Who's excited to see 'Australia'?

Categories: Film, Movie Trailers, Oscars 2009

Australia_l As a guy with a Moulin Rouge poster on his office wall, it goes without saying that I plan on seeing Baz Luhrmann's directorial followup, Australia, when it hits theaters in November. And based on the new teaser trailer that just went up at Apple.com (click here to see it, or catch the embedded YouTube clip after the jump), I'm hopeful that the Nicole Kidman-Hugh Jackman vehicle will be worth the seven-year wait. It certainly has the kind of epic sweep (candy-colored skylines! gorgeous costumes! thundering hooves!) that Oscar voters love, and I'm digging all the details, right down to the art-deco-y font used on its stars' names. You in or out, or reserving judgment till you see more footage/read the reviews? (PopWatch photo editor Connie Yu informs me she is not on board. "It looks just like Far and Away," she says, "and Nicole Kidman's character can't even spit out the narrative. This is what we've been waiting for?") What say you, PopWatchers?

AlexB Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 05:22 AM EST

This is the one-I think and hope this will at least see several Oscar nominations. This film will be up there with the likes of The English Patient, Atonement and I'd love to see as Baz Luhrman's finest work.
The tralier is a classic and details stunning scenery and acting that both Nicole Kidman And Hugh Jackman threw themselves into to the point where Ms. Kidman passed out.
Just the trailer is a massive credit to a fantastic director and two of the World's leading stars.

Jose Paolo Wed, May 21, 2008 at 07:39 AM EST

Hello?? The trailer was stunning. Nicole's delivery and the script was so good and artistic. enough of the everyone was sleeping, grim, gory and garrishly serious narrations.

The childish-lack-of-word technique justified by the clips and Nicole's bemused expression makes the trailer so interesting.

lena Tue, May 20, 2008 at 11:26 PM EST

i think nicole kidman has just been chosing bad roles. She is a good actress, she has an oscar to prove it! I'm so excited to see this film though, i loved Moulin Rouge.

Jon Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

All the Nicole Kidman hate is totally ridiculous. She will be the best thing in the movie, besides Luhrmann's intense imagery, and will take home another Oscar to boot.

Oh and, for the record, Far and Away was great.

GeeMoney Tue, May 20, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

$10 says this a box office bomb in the US. The trailer looks INSANELY boring.

sheila Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

No Thanks. Kidman is an overrated actress. I don't think I could sit through 2 hours of a frozen expression.

lee Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:09 AM EST

You had me the moment Hugh Jackman ("a sort of magic man") appeared on screen. I'll be there opening day and many times thereafter.

cj Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:26 AM EST

This looks really pretentious as was Moulin Rouge and Nicole's accent, oh dear. I laughed a couple of times. " We can't let them win"
Too bad, the bombing of Darwin is an interesting story, ( don't quite understand the whole news reader voice over, no one knew this happened at the time)
And please, not another comment about how we don't "get" Baz.

Ar Tue, May 20, 2008 at 01:24 AM EST

I love Baz and will definitely see it! I still really want to like Nicole Kidman, but unfortunately she took all the attention in my trailer-watching because of her messed up face and pumped lips. Why oh why did she do that??

janeway Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:05 PM EST

I can't wait. Hugh Jackman in a sweeping romance I am so there. Looking forward to the steamy love scenes. Hoping it delivers.

Nix Mon, May 19, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

PopWatch recently did something about "what you will automatically see". This one had me at "Japan attacks...!"

Though not quite sure how the Epic Cattle(Sheep?) Drive fits in.

Hopefully with Luhrmann it will all tie into the Dreamtime somehow.

DB Mon, May 19, 2008 at 08:07 PM EST

i am sooo on-board.
i can't wait to see this movie,
mostly for the NK+HJ cast,
but the movie itself looks great.

cate Mon, May 19, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

Nicole Kidman's face looks very strange in that trailer, and bad acting with that kid. Also strange British accent. Looks like a stinker. No thanks.

Raven_Moon Mon, May 19, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

I'm undecided. It could be good. I'll wait to judge it for now until I learn more about it.

Emoney Mon, May 19, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

I will go. I still like Kidman, despite the tragic face changes. Loooove Hugh Jackman, and look forward to both of them using their own accents. Hollywood Aussies don't get to do that very often.

