Celebrity apologies I couldn't bring myself to care about

1) Two weeks after Jay Leno's cringeworthy interview with Ryan Phillippe, in which he asked the actor to relive his earliest gig (as a gay teen on One Life to Live) by offering the camera his "gayest look" (see clip below), the Tonight host has issued an apology to gay people and whoever else was offended. Which is nice, but Leno's done this before (just a couple years ago) and may well do it again, given the opportunity. Dude's giving up his chair to Conan in a year; what's he got to lose? Kudos to Avenue Q playwright Jeff Whitty, who first confronted Leno this time (and two years ago, as well), but it seems doubtful that anything is going to change, or that any Leno fans who were truly outraged will do anything as drastic as switch allegiance to Letterman.

2) A few days after New York magazine's film critic David Edelstein peed on the fresh grave of director Anthony Minghella, Edelstein is apologizing, sort of. He essentially suggested that, after Minghella's brilliant, personal, small-scale first film Truly Madly Deeply, Minghella devolved into a middlebrow hack who made overrated Oscar-bait movies (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain), for which devolution Edelstein blamed the heavy hand of then-Miramax co-chief Harvey Weinstein. In his apology, Edelstein's not backing down from his opinion of Minghella's work, but he's sorry for blaming Weinstein, though he insists that the famously arm-twisting mogul did not twist his arm to wrest this mea culpa.

Now, reasonable people can disagree on the merits of Minghella's work (if anything, argues EW's Mark Harris, Minghella didn't get enough credit for the careful crafting of his movies), and a lot of folks (a la Seinfeld's Elaine) really didn't get The English Patient and found it long-winded and boring. Of course, that's another argument against Edelstein's earlier thesis that "Harvey Scissorhands" snipped Minghella's work too eagerly in the editing room. So what Edelstein's concession seems to say is: Sorry, Harvey, that I blamed you for your recently deceased friend's hackery; apparently, he became a hack all by himself. That's supposed to sound less rude and insulting?

UPDATE: And now, it's time for my own apology, to David Edelstein, who, in the comments below, writes that I have mischaracterized his initial article and accused him of saying something he explicitly did not say. I apologize for my use of the words "hack" and "hackery," which overstate Edelstein's description of what he sees as the decline in the quality of Minghella's post-Truly work. I should have taken him at his word that he did not mean to go so far as to call Minghella a hack, just as I am willing to take Edelstein's word that no Weinstein arm-twisting prompted his apology. By the way, no arm-twisting prompted mine, either.

I believe the problem is not gay or lesbian or Jay Leno and his humor. I believe Jimmie (See Below) is an example of the true problem...it looks like at least one child got left behind. Stay in school my friend, don't be the problem, be the solution.

James C Mon, Apr 7, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

Why does society (and the Christian segment, in particular, not to point fingers) make such a big deal about the whole GAY thing? It's just a guy loving a guy -- or a girl loving a girl. Why the drama? It is really quite inconsequential. Moreover, it is in no way sinful, no matter what anyone may tell you. It just isn't.

As for Jay, I think this whole thing was overblown, with no need for an apology -- but perhaps the hypersensitive reaction by the gay community is not to this particular incident so much as it is to a steady stream of derision coming from The Tonight Show.

MarkmyWord Mon, Apr 7, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

Apologize? For? Oh, that's right. The sexually confused have an inate sense of wrong and need apologies from everyone else to soothe their troubled conscious.

bob Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 04:58 PM EST

Get a life. RP defused it, there is MUCH worse out there, there's nothing to apologize for, in some Leno-lame ways it's positive.

It seems that fighting and hating is what humans do best. And we are the civilized ones? If there is a god in heaven and he is looking at the whole human race he knows we will never get it. What a lot of problems we make!!

Why are all these folks mostly jews? Marlon Brando said Jews run entertainment. He was right on the money. Thats why most Americans are in la la land. 400 dead soldiers and all we hear is from those who have the most to gain from the blood. Jews should get out of show biz and go to Iraq.

SSGDave Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

Personally, i doubt there's any reason for apologies-if hyper-sensitive people get offended, let them. it's Thier problem, not ours.

"The only people who are going to go to Hell are the "Christians" anyway. (Judeo-Christian-Islamic, which is the same religion)"

Wow, THAT'S a Queer statement-above..

