TV's most gloriously gratuitous scenes ever!

Apr 28, 2008, 02:32 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: 100% Pure Cheese, Apropos of Nothing, Television

Let's list 'em. I'll start with the excessively shirtless opening of last Friday's Moonlight (below). Not that I — or Slezak — minded. (And, hello: according to our Hollywood Insider blog, it might've just helped earn the vampire drama a second season.)

Your turn. Name your favorite gloriously gratuitous scenes. I imagine with Sweeps, the list will only be growing...

It's good! rolex watch?
luxury watch?

Alex O'loughlin from CBS/Moonlight with or without clothes period.

Mav Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

Any Bette and Tina sex scene from the L Word

peppermintwisty Tue, Apr 29, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

Queer As Folk! Any scene with Brian & Justin is always delicious and lovely. ;)

Lise Tue, Apr 29, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

Daytime TV can be the pinnacle of gratuity - on One Life to Live, they have scenes taking place in the co-ed steam room in like every other episode. The conversations the characters have could there just as easily take place at a coffee shop! (Not that I am complaining)

Amanda Tue, Apr 29, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

Any, any, any scene from Veronica Mars with Logan shirtless. I'm a total sucker for shoulder freckles. Sigh.

VAsusieQ18 Tue, Apr 29, 2008 at 08:37 AM EST

Oh, I totally agree! That scene of Mick walking down the beach with his shirt open and blowing in the wind...Hubba hubba! If thats not worth a 2nd season, I don't know what is! Come on CBS, where's our 2nd Season?!

JennyP Tue, Apr 29, 2008 at 07:58 AM EST

Supernatural. Season one ep Hell House. Jared Padalecki/Sam Winchester in a towel. Hello!! Also Jared/Sam in S2 ep Heart. If you've seen the ep, you know what I'm talking about. WOW!

kell Tue, Apr 29, 2008 at 01:45 AM EST

Brian Austin Green in the shower in "The Sarah Connor Chronicles". Didn't get the point of the scene but good gods if it wasn't made of gratuitous awesome!
ALL the Six/Baltar sex scenes in BSG.

Jhee Tue, Apr 29, 2008 at 01:36 AM EST

Just to geek it up a bit for any trekkies out there, but the infamous "decon" scene from the pilot for Star Trek Enterprise is the textbook definition of gratuitous--two (very attractive) people yelling at each other while they slather gel all over each other's nearly naked bodies.

annie Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 11:09 PM EST

I can't believe no one has mentioned Sawyer's near constant shirtlessness on Lost! The best moment was in Confidence Man when he comes up out of the ocean, very clearly nekkid! It's unfortunate they haven't had as many of those scenes this season!

cimagato Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 10:39 PM EST

Luke in Gilmore Girls, the first time he and Lorelai slept together. Luke, looking fine in that bed, the next morning. Is it me, or is it hot in here?

cimagato Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 10:37 PM EST

OMG! Luke in Gilmore Girls, the first time he and Lorelai slept together. Luke, looking fine in that bed, the next morning. Is it me, or is it hot in here?

sallygee Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

There was one X-Files episode that focused specifically on Skinner, Mulder & Scully's bald-headed boss -- and damned if he didn't look absolutely great, and take his shirt off. I thought I probably was the only person who found him incredibly hot -- till I checked online and found that there were hundreds of women (and men) who were rerunning that scene over and over and over on their VCRs. Ahhh, Director Skinner....!

Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 08:38 PM EST

First thing that came to mind was Friday Night Light's Tim Riggins waking up shirtless during season One...yeah alot of ladies liked that one. And heehee....thanks Jennifer for reminding me, Apolo and a towel wowza!

Em Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

I think we can all agree that a good towel scene featuring an attractive and well-built male is a fantastic thing.

Jeanne Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 06:38 PM EST

I'm going way back in time for this one, but my personal favorite in gratuitous nudity is David Duchovny's famous red speedo scene. I know many ladies who wore out their VHS copies of that episode.

kim in kentucky Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

anyone remember the episode of NYPD Blue which had Jimmy Smits lying in bed naked with just a sheet covering just a smidge of him??? damn!!

