Gossip Girl: The mean girls win

Apr 22, 2008, 05:11 PM | by Youyoung Lee

Categories: 'Gossip Girl', Mini TV Watch

Gossipgirls_l They’re ba-aack. After witnessing the CW’s juvenile but persuasive “OMFG” Gossip Girl advertisements sheathing Manhattan for the past week, I was ridiculously stoked about the return of the show after its near four-month hiatus. How I missed GG, the scandals, the "duh-duh-duh" music in the background, Kristen Bell's cheeky narration. And last night’s GG didn’t disappoint, doing its randy advertising campaign justice by providing an almost painfully good story arc in what was ultimately the best episode since the series’ pilot.

So let's get down to business. Fresh from what appears to be the longest spring break ever, Serena picks up a self-isolated Blair and dishes out all sorts of gossip to appease the demoted queen’s misery. This being the Upper East Side, typical theatrics include one of their girlfriends making it into Brody Jenner’s phone, natch, S. moving into Chuck’s suite at the Palace, and Kati inexplicably moving to Israel (?!?!), forever splicing the union that was once the minority twins. (In real life, however, actress Nan Zhang only moved two states north to Rhode Island, to study at Brown University.) Does this explain the sudden presence of the newbies on the show? If so, please bring back Kati, who at least looked convincingly threatening, unlike the fresh-faced actress who plays Hazel, and who doesn't look older than 12. Anyway, only after her fall from grace was put into perspective did Blair remove her hideous babushka scarf and the strange blue poncho/tarp. Who actually wears such things when they are disguising themselves? A plastic bag might have achieved the same effect. But then again, this is the same girl that demanded to be helicoptered to JFK, so I suppose it all flows in the same hyperbolic direction.

The basic premise of last night’s episode was the brewing battle between two ferocious Queen Bees — Blair and Jenny — while also setting up the plot line for a special guest character, Georgina Sparks (to be played by Michelle Trachtenberg), who is harassing Serena with lascivious oddities like champagne bottles and porn videos and handcuffs. Unrequited love, or a malevolent hanger-on? I suppose we'll find out. Me, I'm getting tired of all of these allusions to S.'s illustrious past. I think Chuck hit the nail on the head when he said, “And to be quite honest, her Virgin Mary act is getting quite old.” Also? This might have been one of the few episodes where a collective “Poor Chuck” could be heard from the audience. The constant beleaguering by both his father and newfound family members made me forgive even that blue shark-covered cardigan he was wearing at the end of the show, because he just looked so downtrodden and misunderstood.

But back to the feuding Queen Bees. The dueling match between Jenny and Blair played like a rabid UES game of tennis, the way the two swiftly hit, and shrieked, from opposing ends. So let's take a review the scorecard. As the GG herself said so kindly, “The French revolution had cake. The American Revolution had tea. But look when we overthrow Blair Waldorf, well, who said you needed a silver spoon to dole out just desserts.” Yogurt falling onto auburn tresses like bird droppings? Team Jenny, Love-15. Inviting Blair to Butter with no intent of actually showing up? Ace! Love-30. Approaching Rufus with demure charm at his Bedford Gallery to conjure up the perfect surprise birthday party at the Humphrey's homely Williamsburg loft, thereby making a fool of not only your daughter but also your family social status? Double Ace for Blair! 30-30. Sneaking out of your house and playing the “lonely” card with Nate to use him like a pawn to get back at Blair: 40-30 for Miss Humphrey. Having the audacity to sit at the birthday table after having just been caught red-handed stealing a few moments earlier: Match Point! Team Jenny wins!

