Which (non-horrible) 'inspirational songs' should the Idols sing tonight?

Apr 8, 2008, 07:38 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Idolatry

Annie Barrett and I brainstorm a set list for the eight remaining American Idol contestants, including numbers from En Vogue, Tom Petty, and Irene Cara. Think of this episode as Idolatry Gives Back, and after you've watched, get in the spirit and make some suggestions of your own. Otherwise, you'll have no one to blame but yourself when someone sings "I Believe I Can Fly" or "Flying Without Wings."

johnnyD Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

a message for Carly Smithson: i believe in you. but you have to work with me here. your gloomy song choice was not inspirational... it was desperational! way to go, reminding us one more time in your intro that the industry knocked you down. i am about to give up. Carly Hennessey was fun! And her hair was curly! and i'm sorry your CD didn't sell, but i bought it on eBay last week and it's good. and i bet you were smiled effortlessly back then. bring some joy next week - if there is a next week.

Luv4DC Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:07 PM EST

I'm looking forward to David Cook's performance the most. I know Brooke and David A.'s performances will be boring as usual. Brooke does the same thing each and every week. David A.'s performance will probably be Disney-ish again. I'm sorry, but I'm just not really a fan of any of them except for David Cook and Jason Castro. Michael John's is growing on me though. One more thing: I hope KLC bombs and FINALLY goes home on Thursday!

gmcfly Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 07:31 PM EST

I challenge anyone to sing The Darkness, "I Believe in a Thing Called Love."

And along with the Irish suggestion, why not "Zombie" by the Cranberries? "When the violence causes silence, we must be mistaken."

bonnylass Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

To Mike: The Verve's Bittersweet Sympny is inspirational?? Great song, but the lyrics aren't exactly uplifting: "trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to money then you die".

Alyssa Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

Joan -- No problem, I COMPLETELY understand. I think it would be pretty cool if he played the ukelele. But, I doubt it.

Perkle Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

tmz has the list of songs posted. So far this season they have been right every time. Jason Castro singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow should be very interesting. Lord help us though, Carly is doing a Queen song.
Really hope that Michael Johns does well tonight.

Stephanie T. Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

Don't Stop Me Now was sung during an audition. It would be interesting to see how it can be edited.

Becca Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

i'd really like if someone sang queen's "don't stop me now" because i've always found that to be inspirational and it always hypes me up. but i don't know who i'd want to sing that song

Joan Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

Will Jason play the ukele?

mike Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

David Cook- John Mellencamps "pink houses"
Brooke- Joan Osborne "One of Us"

T Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

What's wrong with Flying Without Wings? Slezak, has your Idol source given you tonight's song selection? You know, the same person who leaked it last week??

Joan Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Sorry. I just know some people hate to be spoiled.

Alyssa Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

To Joan -- Actually....I didn't know that. In all honestly, it was just a guess (mainly because I was listening to that earlier).

BH Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

Even though the songs are picked, here is my wish list.

David Cook- In the Name of Love by U2

Micheal Johns- The Change by Garth Brooks

Carly- People Get Ready by Eva Cassidy

I don't care about anyone else.

Mike Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

I changed my mind. Michael Johns should do
The Verve's "Lucky Man" instead.

supermart Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

Ban Whitney Houston's songs (This is for you Syesha). Ban "Amazing Grace" (you know I'm talking to you). Pick any U2's song... but One! Then, we will be fine!

Joan Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

Kristin, ;)

Mike Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

Michael Johns should sing
The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" but he will probally sing U2's "I still haven't found what I am looking for".

daisyj Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

Actually, En Vogue did release a "cleaned up" version of "Free Your Mind," on a soundtrack album for the Barcelona Olympics (don't ask how I know, don't ask how I know...)

