'The Bachelor' recap: As usual, the superlatives were unnecessary

Robinmatt_l The road to the final four was supposed to be paved with "the most shocking confrontation in Bachelor history" and the "the most dramatic rose ceremony yet." Naturally, it wasn't. I'll admit that when I realized that either Amanda or Robin would get the boot along with Marshana, I found myself saying "Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God." (I may have been a little tipsy.) But that's because I expected Robin (pictured, with Matt) to get the rose, and I didn't want to see Amanda go. When Amanda's name was called instead, I thought for sure Robin would ask Matt to walk her outside so she could say, "What the hell?" But she didn’t. She gave him the evil eye and said, "Bon soir." What?! On the one hand, I respect her decision to not give a man who doesn't want her anymore of her time. But Matt all but told her that she was a lock for a rose, that's why he didn't need to have a one-on-one date with her and why he was asking her about Michigan, so it'd be nice to know what changed his mind. (Maybe he, too, thought it was weird the way that she just slipped into the spot where Shayne had been laying with him in the snow in Sun Valley? Or maybe it was her intensity?) I guess we'll just have to tune in to the tell all, won't we? Damn it.

As for the confrontation between Marshana and Chelsea — it was the loudest in Bachelor history. Maybe. Chelsea said Marshana acted like she didn't want to be there; Marshana said obviously, she did. Had she not played rugby for the man and taken an elbow to the face? Had she not let him toss her in the snow (after he chased her) and put skis on her for the first time? Had she not gotten into a swimming pool? Yes, you did, Marshana. But you're keeping score ("I have risen to every occasion, taken everything he's thrown at me. I've done really well..."), which doesn't sound like you're enjoying yourself. Just because you go on a show to meet a man, doesn't mean you have to dig him.

After the jump, Shayne's packin' and Chelsea needs to be mackin'.

As of now, I'm not sure which of the remaining four — Chelsea, Shayne, Amanda, and Noelle — Matt will choose. His one-on-one sleigh ride with Chelsea in Sun Valley wasn't the romantic outing he'd hoped for because she's anti-PDA (which we know he is decidedly not) and has a phobia of holding hands. But she made a brilliant move at dinner, after Matt told her that his parents would love her (ahhh!), and wrote her own "fantasy suite" card that essentially invited herself back to Matt's place. It took her a little too long to figure out that Matt saying, "I know that you can be romantic," was her cue to kiss him. More surprising, however, is that I'm actually going to type this sentence: Kudos to the producers for giving them privacy so that Chelsea could be herself.

On to Shayne, the queen of cuddling, who impressed Matt on the group date with her snowboarding skills and her ability to pack half her makeup bag into the pockets of her jacket. "I have to look good for you, babe," she said. (Cannot wait to see Matt meet her dad, Lorenzo Lamas, next week!) Meanwhile, Amanda wooed Matt with her bikini and a joke about her "redneck" parents cooking him possum. That teaser clip  that we saw of her hometown visit — you know, the one in which her mother was rubbing Matt's nipple — is also a joke, right? Amanda told her mother to pretend to hit on Matt... Right?

That leaves us with Noelle, who got her first real alone time with Matt on an outdoor ice rink. I understand what Matt means when he says he just really likes her. She seems warm and genuine, the kind of person with whom you could be comfortable sitting in silence because she'd be too nice to ever make you feel awkward. She and Matt both have scars on their faces (which I never noticed), and he admires that she hasn't allowed her car accident to make her afraid of living. That's something real that he's learned about someone. Shocking!

So, who do you think Matt is going to choose? What's your theory on Robin's demise? And did you catch Matt ask Noelle if she'd be willing to move to London or California? (And did you roll your eyes like I did? It's not that I don't like Los Angeles; It's that I thought Matt was above the reality-star-moves-to-Hollywood cliché.)

problem is that if it looks like SHayne is a lock to win...she probably doesn't. That is what is annoying about this show. I remember thinking Tina Fabulous was a lock for Andrew Firestone (my fave bachelor) and then she was cut dramatically and he picked this very average girl who I can't even remember but she later dumped him. We'll see what happens.
BTW, I'm getting a gay vibe from
Chelsea who doesn't like PDA...!

jones Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

I think Amanda "meeps" gets the final rose. They usually edit the show to throw you off and it is being edited to seem that Shayne will win.

astrochick18 Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

I have agree that I think Shayne is the final pick. I also have to agree that she seems to be the one that is the most "into" Matt. Noelle is too reserved. Amanda doesn't seem that interested. Chelsea doesn't like PDAs. I think Shayne is a lock for the win.