Well played, ladies! Never have I had so much fun watching a match from the sidelines, all of which brings me to these questions: What kind of dress is worth $50,000? How painfully honest was it for Jenny to have stolen the dress in a desperate attempt to climb the social ranks? What kind of thrift store owner would let Jenny try on the red dress after she knowingly had tried to take it back from her? Who else chuckled when Dan entered his pinked-out loft and said, “Who turned 12?” and “Well he was worried about you, that you were turning into a hideous UES cyborg.” Classic lines, though who else wanted to call Dan’s hypocrisy out for lecturing Jenny while also being obsessed with UES "It girl" Serena? Finally, who else is just a little more than excited to see Chuck turn Eric into a mini-me?

gen Fri, May 9, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

Chuck is a good match with Blair.

Nate shouldn't be with Blair or Jenny.

Serena doens't match Dan at all. Serena should be with either Nate or someone else not Chuck!

I hear Blair makes Georgina leave forever.

lori Sun, Apr 27, 2008 at 09:19 PM EST

liked the episode but Jenny is a thief and should be in trouble for it.

hannah Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

So...is it Chuck that's gay? Isn't someone supposed to be coming out of the closet soon? Was that what his (awful, awful) father was talking about when he was saying don't embarrass the family, etc?? Or maybe it could be Eric? I really love CHuck and Blair together--they're hilarious and have a great spark.

Why oh why am I addicted to this show, I should really be ashamed.

Mops Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

I am also tired of the Virgin Mary at. When does Serena get to show her claws and or at least become a more interesting character.

valentino Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

the valentino bag probably belonged to one of the other girls. like when jenny gave hazel (i think) back the bracelet and thanked her for letting her borrow it (to which hazel replied that she had forgotten about it and wouldn't have asked for it back anyway).

Jennifer Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

LOVED IT!!

Anabelle Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

Did anyone else notice the irony of Little J carrying a $3,500 purple python VALENTINO (!!!) bag in the beginning of the episode (3 times the price of the Dolce dress she wanted), and then not knowing how much a VALENTINO dress costs?

team blair Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 06:48 AM EST

omg i hate jenny!! Blair IS going to take her down so bad! nd i cant believe she used nate!!

monica Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 02:38 PM EST

i'll always love Chuck, but he better not screw up his little protege. I can't wait till Georgina spills the beans. Serena was way too bubbly in this episode. Wouldn't it be cool if Blair and Jenny teamed up to bring Georgina down? I was confused about a few things: 1) why would the thrift store owner leave that really expensive dress hanging at the front of the store or laying on the counter after her argument with Jenny? 2) Why didn't Blair just call Jenny's dad? After all, he did just catch her stealing. 3) Is Nate retarded? He couldn't tell he was being used?

Nate's girl Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

Loved the ep. Simply delicious! Jenny gave a heroic effort but this just one battle and we all know that Blair will win the war. Like Nate said, she has no idea who she is dealing with. I can't wait for Georgina Sparks! She's one of my favorite characters from the books and her presence will jazz up the series even more. And I would hope that Josh S. learned his lesson with horrible Oliver! As for those of you who actually think that who GG is is important, catch a clue, it doesn't. She or HE is simply a window into that world. Obsess all you want but you will probably never learn who it is.

I like Gossip Girl but can we also get a TV Watch or Mini TV watch for How I Met Your Mother???

I am actually really stoked to have Chuck turn Erik into a mini-me clone. Erik is a really underused character. and the more Chuck, the better.

Cory Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 06:42 AM EST

Also, I was sort of sad to see that Kati had left. Of the two minority twins, I liked Kati better. Sigh...well, hopefully Izzie will be less stereotypical and boring now.

Cory Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 06:41 AM EST

I'm so glad this show is back. I love Serena and Blair a lot. I was actually surprised that Jenny got as mean as she did. I felt bad for Blair this entire episode, especially when Jenny threw the yogurt on her and during the scenes at Butter. I hope she gets her revenge on Jenny.

Snarf Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 06:13 AM EST

"What kind of dress is worth $50,000?"

Any one of a kind by the following... Valentino, Tom Ford, Armani, (you get my drift)

Oliver Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 04:17 AM EST

Awesome to see the new episode, who is gossip girl? Frustrating, i hope this series doesnt go down hill like soo many before it. Chuck is a champ!

