'The Strangers' (and your favorite scary trailers)

I realize that the trailer for Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman's home-invasion horror flick, The Strangers (below), has been out for a bit, but I just saw it this weekend in front of Smart People and... I totally jumped in my seat. I won't ruin your viewing experience by revealing the shot that made me whimper, but I will ask you to share the trailers that frightened you. What's been the scariest? That's a beautiful thing, if you think about it: The ability to get us that wound up in two minutes...

the most scary moment in te strangers is when she hides in the closet and then the doll face girl appears!!!!

Does anyone know the name of the song in the strangers trailer?
The creepy one when the record is playing..

Ron Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

As far as getting 'chills', the trailer for The Others and the little 'girl' in the communion dress! shivers

chris Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

the trailer for "the Strangers" freaked me out..usually I don't get that way, but the way it is set up seems so random..plus it showed right before "Funny Games" which also freaked me out because of how real it could be..

The trailer for 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' remake was scary.

Erin Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

"The Exorcist" when they re-released it in theaters a couple years ago. They kept showing a commercial on tv where they show her doing like the spider walk on the stairs. It's so creepy. I had to change the channel every time it came on and I still haven't seen the movie because of it.

Kay Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

"The Strangers" is exactly like a European movie entitled "Them". See "Them" first...thats a great horror movie.

Limevixen Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

The trailer for David Lynch's "Lost Highway" freaked me out for years. It wasn't jump out of your seat scary, it was truly weird and unsettling. Robert Blake comes up to Bill Pullman and says, "Yes, you have met me before. I'm in your house right now. Call me." And Pullman does and Blake is on the other end of the phone and the Blake standing in front of Pullman just laughs this evil laugh and you can tell the inside of his mouth is painted black. Man, I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Gotta agree with most of the previous posters--the TCM remake wins hands down. Too bad the movie was such a piece of crap. "The Strangers" looks awfully good.

funkymono Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

There was a fantastically creepy trailer for "Dark City" that combined some freakish imagery from the flick with some wonderfully frenetic orchestral music. I was working at a theater at the time and therefore saw a lot of movies, but I had to look away every time that trailer came on. I've since seen the movie and now count it among my favorites, and while it's more sci-fi than scary, that trailer was definitely creepy. Unfortunately, I can't find it anywhere now, not even on the DVD extras.

Jessica Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

I don't have anything to add on the favorite-scary-trailers side(2 minute spots typically don't cause goosebumps for me) but I do have to say that I love this trailer! I think what makes it work is how minimalist the music is-quite possiby the reason Halloween(1978) can still terrify me after 100+ viewings. Just a piano and then the record. Also, it's pretty creepy wondering what could be going on to make the record skip in that fashion. Sign me up for opening day:)

The original trailer for "Scanners."
Did not see that final shocker coming.

ncmacasl Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 07:35 AM EST

Phantasm from the late 70s. I think I remember a shower scene where the shower actually closes in and squishes the woman showering. Still freaks me out!!

Julian Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 01:34 AM EST

Definately the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. With the creepy voice and the flashbulb going off. And in my opinion the movie actually lived up to the trailer *shivers*

I hope this movie is as scary as the trailer.

Alan Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 11:23 PM EST

The first Friday the 13th. I was 8 or 9 when it came out, and in the trailer I saw on TV, a voice counts the number of victims up to 13. One of them is Kevin Bacon, who in a split second scene is lying on a cot face-up when a hand reaches up from under the cot and grabs his forehead (in the movie a screwdriver gets rammed through his throat from under the bed). I still have trouble sleeping on my back because of that one scene.

"texas chainsaw massacre" re-make was the scariest trailer i've ever seen

28 Days Later. AAAAH SCARY RED EYES!!!

Devin Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 10:30 PM EST

I remember getting a little freaked out by the "Red Eye" trailer. They set it up as like a romantic comedy almost than it gets all scary. Which is kinda funny, since the movie wasn't even all that scary.

Phil Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

Ok people, YES the trailer was awesome, and looked creepy, but here's the part where I mention that the movie has been sitting on the shelves for almost 2 years and has had as many release dates as CHINESE DEMOCRACY did in the late 90's! So any movie thats been sitting on the shelf THAT LONG, edited, or re-shot is bound to not be nearly as good as this trailer leads up to believe, sorry, but just saying...

DzNutz Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 05:30 PM EST

I've been telling everone I know about this trailer (shout out to B!) This un-spooled before "The Ruins" and clearly these 120 seconds far out frightened the 90 minutes that followed.

