'Say Yes to the Dress' and other great cable shows we might have missed

Yesdress_l Last weekend, I was flipping channels and stumbled onto TLC's Say Yes to the Dress, an unscripted show that takes you inside NYC's famed Kleinfeld bridal shop. It was a marathon, and even though I'm not at all obsessed with weddings, it totally had its way with me: I wanted to know why consultant Claudia couldn't make a sale. Why some grooms didn't think it was bad luck to help shop for the gown (how common is this?!). And if the bride who'd waited hours to try on a dress she'd admired on another customer would finally get to wear it and love it. I wish I had caught this show — which debuted in October and won't return until this summer — sooner. So this doesn't happen to me again, please share the hidden cable gems that you've found below. My remote thanks you. Maybe others' will, too.

I totally got sucked into the SYTTD marathon, too! I kept thinking, "OK, I'm definitely turning it off after THIS episode." Four hours later....

I love How Clean is your House on BBC America.....after watching the filth that some people live in, I don't feel so bad if I have a pile of magazines on the couch or there a few dust bunnies under my bed

whoopseedaisy Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

Secret Diary of a Call Girl

fantastic, racy British show based on the tell-all by London call girl Belle de Jour. Starring the lucious Billie Piper.

HOT

Sandra Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:57 PM EST

I have to second the comment about the Haunting - totally addictive and very SPOOKY. Also love Clean House and No Reservations (Anthony Bourdain makes me swoon!)

Katya Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:20 PM EST

I love Jon And Kate + 8. I have a season pass for it and I usually refer to it throughout the week (this week I kept talking about people breathing loudly after Kate said Jon was doing that).

melinda Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:38 PM EST

MANDI! HOLY COW! I have a TV boyfriend and his name is Mike Rowe(from Dirty Jobs). Even though he's a good 15 years older than me, I would go gaga over him if I saw him in person. I love his deadpan humor. (His camera guys are cute too!) Jon & Kate plus 8 (love the kids), The First 48, Intervention (so happy when they get clean), AND Barefoot Contessa. Say Yes to the Dress-horrible sales women--catty, b*tchy, and WAY too much pancake makeup and horrible accents. Ugh. And, who wears see-through wedding dresses?! And lasty, This Old House! I could watch it 24/7.

abp Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

The First 48 by a mile. Watch one complete episode and you *will* get hooked, I promise!

Mcbutterpants Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

A few of my faves are:

Ghosthunters and Destination Truth on SciFi
Redneck Weddings on CMT
Torchwood on BBC
Dirty Jobs on Discovery
Intervention on A&E
Unwrapped on FOOD

I love my DVR otherwise I would never be able to see all these shows.

allyson Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

Ace of Cakes and Diners, Drive-ins and Dives (Food Network); What Not to Wear (TLC). I watched a John&Kate + 8 marathon on a cross-country flight early this year and got hooked. I seem to forget when it's on a lot of the time though.

Tas Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

I love "Little People, Big World" on TLC. I think it's probably more well known than some shows listed on here, but I am addicted. Monday nights episode where Matt Roloff was in court for a possible DUI conviction was great!

sari Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 05:18 PM EST

the one thing that bothers me about that "Say Yes to the Dress" show is that the girls always choose the WORST dresses. Seriously, my sister and I were watching it on Friday and we couldn't believe the unflattering dresses the employees let the girls walk away with. AND all the dresses at Kleinfeld are SUPER expensive so I mean...it's really just very stupid.

Snooks Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

I'm a huge Jon & Kate fan. TLC Monday nights! Why is everyone giving Kate such a hard time...8 children people...8! I would understand if they were all different ages but the are 3 and 7. So, I make my boyfriend sit through J&K+8 and he makes me sit through Fight Quest on Discovery. (I think he secretly enjoys Jon & Kate...the kids are funny)

mandi (not bierly) Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

another vote here for jon and kate plus 8. those kids are beyond adorable! and people are too hard on kate. she's sometimes unreasonable (but who isn't?).

Snarf Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

"Yes" to the dress but "No" to the show!

LisaMama Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

My kids and husband are obsessed with MythBusters, and their recent James Bond and MacGyver specials were pretty good.