My almost-certainly-not-to-be-used suggestions:
Carly: "Side", Travis
Jason: "What a Year for a New Year", Dan Wilson
Michael: "Ali in the Jungle", The Hours
Syesha: "Waterfalls", TLC
Brooke: "Someday We'll Know", New Radicals
David C.: "The Hands that Built America", U2
David A.: "Hell is for Children", Pat Benatar

Cranky Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

Thad, I think you are, sadly, right. Better get my barf bags ready.

garth Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

Perhaps the ever perky David Archulettuce will honor us with a rousing rendition of REM's "Shiny Happy People" followed by the production of a unicorn from his back pocket, the wheeling out of an elderly relative waving bills paid for by Lil' Davie's prize money, and a barrage of homeless ponies leaving little piles of golden sunshine in their wake. Be prepared for a coronation the likes we have yet to see as the producers get more nervous the popular vote is swaying to the seriously talented David Cook.

orville Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

Ooh, some of these suggestions are great. I really hope that they do some of them, because my head may just explode if I hear too much schlock tonight. Or just spin. One of them could make the producers' heads explode by going back to the Beatles' songbook with "Think for Yourself." But please, please!, Nigel, keep the mosh pit from swaying. That would be too schlocky for words.

DAB Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

now who is DC's favorite band?? i know, i know... im having a hard time reading between the lines and i LOVE spoilers.

Thad Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

Archie will sing 'You Raise Me Up' by Josh Groban and I will puke.

Joan Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 01:28 PM EST

Alyssa, that's a spoiler. You know that's what he's singing.

Elizabeth Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

I'd ask WildKAT what 'good lyrics' are, but I'm afraid of the answer. They're just songs and sometimes people are touched by songs whether its what the song reminds them of, or in this case, the circumstances that the song was written under.

Alyssa Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

I think Jason could really do a fantastic job on Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"...you know, the Hawaiian version with the ukelele.

Stephanie T. Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

Syesha could pull off Andre Crouch'es version of Go Tell it on The Mountain but she should have a kick a-s gospel choir to back her up. Because Michael Johns has a great blues voice, I could also see him singing Van Morrison's Love Light. Thanks to all who approved my choice for Carly.

Tuzo Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

I'm totally into Carly doing any Sinead O'Connor song. Maybe if she were to try something a capella she would be able to really connect emotionally with the song (in addition to her great technical vocals). I think if anyone does Learning To Fly, then Simon's head will explode. First blackbirds, then sparrows and now people learning to fly! How "self indulgent". ;) Speaking of song choices, I'm just glad we are (mostly) past all those horrible songs that we were subjected to during the first years. If I hear another whiny version of My Cherie Amour again MY head will explode.

Gotabrain Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

David C--"Heaven let your light shine down" Collective Soul
Carly--"We belong" Pat Benatar--perfecto!

Ben Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 12:20 PM EST

I'd go with an upbeat inspirational number like "Into the Groove" by Madonna -- always makes me inspired to dance and move... and "No Good Advice" by Girls Aloud. A good self-empowering anthem without syrupy crapiness...

To StaleCake Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

Hmmm...jealous of Annie much? Here's hopin' your freshly brewed tea stains your hardwood table, or at the very least, scalds your face.

Ryan Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

Michael, I love your shirt. Is that from Threadless? Anyway...

I'd like Carly to do Dreams, by the Cranberries.

Archuleta can do One, by U2

Brooke: People Get Ready

David C: My Hometown, by Springsteen

Michael: Wonderful, by Everclear

Syesha: Sisters are Doing it for Themselves

Kristy: Fast Car, by Tracy Chapman

Kristin Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

oan Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

Sorry, but you will not get your wish for Jason Castro, David Cook, or David Archuleta. His favorite band has posted DC's song choice on their website. You'll be surprised by Jason's choice. He's got something in common with McPhee. David A.'s is fitting for his "rabid fans." Spoilers if you want to figure it out

Joan, thanks for the spoilers. is this what Jason will be singing? If so, it should be amazing!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Pe5p1BXNCQM

GatorGal Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

Stephanie T. - Great suggestion for Carly. We Belong by Pat Bennetar would be awesome.

