On the Scene: 'Idol' Top 8 results show

Categories: 'American Idol', On the Scene, Television

Carlysayesha_l The mood in the Idol studio going into elimination night on Thursday? Somber. From the CBS Television City pages to the cameramen, Debbie the stage manager to, yes, even Corey the warm-up comic, everyone just looked wiped out. This being their fourth Idol commitment in just as many days, it seemed like much of the crew had by this point OD'd on contestants, charity and gospel choirs. There certainly wasn't the same buzz in the air that I felt at the start of Tuesday's show, but then again, this is the day we all dread, and I'm not talking about Jason Castro's hair, either. (We'll get to his female hair-alike later.) Idol may give back, but it also taketh away, and tonight, one person's dream would be snatched from their clutches.

But as Carly (pictured, left, with Syesha) declared on Tuesday, the show must go on, and so it did. With 10 minutes to air, Corey turned on his internal power button and started the pluck-from-the-crowd-and-onto-the-stage shtick. Elderly man shaking his booty disturbingly well? Check. Teenager desperate to be cast on a reality show? Found. Soccer mom who can handle the Axl Rose snake dance? No problem. Debbie got some extra-special attention as well, thanks to her close encounter of the microphone kind with one Brad Pitt. "She was still signing autographs this morning," Corey cracked.

With the crowd settling down, it was time for Corey's instructions: Clap for the couch, boo for the chairs and, if you're chewing gum, please dispose of it in one of plastic blue cups being walked around by the trusty Idol pages. Talk about a thankless job. And for the front? "Be ready, it gets emotional up here." It doesn't take long for Corey to notice the four-foot-long dreads on one of the mosh pit girls. "Gee, I don't know who you're voting for," he said.

It's time for the TelePrompTer check, where everyone who brought a sign holds it up to see if it's in the way of Ryan's sightline. Tonight's selection is kind of lame, and not really worth going into, with the exception of one kid who donated his allowance to Idol Gives Back and is awarded with an iTunes card. With exactly four minutes and 20 seconds to go, Randy Jackson makes his entrance, and Corey is delighted. "You're always on time!" he yells.

Still no sign of Simon or Paula, but the Idols are marched out onto the stage, with David Cook leading the pack, followed by Kristy Lee Cook, showing a surprising amount of skin, Jason Castro, sporting those white capezio-looking shoes again and making the peace sign symbol, Brooke White waving and paler than usual, Syesha giggling and Carly hanging on to Michael Johns. As usual, the deafening screams accompany David Archuleta's name.

With the Idols all lined up, Simon and Paula make their way to the judges' table and Debbie asks the studio to quiet down and use our "inside voices." Cue the look of fear (and a yawn from JC) as Ryan makes his Idol intro. Since most of the audience members knew there would be no guest performers on tonight's show (Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown was pre-taped a few weeks back), everyone was prepared for a whole lot of video packages, though I don't think we expected one so soon. Still, it was nice to see Simon laugh at his own expense (with a little help from Jimmy Kimmel) and Debbie get her moment, thanks to the recurring mention of the night (and now of her life, I'm sure), Brad Pitt. While the video rolls, some 28 robed gospel singers descend on center-stage and we strap ourselves in for another "Shout to the Lord." My take on this repeat performance? Really unnecessary. I don't watch Idol for politics or religion. I don't tune in so I can be provoked to think. And I don't like to feel excluded. I want to be entertained.

Fortunately, outside of Kristy Lee Cook, whose walk into the audience was just plain robotic, the Idols hammed it up big time. David Cook put his worries behind him and belted the high notes with bravado, Carly looked confident and svelte, Syesha was smiley and radiant. Brooke, on the other hand, seemed very nervous, likely knowing she was up first in the elimination count-down.

After the group number, Randy, Simon and Paula took time to shake hands and offer their last good lucks. Brooke, predictably, is more of a hugger. As they exit the stage, the Idols are offered water and towels but not many take them. Meanwhile, I hone in on a baffling sign that reads "Danny Noriega: you're still my Idol." Huh?

It was time for yet another mention of Debbie's brush with Brad, and a montage of a dozen or so celebs acting silly to the tune of the Monkees' "I'm a Believer." Can anyone say filler? Oh, and boobs. Lots and lots of them.

Finally, it's time to dim the lights. Brooke heads out first with a forced smile and shaky hands, much like her banter, which includes one minor faux-pas. But we'll cut her a break for being presumptuous since she was, indeed, safe. Breathing a huge sigh of relief as she hit the couch, I'll bet she had another James Taylor tune playing in her head: "How Sweet It Is."

Up next: David Cook. Standing by Ryan, he fidgeted with the bottom of his leather jacket for most of the judges' recap, looking anything but "pompous." Vulnerable was more like it. But the tension was broken soon enough by laughs in the audience and, of course, America's votes. He was safe.

With clenched fists, David Archuleta takes a short walk to Seacrest central, slightly hunched over which makes him look even smaller. No surprises here, he's directed to the couch.

By break time, Brooke has relaxed and is leaning back and blowing kisses. David Cook, in better spirits, heads over to the front row to shake hands, while little Archie stays put. Corey finds a crowd member who drove from Salt Lake City to LA just to see David Archuleta and Brooke. But Brooke is in mid-conversation with music director Ricky Minor and misses the entire exchange.

The show picks up again with Jordin Sparks' and Chris Brown's duet and the judges break out for a few minutes. In their absence, Ryan takes Simon's seat and Debbie rests in Paula's. David Archuleta bops his head in time with the song, while Brooke, now with her legs up on the couch, and David Cook whisper in each other's ears.

The stools, meanwhile, are looking awfully lonely. Is Jason Castro headed their way? You wouldn't think so watching him gallop into position. JC didn't look to have a care in world. Did he know he was safe, or was he simply projecting positive thoughts? Either way, it was high-fives at the couch as Jason took his seat.

Enter Kristy Lee Cook, who's fumbling with her shirt and perhaps regretting the decision to go skimpy. From her facial expression, I imagine KLC thought her destiny was the stool, and judging by her reaction, she was as shocked as the rest of us. Holding on to her cheeks in disbelief, KLC literally collapsed when she made it to the couch, then leaned back with hands to her stomach struggling to process what had just happened.

