The PopWatch Confessional (Vol. 51: Hoping for a 'S' in the TV rating edition)

Apr 16, 2008, 06:00 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Channel Surfing, Inappropriate Crushes, PopWatch Confessional, Television, Who Else Remembers This?

Angel_l Okay, so while I've written some Confessional-style items recently, none of them have felt like they would mortify a normal person (e.g. someone actually capable of feeling shame over anything entertainment-related), which explains why I've been holding at Vol. 50 for a while now. However, when it took two rounds of a cocktail called the Sugar Dong* for me to confess the following to a few coworkers Monday night, I realized that I had my next installment.

Have you ever found yourself hoping to see an "S" in the TV rating that flashes at the start of an episode? (Be honest.)

I'm still DVR-ing those morning Angel repeats on TNT, which, up until the birth of Connor, are essentially first-run to me. Because I know that Connor is the product of Darla and Angel (Julie Benz and David Boreanaz, pictured) gettin' it on, I've been dying for eagerly awaiting the airing of that particular scene. I refused to look up when it would happen in any episode guide because I wanted to experience the storyline organically, enjoy the slow build... But cut to Wolfram & Hart resurrecting Darla right when my schedule became too busy for me to watch the Angel repeats on the same day that they aired (and cue my need for liquid courage): For roughly two weeks, I clicked on the freshly-recorded episodes every morning and fast-forwarded until I saw the TV rating. If there was an "S" among Angel's standard TV-14-DLV, I'd keep fast-forwarding until I saw whether it was the one where Angel and Darla make a baby. (After those episodes in which she teased Angel in his dreams, I grew seriously frustrated — to the point that when my friend Eva and I would IM each other to log our daily complaints with life, I was throwing in "Still no sex on Angel.") Finally, on April 11, it happened. And it was worth the wait.

Your turn. When did you hope for an "S"? (Just keep it as clean as I did.)

* The official drink of PopWatch?

Sorry, vadergirl. I should've vagued that up like I did in my last "Angel" rerun post.

kittyholmes Fri, Apr 18, 2008 at 02:22 AM EST

when that season on angel came out on dvd i was home sick, and took full advantage of that to have a really long marathon of angel. and when that particular scene started to happen, there was an honest to god earthquake in san francisco. (just a little one, but noticeable.) how weird is that?!

vadergirl Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Dang it, thanks for the spoiler...I too am catching Angel reruns on TNT, but for me all of them are new having never watched them in prime time. So, dang, now I know what is in the next episode. I guess I should be more careful when reading your blog.

Sina Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 07:51 AM EST

I keep waiting for the "S" on General Hospital hoping to see Lucky and Sam get it on in the hot tube again. Or to see Jason and Liz have some great make up, never let you go, sex.

I also can't wait to see the "S" on Eureka. I can't wait until Jack and Allison hook up. Sadly I don't think I will ever see a "S" on L&O. I've always wanted to see Det. Green do a sex scene.

Ashleigh Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 06:06 AM EST

I always wanted to see Jordan Catalano and Angela Chase from My So-Called Life get it on (although I was proud of her when she held off his advances despite the peer pressure)..then I felt guilty after I learned the actors' age difference. Nothing like the prospect of (simulated) statutory rape to sour a girl's salaciousness. :-P.

Kel Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

I also loved Pacey and Joey. =) If it was airing now, Northern Exposure is one I would look for it. Also am a Liason fan of GH. Too much V and not enough S on that one.

I'd have to go with New Amsterdam for new stuff though. Man that guy is hot!

Carrie Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

Well, I can only watch it On Demand and I don't think it's rated in any way but I live for the moments Capt. Jack makes out with another guy on Torchwood. John Barrowman is S on legs... hells yeah.

Clarissa Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

I always secretly long for an "S" on General Hospital, and I must say that the show has been way to serious and heartbreaking lately. I think I'm going through "S" withdraw . . .

lisam Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

I'd get disappointed when Rescue Me didn't have a sex scene in an episode. I've checked out Nip/Tuck sex scenes online. They're so much fun to watch!

