Anyone else get a good laugh over the new 'Wanted' trailer?

Mar 10, 2008, 09:58 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Film, Movie Trailers, PopWatch Dictionary

The trailer for Angelina Jolie's latest, Wanted (opening June 27), has what I like to affectionately call "The Giggle Factor." You know what I mean — when you're watching a movie or a TV show or an American Idol performance, and something so over-the-top awesome/ridiculous happens that you cannot suppress the urge to bust out laughing.

For me, the Wanted trailer can be broken down into a mathematical equation: That opening sequence with Angelina Jolie's car skidding into/picking up a bewildered James McAvoy + the "bullet rustles Angie's tresses" shot + the artsy slabs of meat = Uncontrollable giggling.

And yes, of course I'm going to go see it! What about you?

I can sum this up in 3 words:

Worst.
Movie.
Ever.

Looks F'ing awful.

mei Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 05:31 AM EST

Hell, NO.
Overdosed on Mr Tu..McAvoy already. Watching a clean-shaven faun make out with a pretty skeleton in a green dress in Atonement was this year's measure of unintended laughter.
(Kinda missed the red woollen scarf.)
Angelina's character makes me think of her not-so-great work in Alexander...
Barf.

CMU Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 11:51 PM EST

Oh I am soooo there. That looks like a deliciously good time. It's not taking itself so seriously. Plus, James McAvoy shirtless AND shooting things? Yum, yum.

soulman Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 10:14 PM EST

woah Steve, that came from left field, eh? What's wrong with MARIAH CAREY? or UGLY BETTY?

Anna Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 09:44 PM EST

Was that Common I saw?

I'll probably wait for the reviews on this. I've been disappointed thus far with every AJ action film I've seen, so I've grow a bit wary.

ary Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

ah, morgan freeman, gravitas personified. this movie should be pure velveeta fun.

Steve Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

SLEZAK would prefer that the movie starred UGLY BETTY with a soundtrack by MARIAH CAREY, then maybe he would consider it a CLASSIC in the making...

Nix Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

It's a glorious trailer, utterly over-the-top and insane. I hold out hope it is both a deliriously baroque action flick and a witty satire of all the Secret Society Movies et al, but hey, I'll turn straight for Angelina. and then switch back for jimmyboy.

Nancy Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

Oooh, I love Mr. Tumnus. Beyond that, this movie looks like a cross between The Matrix and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. I won't pay big bucks at the theater for this, but will probably rent on pay per view.

anon Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

Ever notice how if you don't see a film within a month of its release your interest wanes? It's called hype and this article is part of it.

sarah Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

Ah, but 90% of indie movies are crap too because they're trying so very, very hard to be "important" that they become pretentious. Kind of like people who hate Hollywood films just because they're Hollywood films. I'm not saying they're all good - hell, this one may suck. I haven't seen it. At the end of the day, what makes a film good is whether or not you enjoy it and we all enjoy different things - some people like a small, foreign art film, some people enjoy watching cars blow up. Stop hatin' and just hug it out or something.

Denise Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

Not every movie is going to have Daniel Day Lewis screaming "I drink your milkshake" (and as much as I adore DDL, I felt a distinct need for some cheese with the ham presented in that flick). You don't find "Wanted" appealing, don't go see it. I plan to feast upon it, and "Baby Mama", too.

Michelle Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

Oh, and the lip plumpers link. Nice touch!

Michelle Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

This is 100% pure crud. And so is Jolie. How long will they continue to feed us this crap? Oh and eat something all ready. This is not cute anymore. The Matrix has been done, and when they did it, they did it well. Ugh!!!!

DanOregon Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

Saw "The Bank Job" over the weekend and laughed out loud when another "dark thriller" was previewed. Apparently its called "Midnight Meat Train." As soon as the title was announced, everyone laughed.

Mike Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

Cara-The problem is volume. 90-95% of what comes out of Hollywood every year is crap. They release several movies every week. Most fail for good reason. Think of the millions wasted on the movies released since Christmas. Would there be $10 movie tickets if someone didn't have to pay for Mad Money or the Hottie and the Nottie?

Rose Tyler Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Nat X, Lower Wacker is very creepy! The closing were annoying but the off-chance of seeing any of the cast made it very worth while to me.