Eddie Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

David A. - My Wish-Rascall Flatts

Jason - Faith in You-PM Dawn

David C. - Better Days-Goo Goo Dolls

Kristy Lee - True Colors-Cindy Lauper or Eva Cassidy version

Michael - Walk On-U2

Syesha - I Hope You Dance-Lee Ann Womack

Carly - Bridge Over Troubled Waters-Eva Cassidy arrangement

Brooke - Angel-Sarah MacLachlan

These are my suggestions. A few tweaks could happen. David A could go back to "Waiting On the World To Change" and Jason Castro could go for "When I Get Where I'm Going". Like?

UGH Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

Sorry, forgot to mention that the comment below is for WildKAT.

UGH Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

Vince Gill writes 'STUPID' lyrics? What a STUPID thing to say. If you don't like the country genre, fine. I'm not crazy about it myself but I can at least recognize talent when I see it. Please don't make lame comments like that. You lose all credibility as a critic, which is honestly, what all of us do on these posts.
Oh, and kudos to you on your support of the Thai girl.

Suzanne Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

In honor of BROOKE, the forgotten one, let's pick songs for her.

I pick Carole King's Beautiful because the singers are so busy this week with learning Christian Church songs for IGB that they are picking songs they've sung before in their careers so they don't need to learn something new.

MK Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

OMG, Maria, you just made my day. I think i have that song on cassette somewhere...

Suzanne Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

Joan--I know the other two. But Jason? OtR? or IBICF (which i can't imagine, but it fits the theme and your clue).

Maria Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

I want David A to sing This One's For the Children by NKOTB just for the hilarity.

CJ Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

So what is wrong with inspiration? Guess I am perplexed with the negative attitude Slezak has towards being inspired, oops!! that must be because he does not inspire us mmmmmmmm.Food for thought!
I for one love to be inspired about charity , love , giving . and helping my fellow man. Thank you AI for giving us a chance to GIVE BACK! And bring on your sappy songs that tear at our heart strings!

Buckeye in TX Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

Love, love, love the "Go Rest High on That Mountain" by Vince Gill suggestion for the guys! Also, Jason Castro singing "Miracle", "Times Like These", by The Foo Fighters would be great. Thank goodness for DVR tonight...I have a feeling we will need it!

StaleCake Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

to Stephanie T.: I looooovoe "Don't Dream It's Over" - would prefer to hear Michael Johns sing it. No one will though, it's one of those "cursed title" songs that is just begging to be sung again, ironically, as the contestant is booted. I was about to make some tea and I can't find my tea-cosy anywhere... hey... Annie Baaaarrreeeeettttttt!

Nikki Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

Slezak, I can totally see Archuleta singing "The Greatest Love of All," but I've been convinced that he's going to bust out "Climb Every Mountain." I'm pretty sure he'd do "We Are the World" if he could, too.

b0bbyr0we Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

So sad how much better these suggestions were than what we're sure to hear tonight. I was worried that because of the brilliant DWTS Talk there'd be no Annie Barrett guest appearances on Idolatry this week.

Hooray for being wrong about that. Hooray for the hat!

What ever happened to Annie's Friday Take 5: 5 Things To Do This Weekend? I haven't known what to do any weekend for months and I haven't laughed nearly as hard on Friday mornings.

LoveMuffin Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

Suggestions:

Prayer For The Dying for Michael Johns

A Change Is Gonna Come for David Cook

Stephanie T. Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

Jason- Love is the Answer- England Dan and John Ford Coley, or if he can really hit the high notes, Breathe-Midge Ure

David Cook-Broken Wings-Mr. Mister

Brooke- Don't Dream It's Over- Crowded House or You've got a Friend-Carol King

Kristy-Let Your Love Grow-Bellamy Brothers

Michael-Keep Yourself Alive-Queen

Syesha-Everyone Hurts-REM

Carly-We Belong- Pat Bennetar

David A.- My Sweet Lord-George Harrison

yssys Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

About Kristy Lee Cook I'm with The Soup's Joel Mchale who said that she is gonna sing amazing grace, next week "America the Beautiful and tune in for the big finale when KLC invades Iran"LOL...it's funny because it could be true...