While KLC's pulse returned to normal, we're treated to a video package by the three presidential candidates. The only one to get an audible reaction? John McCain for his mildly amusing dig at Simon. At the same time, the bottom three was starting to register as Michael Johns, Carly and Syesha made their way to the stage to be greeted by their fellow finalists with a big group hug. One minute to air and the bottom three hang on to each other in solidarity. Still, I can't help noticing that Michael Johns is sweating profusely.

Where's the love? In the studio, there were plenty of screams for Carly and Michael Johns, leading many of us to think Syesha was headed home. I, for one, was pretty much convinced of it, which is what made the evening's result perhaps the biggest shocker of the season thus far: Michael Johns had the least amount of votes.

But before I rant about this injustice, I have to complain about the build-up. Why bother mentioning that last year's lowest scorer was given a charity-inspired second chance if you're not planning to offer it again? What is the point of saying that, aside from pure cruelty? I found it insensitive, to be honest, and maybe even slightly offensive in how it defeated much of the good will built around the concept of Idol Gives Back. I can't imagine what they were thinking.

Now I wasn't expecting Michael Johns to win. Some would say he doesn't deserve to just because he's a native Australian and the show is called American Idol, after all. As history has shown, rockers don't tend to advance much further anyway (with the exception of Chris Daughtry and Bo Bice), but was it really MJ's time to go? Was "Dream On" such a disaster? I don't think so. Besides, whether or not the guy was the best singer, he certainly was easy on the eyes, and that I will miss terribly. Still, no one was more torn up about the loss than Carly Smithson, who bawled uncontrollably for the show's final minutes. It took a long embrace by David Cook, Kristy Lee's shoulder to lean on and a sympathetic tap on the back by Ryan and Debbie to console her, and she still had a hard time getting it together for the cameras.

Michael Johns, on the other hand, took the news much better. His final bow was all about having a good time and relishing the spotlight for one last trip to the riser. Foregoing the high notes towards the end of "Dream On," MJ had Randy clapping along, Paula on her feet and Simon looking genuinely disappointed in the night's outcome.

It was the prevailing sentiment long after the last note was sung. Aside from many a bro-hug from compatriots like David Cook and Jason Castro, MJ got a nice send-off from Ricky Minor, well wishes from Paula and Randy, and a genuine how-did-this-happen shrug from Simon.

So why did this happen, PopWatchers? Does Archuleta simply have the male contestant vote cornered? Is Carly stealing some of the rock thunder? Was Michael Johns' ouster justified? How did you react to the news?

God, he's so gorgeous, has the whole package (big voice, good looking, charismatic, good attitude), really a star quality. I believe that 2 be a famous star doesn't have 2 be the winner of AI. All the best 4 him n can/t wait 2 buy his album.

I wasn't a big Michael Johns fan, but I think he should of stayed one more week than he did. Also.......

i was so upset to hear MJ left. i screamed. i wanted him and DC to be the top 2. im not able to vote because of living overseas but i think it was a big mistake making him go home. DA should totally leave. he has a wonderful voice but every week his songs sound the same and its boring. atleast MJ had amazing performances. but im not gonna be suprised if he gets a record deal and i will most definitely being buying it

Susan R Thu, May 1, 2008 at 10:03 PM EST

I think America made a big mistake by sending MJ home. I think David A is too predictable and I have tired of his voice. He is like a "robot" of a person. Absolutely no personality. Please send him home.

whattheheck Thu, May 1, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

Am I the ONLY person in America who thinks its a travesty that Jason Castro made it into the top 10, let alone the top 4? He is the WORST single, one act person. I think that Sanjya was better than him. At least he varied his act each week.

Seisha on Idol SHOULD HAVE BEEN GONE A LONG LONG TIME AGO..SHE IS ALWAYS FLAT. THE GIRL CAN NOT READ MUSIC AS THE OTHERS. IT'S SO PAINFUL WHEN SHE SINGS.

Lady G Sun, Apr 27, 2008 at 01:13 AM EST

I have watched AI for several years now, and it seems and perhaps it is that the voting is rigged. Any time you would like to call and vote, and either get a constant busy signal, or some unknown ad coming on the phone line, then it is very presumptious, that the phone lines are rigged for the benefit of some singers. I do not feel that the public should be allowed to vote until until the last two singers remain, the judges should decide who should stay each week, if not what are they getting paid for? The talent for some shows is very terrible but there are some hard of hearing people out there who feel that these non-singers can actually sing, to which i strongly disagree. Maybe one of these seasons, if AI lasts I may decide to vote again. Since I found out that this show is rigged, why should I pick up the phone to vote for a real singer, when the vote is not going to count. AI needs to re-establish itself as being a truthful show, because right now,it is not.

starbright Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

If anyone should of gone home it was Shyesa, she is not all that good and to tell you they all sound the same when when black woman sing. She screams and yells they all do So did Fantasia she yelled in all her songs she sang. And Simon said she was sexy where ? Im far from being pregidest. But Come on when you sing you don't scream and yell like the other AI black woman sang.Shyesa needs to go she is not talented like I said they all sound alike.

Mary Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 05:53 PM EST

After reading some of the comments here I believe it when people say some Americans are cruel. They are not happy if they dont say something bad about someone. As far as Carly goes she is the best girl singer on the show. The only reason people dont like her is because she is not from America so people are putting the screws to her.And for the one who said she changed her name to sound like Clarkson ha ha ha ha what a joke.Did you dream that?

Jo Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

MJ stayed true to himself but the judges wanted to turn him into a bluesy/soul singer. MJ was let go, not voted off because he wouldn't listen to the almighty Simon. MJ is so much better than most of the ones still there.

Vader Mon, Apr 21, 2008 at 01:53 AM EST

Stop being whining crybabies. Just because someone YOU like gets voted off doesn't mean the show is rigged. Just because someone YOU like gets voted off doesn't mean America got it wrong, or that the tweeners are ruining things. You may feel strongly about who should stay and who should leave but if the outcome is different there's no need to come up with 101 conspiracy theories. Oh and the guy who came up with theory about the show being fixed such that the guys and girls take turns to leave, you're funny (and dumb too). I guess that means we already know which gender is going to win the Final! What a dumbass.