Z Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Only reason I watch most cable drama/soaps. I even watched tell me you love me for it, but it was whiny and boring that it wasn't worth it.

EM in MS Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

I'm with Amy on Alias "S"ness and Anne on the Sugar Dong drink and website music. The other show I used to yearn for "s"ness was October Road.

E.P. Sato Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Agreed with ceballos. I go "Woo Hoo" whenever the "S" "N" or "SSC" symbols come on screen.

How come Telemundo never features the "S" yet constantly beams us images of semi-nekkid people getting it on?

Sugar Dong is the official drink? Well, then my "Chicken Porno Sandwich" should be the official sandwich. Use chicken breast seasoned with chopped onions, garlic and adobo. Grill with banana peppers and red peppers then add bacon until it's crispy. Sprinkle parmesan over everything and serve on toasted wheat bread. It's orgasmically good!

Scene-wise, I'd always wanted to see Kara and Apollo hook up on Battlestar Galactica. The kiss was alright, but bring on that "S"!

BTW, I would love to see an "S" at the beginning of the Office one day. a Michael Scott-Jan "S" episode could give us great scenes of that awkward freakiness we've come to love about their relationship.

BTW, no one does "S" like Ugly Betty. It's telenovela-tastic how often those characters end up in bed!

Amy Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

Ah, the 'S'. The thought of it reminds me of the good old days of Alias seasons 1 and 2... i knew Sydney and Vaughn had to 'get in on' at some point!

Nancy Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

Sugar dongs for everyone! That drink sounds fantastic!

Can't say that I look for the "S", but I'm pretty happy when one of the hotties on Lost (including Jin, and sometimes exclusively Jin) take their shirt off.

Anne Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

Okay, not only am I going to start ordering sugar dongs, but the song that plays when you open the page, pretty much made my day.

IndianaJenn Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

Thank you for 2 nice pics of David Boreanaz in Popwatch the last 2 days!

peppermintwisty Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Well, cable is always going to be dirtier for you freaks out there. The best, in my opinion, is Queer As Folk. They say in the very first episode that, "It's all about sex," so you can only guess. Hot man on man action! And occasionally woman on woman! There's something for everyone to love!

Cece Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

My current obsession is on General Hospital. I work during the day so I have to catch up on SoapNet. (I don't have a DVR, but my birthday's coming up if anyone wants to be nice.) Anyway, I watch the first 10 minutes to see if any of the people I care about are on (Jason and Elizabeth) and then I wait for their scenes together. I've been a littl PO'd lately because they just broke up and there hasn't been any good lovin' between them for a while. They need to cut those doggone phones off and get back to business.

Susan Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

I sure hope Charlie&Claire got it on in LOST before Charlie's untimely end at the end of the third season. Hopefully, the washed-up British rock star&the beautiful Aussie blonde enjoyed Sex on the Beach....(evokes "From Here to Eternity")

Ceballos Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 12:10 PM EST

Not so much for prime time tv shows, but when I was 12 or 13 and I'd watch HBO or Cinemax, I'd always hope a little too hard that the movie they were about to show had an N (nudity) SC (sexual content) or SSC(STRONG sexual content...yes!).

Who am I kidding? I still do that.

Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

(blushes in embarrassment) I have skipped work to watch Dawson's Creek reruns featuring Joey and Pacey. I know it isn't quite "S", but I maintain that the show wasn't about boring Dawson at all, but about Pacey's love for Joey--you can see it from the VERY beginning. Everything else is just a diversion. OH and I would love to see a little "S" for Jim-Pam on The Office.

Jayel Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

Heck yeah, I do this, and I refuse to be ashamed. I don't have DVR, but I do occasionally watch snippets of the a.m. Angel reruns, and having seen this episode arc before, I knew EXACTLY when I was going to have no choice but be late for work.

Lost is another show where an "S" at the outset warms my heart and so on. Last season, when I was so frustrated I threatened weekly to turn my back on the island forever, I secretly knew that I'd still check the opening for that 'S' every week even so.