CaseyL Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

Sorry whoever you are, I stand by my OPINION. You are either a guy or Shane herself.

Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

shayne is by far the best girl left. casey, you're a fool if you think these other 3 are being "real". she's definitely not immature, she doesn't have a problem admitting she's high-maintenance, she's ABSOLUTELY not self-absorbed, she wants all the girls to have equal time, and she wants it to be right for her. i truly believe she's not just there for a competition. she's the best of what's left, and by far the most naturally beautiful one as well.

Happy Hour Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

I think Shayne is a lock for the win. She is always the first one he greets and kisses when he walks in the room and they have great chemistry. She is likely very spoiled but she has a fun personality- totally cracked me up with her makeup on the slopes but you know they all had that for the camera. Marshana is now up there as one of the most annoying reality tv stars ever...not only was she painful to look at with her huge forehead but she was clearly just there for the competition and screentime. She jumped all over Chelsea for revealing her secret- she doesn't give a crap about the guy! Robin seemed a bit weird to me but was honestly just playing the game. It is odd how the girls are so helpful to each other this season. Seems like so many of them are just there to get on TV with their singing and "songwriting" and whatever. I too can't wait to see Lorenzo Lamas as he always seems like such a tool to me. Shayne's my fave bachelorette though!

CaseyL Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 12:13 AM EST

What is the fascination with Shane?? She's spoiled, immature, self absorbed, talks like a baby and I have yet to see her sit up straight, almost like it's too much of an effort for her to do so. She is PRETTY that I'll give her, not gorgeous, not naturally beautiful.

If he picks her, if Matt TRULY wants love and marriage it will NEVER happen. I cannot picture her in London at all, unless Big, Bad Daddy scares Matt into taking her off his hands. PLEASE, can she even spell London??

I have a toss up on the remaining 3, I like Noelle, but am worried about her actress past. Amanda's creepy Mother may do her in and Chelsea well, I don't see a love connection. With any of them really.

As for Marshana, what was she trying to prove?? She was in to Matt like I am in to filling a cavity without Novacaine. The only person she is in to is herself. She was an embarressment to watch.

Robin turned out to be a evil little thing, controlling and childish all at the same time. Thank God she is gone.

unnamed Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 10:11 PM EST

Why he posted his personal ads on m y i n t e r r a c i a l m a t c h . c o m ????? It seems that they have emotional issues.

Patsy Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

We are SSOOOO glad you're gone anoying Robin - I've never seen a gal bust in on a couple's private moment than her! Shane will get the final rose - she's hilarious and not afraid to show her high maintenance self.

MsDaisy Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

Nitpicking here, but the way Matt clasps his hands during the rose ceremonies annoys me to no end. He looks like he's about to go onstage with the Von Trapp family singers.

Anna Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

I can't believe no one's mentioned Robin's crazy eyebrows. SO happy to see her leave.

Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

I couldn't believe he actually saw through Robin & Marshawna's BS. Way to go Matt!

Carli Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

I'm fairly certain Noelle lives in CA and that's why Matt said that.

from Robin's hometown Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

Robin graduated from high school in 2003

jones Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

Oh, and does anyone else have trouble believing Robin is 22? If so, she needs to avoid the sun ASAP b/c she has some serious lines forming around her eyes and across her forehead. Maybe from scowling so much.

Quinn Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

Last week I said that although I love Chelsea, I wasn't completely sure she was the best choice for Matt. I take that aaaaaall back. Take it from a someone with a sarcastic sense of humor...when you find that in someone else, it's a riot! I think they have a very fun relationship, which I could see being something that's important to Matt. Hiding behind the sarcasm can be an issue sometimes, but I think Chelsea's getting past it.

That being said, I'd like her and Amanda to make it to the finals. Although Shayne has really grown on me!

And bon soir, Robin. You were oh so European. What with your parent's fancy tea maker and the knowing all about Wimbel"T"on, you were THE obvious choice!! Or not so much.

csg Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

If Matt's thinking about moving to LA, that just confirms my suspicions that he's not who the producers are selling us on. For example, they say he's "Cambridge-educated" but he actually went to a universiy (Anglia Ruskin) that just happens to be in Cambridge, and is far less prestigious. They also say he "works with millionaires" but that could just make him a bank teller at a high-end bank.

I'm not judging his attractiveness, sense of humor, etc. here, but his career background may be far less impressive than we are being led to believe. Reality-star-moves-to-Hollywood future may be his best bet.