Luis Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 08:24 PM EST

I liked both Chris Daughtry and Michael Johns. But, between those two, I see Michael as having more versatility and will likely go even farther than Daughtry. So, yes, I was deeply annoyed that AI decided not to extend a stay of execution for Michael last week.

David Sattrell Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

Too much hypocrisy is going on in this show - they want to save the world, yet cant extend basic courtesty to the contestants (aka Seacrest pumelling MJ)
Also, little David is just a very sophisticated impersonator. He shows no orginality, nor does he take chances. Its one boring ballad after another. He is beginning to come across as weird.

Susie Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

Its was my first year watching American Idol. I stopped after last week. I can't believe how many people
have put up with a rigged show for so
many years. It didn't take me long to
figure out it isn't a competition at all. The producers and judges manipulate the outcome for day one. Ask yourself? How many weeks have you known it will be David Cook and
David Archuletta in the FINALS. Where is the fun and fairness in that?
idol sickens me

CAM Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

I don't understand why so many people say such horrible things about the contestants and the show in general. If you think it is so terrible, stop watching. Spreading rumors about the contestants is not only cruel, it is unnecessary. Face it, this is not a contest in which the best singer always wins. Look at past results. This is simply a show that offers a platform. Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks was dropped from his record label. 4th place finisher Chris Daughtry has done MUCH better than Taylor. So has 3rd Place finisher Elliot Yamin. Even Kelly Pickler has managed to be a success. So Michael Johns has nothing to worry about. If he's really as good as so many of the posters think he is, he'll do just fine. The same goes for the rest of them.

Ben Snyman Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 05:35 AM EST

Johns was robbed by the busy signal on his voting number and punished for their "mistake" by Ryan (who's since apologised). Anyway Michael's getting plenty of attention and Idol's posted the worst ratings in over 5 years THE VERY NEXT SHOW. We'll see who has the last laugh, but in any case it's time for voting to get an overhaul.

LadyJ Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 11:54 PM EST

In my opinion, Michael Johns has a very good voice and I have enjoyed his performances immensely. I have to say I was very shocked he had the least amount of votes when clearly there are at least three others that should have gone before him. Do I think he would have won? No. Do I think he has a good singing career ahead of him? Absolutely, and I can hardly wait for his CD!!! The good thing about AI is, it gives talented people the exposure they need to get their career off the ground with an already established fan base. Sure, there may be some kinks here and there but the experience they all get with AI is like no other. So here's to the future of AI and Michael Johns!!!

Is American Idol aware that the phone lines were tampered with? I tried to vote six separate times and each time the call was redirected to a sex hotline or to a taped message requesting a special code.

This was posted by someone. If this is true, then the voting was defective. If you had a similar experience, pass it along and share your experience.

REALLY? Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

Another thing going around is Kristy Lee Cook NEVER sold her horse. This was a story used as a sympathy ploy so people would like her and keep her on the show. She has tons of horses *she lives on a ranch* and out of all the horses she sells hers? She has money by the way. Her parents are NOT broke. Kristy's whole family lives quite well. Lets just say they're rich. Cat got out of the bag that kristy prepares herself to be in the bottom 3 but she knows she'll be okay. She's quite smug. She knows her brother in-law has a lot of friends and they vote a lot. She's totally syked about this website called vote for the worst. They vote for the worst contestants. She knows if a following follows what they say she'll stay on forever. She's so confident that she actually thinks she's going to win american idol. Just ask around. Visit the website. You'll see. Watch and see go to www.votefortheworst.com.

Kristy Kissing David Archuletah Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 07:28 PM EST

BIG thing going around is..........kristy lee cook and david archuletah have a THING going on. this has been talked about all over the place. weird because she's older than him but nothing would surprise me. all the david archuletah fans aren't happy about this ESPECIALLY the girls.

Wake Up People! Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

You guys are just figuring out Idol is rigged? I was no MJ fan, so goodbye. Now I wish Carly would get the boot, right along with KLC. This week a girl will get tossed. Watch the trend...boy, girl, boy, girl...Don't you think it's odd that America just happens to get the vote perfect every week? Yeah right. Lets vote a boy one week, a girl the next, than a boy, and so forth and so on. All the lines are busy constantly. I know the lines are going to be busy, but they always seem to be really busy. Makes you think, huh'? You watch and see.....I've been right so far, why be wrong now? If you dare post this on the Idol boards, guess what they'll do to you? They erase your message and delete you. They must be a little worried, since everyone is catching onto their trend. Besides, wasn't it said the boys were better than the girls this year? Why are these girls around? I'd bring Chikezie back and boot KLC off, MJ and boot Brooke off, and David H. and boot Syesha off.

SSS Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

Cool your jets people, MJ wasn't gonna win anyways. I'm glad he's gone. Also, I wish people would stop comparing this dude to Daughtry. MJ has NO WHERE NEAR the talent Daughtry has. People voted for MJ mostly because of his looks anyways. Come on, I read some comments on other boards, and alls they said were, "He was why I watched! He was my eye candy!"

betzblue Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

Don't blame the "show" it's the people that vote for their "favourites"..it's more of a popularity contest than a talent show these days. ( Remember Sanjaya?)I think Simon is the only accurate judge right now, Paula sidesteps ( because she wants to stay cool with everyone) And the DAWG man, he says the same jive over & over again. letting Ramiele whats her name murder Dusty Springfield & "In My Life" was appalling. I think they need to let the song choices be better! How about "Fooled around & fell in love" or "Easy to Be Hard", or "Marley Purt Drive", "Simon the Bullet freak", just to name a few...

It's really sad what happened to Michael Johns. But the same thing happened last year with Gina Glocksen. She was an excellent singer and it didn't matter. As disappointing as Mike's elimination was, nothing can compare to how disappointing season 6 was! 2 good singers were disposed of because 2 crappy ones were getting sympathy votes. Michael is a decent singer and dashing but certainly was not going to be the winner. Not even close. So for that reason alone it can't really be a shocker to me. I cna't even say that he's going to be a big star either. It's cliche to say that because it's untrue 99% of the time. Sometimes the winners don't make anything of themselves. Never say never but I hesitate to say that we will be hearing from Johns again.