By the way, my husband went dress shopping with me because we had just moved and didn't know anyone yet, my mom and sister were 2,000 miles away, and a place in the city was having their annual clearance sale (hello, $300 wedding dress!). My soon-to-be husband was the only friend I had to come with me, because after all, it was a great sale!

Sonia Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

I have become addicted to the Tudors on Showtime! It is so good...although the first episode is meh the rest are addictive. Also Blood Ties on Lifetime...some cheesy dialogue but really good overall.

evie Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

"Intervention" is awesome--always makes me feel better about myself. I really enjoyed "America's Psychic Challenge" on Lifetime...but have never seen Jon & Kate Plus 8!! What channel is THAT on?

Charlotte Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

Pretty much anything on HGTV! Its so addictive!

Plus, I love Food Network shows, especially "Food Network Challenge."

I also love 10 Years Younger on TLC.

Sharlin Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

no reservations is also awesome.

avabelles mom Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

I am a reality show ADDICT, but i just found Say yes to the dress saturday too, my boyfriend was none too happy. I watch almost every show mentioned here, its a wonder i have time to write this comment.

emily Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

I've loved this show for a long time, but another show that gets NO credit but is fantastic is PYSCH on USA. It's on break now, but they replay old episodes at midnight on weekends. It is absolutely hilarious and you can watch old episodes online too. I wish they'd put it on primetime TV!

Jelana Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

Oh, and I forgot My First Home on TLC, which I love, probably because I just bought my first home.

Jelana Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

For all the Parking Wars fans out there: true, the film the worst Philly residents dealing badly with competent Philadelphia Parking Authority salt of the earth types. I live in Philly; this is not how it ordinarily works. The PPA generally is unbelievably horrible, constantly issuing bad tickets, towing and booting cars on incorrect information, posting incomprehensible signs, and then putting you through months/years of administrative hell to fix their mistakes. Every single person I know has had some kind of hassle with them in which the PPA was clearly wrong. The show, while entertaining, is fiction. Oh, and I do really like Jon & Kate + 8. Is Cash Cab still on?

vw Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

I LOVE Jon & Kate + 8 and while Kate can be abrasive I know I don't have to live with her thank God! She cracks me up!I also like Curb Appeal,Real Housewives( & these new ones-wow!),Millionaire Matchmaker, and I liked Cash In The Attic but don't see it on any more which leads me to Rescue Mediums( what happened WE TV?)Those ladies were hilarious.Along that vein I also am addicted to Ghost Hunters and Paranormal State. On the Travel Channel it's Andrew Zimmerman(disgusting & facinating @ the same time)and ANYTHING with Samantha Brown. I LOVE HER!

amah Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

No one's mentioned "A Haunting" on Discovery Channel? No one likes to get the poop scared out of them?! I am horribly addicted to this show and it has caused soooo many nightmares. It's way creepier than most horror/ spooky movies out there, too!

Stef Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

Top Gear and Torchwood on BBCA. Brilliant!

Shay Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

I am all about Anthony Bourdain No Reservations. He's not afraid to say something tastes like trash, he's always ready for a cocktail and he smokes like a chimney. It's how I vacation too. He's my peeps.

jcarla Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

I forgot Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations. And I loved Monday's episode where he pulled a double shift at Les Halles.

Sarah Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

"Split Ends" on Style!!

Great television - 2 hairdressers (usually the antheisis of each other) swap places for 3 days. Great lighthearted drama, and the hair challenges are always a hoot. And it's always adorable when one the the hairdressers makes a difference in their switched salon!

Solsbury Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

Unbeatable Banzuke on G4. It's on every night.

Angie Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

I'm addicted to Bad Girls Club. Its totally trash-tastic.

Joanster Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

I also got sucked into Say Yes to the Dress this weekend, and found it bizarrely compelling. Other cable addictions: My House is Worth What and House Hunters on HGTV. And my favorite has got to be Anthony Bourdain No Reservations on the Travel Channel.