The Buffy-Spike stuff was indeed super-hot, as were Buffy and Angel - anybody else have swoony memories of Angel's last regular appearance?

I also welcomed the 'S' for first season of The Riches, one, because I love Eddie Izzard in an unnatural way and two, because the sex scenes between him and Minnie Driver were always either really romantic or really hilarious or both. ("Oh Wayne!" is now a catchphrase in my really twisted household, I'm afraid.)

Crystal Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

The Buffy/Spike scene where they first do the damn thing is so very hot.

Nick Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

Julie Benz is TASTY in Dexter.
love angel. love dex. love her.

As for me, I love it when the holy grail of TV ratings appears on screen: TV-MA-DLSV. Nothing like suggestive dialogue, coarse language, sexual situations and violence for the mature audience. Kids, stay the Hell away! Shows like "nip/tuck", "Dexter" and "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" regularly feature this rating alphabet soup. Good times to be had by all!

Martha Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

Of course, given that all I've been watching lately is How I Met Your Mother, Masterpiece and Celtics basketball, I'm not likely to see an "S" on my DVR anytime soon... ;-)

Martha Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:34 AM EST

There's an "S" on your DVR when shows get steamy? You learn something new everyday...
I'd totally drink a sugar dong...without the champagne and sugar, thanks.

Darmini Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

Alli, you read my mind!! That's exactly what I hope for every time I see David Tenant!

Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

That was one great Angel episode...

Alli Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:06 AM EST

When I heard Rose was coming back for a few episodes on the new season of Doctor Who, only one thing flew through my head:

LET'S GET SOME "S" ACTION IN THE TARDIS!

Cat Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

Totally agree with Susan and Katie. I have that same OTH addiction and I've been waiting and clinging to any Nathan and Haley action for over 5 years. LOL They have the best chemistry, but they are the "True Love" couple and the writers continue to want to shove it down our throats that there relationship isn't just about sex. Around season 3 we got to see alot of post kinky action. Even one scene were they TORE UP a hotel room. LOL But we never got to see the good "pre" action. The writers will parade half naked newbie sluts no one cares about, but they never truly concentrate on the hot and heavy for their actual onscreen couples and that's such a loss.

Because let's face it these shows are for mostly females and contrary to belief we like "action" just as much as men and we want to see it with our hot couples. We don't want to see female characters we don't care about slut around our tvs. Most of us aren't lesbians and we are your CORE audience.

Susan Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

ITA with Katie. I was hoping there would be a S in the rating for this week's OTH. Nathan/Haley desperately need to have an S-rated love scene. I don't understand this show's continued need to cuddle them up. We need some NH nudity!

Bella Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

I am glad that I am not the only person who has done this.

Katie Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:23 AM EST

I have an embarrasing addiction to One Tree Hill and I have waiting for to see some Nathan and Haley "S" action for a while. This week they gave us a little, but it wasn't enough.

Winona Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:13 AM EST

Why on earth would anyone drink something called a "Sugar Dong" at a place that has Hoegaarden on draft?!?! Sheesh...

(And by the way, I do sometimes like seeing that "S"... )

Anne Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:04 AM EST

The drink sounds quite good. I suppose it would be inappropriate (on so many levels) to request that the runner go get me a sugar dong...

Alli Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:01 AM EST

I totally look for the "S" in the rating on my favorite TV shows too. I did that back when Buffy was still on, I do that now with the Angel repeats in the morning, and I get psyched when I notice it on the new episodes of Bones, though I know Booth and Brennen aren't going to get it on (at least for awhile, right?). That David Boreanaz guy was MADE for the "S" rating.

Melissa Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 07:34 AM EST

That Sugar Dong drink sounds pretty tasty to me.

Snarf Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 07:22 AM EST

Diiirty! Ok I confess - half of the appeal of things on Showtime, HBO etc, (Showcase or the Movie Network here in Canada) is the lack of restrictions that the networks have.