Not only is in inherently dishonest, and full of out right LIES about people of faith, and the world's major religions, it ALSO makes many homosexuals appear to be very dishonest, bigoted and biased/intolerant in their opinions themselves..

But WAIT!

That's what most politicized 'gays' are anyway..

While most people of faith are busy trying to protect their kids in schools systems which, via the 'gay-thought-polic' are strongarmed to belly up to the twisted homo-protocol..

Enough of your lies, double standards, slanders to the faithful AND the average American family..

No one likes you anymore, if they ever did..

You're behavaing badly..

"gays"..

Wait, again, not a new one..

(And find some new folks to blame your sorry, lying slanderings and attitutdes on, rather than the world's good and decent faithful, who HOLD most communities up!!!)

You're really a blind and thankless crew..

Get a life, 'gays'..

Michael Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

The only people who are going to go to Hell are the "Christians" anyway. (Judeo-Christian-Islamic, which is the same religion) So it really doesn't matter what they think of gays. A good Hell for the "Christians" would be a place where they are the only straights. All other religions will reincarnate until they get it, then go to heaven.

Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

I believe its time for people to stop whining every time a comedian (or anyone who lives in america and has free speech rights) makes a comment pertaining to your specific group or cause you follow.
How can anyone let words hurt them? They are just that... words.
Americans grow up and get a thicker skin. Its time to stop being a victim of everything. Live your life and let others live theirs.

Porchdog Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

When Are the average, majority of Americans going to stand up for themselves and why do "gays", always seem to want not equal rights but more rights than the majoity. I could care less how you get your cookies off, but don't tell my school age kids that your life style is normal. This country was built on Judio=Christian value systems, Grow up Whitty and stop trying to take away my late evening TV because you are the one that seems to have a slew of issues, and we should not have to cave into your hang-ups.

SHOCKED Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

Wow...there are a lot of bitter people out there with "an opinion". Most of them are the married-types (living a double life) that visit their gay desires (you know who you are) in secret. God Bless America. And to "stay on the subject", Leno was wrong and he is already paying the price. Making a joke at the expense of someone else shows a lack of character. Good luck Leno.

basher Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

I miss the 60s and 70s when you never had to hear or see the faggots.

Dena Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 08:37 AM EST

Who cares? People need to get over this politically correct crap and stop worrying about who's feelings they're hurting. Get over yourself and learn to take a joke! The world did not revolve around you yesterday, and it will not revolve around you tomorrow. If you're going to live an alternative lifestyle, be prepared to take flak, thicken your skin, and just grow up.

Will Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 07:41 AM EST

In regard to Jim's and other's comments about being gay as a choice of "lifestyle." Please do not speak on behalf of those whose experience of life you will never know nor understand. Being gay is no more a choice than choosing the color of one's eyes or skin. Being gay extends far beyond sexual preference, it is about having the freedom to love whomever one chooses to love. Ignorance, intolerance, and hatred, however, are dead-end choices, regardless of social standing, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc., one ascribes to. I hope you will reconsider your stance beyond stereotyping and labeling whomever, and wish for others only that which you wish for yourself.

Jim Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 05:21 AM EST

Well I'm sorry their queer also. If you don't want to be called it don't be it. If you want to be a queer be a queer but quit blubbering 'cause MOST of the mainstream population makes fun of your CHOICE of lifestyle. I said choice 'cause any natural homosexual couples would've been bread out before it could become an issue simply 'cause animals can't plan like that not breeding would've removed them from the gean pool while we were still monkeys. So get a grip, face facts, and just face up to your choice, and finally get over yourselves.

James Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 11:45 PM EST

Homophobic and no fear?
Gays going to hell because they are gay and straight people going to Heaven because they are straight? REALLY... Is that the criteria?
In my life I have taken in 3 teenagers (all straight) that their parents and society tossed to the street and wrote off. They are all adults and productive members of society. I have helped build and work in shelters (human and animal) Have worked in correctional centers, taught school, supported my 'granchildren' and I am going to hell for being such a bad person. REALLY? Well than I guess thats where I need to be. And I wasn't offended by Jay Leno, but Ryan sure looked pissed. Shouldn't offend your guest. But screw everyone else. Humor is in the eyes of the beholder, you will never make em all happy. Just be yourself and try to make as many people laugh as you can...especially the gays since so many people think were going to hell no matter what we do in our lives. When I get there...a fabulous makeover for Satan!!

jayster08 Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 08:18 PM EST

The gay thought police strike again.