Laurie Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

I tried to vote for Michael Johns last Tuesday and kept getting a busy signal but the week prior, no problem, I got through straight away.
From reading several AI blogs this pasat week, many people said the same thing. Who conspired to elimate Michael Johns and let people with lesser talent stay????

Plexi56 Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

I don't know. After the elimination show on Thursday I came away kind of dismayed and questioning the authenticity of the voting procedure that AI touts. I've always kind of felt the competition was rigged and manipulated by the producers.

The more and more I think about it though, IF indeed the voting is what truly regulates who stays and who goes then it might make a tad bit of sense that Michael Johns was ousted. He's the oldest of the contestants and I guess demographically wouldn't be in the pocket of the highest amount of voters (i.e. tweeners). Think about it, what contest that is 29 or so has won? Was Taylor Hicks that old? Maybe he was... Melinda Doolittle was close to that age and she bowed at the number 3 position. I don't know. The whole thing confuses me a bit and makes me kind of less into AI overall. I'm just rambling really.

Would really love to see Brooke get the boot though. I think she's just nauseating.

kulit Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 03:33 AM EST

Fox network watchout ! CBS & NBC need no more to spent money to kill AI. AI voting system has done that for sure. Please allow the judges to make an open scoring system and rank the Idol hopefuls according to their performance before the tele-voting ! This way,the AI fans would at least be "concientious" to vote fairly based on their "singing" talent & presence and avoid misperception that AI fans vote on race or nationality.
Hope FOX NETWORK realize you do not want to kill your golden goose and worse, make CBS & NBC very very happy !

Vader Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 01:32 AM EST

I like how the MJ fanclub is swarming the boards with their whining. Some of them are playing the age card, sniffing about the inability of tweens to appreciate the supreme singing ability of MJ. Quit adopting the "I'm 40, therefore I know better" attitude, its quite laughable. Others transfer their bitterness to other contestants, saying that the ones remaining are boring, and AI fans only vote for boring crap. Well I've got news for you whiners: A lot of people find MJ boring as well. He's a one-trick pony that applies the same one-dimensional vocal techniques to all his songs. He even has the exact same way of bobbing around on stage, lol. I've always been pretty neutral about MJ, I neither like nor hate him, but it's just funny how his whining fans are jumpiing up and down, making pathetic attempts to discredit other contestants/voters. Boohoo, your favourite got the boot, would you like some cookies?

Deb Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 10:51 PM EST

Michael was robbed! Everyones good this year yes, but Michael should not have left this soon. He should have been in the top 5! And we (the fans) did vote for 2 hours. So I have no confidence in Idol voting anymore, and so I am done voting for good.

barbara Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 08:49 PM EST

Come Laura, Grow up. At least all who read this can see that you know how to spell and to form a sentence. Why does it bother you so much about someone you do not know personally. David is a fine young man, that has high morals that this country lacks, and you are not so respectful yourself. How old are you? 30

barbara Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

I can not believe how every one is so insensitive with the fact some idols are still on the show. Like making fun of David A. or that the person didn't like this idol of that Idol and crying because voters didn't vote for M.j. Someone has to go and unfortunatley it was M.J. I feel bad too but that is the way the cookie crumbles. He will have a nice career. Just remember him when you by CDs. people need to give each of the idols credit for making it this far in a grueling contest that demands a lot from all of them. May the best idol win. How can you say that David A. walks like a duck Laura or what ever you name is. An no David is not too young to win this contest David is very humble and he is not fake. Remember Jordon Sparks. Singing is what David does and he deserves some respect to. JUDGE not lest ye be JUDGED.

SEAHAWKS Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

I HATED TO SEE MJ GO BECAUSE CARLY OR SYESHA DESERVED TO GO BUT HE WASN'T GOING TO WIN ANYWAY. CAN'T STAND DAVID C. NOR DAVID A. DAVID C. IS TOO ARROGANT ACTING AND DAVID A. IS FAKE! NOW JASON CASTRO THERE IS A UNIQUE, SWEET AND GOOD LOOKING GUY AND VERY VERY TALENTED. I WILL VOTE ALL THE WAY FOR JASON AND I AM NOT A TEENY BOBBER EITHER. IF JASON DOESN'T WIN THEN THE ONLY OTHER ONE I AM INTERESTED IN IS BROOKE WHITE. PLEASE NO ROCKER OR NO FAKENESS AMERICA.

slg63 Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

I do not believe that this was the "real" voting results. I am convinced that the results are arranged now by the shows producers, period. All of the prediction websites that I looked at had Syesha (deserving to go, of course) being voted off. I will likely continue to watch the show, but will never vote again as it is an exercise in futility.

Darlene Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

I was never a fan of MJ's, so I was glad to see him go. Don't know what all the rave is about Arche either. He's cute and can sing, but an American Idol, I think not. Now, Carly, there's a star. I can never understand how she doesn't always receive wonderful reviews. That girl can flat sang!! I LOVE AI!

Beth Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

Ryan had better publically apologize for his insensitive treatment of Michale Johns last week. I have lost what little respect I hever had for him as a result.

Yo: Idol Fan Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

Last year had better talent. You got to be kidding. I had a hard time remembering who the top 3 were. Forgettable.

CJ Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

I was a MJ fan from the beginning , just loved his voice and easy going manners,so was really surprised to see him go or to see him in the bottom 3 , but AI is a beginning not an end. I really feel Brooke and Jason needed to go next , and do not understand why Ryan did it the way he did. That upset me most of all. Not sure who I will vote for now, I divided my vote among 3 or 4 , now probably 2 to 3. DC and Carly and David A ,depending on how they perform. It will probably end up with DA, DC and Carly . Carly will not win so we will have a battle between 2 Davids. I never thought MJ would win but Jason , Brooke and Syesha should have gone 1st. Goes to show , we have to vote vote vote!!!