Homerox Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 04:23 PM EST

Now now...there's nothing wrong with mindless junk food now and then. After all, I've rented and enjoyed the first 3 seasons of "Charlie's Angels", so there ya go : ) Still, to my eyes this goes beyond being "so bad/ridiculous that it's good again" back to just being bad. But who knows, maybe it'll surprise us and bring moviegoers of all tastes together...

Cara Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

Uh oh, guys. We're embarrassing the human race by declaring our love for un-original/un-imaginative/un-creative action flicks. Guess we'd better boycott the movie.
Come on, Rick and Co. You can't live off meat and potatoes ALL the time. Sometimes, you just need a big bag of Chee-toes.

Homerox Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

Right on, Rick...I'm with you 100%. Saw the preview for this at a showing of "Semi-Pro" (which was a lot better than I would have expected) and immediately thought, "This...is...crap. Ho-hum...Angelin Jolie plays yet another hot/tough woman who's better at EVERYTHING than you, and knows it...yawn". Unless it's a parody, this is the kind of dreck that a better movie like "The Player" would rake over the coals. Yikes!

Benny Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

Love James McCavoy. He's so talented and one of the few newcomers with real talent and charisma that is hard to believe he'll waste his mojo with this (altough hillarious) piece of crap. Love that shirtless moment tough.

Sarah A Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

Ah, it's so odd to hear James McAvoy without that yummy Scottish accent. Regardless, it looks like harmless action fun. :)

Mike Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

Angelina did adopt three members of the crew during the filming. Rick is right about supporting bad action movies because of the actors. The good news is there will be a fourth Bourne movie.

Anne Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

Rick, as silly as the movie looks, there are times when you absolutely need mindnumbing action movies. Especially incredibly unbelievable movies where James McAvoy wears no shirt and Angelina gets to be a unhumanitarian (I do not think that is a word, but go with it) bad *ss.

Jim Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Rick-This is a new and improved James McAvoy. He was fairly skinny in the Last King of Scotland. The boy has been working out. But, I do have the good sense not to pay $10 and sit there for 90 to 120 minutes watching an inane action movie for a minute of McAvoy. That's what the DVD is for.

kristie Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

oh, yes. i had the giggles when I watched the clip. So ridiculous looking it's funny. but i'll more than likely probably go see it. Or at least rent the dvd

rick Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

Seriously?!?! Why would anyone consider going to see this movie?!?! Why did Morgan Freeman agree to make such a tremendous piece of crap?!?! The fact that so many of you commented that you can't wait for this movie to come out is incredibly sad. If you're this excited to throw away $10, give it to me and I'll use it to pay my heating bill. Come on, people, use your heads for something other than a hat rack. The only way you can get Hollywood to stop green-lighting so many un-original/un-imaginative/un-creative movies is if you stop forking over money just to see a guy on screen with his shirt off, especially since you've already seen it. Geez, grow up!

sam Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

my girl and boy crush in the same movie, i'm there.

Silv Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

Angelina - the chick I love to hate - and hate to love. Seriously, tho, I wonder if at the end of the day Brad has manhood issues due to the "tough chick" movies she makes. What's the opposite of "empowering" for a guy?

Jackie Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

Totalllly giggled but only because it looks soo cheesy and SOO SICK!!

So pumped to see James McAvoy as an action-star! But I hope he gets back to period pieces/actual acting soon...

And even though I don't really like Angie, glad to see her back as a tough ass-kicking chick!

Snarf Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

This years "Mr & Mrs Smith"? Save me a seat!

Nat X Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

As much as I can't stand Angelina Jolie, I will probably end up seeing this movie. "Wanted" and "Batman" had action scenes filmed in Chicago last summer, which led to the closing of Lower Wacker for weeks on end (at night, anyway). I depend on Lower Wacker so much, I got lost every time they suckered me with a surprise closing. Lower Wacker is so creepy, it'll look awesome in Batman.

Cara Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

It looks fantastically goofy and slick as hell. I'll be there.
P.S. Cara--there are two of us! Whatever will we do?

sarah Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

I think the correct equation for this trailer is: James McEvoy - shirt + over the top action = awesome.

Doesn't it look like something Michael Bay should have made? It's all shiny and has no real point. I also hope it's "Awesome!" rather than just lame.

Anonymous Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

Gorgeous Angelina, super-likeable James Mc and the always-talented Morgan??? Oh yeah, I am so there!!!

Cara Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

I would watch anything with Ms. Jolie in it, who is also my girl crush. I even rented Beowulf this past weekend even though I'm not big on that kind of flick just to see all 10 mins. of la bella Angelina. My hubby's tongue was on the floor. Love her.

