So I bought Angela grand gesture for friendship and Bones trying to no get her father in prison was entirely believable even considering her work ethic, it was her father!
Loved it! Cried a little! Laugh! I can't believe there are only 2 episodes left!

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

That whole "Brennan" could of been the murderer was totally lame, it that really the best they could come up with? Disappointing!

Anna Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

I love this show more and more! I actually didn't watch it much the first season, but got hooked last season (or is this the second season still and I'm confused with the writers' strike?). This show just makes me happy with how much everything clicks - the characters, the actors, the plot, the dialogue - everything! And then I love the extension of that joy when I get to read these recaps - please make a TV Watch or at least promise to keep these recaps going!

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

Angela was out of line, all she had to do was say she identified the victim, not really instrumental in sending Max to jail. And she was wrong making everyone feel guilty about doing their job and wanting to convict a murder. She really needed to tone down her bid for being a saint!. Max is a murderer and should of been convicted. It was wrong that he got away with murder! David's performance, the whole way through was breathtaking! kudos David B!

E Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

Bones didn't twist the facts. She introduced doubt into the prosecutions case - the idea being that she was in fact at all the same locations as her father at some point during the course of events. In order to convict someone, idealistically, it is supposed to be beyond reasonable doubt. Booth proved she was present (as much as it pained him to admit)and Sweets provided motif.

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:58 PM EST

DAVID BOREANAZ IS AN AMAZING ACTOR

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

The fact that Brennan twisted the facts to ensure that her murdering dad got off the hook, is just unfeasible. I hope that she will remember this in future cases and goes all out to make sure that the poor " murder" doesn"t have to face the consquences of their actions either...COP OUT ending! So crime pays in Bones especially if you are related to Brennan!

Jamie Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

This was one of the best epi's ever. Such emotion...and was I the only one actually surprised that Max got off? I really didn't expect him to walk out of that court room until Booth got back up on the stand, then I knew. And David B has got to be one of the BEST actors on the planet. I did tear up a little bit when he said, "that's a lot of heart Bones". Wow, such intensity! And I loved it when Brennan couldn't be there to hear the jury's vote, and Booth went outside. If that's not true love, then I don't know what is!

Lindsey Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

I cried alot! It was such a great episode, the best this season. The acting was incredible, the whole thing was great! LOVED IT!

Jane Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Confession time...David Boreanaz made me cry! He really did! As an actor he really knows how to make the viewers feel everything Booth is going through just by a look, a flicker across his face, he truly was exceptional in this episode.

Robert Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

I am always happy to see Loren Dean working, even if it was in the tiny little part he had this week. What happened to his career?

Laura Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

You've watched too many Law and Orders? Imagine the pain of being in law school lol. What bugged me more than Angela's contempt citation (since the trial proceeded without her and she can't purge the contempt by following the judge's orders, I would think there'd be a fine of some kind involved) was the fact that all the witnesses seemed to be in the court room all the time. That would never happen in a real trial.

Anyway, great episode. To answer your question, I think that Brennan might have been able to commit a murder of that type as she was before the show started. What Sweets has failed to realize, as Caroline pointed out to him, is that Brennan is a truly good woman. Booth has humanized her.

Al Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

When they were hugging on the courthouse steps at the end, I turned to my husband and said "And that's why I love this show!"

Coyote Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

I can't wait to watch this ep again tonight. I loved everything about it, including when the judge made Bones and Booth move further away from each other in the courtroom.

ecjb Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

Yay for Dr. Geeks!

Dave Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

Didn't cry, but loved when Booth said "That's a lot of heart, Bones" when he was up on the stand. Agree that this was one of the stronger episodes I've ever seen of the show, and it was nice to finally see how they all work in the courtroom as expert witnesses.

Rose Tyler Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

I cried too! I love the way their relationship has grown over the series. It makes sense and doesn't seem forced at all. I thought Angela did the right thing but I understand the rest of them choosing not too. I think they wanted to see Max put away for his crime but they didn't want to have to be the ones who did it.

Jen Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

I thought this episode was excellent. My favorite part is when Booth, on the stand, said to Bones-"that's a lot of heart." Love their chemistry. Abby, I think there's a typo in your first paragraph...Bones was hugging her other man, not Booth.

crystalsea Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

I really dreaded this episode--I figured it would be dreary and possibly boring. but by the end, with the alternate hypothesis, my jaw was hanging down. and the connection highlighted between Booth and Brennan even more than usual was just breathtaking. their relationship is amazing. I also liked how Sweets explained, in some way, how that worked. I'm glad he'll still be keeping them focused on their relationship and how it works. I love this show!

Vicky Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

Plenty of tears from me too. Great episode!

justice Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

This really was the best episode of this season, possibly the whole show.

Booth and Bones were just perfect. I also cried!

bonesforever Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

Loved this ep!! I was crying too.