Idol Fan Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

This is my second year watching American Idol and to compare last year and this year, I have to say that last year had more talent, better talent and it was much better organized as far as song choice etc. Last year was a blast and I voted for Jordan Sparks all the way and she won. This year the talent is not as good and I can't see how the judges can say there has never been a better group of singers and that the talent is better then ever. There are a few good singers this year.I think the final two will be between the 2 David's.Hard to pick who will win. As far as Michael Johns being booted off this week...well he will do just fine on his own.Now that he has exposure behind him, he will be making albums real soon. There are those who are voted off way too soon and too many not voted off soon enough. Syesha, Brook, Kristi and Jason should be gone. Carly will go soon too. That leaves the 2 Davids to fight it out.Either one can win. David A. is not too young to win. Look at last year...

Laura Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

It's amazing that some people can't grasp the concept that Michael Johns just did not appeal to a lot of people. I was never impressed by his singing nor his song choices and I don't find him particularly attractive. Different strokes.

It's unbelievable how condescending some of Michal Johns fans are to think just because viewers vote for someone else, they must be tweens and only vote because their favorites are young and cute. That would not explain download sales. People just like the other contestants more and enjoy listening to them more.

GHALL! Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

AI is getting boring. They're voting off the only interesting singers and leaving us with same ol'/same ol'. MJ always made interesting choices. I didn't always like them but one need only go back to his Bohemian Rhapsody to see his star quality. Someone give him a contract or sign him up to play Michael Hutchence in a bio-movie.
It seems to be a foregone conclusion from everyone that David A. will win so my question is: What's the point? That's what makes it so boring. Let's just name him the winner get him a contract with Disney and put him in High School Musical.
If it weren't for David Cook and Brooke, I'd be tuning out completely. I can't believe some of the people that have been sent packing and some that are still around. I think the judges should choose which of the lowest three should go. Then at least it's less of a popularity contest and the judges actually have some say. Otherwise what's the point of having "judges?"
RYAN APOLOGIZE!!!!!

SHOCKING THE VIEWERS IS WHAT TV IS ALL ABOUT AND HIGH RATINGS. RELAX MJ WILL DO JUST FINE WITHOUT ANY MORE HELP FROM AI. SHAME THIS SHOW ISNT MORE LIKE THE WEAKEST LINK THE LADIES IN QUESTION WOULD OF BEEN GONE ON THE FIRST CHAIN. WITH EXPOSURE THE GOOD SINGERS WILL COME OUT OF THIS EVENT SMELLING LIKE A ROSE . THE PEOPLE ARE WHAT MAKE OR BRAKE THE STARS NOT AI. REMEMBER THAT

MplsBrad Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

It is absolutely HILARIOUS how seriously most of you jokers take this show! IT'S NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL. It can be mildly entertaining but NOT TIME TO TURN THE GAS JETS ON. Get a grip! Mike Johns was lame anyway.

MplsBrad Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

lauren Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

I'm definitely not watching IDOL next season...Ryan's cruel exit lines for Michael did me in. Michael is so much better than Carly and Shiesha...I think the fact he went first and the judges ...randy...blasted him for what i thought was a fantastic song, did him in. I hate Idol Gives Back..the show makes so much money they should donate to the needs of Americans...it is AMERICAN idol afterall. I'm finished with the show.

MJ lover Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

If you have a facebook and you belive that mj should have stayed join my group "michael johns should have won american idol"

SADSADSAD Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 01:41 AM EST

It is utterly WRONG to cast such a world class contestant away so disruptly!!!! I was hoping and praying that he will be the next American Idol! MJ is the only one guy that I really look forward to seeing every week...now that he is gone I can afford to miss the show. I have really no mood for it anymore...

michaelfan Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 11:18 PM EST

I will not watch Idol anymore after the way Ryan was so cruel with his comments. I think maybe Ramielle's fans probably gave the girls & others more votes than him. I read that he was going to sing "Vision of Love" by Mariah Carey if he had stayed. He would have done so good since its a bluesy version.

Kari Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 11:05 PM EST

Michael will be missed, but bottom line is that the fans MUST vote as much as possible and not take it for granted that their favorite is safe. I wish it had been Carly, but oh well...at least Jason is still there!

SWIGG Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 10:53 PM EST

I agree with SarahM. It's the worst ever and the good stuff is all over. Carly lied all over the place about her past failures, and Kristy lied about pawning her horse, among other things. I thought I would barf when she sang that proud to be an American song. It was such an obvious ploy. I'm proud to be an American, too, especially one who doesn't tell lies on national TV! Some say Carly and Kristy are 'plants' and made the finals only because someone important wants to regain big bucks spent on Carly's and Kristy's careers. I've heard it's Randy, but I think he's too rich to bother. Paula has pushed for Carla, but she is just silly, not dishonest. It's obviously not Simon, he hates them both. Anyway, if you are still a true believer, check out the Vote for the Worst website. Funny stuff, and some of those lies are even well-documented. I admit, when someone said Carly married her husband only so her name would sound like Kelly Clarkson, I didn't buy it..but it IS so darned funny!!!

SarahM Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 10:06 PM EST

Michael Johns was great see and could sing pretty well, but his vocals never once gave me goosebumps. In fact, this season has pretty much lacked the chills factor.(I mean, will you ever forget Fantasia's Summertime?) Jason has blown me away, little David a couple times, and more recently David Cook moved me, but since Amanda was unfairly dumped for incorrect clothes and hair, the women have all been boring and nondescript, except of course for the horrific Carly, who screeches and grimaces and never fails to disgust me. She's a big liar, too, as is Kristy - google I hate Carly if you want the truth. Kristy sounds like every blah country singer you heard at the state fair, and in fact has the failed albums to prove it. Syesha has the stuff but can't seem to deliver. And Brooke is the definition of insipid (look it up!). This is the worst idol year ever: for instance, remember when the contestants had to be amateurs? I hate to say it, because I have loved the show, but Idol is SO over.

MarioLario Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 09:38 PM EST

Top 2 - David and David duking it out.
One is a rocker, one is an Osmond.
Both are very talented and big potential money-makers for the Idol.
See you at the finals.
And the leftover bunch will probably do OK too.