LisaMama Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 12:10 PM EST

It's not like she's known for making good film choices...but James is hot!

BJ Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

Monica is it wrong to say I enjoyed torque right until the last 30 minutes when it got all Matrix on bikes and acid trip.?
Im watching it cause Morgan Freeman rocks as well

To SallyinChicago Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

I don't think the Jolie-Pitt family is exactly living paycheck to paycheck...

Martha Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

The giggle moment for me was at the end, when A.J. fires a bullet that says "Goodbye" on the side. James McAvoy does look pretty hot without a shirt, though.

SH Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

It has that fantastically bad movie vibe to it...like Lara Croft. James McAvoy is in it, my girl-crush Angie is in...my secret fantasy lover (it's his voice) Morgan Freeman is in... Yep, I'll be there!

Valerie Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

Total giggles ! You didn't mention the "bullet on bullet" part, which is kinda hilarious too. I'm definitely going to see it !

Amy Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

YES. I effing love James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie. Only bad part is that I have to wait til June to see it.

Liz Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

Monica- I can lay like that no problem. I guess not everyone can do it. Yeah, the Chuck vibe was kind of weird. I will still go see this cuase I like Angelina's action movies like Gone in 60 Seconds, Lara Croft and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Rose Tyler Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

Listen Morgan Freeman's in it so I'll be there. Angie and James are totally bonus points. Plus I was in Chicago when they filmed it. A good mindless action film with great actors is nice after all the arthouse drama of Oscar season.

yssys Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

Yep...there's some Chuck vibe...

Jamie Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

I have a serious Girl-crush on Angelina, so of course me and my hubby will be going to see it. Hey, it can't be any worse than Lara Croft or Mr. & Mrs. Smith, right? Can't help it, I love to watch her kick a$$ and take names!

mscisluv Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

"Choose...your...destiny." Seriously?

To Sallyinchicago Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

I agree that he's a fantastic actor and he's great in whatever he does, but I just want to hear his accent. He played an American in Penelope (which didn't really make sense because most of the other actors were British and didn't change their accents). There's nothing wrong with wanting to break the American market, but he can play a Scot living in this country.

Alli Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

This movie is going to be ridiculous...I'm not yet sure if it will be ridiculous in a good way or ridiculous in a bad way...

new yorker Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

Oh, I am TOTALLY seeing this movie, and not ashamed to admit it!

maya Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

Oh Noes, Angie doesn't do her own stunts?!

That movie looks hilarious. Can't tell if it's intentional or not.

Sallyinchicago Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

RE: James McAvoy -- he hasn't played any Americans that I know of...he was in the Last King of Scotland and Atonement and some other British films...and what's wrong with playing Americans? He wants to break into the American market where there's more $$$ to be made...he's dreamy...I love him as an actor. He's where Colin should have been.

monica Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

how about the part where she lays back on her knees as the train goes in the tunnel? my legs would've snapped off, so that was amazing to me. i'm dying to see it. i miss bad ass angie.
p.s. bj it's okay if you saw Torque. It's only a problem if you enjoyed it.

Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

Why does James McAvoy keep playing American characters? Come on James, don't hide your amazing Scottish accent!

Catherine Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

I love those over the top movies!! I'm so going to see it!

NineDaves Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

slezak, i call those the church giggles. they most frequently appear at weddings and funerals as well.

bj Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

Come on Im SOOOO watching this. Granted I watched Torque as well

G Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

Did anyone else get a Chuck vibe at the begining of the trailer?

SallyinChicago Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 09:22 AM EST

A little Matrix, hmmmm? Seems to be borrowing a lot from the Matrix movies....I sure hope this a winner for Angie, because the way she's having babies and traveling around the world, she needs the $$$$.....and is she only one working of that duo? I hardly see where Pitt is in anything. She's made like 3 movies in the past year to his one....hmm....who's the wage earner in that relationship?

lyn Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

I watched the trailer without volume. Hilarious.

Warren Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

This is exactly what is wrong with Hollywood. The premise is beyond the pale. "Curve a bullet?" yeah--whatever. If you ask me, going to see this movie you deserve what you get. That is--two hours of your life you will never get back.

Winona Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 09:13 AM EST

I'll only see it for A. James McAvoy and B. the fact that a friend of mine is one of Angelina's stunt doubles in the film.