Benny Mon, May 19, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

Count me in. Love Baz, and hope to get my sweeping epic rush since Atonement didn't quite deliver.

Julia Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

I just want to know if Tara Morice is in it (and not just a fleeting vision in the opening credits).

Well, I've got a Strictly Ballroom poster (the color saturated Australian 1 sheet) in my guest bedroom so I'm a Baz fan. This looks good but I think it'll be a hard sell here. We're too egomanical to be interested in Australia's history. I hope I'm wrong tho'. I'll be there.

Jim Mon, May 19, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

If it had any other actress in it, I definately go see it. But, I can't the thought of sitting through a film with her in it, she's so over rated.

Celimene Mon, May 19, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

God, Baz gives stunning visuals. I'm not sold on the story/sweeping epic/botox'd Nicole thing, but I'll see anything Lurhmann makes. At the very least it'll be a feast for the eyes... and Hugh Jackman isn't bad either.

FJ Mon, May 19, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

This had me at "Australian Epic". Add in Hugh Jackman and I surrender.

AJ Mon, May 19, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

I have yet to encounter anything that Hugh Jackman does that I won't watch, and there has been some crap.
Add to Hugh my utter adoration of Baz & I can assure you that I will be counting the days.

H2 Mon, May 19, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

Count me in despite Ms Kidman's involvement. Still, even she should be better than usual as there shouldn't be the silly accent issues such as in Far and Away. However, if the reviews keep comparing Australia to F&A then I just might drop out, that was not a good film!

Laurie Mon, May 19, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

Hugh Jackman? Heck yeah, I'm in!

mjade27 Mon, May 19, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

Love Baz, Love Hugh, sometimes like Nicole - it looks like something to behold on the big screen. I'm a total sucker for sweeping period romances, so I'm in 100%.

vw Mon, May 19, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

i love kidman & jackman & i loved far & away & cold mountain too. Can't wait to see this.

jr Mon, May 19, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

oh hugh jackman is sooooooooooooooo beautiful!!! i'll be there!

Elizabeth Mon, May 19, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

Well, if its another "Far and Away", at least Nicole got an upgrade on the male lead this time around. How freakin dashing is Hugh Jackman — seriously?!

RayT Mon, May 19, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

This looks like "Cold Mountain" with kangaroos.

Amy Mon, May 19, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

I guess Ms Yu doesn't have a clue about how Baz Luhrmann works. You either get what he is doing or you don't. Kidman's character is not supposed to give the narrative away just the way the teaser is simply a series of images. Nothing about the plot just a series a gorgeous imagery. I mean, all we got was one dialogue each from Kidman and Jackman after the bit of the storytelling and that bit actually looks very different from the rest of the teaser. Almost like a tongue-tied introduction which is what it is. An introduction, not a narration.

Looking forward to it and seeing Kidman crack that whip! Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!

And as for Far and Away, it doesn't take much to note that Ms Yu isn't a smart carrot. Isn't it the horses?

Chris Richards Mon, May 19, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

I am not a Baz or Nicole fan, but i am usually willing to give anything a fair shake. The trailer was kind of bleh, though. The only possible saving grace looks to be Hugh, but he's been in some junk before, so i dunno.....I am highly skeptical.

Anne Marie Mon, May 19, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

I actually would be more excited about this movie if Baz wasn't directing. Don't quite get him.

Heather Mon, May 19, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

I love Baz Luhrmann and I really want to support him but I'm not sure I get this preview. It looks a little too oaterish (although I realize it takes place in Australia) for my tastes. And where has that song been used before? I feel like it's a popular trailer song.

fernie Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

I'm SO excited for this movie! Baz Luhrmann is my favourite director, & 7 years between movies is a long time to wait. I have to say, judging from the trailer Australia looks pretty awesome. I'm a total sucker for sweeping, historical epic romances, but sadly it's been a long, long time since there's been a good movie like that. If anyone can pull it off, it's Baz. I'll be there opening night -- this is definitely a 'big screen' movie, with all that gorgeous scenery.