MJS Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

What the heck is all the fuss about, so MJ got booted, actually, I think there were a couple of times he should have been in the bottom three and dodged a bullet, but come on folks we know the best singers never win this competition, gee let's see who did well without winning...Jennifer Hudson, she won an Oscar, Chris Daughtry, he's doing ok, Clay Aiken, I think he's making some money, this show is not about singing, and honestly, I'm not sure what it's about, truly isn't about having stage presence or being able to sing live or Carrie Underwood never would have won, she sounds great in a studio, and that's about it. How about the amazing popularity of Taylor Hicks or Ruben Studdard, or even Fantasia and Jordin Sparks, American Idol doesn't make stars at all, and the judges need to understand, this is not about singing, it's about how popular you can become with the voters, so I think the next American Idol will be David Archuleta, hands down, just what I think, could I be right?

bean99 Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

I believe that Michael left too soon. Imo, he was better than 3-4 of the others but unfortunately was splitting votes with David Cook and maybe Jason & Carly. I do hope that he's able to get a contract out of it. Maybe the shocking boot publicity will help. He has the talent and looks to make it. I'm looking forward to his future cd.

The show won't be the same without him and agree that Ryan/producers were too cruel getting his (and ours) hopes up. I'm not sure if I'll be supporting any of the others although I do like DC and Carly.

Cheryl Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

First of all, I'm not a tween, or teeny bopper, but, I love Jason Castro. He gets my votes. Having said that, the reason he is still on the show is that he is unique, and, original. Shame on some of you MJ fans for name calling. Was MJ going to win? Probably not. He had some hit and miss performances. His ouster had nothing to do with his age. Remember Taylor Hicks was 29 when he won AI. MJ will have a career ahead of him, if Dolly Parton keeps her word. So, cheer up. He didn't die, he was just invited to leave last week. He'll be back on the finale, and, on the tour. Every year, people get upset because their favorite has to leave, but, that is the nature of the beast on Idol. I won't stop watching if Jason leaves, nor will I stop voting. Because if it comes down to a David vs. David finale, my votes will go to Cookie. David A. is too young to handle a win of this magnitude. Kid needs to be playing baseball, going to school functions, and hanging out with friends.

Shannon Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 05:02 AM EST

I just can't get over the cruel and unnecessary way they let Michael leave. It really gave me a bad taste in my mouth after the warm fuzziness of Idol Gives Back week. I will not be donating to IGB next year (I'll send my money elsewhere)having realised Idol is just another Fox Shock reality show.

I was a big fan of Michael's, he was my favorite this year. Because am a thirty something mom with three kids I wasn't speed dialing for MJ but I tried to vote as much as I could. He was the total package and I'm glad he didn't let the judges mold him into what they wanted. I think you lose credibility in the real world if you do. Keep on rockin' Michael!

Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 02:13 AM EST

I forgot to freakin' vote!! That would have been another vote for Micheal. I felt bad for him as well as Amanda when she was voted off. I agree with all the others, that it was horribly rude of the producers and Ryan to taunt Micheal with the hope that he would get to stay. GGRRRRR!!!!

Vader Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 12:59 AM EST

As Simon has mentioned before, this contest is about a combination of singing ability and popularity. Randy is a moron for believing that the contest should be purely based on the singing. AI aims to find the next IDOL, the very definition of IDOL requires the winner to be IDOLISED, which more or less translates to being popular. Any church choir singer can sing well, so should they all be superstars then? Obviously not. They need to be marketable, be it from looks, charisma, stage presence, or some other X-factor.

Hey empty911 Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

I feel your pain. And frustration.
Simon hates doing the show, he admitted it on CNN. Who's pulling the stings? Was puppet Ryan told to say what he did, yes, and he said it to keep his job. It's the dog-eat-dog of the Hollywood world. Reality sucks but it makes money.
Fear not. The IDOL machine will die once Simon leaves. Count on it.

angel Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

i cant understand why kristi cook is still there and all of the really good singers with a real future are gone... im dumbfounded and appauld that this is contest is about looks and not talent.

K.TAYLOR Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 07:15 PM EST

It seems like American Idol is a popularity contest rather than an talent contest to select the Best entertainer, American Idol needs to look at its rules & come up with better ways to judge @ contestant

standupgal Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 06:52 PM EST

MJ was def eye candy. however, he was awkward on his feet,(which could be be overlooked easily), but was not a terribly good singer. AND to respond to the "shout to the lord" comments....if i want to hear christian or gospel music, i would tune to those chanels....however, I DO NOT want to hear it from dolly, or cary or anyone else on a reality show...charity or not....

anna bicking Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

i think michael johns was so wonderful with his singing he should have never got voted off that was a bog mistake

amm Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

Please someone get Michael Johns a record deal soon! He was the only reason that I was watching AI.

emtp911 Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

I for one, hope this is the last season for AI. Everyone on the show seems to be getting more and more rude as the season goes on. Now it's down to Ryan even getting in on the tacky & " I can't believe he said that" comments. Refering to his comment about last year no one went home on Gives Back week. How cruel!
I for one, again, don't want to be so called "entertained" by having someone beg me to please send money. It reminded me of a PBS telethon.
Did Michael Johns get ousted because he wasnt American? and this is American Idol?
Well then why do we have a non-American judge
Simon
Contestants singing non-American songs
David Archuletta
And the money they want us to give going to a non-American country
Africa
I'm through with American Idol

Djulka Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

To all conspiracy theorists
I was checking various dialer sites while voting on Tuesday. I live in Hawaii...the last time zone. I found it curious that the Hawaii votes did not change the stats by even a 100th of a percentage point. Hawaii voters would have swarmed to vote for Jason since his song played homage to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. As we know from the Jasmine Trias season...Hawaii knows how to vote. Given the outcome I am more likely to look at the results with raised eyebrows. Yes, I did vote for Michael..as did many of my friends in Hawaii. While these dialer sites could be inaccurate, it just makes me wonder...things that make you go hmmm!

geeg to everyone Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

I just really looked at the photo on the top of the article and just look at how emotional Carly is and look at the stone faced Syesha. Is she just shocked or is she like,'Yeaaa I made it to Mariah week'.? I tend to think that she is the best thing since sliced bread..lol Maybe she needs to get a reality check. But you know even if she does think she is 'it' can she show some compassion or at least look like she cares. I'm sorry if I offended anyone by my opinion. But remember it's just my opinion

geeg to everyone Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

sorry about the duplicate posting..I've said it before about David A. I think he is too young to win this competition. Yeah I know Jordin was also 17 when she won, but her maturity was more developed than his.You can see his nervousness after his performance, when he has his little chat with Ryan before his perfomance, his package reel and when his waiting to see if he is safe on elimination night.I think he is sooo talented listen to him on You-tube. He is more in his element(he's comfortable). But I just don't think the real world would be kind to him.Or maybe the real world would not let him be who he wants to be, like it seems his father does to him.Just my opinion.