I was ridiculously excited when i saw that Chuck's suite number was 1812. My favourite year!
Really great episode, so glad GG is back!!

Kevin Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 01:55 AM EST

Color Me Concerned. Josh Schwartz famously torpedoed the O.C. with a mid-season addition (Oliver) and I'm very nervous that it's going to happen again, especially with the teaser's "If I go down, you're going down with me" line that immediately made me think the twist could be something as ridiculous as the murder storyline in "Friday Night Lights".

Oh, and who is playing the new girl? None other than Buffy deadweight Michelle Trachtenberg.

I'm really hoping this doesn't fizzle out as just another flash in the pan guilty pleasure.

nice recap. i can't believe i'm hooked on this show.

Blair Bass Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 11:43 PM EST

LOVED this episode (however NOT the best episode for me personally)!! However I'm always on TEAM BLAIR...JENNY GOING DOWN!!!!

The only thing missing from this episode was CHUCK AND BLAIR INTERACTION! I need my CB (I serioulsy thought the person knocking at the door at the end of the episode was Blair and CB were gonna start making out...sigh...Maybe next week?? :)

CHUCK--)HANDS DOWN the best part of this show. Only he could pull off a shark sweater and I love his interaction with mini chuck (eric).

Nate --) oblivious as usual. He's just seems to be in his own world

Dan --) finally an episode that ONLY had a few scenes with him!!

Serena--) find her annoying in this episode cuz she was messing with my Chuck. I knew chuck didnt' send the gifts!

Can't wait till next week! Finally gonna get some Chuck and Blair interaction

EVERYONE WATCH LIVE AT MONDAYS AT 8PM ON CW!

E loves GG Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

I'm so excited! I loved this episode. I really can't wait to see what happens between Serena and Georgina, and then Jenny and Blair! I also can't wait to see what happens with Eric. He's such a cutie! And I think he'll actually be even cuter gay, it just fits his personality...

Rosie Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

Definitely the best ep since the final, like you said. I loved Jenny's haircut and vulnerable yet evil acts. Poor Blair. And Serena's hair really did look gross! I loved that bit of realism but I wanted to wash it for her at the same time or tell her to wear Blair's scarf. ugh. Hypocritical Dan annoys me but he WAS funny. I too can't wait for Serena to stop being perfect, and I really wish she'd get back with Nate.

ilana Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 09:18 PM EST

I love this episode so so much!
I mean, now I really know how much I was missing gossip girl!!
So glad that's back!
Now, I just can't wait to next week... G v/s S, SO Much better than S v/s B

Charis Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 08:14 PM EST

Also, I do think those were sharks on Chuck's sweater, and I agree with aaa that the hand towel line was hilarious.

Charis Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 08:13 PM EST

Yeah, I thought the dress was 15K too, because Jenny only needed to borrow $8000 from Nate, which would be nowhere near 50K. Anyways, I thought the whole Blair and Jenny feud was going to be over in one episode after the birthday party, but I'm glad I was wrong. When Blair got back to her table and saw Jenny there, I was like "Oh, snap!" Also, I thought Chuck was the one sending Serena the "gifts" right up until she showed up at Chuck's door. I'd have to agree that this was the best episode since the pilot.

Mary Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

I too thought the fish on Chuck's sweater were bass and heard the dress was $15k not $50k.

Rose Tyler Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

Oh no those were sharks on his sweater. Quite fitting really. And did anyone else think that the dress was $15k not $50k? Jenny handled herself pretty well but I think that she is no match for Blair in the long run. I cannot wait to meet Bad Serena. I think all readers of the books have been waiting for that.

aaa Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Best line of the night was when Serena told Chuck she never wanted to share his DNA and he said "Well then you better buy new hand towels". Oh my God, so freaking hilarious I almost fell off the couch! I love Chuck!!

Sarah Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

I'm pretty sure those were bass fish on Chuck's sweater. Get it? Chuck Bass? Bass sweater? Why would they be sharks?