Porchdog Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

Jay, Why on earth do you think you have to apologize for anything you say? We are loosing our rights one by one to special interest groups. Do you apologize to the poloticians for making a funny, I think not, These people need to get over themselves and this is what causes people to dispise them and there special rights. Don't worry Jay, the majority of us could care less about a funny or who it might offend. Get over it, it seems that your are coming from a place of jealousey and envey, To attack what a Late night talk show host says.

Sondra Johnson Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

Boooooooooooo! Booooooooooo! You are bigger than that Jay. It wouldn't have hurt your reputation one iota if you hadn't apologized. I'm let down by you..........

theonebigjohn Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 09:28 AM EST

Man, I knew a lot on Americans were stupid but never realised how many homophobic and prejudiced individuals still think that gay is wrong or unnatural. Just goes to so how ignorant so many are. Personally it does not bother me what Jay says as I have never watched the show. Too low brow. Oops, sorry Neanderthals didn't mean to insult you by comparing you to Homo sapiens.

Matt Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 04:18 AM EST

Let's see how many Jokes can be made without making fun of someone, somebody, or some kind of group? It's almost impossible. Plus Jokes would get Very Boring. Maybe we need to Outlaw Comedy. GET A LIFE PEOPLE!!

Poor Dear Sondra to think Jay had to blow the gay community oh wait I see you said bow to the Gay community......Wow what a relief lmao

vishvickie Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

Poor Jay , It`s not only because he is gay but because he is black!!!!!! when will these racists leave us alone lol

Ray Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

He is a comedian! He is supposed to make us laugh! Which he did. People need to get over themselves, gay, straight, whatever man. Gay is crutch.

ryan Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

There is no such thing as someone being homophobic. People are not "afraid" of gay people. They simply are repulsed by their sexual preference. And if you truly are gay, you also are repulsed by the straight person's sexual preference. This has nothing to do with fear. The word Homophobic is simply a verbal "rallying point" for those with a political agenda.

Sondra Johnson Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

I'm very disappointed in you Jay...to feel you have to bow to the gay community. You are a cmmedian and they should consider that. If they can't take the heat they should stay out of the kitchen!!

a little odd Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

Is homophobic-phobic a word? I think it should be.

Buttons Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

PLEASE---Give me a break. I see no reason for the Gay community to be bent out of shape over what Jay Leno said and did. I am VERY close to some Gays, who also agree. GET A LIFE , and live it.

MICHAEL Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

Why should straight people be forced to accept as normal that which they know is not normal? Homosexuality is a dysfunctional condition. Persons of the same sex cannot mate.
The emperor has no clothes.

RayT Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Leno was actually making fun of the the bad acting, writing, and stereotyped characterizations on soap operas, making fun of the way gay characters are portrayed ON SOAP OPERAS and not actual gay people but I guess everyone loves a good manufactured controversy. It gives everyone an opportunity to write incredibly hateful, racist, and homophobic posts on message boards. Thanks Jeff Whitty!

Patricia Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

Why is it ok for Leno to berate Gays but it is not ok for Imus to say "nappy head"? The morality in America has fallen, people dont know the difference between respect and ignorance.Pretty sad!!

H W Gear Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

The main point is we are all going to die and where will we go? Some will go to heaven (the saved) and some will go to hell (the unsaved - including queers)!!!!

Mark Myword Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

If gay persons are not ashamed of their behavior, why is it an issue? Obviously, there is an inate sense of wrong or it would not bother them.

Oh you poor widdle straight people. gettin picked on by the gays? aww. cry me a frickin river. least you are full-rights citizens. tho i do agree that the jay leno thing was no big deal

maestro Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

Did anyone notice that Leno makes fun of EVERYONE?? Come, on. Get a life. Complain about something important. It is OK for "gays" to call straights "Breeders", but let one straight person make any sort of remark about "gays", the stuff hits the fan. What happened to tolerance? It goes both ways, folks.

Valhalla_52 Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

After 55 years of living as a Black Man on this land that YOU (whites)call america,I finally understand!!
It's OK (even good)for Two white men to make fun of gays, but NOT OK for one Black Man (Isaiah Washington)to indirectly callout one white man for being gay.
THANKS FOR ENLIGHTENING ME.

redman Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 12:48 AM EST

Why?????? 1000 times why apologize???