Jason Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

Dixie, I was home sick from school one morning, watching "The Price Is Right" and on comes a commercial for "Child's Play," new out on VHS. Chucky's running down a hall straight toward us with a knife in his hands, screaming "Here comes Chucky, in his new home video!" Does anyone else remember that? That scarred me for years. That kind of advertising is inappropriate for daytime TV.

There's a deformed little kid at the end of "The Hills Have Eyes" trailer that insured I wouldn't watch that movie with a 10-foot pole.

I don't really have any favorite scary trailers because I hate them all. For scaring me!

carr Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

While i think this is a good trailer, and now i'd go see this movie. i dont think it was jump out of your seat scary. The first masked figures entrance is really perfect. and i think it's a more of an "oh $h17. holy crap there it is" moment than a jump out of your seat one.
the others was good.

paula Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

The others, freaking scary!

Matthew Cruz Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

Easily the remake of the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" - I think EW even cited this one. It had a beautiful blend of mood and images. Also, the use of Peter Gabriel's "Signal to Noise" will forever haunt my dreams.

Ceballos Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

Dixie...so true about Scary Movie 3.

Andrea Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

I saw this trailer before the movie "The Ruins" and I was more scared from this 2 minutes then the whole movie! (Although in my defense, I only went to see "The Ruins" for Joe Anderson, so I wasn't that invested unless he was on screen).

After watching this, I had to sleep with the covers over my head just so I wouldn't think the white masked man would appear on my roomate's side of the room, even though it would be impossible to sneak into my res room.

Dixie Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

When I was 5 I saw the trailer for the first Child's Play. The next day I made my mom give all my talking toys (Teddy Ruxpin especially) to Goodwill.
The trailer for The Others gave me the creeps when it first came out, but now all I can think of is Michael Jackson in Scary Movie 3.

Nick Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

Thanks for raining on my parade, La La Love.

La La Love You Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

I watched this trailer a couple of times On Demand (there's just not enough Scott Speedman in the movies, HOT). I'm old and cynical though and I believe politicians before I believe movie trailers -- the biggest POS movie can be made to look awesome in 120 seconds.

Nick Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

THAT LOOKED AMAZING AHHHHHH

I want to see it. NOW.

DONT from grindhouse was perfect. why isn't that on the dvdssssss???

MrKitty Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

Okay....I'm not sleeping tonight....the boogie man in the door way is enough to keep me away.

Ceballos Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

"The Others" For no other reason than the very last shot with Nicole Kidman walking up and asking the ghost child what it did with her daughter and the ghost responding:

"I AM your daughter."

(shudder)

Patty Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

Way to scary for me to see - however - Scott Speedman is looking extremely hot and handsome.

Nick Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

Remember the trailer for _Twister_? That was terrifying... for two shots: first, the family trapped in the basement--with the lights flickering on and off. Second, for the final shot--the car barrelling straight atcha. Alas... the filmmakers played the first scene straight (no flickering--which, to me, was the whole POINT), and the second was made just for the trailer. What a ripoff.

Jennifer Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

OMG I saw this trailer for the first time Friday before "Prom Night" - this two minute clip was scarier than that entire terrible movie. Seriously, people in the theater SCREAMED at that first masked person.

Stephanie T. Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

DON'T from Grindhouse. That was awesome. lol.

Kilmo Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

"because you were home" - messed up and really creepy.

The image of basically the nuclear family: dad, mom and kid in those weird masks.

paige Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

there was a really great trailer for this exorcism-type flick with Winona Ryder called "Lost Souls", the trailer had a perfect blend of mystery, style, editing and mood. After the trailer was over i extremely yelled out "best trailer ever!" and couldnt wait to see it. It came out, and I was saddened to know it was "worst movie ever!"

Minutiae Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

The trailer for The Strangers freaked me out, too... and I don't usually get freaked out at trailers. Something about the shadowy figures invading your home and just appearing and disappearing at random just creeps me out.

Eric Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

The trailer for the remake of Dawn of the Dead scared the crap out of me. The baby in the carriage. It makes me cry a little just thinking about it.

Snarf Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

I remember when I was a kid catching a trailer for "An American Werewolf in London". At one point the camera pulls in on a close up of the male lead's face, supposedly sleeping. Suddenly he wakes opening his eyes and they're yellow, his teeth fangs, etc. Wound me up enough to sleep with the light on for a night or two.

Murph Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

The scariest trailer I ever saw was the one Slezak (?) posted here a few months ago w/ Jessica Simpson (in a Pvt Benjamin ripoff flick). Egad