Henry Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

The Six/Baltar sex scenes in the Battlestar Galactica mini-series before Caprica was destroyed. Some of Tricia Helfer's outfits throughout the first season were barely covering much of anything.

There was a Six/Baltar sex scene in a third season episode that was pushing the envelope. A dream sequence from Kara about having sex with Leoben that was also pushing things.

Silv Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

McSteamy in a towel...sizzling! Evie, I remember those first few seconds of Grey's too! That's when I knew it was gonna be a great show!

Abby Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

That scene in "The Tudors" where Brandon and Margaret go at it on the ship. Just thinking about it makes me feel a bit funny.

Crystal Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 04:55 PM EST

I'm with Devin & Ryan. First thing that came to mind was post-Superbowl Alias ep.
I also ditto that there needs to be some sweeps shirtlessness on 'Natch. I love my Winchesters but they are usually in many, many layers. Another good one was Sam's sex scene. Round about 1:32...hello!!

Alex Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

Any scene with Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights. That boy just oozes gratuity! And I agree, we need more Sam and Dean shirtless-ness on Supernatural. Demon-fighting is hot, sweaty work!

Alex Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

Ryan Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

The Super Bowl episode of Alias! Began with Jennifer Garner's Sydney Bristow in both black and red lingerie. "What was wrong with the black one?" Awesome! And yes, the Season 6 Spuffy sexual olympics was great too.

Lauren Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

Phil, I adore both Eric and Jason--the world can never have enough hot smart guys!

Minutiae Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

One that sticks out to me comes from Heroes, where Sylar, supposedly just out of the shower, answers the door for Maya wet and wearing only a towel. I could practically hear all of the Sylar-shippers squeeing nationwide.

Phil Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

And as far as gratuitous scenes go, pick any episode of Nip/Tuck with any number of sexual escapades going on !

Phil Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

Ok, since Eric Mabius and Jason Dohring of Moonlight are both hot, does anyone think how similiar they both looked at one point this Fall season?! I can't be the only one that thinks Jason is a poor man's Eric Mabius strutting around as the 400 yr. old vampire in those suits! It appears to further get away from "that look" Jason dyed his hair darker, or maybe stopped high lighting it for Moonlight's return ep this past Friday! Anyone else notice this!?

Anne Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

In the first episode of "The Tudors". Henry Cavill who plays supporting character Charles Brandon romps in the nude with a young female. When her father walks in on them there's full frontal male nudity -- not that I'm complaining. Since then scenes with a naked Henry in bed with a female have become a noble "Tudors" tradition and long may it be so!

Jennifer Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Two words: Apollo. Towel.

I'll never forget the first 2 seconds of the first Grey's episode ever, where you get to see Patrick Dempsey's bare butt.

ecjb Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

Lauren - you took the words right out of my mouth. That elevator scene had this straight girl questioning a few things too!

JohnO Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

The episode of 90210 where Dylan tries to rescue his stepsister...that ends with Val wearing a skimpy bikini while holding a gun.

Jon Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

Any sex scene between Buffy and Spike in season 6.

Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

Lauren - I'm with ya. If i knew women like that, my life could seriously have gone in a completely different direction. Eric's behind was also pretty nice to look at :)

Cece Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

How about the season opener of Sex and the City when Carrie talks about her love affair with New York. The ladies go to a Fleet Week party and both Samantha and Charlotte flashed their boobs. This followed, of course, Miranda's scene when she was trying to breast feed Brady and the camera was plastered to her chest.

Melanie Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

For those of you that want to see the BSG towel scene, here it is: http://video.aol.com/video-detail/the-famous-towel-scene/2649385333

t3hdow Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

HAHAHAHAHA Lauren. Your last line was priceless.

Honestly, I don't have much to add besides South Park and reality TV, which are always gratuitous to begin with, and the Kate-Juliet mud wrestling bout on Lost was already mentioned. I guess two moments with Gretchen/Susan on Prison Break, season three: the forced bisexual overtones when she speaks to Whistler's girlfriend & the scene when she's pants-less with LJ. It's not nearly as unnecessary compared to some of you guys examples, but none of that was really necessary.

MsDaisy Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

Eric Dane (McSteamy) exiting a steamy bathroom wearing nothing but a towel (almost) around his waist...nice shot of leg and hip!

