Tobias Fünke Alert: The 'Mr. Show' stars reunite

Mrshow_l As if rumors of an Arrested Development movie weren't a thrilling enough prospect, there's more potential comedic brilliance on the horizon: The stars of the 1995-98 HBO comedy series Mr. Show with Bob and David — Bob Odenkirk and David Cross (pictured) — are reuniting for a new TV project. Cross has announced on the pair's joint website (alert: NSFW language) that this May, now that the pilot they wrote has been picked up, the duo will begin shooting their new HBO series. Reportedly, it's titled David's Situation and will be produced in a sitcom format, including "ad breaks" (which they'll write and shoot themselves, presumably with — because otherwise what's the point, right? — their trademark warped humor.) In his post, Cross also says each episode will shoot in front of an audience of about 150, and he emphasizes how excited he and Odenkirk are to work together again, declaring, "it's really strong and important to the health of America."

Who else agrees? Who thinks these two can recapture the magic with their new Situation? I'd love to hear from Mr. Show fans out there in PopWatch land. Tell me the funniest character (or scene) you remember, and I'll tell you one of mine — it's David Cross' jaunty night janitor, who shuffles onto Mr. Show about two and half minutes into this clip, which you can watch after the jump.

Who wants hippie pie?

"Well I'm an old gold tooth and I'll tell you the truth. I live in the mouth of a homey"

"...playing those damned video games you love so much..."

Bob shaking the "crime stick"...

the civil war reenactors vs. the sci-fi nerds vs. the midievel folk...

The story of Everest ! NEVER laughed so much as I did the first time that aired...

tim Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

It's been so long, but I'll always remember the evolution of science I think it was and Bob was a wizard, damn that show was hilarious, i don't remeber if this was a sketch on the show but when david played Ronnie, if it wasn't on the show watch Run Ronnie Run, he's a whitetrash guy and in the beginning he's sleeping in someone house, they wake him up and he says they built the house around him while he was asleep, too F'ing funny

Nancy Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

I don't get HBO, so I've never seen the show. But everytime I see that guy on the right, I think "chicken pot, chicken pot, chicken pot pie". Anyone with me?

Ben Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

The "Jerry Springer-type" talk show on the life raft skit.
"I'm a wild man!"

Don Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

The Altered State of Druggachusetts was the BEST for anyone who remembers that freaky show H.R. Puffenstuff. Also, the taping of the "lost episode" was great. And the East coast/West coast ventriloquists - genius!!!

Eric Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Maybe I'm alone on this one....but The Pre-Taped Call-In show with Ken Doral. 4 minutes of nonsensical frustrating dialogue and then the most perfect reveal ever.

strangewink Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

only one thing to say: TTOMO

Mik T Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

"The Story of the story of Everest" or "The Audition"

Brian Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

lauren Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

the joke: the musical...at the end when bob comes out as the hated milk machine, singing in that high pitched little kid voice...it makes me giggle now just thinking about it

Bob Odenkirk is as funny as a root canal on the day your mother dies, with an IRS audit to look forward to in the afternoon.

Rob Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

I liked the Siamese twins sketch. One was a conservative, one was a liberal. Genius.

Christa Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

Pallies!

zez Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 09:19 AM EST

I'm strong, like THE HULK!

Jim LoBo Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 09:11 AM EST

Monk - "I'm rappin'. I'm rappin'. I'm rappin', rappin', rappin."

Professor Murder - "Damn! His science is too tight."

Dan Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 09:00 AM EST

Van Hammersly!!

dmojo Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 08:49 AM EST

Or wait: what about the band who met the boy in the hospital who took their song "kill yourself" literally and jumped into a vat of acid...after he grossed them out with his shrunken body, they penned "try again".

dmojo Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

The episode when they had the competition with the fat kid camp - and the kid gets lured in by chocolates just to get his throat slit by David!

GG Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

I love the skit about the rock band that had a tape leaked of all the the bandmates partying. Instead of partying with groupies it was all a footage of the bandmates in compromising gay situations with one another. I can't remember the name of the band or the skit but it was hilarious. I need to pull out my Mr. Show DVD's. I also saw Mr. Show live years ago and it was really funny.

Lex Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 08:16 AM EST

Nothing is funnier than Borden Grote, the most dedicated actor in the world.

RE: they announced this to MTV about a week or two ago. Just FYI
What? I don't believe you. How could they find the time to do that in between all the music videos they're playing?
Dogpile on Gwinnett!

Brody Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 01:14 AM EST

I would love to be a part of this!

Kayaboy Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 10:17 PM EST

New San Francisco! It is San Frantastic!

Mel Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 08:58 PM EST

What Mr. Show sketch WASN'T brilliant? The Altered State of Druggachusetts. The Fairsley's ads. Jeepers Creepers. Pit Pat ("I'm Pit Pat, and I love you!") The mom and pop porn star. Ronnie Dobbs: The Musical. I quote something from this show daily.

Syd Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 08:08 PM EST

that's a good call- I love the Shampoo sketch when they go through customs from amsterdam! Awesome that we will see them again on hbo. I also love the "NEVer, EVer, NERver" scene where David Cross is acting like he's offended by the show. Just realized how much I have missed these two, thank you.

Mike Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

Shampoo!

sean Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 05:49 PM EST

coupon the movie! and Fuzz: The Musical

they announced this to MTV about a week or two ago. Just FYI.

justin Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

sad that some britney spears article on this blog might get 25-50 comments, but a mention of the greatest American sketch comedy show ever gets 2 comments. Come on people, get with it.

hbomb Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

The bad news breakers never fails to make me smile, but I think the best is the "pre-taped call-in show." Pure brilliance.