I have one thing to say. No matter who was booted off this week,(I know it was MJ) I think the way it was done was cruel and disgraceful.I personally don't think that MJ should have been booted this week, but like I said no matter who it was, it was cruel in the manner that it was done. Maybe AI will read these posts and do something about it.An apology or what, I don't know. But they have done something about those obnoxious moshpitters. So maybe.Someone said it on another posting that this show has definitely 'jumped the shark'.It says its 'live', yeah maybe the actual results, but not the entire show. It's just 'the fine print' that nobody ever hears or reads.Cynical yes but how else are we all supposed to feel when things like this happen.

I was shocked that he got the boot.I agree that his age probaly was a factor and it looks bad on them when they talk back to the judges.I hope that he gets a record deal soon.I'd buy his CD.

Betty Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

This has been the worse year ever on American Idol. It seems no one is voting for singing talent this year. Michael was absolutley one of the best ever as is Carly, & look @ her being there among the bottom also while Jason, ("Tiny Tim" look a like) seems to be doing great. How in the world can this be!!??? Are we voting for comedy acts now? instead of singing talent??

James Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 12:20 PM EST

I think a lot of those who liked Michael were not voting for him, while the others had dedicated fans power-dialing -- at least this week. As far as not getting through by phone, use one of the free text message services on the web (search for one). You always get through and there's no cost.

Djulka Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

Irene...in answer to your question, someone posted these e-mail on the AI website. askfox@fox.com; Ryan@eonline.com; Ryan@kiisfm.com I e-mailed a letter to all. I chided them for their shockingly crude choice of words during Johns exit speech. I also let them know that their choice to oust an idol in such an uncharitable manner was contrary to this weeks theme. What irony...An artist tells everyone about his hopes and dreams and then AI dashes them while toying with his emotions. In a sense they emotionally manipulated the entire audience. I don't EVER post notes & vent on the internet but last weeks show left me posting messages all over the net. I would have totally soured by AI if not for Johns passionate exit performance.

Natalia Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

You know what! ... I to had problems voting for MJ ... I usually would get the busy single .. and I thought well he is getting a lot of votes! so I started to vote for David Cook. And once in a while vote for MJ when I was able ... but most of the time I could not get a line for MJ! .... hhmmmm

Leila Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

I think David Cook is the one who probably took a lot of votes from Michael Johns. Cook grew in the competition, while Michael was kinda hit or miss. Jason Castro also gets a lot of votes based on his looks and hipness. Archuleta's and MJ's fans are not the same type of people, definitely.

IRENE Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN!!!!!! MICHAEL JOHNS SHOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN THE LEAST NUMBER OF VOTES. IF ANYONE ELSE HAD MY EXPERIENCE, IT MIGHT EXPLAIN WHY IT HAPPENED. I ACTUALLY TOOK THE TIME TO VOTE FOR HIM REDIAL AFTER REDIAL FOR OVER AN HOUR. I GOT IN 2 VOTES(NOT THAT I APPROVE OF THIS MULTIPLE VOTING, BUT THAT'S THE WAY IT IS DONE BY EVERYONE ELSE); THE REST OF THE TIME THE "TRUNK LINES WERE BUSY" (95% OF THE TIME); GOT MAYBE 5 BUSYS(THAT'S OK); AND A COUPLE TIMES, I GOT DEAD AIR--NOTHING. WAS THIS COMMON TO JUST MICHAEL JOHNS' VOTE LINE---IF SO, THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM. THERE ARE PROBABLY 100'S OR EVEN 1000'S OF VOTES THAT DID NOT GET THROUGH IF ANYONE ELSE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. WHERE CAN I/WE COMPLAIN.

debi Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

personally, i am boycotting "idol" the rest of the season. i LOVED michael, but his leaving was just the straw that broke the camel's back of a long list of reasons to no longer watch the show. i.e. ryan's rude smugness, which has just gotten worse this year, and paula's ever increasing "huh?" comments involving the colors and textures of someone's voice. without michael there, i see no reason to put up with it anymore. "idol"--good riddance. michael--i love you!!! keep rocking!

Monee Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

I find it hard to believe that Syesha has raked up enough fans to outlast the middle-aged women fantasy, Michael Johns. While she is talented, her song selection has had to be the worst, thus far.

MyOpinion Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 09:00 AM EST

I'm going to be analytical here. Micheal probably knew he wasn't going to win, but to go this quickly was a shocker. Everyone is hoping for at least, a top 4 or 5. And Davis Cook is probably nervous about actually having a shot at winning this thing, you know, the pressure of being a Clarkson or Underwood, and the lack of artistic control. It can be duel edged sword.
I think Archuleta is the best candidate to win, if your looking for a generic, money-making machine. He's got the pipes, not to mention the gals in his pocket.

mary Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

I would like to congratulate my favorite american idol Carly. She is one of my favorite, and Michael Johns those two american idol singer are very very good on stage. And My question is why the people did'nt vote Michael Johns to stay on stage? they supposed to vote ysesha,Kristine Lee,and Jason because those tree are not really good on stage. but we cant blame people because everyone has their favorite. But please vote the best american singer idol because there are so many good singer idol singer.Ysesha my comment to her is , she over power her voice not really good. And Kristine her voice is good only for a country songs other than that she out of tune. And Jason his voice was very low and not really good compare to David, Michael, and the young 17 year old idol those tree are very very good on stage.

