Soulja Boy, media critic?

Apr 21, 2008, 02:10 PM | by Ken Tucker

Who says the Southern hip-hop star's music is primarily good for ringtones? In this YouTube video, the “Yahhh!”-man deconstructs the recent ABC Democratic debate quite pithily. No matter who you’re rooting for (vote tomorrow, Pennsylvanians!), the video -- via a parody created and rapped by Jay Smooth -- makes some sound points.

I can't say I was too excited to watch this vid at first. Soulja Boy only reinforces what's wrong with most rap these days. However, as much as I despise him, that vid wasn't really that bad. It turned an irritating, unlistenable track to a fairly effective satirical one. I'm only wondering why he doesn't explore his more intelligent side in his music (as opposed to him rapping about 'Superman-ing/Super Soaking/Spider-Man-ing hoes'), because he's clearly not as moronic as he comes off with his other singles. I guess he'd prefers going the infantile route for a quick buck instead. Too bad...