Lene Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

I'm still betting on Amanda (just love her real-ness), but with Shayne as the second. Although initially I thought Shayne was a dimwit, she's showing layers of being a real person - never would have guessed she was a good athlete. And the makeup in her jacket was genuinely hysterical, making me laugh with her, not at her.

p.s. Um, Marshana? Good people don't feel compelled to talk about how good they are. Self-absorbed twit.

trex Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

LIncee's blog and recaps are at www.ihategreenbeans.com and they are fun!

LaLa27 Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

I think the website you are thinking about is www.ihategreenbeans.com and her name is Lincee. Hope this helps!

macy Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

Does anyone know of a blog site that is done by a girl name Lindsay or Lindz that recaps episodes of the Bachelor? I read her recaps all last season, but can't remember her site to read this seasons. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

To "Go Noelle!" Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

If there weren't any of those "get out of my face" scenes taking place on these reality shows, then the producers wouldn't have anything to show, now would they?

Noelle is an actress Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

I, too, was surprised when Matt asked Noelle if she'd be willing to move to England OR California. Ummm... the answer to California is almost definitely YES. Look on IMDB - Miss Noelle (Noelle Drake) has acting experience, including a House episode, under her belt. I bet she'd just love to move to CA (just not for Matt).

cj Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

I'm really liking his final 4 too. I'm guessing it'll be Amanda and Shayne in the end - I wish he could have had more of a chance to get to know Noelle though - she seems great.
Good riddance to Robin - girl was way to self-centered (and crazy).

Cara Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

God! Matt is being so SMART, week after week--he's completely ruining my ability to make fun of him, and I really want to! Seriously, every freakin' week he picks exactly who he should, despite a million reasons why he wouldn't. He's...kind of awesome.
Mandi, I can't believe you didn't mention Marshana's hysterical "I'm awesome" rant. You know, the one that goes "I'm thoughtful, I'm kind, I'm fun to be around, I am a GOOD PERSON." Best part of the night.

Go Noelle! Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

I am so tired of reality tv show producers showing the scenes of african-american girls doing the "bitchy girl yelling, don't get all up in my face, don't disrespect me" demonstration. They do it on antm, real world, survivor, etc. I get that it is good from drama, and that it shows their "africanness," in the words of fatima, but I think it does a disservice to a group of people by promoting stereotypes. All black girls do not act like that, although that would not be readily apparent if you watched most major network reality tv.

jones Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

I was shocked and pleased to see both Robin & Marshana go last night. I actually like all 4 of the final ladies for once. I did not like Shayne in the beginning, but she really cracked me up last night bringing cosmetics in her ski jacket. Classic! It will be funny to see "the Lamas" grill Matt considering he (the Lamas) has been married like 4 or 5 times.

Slezak's Stalker Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 12:06 PM EST

Poor, crazy Robin. Like Chelsea said "you can't make someone fall in love with you." He looks the most comfortable with Shayne. Her and Amanda in the finale, but I'm betting he's going to pick Shayne. Especially if he's thinking about moving to California.

Gretchen Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

I think Robin was yes, too intense, and maybe Matt got tired of her butting in on all his dates like the girls did. Obviously she wasnt as secure in their "connection" as she made herself out to be. The best quote of the night was Marshana, as she was leaving say that she "left with her integrity". Ha. Good try.

Ms Daisy Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

Marshana was such a drama queen... honey, trust me, you aren't nearly as fabulous as you think you are. Matt probably guessed that Robin had stalker tendencies and decided it would be wise to let her go now while he has show security protecting him.

Alison Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

Ok, so as a younger (25) person on these boards, I have to admit. I had no clue who Lamas was. So, when I wikipedia'ed him I found out this little tidbit about Shayne:

His next marriage was to Michele Smith in 1983, resulting in two children: son A.J. Lamas, and daughter Shayne. Shayne can be seen on General Hospital in flashback scenes as a young Carly Corinthos; also appeared in the MTV reality show Twentyfourseven.

So she was already on a reality show. REALITY SHOW GROUPIE!!! I hope Matt doesn't pick her.

mg Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

...And I'm soooo looking forward to "The Lamas" next week!

Andi Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

I was in a dead panic that he was going to pick Robin over Amanda. Robin was waaaay too intense - along with Marshana. I really like Noelle - now that we have got to see her!

mg Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

Oh come on. Robin was a goner the minute she said she was "95% sure she was getting a rose". I just wasn't sure if Matt had seen through Marshana's fakeness. She was trying way too hard. Way to "be yourself", girl! I predict Shayne & Chelsea in the final 2. He's gonna love Durango - go CO!