Mister Universe Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

Don't be afraid. You needn't slay the beast nor scale the entire mountain. That's not how it's done. You only need to move through today, D. Cook. Think of the distance you've already covered. Focus on your strengths. Let each new step remind you of your freedom. Let every breath you take remind you of your power. Seek out friends and guides; they're anxious to help. You're not alone. You're understood. This road has been walked before. Dance life's dance, just a few steps at a time, and in the wink of an eye you will wonder to yourself, "What beast, what mountain? Was I having a dream?"

to Dtom Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

The popwatch people updated their incorrect post late Tuesday and admitted they'd been duped. What more do you want?

Dtom Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

Hey guys...when are we going to get the list of songs tonight that is COMPLETELY wrong? That was hilarious last week. I didn't see any acknowledgement of your gaff on the PW blog, you could have made a joke out of it.

American Patriot Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

As we listen to General Petraeus' testimony to Congress this week and mark, on Wednesday, the fifth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad, we should keep in mind the number of young Americans who have sacrificed their lives for America. Any judgment we make about where we are and what we must do in Iraq must be conditioned by the courage and commitment of those who have volunteered to protect us.

Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

we all know how hot michael johns is, how about "hero" the one that inglesias did. "i'll be your hero, baby" can just see it now.

WildKAT Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:18 AM EST

Elizabeth: I agree that Vince Gill's beautiful voice can make a person emotional, but I REALLY wish he would write songs with lyrics that aren't so absolutely STUPID. Vince is a master musician and singer, it's just a real shame he is in that god awful Country music genre instead of on the world stage with better material. Apart from David Cook, Carly Smithson and Michael Johns, I don't care what the other singers perform. I just hope that the charity coverage is more about America tonight. How about the Asian countries that everyone ignores where children are sold into sex slavery? No one talks about that.
I support a little girl in Thailand who otherwise would be sold to human traffickers. Think about that issue!

GatorGal Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

Slezak - If I'm going to watch all 7 minutes of Idolatry each week, you could at least remember to make a recommendation for Brooke, even if she is slipping on your rankings.

Mary S Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

DOING

"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand."

This is not the first time I quote Confucius. His wisdom is undeniable. He compels us here to take action, not just to listen or to watch. If you want to learn new information, make changes in your personality or change something in your life, nothing beats action.

So get off that chair…

May you live all the days of your life

elaine Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:10 AM EST

he is disney on ice!! he has a good voice for broadway...haha...i would almost like him to pick a josh grobin song because then it would be obvious to everyone that he has nowhere near the talent or voice of grobin...and what else is he going to sell?

WildKAT Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

How about something REALLY off the wall for David Cook? Like maybe one of Robert Plant's towering songs such as "Stairway to Heaven"?? The words of that song ought to put things intoperspective. Also, BRING BACK MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE OF ALL SINGERS THE FABULOUS JOSH GROBAN! He can SING!

jones Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

Man in the Mirror is a great suggestion...Little David maybe?
My favorite "inspirational" song is Garth Brooks "The River." Makes me well up each time I hear it.

Mona Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

Just read the percentages on the Power List and seriously, KLC is rated higher than Syeisha? Am I the only one who thinks the girl can sing? 1% for the girl is really weird to me

Joan Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

Sorry, but you will not get your wish for Jason Castro, David Cook, or David Archuleta. His favorite band has posted DC's song choice on their website. You'll be surprised by Jason's choice. He's got something in common with McPhee. David A.'s is fitting for his "rabid fans." Spoilers if you want to figure it out.