Michael was by no means the weakest contestant among the top 8, but he's not a top contender either. His pitching is poor, his falsetto is dreadful, and his voice is very one-dimensional. I'd rather have seen Carly leave, because she's completely lacking in star quality, and she's highly annoying, plus there's nothing special about her voice. But Michael doesn't deserve to win the competition anyway, so his exit isn't a huge loss.

Harriette Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 07:49 AM EST

I don't agree that Ryan was following cues and directions. From his bantering with Simon Ryan is much more cruel that Simon. As for MJ he is wonderful and hopefully he'll go the way of Doughtry. It all depends on how smart he is in obtaining the right representation

leo Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 06:26 AM EST

gotta love that look on syesha's face when ryan announced michael's name, and carly hugged her as the audience booed... it said, what you cryin' for, girl? better him than us!

Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 04:50 AM EST

Is American Idol aware that the phone lines were tampered with? I tried to vote six separate times and each time the call was redirected to a sex hotline or to a taped message requesting a special code.

bella Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 04:42 AM EST

Michael Johns was a cut above everybody else, I think he was just way to cool and sophisticated for the show. It has turned into a voting competition, which the tweenies dominate, because if it was based purely on talent, he would have made the final 2. After watching him being interviewed today it really showed just how impressive he is, very very charismatic and engaging, such a natural, it is such a pity we did not get to see more of his wonderful personality while on the show. I think as the show progressed he would have shown just how good he is, his rendition of Dolly Parton's "its all wrong its all right" was one of the best ever performances on AI. He mentioned that he was going to do a bluesy rendition of a Mariah Carey song next week, it is such a pity we will not get to see that, instead it will the bland, blander and blandest of the remaining middle of the road contestants, instead of the talented, gorgeous and hot Michael Johns.

u5 Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 03:57 AM EST

Al & laura, i totally agree with u. This is all a fix-up. MJ has all-star quality, performance & amazing vocals. Also he has the aura that melts ladies heart. He would had more to show if given chance

Raven_Moon Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 02:35 AM EST

I thought it was Syesha's time to go. I mean, really; it's kind of lame that she sung a song a former winner had to sing. Michael John's didn't deserve that. Also, the whole bringing up that no one was forced to leave the show after "Idol Gives Back" last year was really messed up. I hope they show a bit more class & sensitivity in the future.

Djulka Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 02:18 AM EST

Roger Swanton you make a good point. I am in your age range & thought Michael was the best I'd seen AI. I am old enough to have seen Aerosmith when THEY were young(er). He really did rock that song...what passion! I give Michael Johns credit for his musical chops. Think about it..some of the AI kids were unfamiliar with the Beatles..come on! COME ON! I read an online interview of Johns today and I am impressed with the fact that he refuses to be pigeonholed into a genre. Isn't that refreshing! I found some of his songs online...and those of other contestants. He IS the bomb! Poor Carly...I heard some clips she sang that sounded like they were trying to Madonna-ize her. That is the music industry..synthesize something and then clone it a million times. Sorry but I don't even like the original Madonna. Here is a radical idea..let them sing original songs one night..that would really separate the karaoke from true artists.

Sandi Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 01:54 AM EST

Let me repeat this once again, limit the votes to one per household. The reason David A. and Jason C. are getting all the votes is because all the tweens keep hitting redial for hours! One girl admitted to voting for David A. over one-hundred times. Give me a break. David A. sings well enough, but he has no stage presence, he just stands still, closes his eyes and licks his lips. I wouldn't go to a free concert to hear him, but I would pay 150 dollars to see Michael Johns. When he sings he performs like a star. I don't mean to put David A. down, really. He has a nice voice, but not star quality. So....Thank the tweens for AI results, they just vote for who they think is "cute!!"

Though I am not American, I enjoy the show and I am a fan of Michael Johns, and support him all the way. It was a real shock to us all who really liked the way he is , so cool, with good personality , good voice, thinking he may end up for the last two, and wow...really shock to see him go at the last eight. We predict that all youngsters vote for the young singers or beautiful ladies, but that is not the point, we must be fair to choose the good singer instead of picking the good looking instead. I hope Michael Johns will succeed in his singing once he made the CD. Good luck Michael!

Regarding MJ's supposedly having the lowest number of votes, I believe that the producers made the decision to send him home. For those of you who are not aware of this, there is a disclaimer in the credits at the end every show, saying that the producers reserve the right to intervene. I think they chose to eliminate him now for at least two reasons: one, people wouldn't be expecting it, so it makes for good TV, and two, they knew that a guy who emigrated here from Australia would never get voted in as American Idol.

You know, I actually loved Michael's version of "Dream On." He gave a cool bluesy vibe to everything he did, and I, for one, loved every minute of it. But look, every time they've had the call-in part of the show, when you look at the roster of callers, they're all like 12 or 13 years old. It shows their ages, and 90% of the time they're "tweeners." And that's fine, they have a right to love Archie & Jason Castro. They vote, and that's the only reason MJ was voted off. The demographic of the show is predominately teens, and they're just not going to go with a mature blues sound. But to me, (in my mid-forties,) Michael was fantastic.

Second thing, to those of you whining about "Shout to the Lord": Look people, its only a song. It has a beautiful sweeping melody with a great crescendo. If you're not into Jesus, just look the other way. Life's not Burger King, and no, you can't always have it "your way." Get over yourselves!

I feel a little better after reading Michael's exit interview that he is already thinking about a CD. And that he got calls from Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman and Dolly. Wow. Somebody's going to help this guy. He deserves it.

The problem with AI is that the artists sing cover songs. Admittedly they are the songs that we love, but a career was never made doing covers. Some former idols are relegated to singing at farm fairs because they lack depth & originality. Michael Johns didn't show the full range of his talents because of the limitation of the show format. I Googled Michael & discovered a Facebook page with songs he recorded on an independent label. He is awesome! REALLY great songs..with witty lyrics. I would have been so great to hear one of these songs on AI. I was shocked & appalled with yesterdays results. While AI is grooming the "Lost Osmond of the 21st Century" I will look forward to voting with my wallet and buy Michael's next album.