Kerri Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

Vicky, I just watched it on YouTube. Thank you!!

Lauren Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

Eric Mabius' oh-so-nice bare behind in one of The L Word's few hetero love scenes.

And yeah, The L Word always has gratuitous gettin'-on, but for me one of the most provocative was the recent episode "Liquid Heat." Pretty much every main character involved in giving or receiving, um, pleasure. Plus everyone was sweaty because of the heat wave. This straight girl nearly converted because of that scene. Wow.

jr Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

NatX, you are sooooooooo right about New Amsterdam. The show is terrible. Could be better w/ a better cast (keeping the lead of course!) & a better script. Still, the pool scene was just.... r u kidding!? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Catherine Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

LOOOVE that Lee Adama scene!!!! Excellent call!

Snarf Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

The episode of Supernatural in which Sam answers the phone dripping wet fresh out of the shower with nothing but a towel wrapped around his waist.

Tamara Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

Good call, Melanie. Lee Adama, barely in a towel.

Vicky Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

Haha Kerri - What about the scene in the first season of Supernatural where Sam comes out of the shower with just a towel on? Definitely pointless, but so awesome!

Kerri Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

That one scene in "Supernatural" when Dean and Sam are fighting demons with no shirts on....

oh wait, that actually has never happened. Producers, let's get on that, shall we?? Thanks.

Melanie Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

The Apollo towel scene on Battlestar Galactica... you know the one I'm talking about!

Chaddogg Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

Kate and Juliet wrestling in the mud while handcuffed on Lost.

The famous Quentin Tarantino episode of ER, with the long walk down the hallway in shades by Julianna Margulies and Shelley Stringfield.

Any number of Grey's Anatomy scenes (McSteamy in a towel, anyone?)

And, while not gratuitous, we have to give a special mention to Jack Bauer and the excesses of 24 - Kim & the cougar; Jack cutting off Chase's hand; Jack cutting off the snitch's head and bringing it to infiltrate the terrorists....the list of gratuitous ridiculousness goes on and on.

mscisluv Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

The infamous Grey's Anatomy shower scene after the Super Bowl. "Yo, testosterone-filled men watching football - look at this! Three women showering together! Please watch this show!"

LaTanya Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

the episode of baywatch where cj goes to some fortune teller on the beach and a tarot card gets swept up by the wind and lands on her chest and the camera lingers like 5 seconds and the fortune teller peels it off to tell pamela her fate. even as a kid i rolled my eyes as how blatant that was.

Devin Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

I remember a few episodes of "Alias" that had scenes that existed simply to get Jennifer Garner in as little clothing as possible... the Super Bowl episode comes to mind.

Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

the L word...those ladies are hot!

Meghan Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

Pretty much everything that's shown on Nip/Tuck. Sometimes I can't believe that the stuff they show is okay for TV...not that I'm complaining!

Laura M Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

How about HBO's late, great series "Rome"? That show was the definition of gratuitous.

Nat X Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

Two instances come to mind. The episode "Go Fish" on Buffy. Xander was supposed to be a geeky teen, and suddenly he's in a speedo trying out for the swim team and...GOOD LORD. Footage that good had to make it into the opening credits, naturally. The other instance is a bit more recent. New Amsterdam is a terrible show (is it still on?) but the dude is HOT. First episode, they have him swimming in a pool...for absolutely no other reason than for his new cop partner to track him down at the pool and witness him in all of his soaking wet glory. GOOD LORD AGAIN!

Ceballos Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

As for TV, I'd go with Mario Lopez's shower scene in the fourth season of "Nip/Tuck." It was Cinemax-esque in the way it was photographed and scored.

Also, the opening credits of any season of "Baywatch". I mean, honestly, you can just watch the opening credits, and you're good.

Oola Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

Everybody and their mother having to show their butt in a shower scene on NYPD Blue

Ceballos Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

It's not a TV show, but Halle Berry in "Swordfish."

Her topless scene had nothing to do with the plot of that lackluster film, and was pretty much there because for "hey, here are my breasts! you've always wanted to check them out. Here they are". Then again, I haven't seen the film in years (in all of its subsequent FX airings). Maybe that scene (which can't be in the FX version) actually taught us something about the character that I missed.