Deb in PA Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

Josh Groban wasn't the first to record You Lift Me Up. It was originally recorded by a contemporay Christian group called Selah. As far as chosing for the contestants, there are so many I couldn't even begin to chose.

barbara Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

I really don't understand why you all are on David A's jock about singing the same kind of song. At least he can sing. Jason Castro is the most boring, not able to sing, person I have ever heard. And he keeps such a stupid look on his face all the time because he knows he sounds bad. HE CAN'T SING PEOPLE. The only reason he made it this far is because he is kind of "spooky" cute. David A, boring or not has a beautiful voice. Let's remember you are being awful hard on him, he is a child.

Martin Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

Would love to see the "rockers" do Nazareth's "Broken Down Angel" or "Love Hurts". The country inspired ones (KLC and BW) could try to interpret Martina McBride's "Love's the only house big enough for all the pain in the world" and something coffehouse-style for Mr. Castro could be "Bright side of the road" by Van Morrison. Best to all.

Broadway Baby Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

Though I love Celine Dion for all the wrong reasons I think Carly could do "A New Day Has Come" some justice. Other songs I'd like to see but have little idea of who could do them - Man In the Mirror, Little Bird by Annie Lenox, The World I Know by Collective Soul, White Flag, or Shining Star by Earth Wind & Fire. Hey - what was the closing theme on the Monkees? I think Jason taking on the Foo Fighter's Miracle would get him out of his rut yet he could stay Jasony. What I really want though is David Cook to rearrange Helen Reddy's I Am Woman.

Kathleen Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 09:27 AM EST

Oh, Elaine - I am SO with you. Archuleta has become known as "Disney on Ice" at my house. His choices are all right within a certain context, but to repeat the same style and message and tempo and - for cryin' out loud - intense stare week after week . . . bleh.

whereimgoing Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 09:27 AM EST

I'm not even going to try and play the "what song should they sing" game, because I seem to be pretty bad at it. The only song I think would be really cool if someone covered is Josh Gracin's "I Want To Live". That song was just made for this week, but I don't think it's well-known enough for anyone to pick.

Christian Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

um... that hat is fierce.

coery49 Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:59 AM EST

tonite i just hope no one sings u2's "one". how about josh groban's "you lift me up" know it's corny, but love that song. some one suggested michael sing steve winwood's "higher love". great suggestion.love that song and think that would be great for him. for a group song how about "we are the world" with michael jackson's hologram. if kristy sings "amazing grace" she should be pulled off the stage. brooke reminds me of faith hill she should sing something by her.

Nancy Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

Syesha should sing "Soar" by Christina Aguilera. I can't get this idea out of my mind: David Archuleta singing "Conversations With My 13 Year Old Self" by Pink. Would fit him perfect with his "family" issues, and would entertain me to no end!

corey49 Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:50 AM EST

michael, can i pick a bone with you about your power rankings? you mention how jason needs to show more versatility in his song choices and performances. and this has been a comment by randy, but i don't see any of the other contestants having any versatility and they don't get slammed for it. david cook, who i also like, does the same thing every week. after "hello"(which was amazing) it's all been very predictable. electric guitar, emo arrangement, him growling into the mike.i actually wouldn't mind if he won, but i don't think he's shown any versatility. carly same thing, you just know how she is going to sound when she sings a song, boring to me. jason, definitely has his own style and i think it's great. he has consistently picked songs that are different and you wouldn't expect him to pick and makes them sound original. i agree that his vocals haven't always been stellar but please stop saying he needs to be more versatile. i would buy his cd's and david c. and michael johns.

Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

Thanks for obviously ignoring Brooke.

Gosh saying you're now rooting for Kristy Lee and you don't even mention Brooke.

Wow.

Melissa Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:46 AM EST

Leave Annie alone! The hat's cute, and it takes a lot of personality to pull off that hat look with such panache. Keep rockin' it, Annie!

Melissa Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

Mostly great suggestions, but I disagree with "No More Drama" for David Cook. Huh?!