(If I have one misgiving, it's that yes, Nicole Kidman sadly seems to have destroyed her face, first with botox, & now it looks like lip injections. Such a shame, since back in Moulin Rouge, she was so beautiful & talented. Luckily, Hugh Jackman looks INCREDIBLY dashing & swoonworthy in this, so that should more than make up for her.)

PS - EW, I look forward to your cover story & gorgeous photo shoot on Australia this fall! (Please?)

rustyalex Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

I can hardly wait to see this movie! I've been following it since Hugh Jackman became involved and the teaser only ramped up my anticipation. I'll be seeing it multiple times on the big screen. I like the look of it, Hugh, the action, Hugh, the drama, Hugh, the romance, Hugh, thundering horses, Hugh. And did I mention - Hugh Jackman.

Francisco Salgueiro Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

WTH?! Has the real Baz been kidnaped? This is normal Hollywood stuff.

Kate Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

I'm so in. Nicole, Hugh and Baz - I predict I am going to pee myself when the movie starts. I almost peed myself watching the trailer.

Susan Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

You couldn't pay me to see a movie that includes Nicole Kidman.

digott Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

Initially it was Hugh Jackman's involvement that drew me to this film. Now it's the whole package. Each element is so creatively inspired. I'll be there - more than once I dare say.

Chigurh Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

I shall flip a coin on this one.

Patty Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

This is a WWII era movie? Somehow I was hoping for a prisoner transport era Australian epic. Oh, and I will pile-on on the NK face tranformation - nasty.

Wes Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:03 PM EST

I'm in. Wow. This is why you can't rent every movie. Some things have to be seen on the big screen.

Maria Mon, May 19, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

Hugh Jackman bound to be shirtless AND using his Aussie accent in a movie?

Yeah, I'm SO in.

Amy Mon, May 19, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

I'm intrigued.

Jackie Mon, May 19, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

Um, totally onboard! If only because my love for Australia only surpasses my love for Hugh Jackman (looking like a legit-grizzly cowboy!!!! yahooooo!!)
Pumped.

Lene Mon, May 19, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

The landscape of Australia, a sweaty Hugh Jackman... I'm os there. I'll just ignore Nicole Kidman (unless she snaps out of the botox-induced haze she's been in for the past several years),

brit Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

it's sad to say, but i honestly can't even stand looking at nicole kidman anymore. she's done too much damage to her face and has lost too much weight. i think she's a wonderful actress, but i'm too distracted by the collagen that swells her upper lip. it's sad because she usued to be so beautiful.

Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

I've been waiting for this! I love Nicole Kidman and Moulin Rouge! is one of my all time favorite films so I'm definitely on board!!!!!!

Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

um- i hope its not another Cold Mountain but it looks awesome! when did Kidman start getting lip injections???

MrKitty Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

Nicole Kidman was not the awful part of Far and Away - Tom Cruise was - and Baz Luhrmann is a genius...I can hardly wait for this movie...

Sandy Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:18 AM EST

No thanks. I hated Far and Away. This is being compared to Gone With the Wind, one of the most overrated movies in history.

misty Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

I can't wait to see this film. I love Baz Luhrmann, he has been away too long!

It's in my top 5 films to see this year:

Australia
The Edge of Love
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Igor
How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

E Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Well the music of Henry V got me interested and I love the Red Curtain Trilogy, so I'm up for it.

Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

YES! YES! YES!

Nat X Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

Oh, snap, I LOVED Far and Away!

Beth Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

Slezak, you're the man of my dreams. Idol-worship and now Moulin Rouge on the office wall...Will you be my gay boyfriend? Personally I've been suffering a bit of Nicole Kidman backlash over the past few years, but I'm hoping that Baz brings out the fantastic in her again. I for one am dying to see how his visual sense has evolved over this long hiatus. He's always thrilled me before so I expect he'll do it again.

NineDaves Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

i'll be there with you, slezak, on opening night. i'm a sucker for anything baz luhrmann (i may even sometimes still listen to that sunscreen song of his). but i'm glad you mentioned font choice because that's an important factor in my movie experience! i hated "into the wild" on many levels, but the font choice in the title sequence was a huge pet peeve of mine. "australia" looks promising so far. luhrmann has excellent taste in typeset and lettering.

SJ Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

I've never been much of a fan of Nicole Kidman. Hugh Jackman looks good. At least they get to use their natural accents for once.

Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

Can't wait looks amazing, very epic.