Bradley Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 09:45 PM EST

Im gay and i was watching the Leno episode. I thought the comment was kind of stupid and watching Ryan squirm was almost funny but all in all it as just kinda cheesy. I dont recall being offended and forgot about it 15 mins later now its all over the news.... I dont get it. was just cheap stupid humor.. not what i would call hateful, i have experienced real homophobia including bashing but Leno didnt set my radar off. people are overreacting.

Eddie Sullivan Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 09:21 PM EST

I have been watching Jay Leno for years and I remember as far back as 1986- yes- 1986- (when he filled in for Carson)-that Leno has been making jokes aimed at gay people. There have been many many more than just two incidents. I honestly think he actually has something vindictive against them! Jay is a very funny man- now mind you- but the gay stuff has got to stop! I know I know- freedom of speech- what a world- what a world..

Mike Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 09:02 PM EST

Why do we care what "Gays" think anyway? Every group is made fun of and exploited for comedy. Why is it only ok for Gays to make "Gay Comedy" or Blacks to make "Black Comedy" for that matter? Its what people hate about Liberalism and Political correctness thats making this country suck. The majority caves to this constant whining from Minorities. I say Screw em and if they dont like it then dont watch the show.

David Edelstein Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

I shouldn't bother to reply (what's the point?), but Gary Susman's assertion that in my original post I "essentially suggested that, after Minghella's brilliant, personal, small-scale first film Truly Madly Deeply, Minghella devolved into a middlebrow hack" is explicitly belied by this line in the piece: "I am not remotely suggesting here that Minghella sold out and became a Hollywood hack: Every one of his films was an attempt to merge his own bold, socially committed sensibilities with the insistent demands of his shmasters." That last word is an example of where I was being an a-hole--the most serious problem with what I wrote. Anyway, there is enough to criticize in my piece without mischaracterizing it.

Nix Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 06:57 PM EST

I take extreme offense at the suggestion that a film critic is a celebrity. That is an insult to the noble art of celebrity as practiced by rich blond girls acting dumb everywhere.

Eileen Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

Re: Jay Leno. Not sure what hub bub is about. Even Ellen interviewed Ryan about the show where he played the first overtly gay individual on a soap. But since I'm not a fan of Ryan's I pretty much channel surfed while he was on. He's about as exciting as a wet noodle.

Jelana Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

I "got" The English Patient. I saw the nuanced direction, action and story. It still sucked. Just because something is crafted well doesn't make it interesting.

ruth, graniteville, sc Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

ho hum who cares

Snarky Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

The two worst "apologies" were dog the bounty hunter (is he a "celebrity"????) and the guy from Grey's Anatomy - I mean, really, rehab for saying "fa**ot" Really? Did you go to Promises or the place in Utah like Lohan?

To CC Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

The Mark Harris column about the Jimmy Kimmel video last month is completely different and you know it. And many of the people-including myself-who responded on those 16 pages were gay themselves. Get off your high horse.

Mike Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

So confused by this blog post. If you don't care about these 'apologies,' then why are you writing about them? In fact, I think you DO care, and are more offended by the apologies than the original behavior. Moreover, your anger toward David Edelstein is palpable. And finally, I think your summary of Edelstein ("He essentially suggested that...") completely misrepresents what Edelstein wrote.

paige Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

i agree with that article on anthony minghella... i dont see how thats peeing on his grave.

Eric Friedmann Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

I don't believe that celebreties make public apologies for any other reason than to save their pathetic careers. I think I'd have more respect for them if they just stuck to their guns; at least it would be honest!

Snarf Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

Leno is about as relevant as a bowl of soggy cornflakes and half as funny.

vw Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

stupid is as stupid does. seriously? peeing on someone's grave in protest? what's the matter, are you missing the 60's? go get a life why don't cha and stop acting like the angry little boy you are. no one's impressed. and find a toilet.

Nee Nee Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

Do ya really think Leno meant it in an offensive manor? Seriously? I think that's getting a little picky. No, I don't watch Leno. I don't find him all that funny. But I don't think it was a "jab" at the gay community or any gay person, at that. Sometimes a battle is just not worth fighting. Save it for something a little more obvious.

SH Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

Who cares about that DONKEY (said like Chef Ramsey) Leno anyway?

evie Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

I can't imagine any gay people--or gay-friendly people--have the poor taste to watch Leno, anyway....

CC Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

According to the 16 pages of responses from the recent Mark Harris column, we're supposed to get over it. I wonder if any of those people are willing to go look at the links of 'gay faces' Jeff Whitty's page provides.