David Cook = It's My Life, Last Man Standing, Lost Highway, Everybody's Broken, The Last Night, Raise Your Hands, or basically any other Bon Jovi anthem songs.

Brooke = "Love Can Build A Bridge." As far as schlock goes, that's a beautiful song and it's right in her "wheelhouse" (whatever that means).

This one's for Slezak: Carly should do "Holding Out For Hero" by Bonnie Tyler. Huh? Oh yeah, you're lovin' it.

Whatever happens, I desperately hope that no one chooses "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey, because Randy will be insufferable.

Amber Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:40 AM EST

This week is just going to suck, they are all going to pick sappy ballads and we're all going to yearn for Lennon/McCartney week. Annie I love you, but what was up with that hat?

elaine Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

david cook could pry take on u2....he has the voice...i'm kind of dreading tonight's episode because i can't stand to hear another message song from david a...and then hear him praised for a boring, over-the-top presentation that won't hold up in the real world for five minutes...ten bucks he giggles and then tells us what "a great message" the song has...gag me...

RTA Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

If David Cook wants to really create an Idol "moment" he should take on "Love Reign O'er Me" by the Who. He's the only one who could hit those Roger Daltrey notes. I'm just sayin'...

StaleCake Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:23 AM EST

MICHAEL, that homeless woman knows a lot about music! Oh wait, that was ANnie Barrett - zing!
Truly, I would love to see Little David get his "Shop Around" groove back with my all-time fave inspirational song, Jackie Wilson's "Higher and Higher" - that hot chorus, with the backup singers, would just KILL! I'd love to see him do well this week, as it's his "wheelhouse" (I said wheelhouse!) -- and maybe if he does really well this week his dad won't get out the wire hangers....
- It may seem sappy on the surface, but I would love to hear David Cook tackle Jon Secada's "Just Another Day"
- Michael Johns would do an amazing job on the uplifting "Higher Love" from Steve Winwood
- Jason Castro could kill Neil Young's "Heart of Gold"

And I don't really care what the women sing.

Suzanne Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:22 AM EST

Poor Brooke. She's invisible to them now!

I thought those were great suggestions and would be a way better show than we'll get tonight. I SO don't want to hear The Greatest Love of All by anyone. And if David A did it, how ironic would that be? Him being a child himself and all.

Jen Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:15 AM EST

"Eye of the Tiger"- don't care who sings it, I just want to hear it!

Amanda Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 08:04 AM EST

was it just me or were there no suggestions for Brooke in there?

NineDaves Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 07:55 AM EST

actually, after further consideration, i'd like to offer carly smithson the honor of singing "hold on" by wilson phillips, for the following reasons. 1) the song rocks. 2) i think carly could actually sing it really well. 3) that modulation towards the end of the song gives me chills. 5) it's never been sung on idol before. 5) did i mention the song rocks?

NineDaves Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 07:22 AM EST

the thought of little david in an off-the-shoulder sweatshirt will get me through the day. and i'm with you on giving jason castro some songs that may bring the band in a bit more. might i suggest dave matthew's band, "everyday?" that songs is pretty uplifting. and although i'd like to offer more suggestions here for other songs our idols should sing, i can't think of a better choice than "free your mind" for ms. mercado. honestly, a brilliant suggestion. doubt she'll take it though!

Elizabeth Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 07:07 AM EST

I think it would be sacrilegious for anyone to do "No More Drama", and if KLC busts out "Amazing Grace" for the THIRD TIME, she should literally get that hook from the Muppet Show to pull her off stage. I would love if one of the fellas (Michael or David Cook especially) would try "Go Rest High On That Mountain" by Vince Gill. I cry when I hear a lot of Vince's songs, but I'm a blubbering mess 5 seconds into that song. We don't need to revist "I'll Stand By You" since Carrie sang the begeezus out of it last year. Seriously - lets retire some of these songs.