Shirley Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

Food Network-Good Eats, Cook's Tour, Iron Chef America & Diners, Drive-ins & Dives, Restaurant Makeover & Feasting On Asphalt
Travel Channel-Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations
TNT-The Closer
TLC-What Not to Wear, Say Yes To The Dress, & Flip That Restaurant.
Style-Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?, Clean House & Dr 90210.
A&E-American Justice, Family Jewels, Dog The Bounty Hunter (bring the Dog back!!) & Flip That House

Jennifer Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

Top Gear on BBC America is funny! Even if you're not into cars (although it does help) they do some pretty cool/funny stunts. Like when they (there are 3 guys) came to America and each bought the best used car they could for like $100, then tried driving them across the country to see how long they'd last. Or when they each took a vehicle and turned it into an amphibious car, then tried crossing the British Channel to reach France in them. Crazy British, "Monty Python" esq, humor...gotta love it.

Ms Daisy Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

Another one: "Meerkat Manor" on Animal Planet. Although after the heartbreaking death of Flower last season, I'm not sure I can stand to watch anymore.

aaa Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

I used to absolutely love What Not to Wear, would not miss a single episode, but they've totally ruined it this season. Why did they mess with the format??

Ms Daisy Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

"Intervention" on A&E is, pardon the pun, very addictive.

cimagato Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

I'm on the John & Kate + 8 train, too. You can watch it with the kids in the room. I agree with Ace of Cakes as well. The kids think Duff is The Man. Celebrity Rehab just ended, but I found it to be much better than I thought it would be--compelling, even. And even though this is on network TV, and I promised myself I'd never watch it, I'm completely hooked by Biggest Loser. Oh, the places I'll go when the reruns come out...

Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

Dogs with Jobs on National Geographic Channel - watch it if you want a solid 30 minutes of aaawwwww.
Also, Intervention on A&E and Big Medicine on TLC

EMF Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

Jon & Kate plus 8. I adore Aaden, the professor. I also like Ace of Cakes. Hair Trauma is great, too.

tamuchi Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

So glad to see a column about Say Yes To The Dress. I stumbled upon it a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. I'm not a fan of Claudia, who cannot admit any error on her part. Do we discover Claudia's fate this season?
Pretty much anything on Food Network is a gem (love Bobby Flay!).
Modern Marvels on the History Channel is a good, interesting watch but it's been on like forever, so I don't think it's undiscovered.
Oh, and Top Gear on BBC America is another fave.

Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

How It's Made sucks me in everytime

Rose Tyler Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

Ace of Cakes! Geoff on that show is so very funny.

Laura Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

I've recently gotten sucked into Jon and Kate plus 8. I don't know if it's fair to say Kate is a fan of plastic surgery--she had a tummy tuck because (shocker) when you give birth to 6 babies at once, you get saggy skin. Anyway, I also love Moving Up on TLC and The Millionaire Matchmaker on Bravo (just finished its season, but there are marathons).

Sharlin Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

Cash Cab is awesome on Discovery.

I love say yes to the dress and I think the manegament was really hard on Claudia. If she only gets 1st time wedding dress shoppers, most of the time, they won't buy the dress!! Unfair for Claudia.

Darlene Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

My sister watches Jon & Kate Plus 8. I used to watch it with her before I became absolutely disgusted and horrified with Kate. Can you imagine having to live with such an overbearing, demanding, OCD woman?! She cleans her kitchen floor 3 times a day and complains she's tired?! She treats her poor husband like a slave, but I blame him too for staying and allowing her to degrade him on national tv.

pj Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

I like Say Yes to the Dress as well-I'm always fascinated w/ how people make decisions & are willing to spend ridiculous amnts of $. As Dr. Phil says, if you spent even a fraction of that amount of time and energy on your relationship as you do on wedding planning, people would be a lot better off! Also, I realize Kleinfeld's is a business, but I totally disagree w/ their philosophy of not letting the girls see the dresses (have the consultants pick them) - you don't know what you want or like until you see it! and that they want to rush you to make a decision to make a sale. I tried on numerous dresses many times in many stores (about 13) until I made my decision - and it was not because I was indecisive, I just wanted to know what was out there - & trying on wedding gowns is not something you get to do every day - so their comments about their customers just wanting to play dress up/Cinderella really annoy me! Let them! Most of them will only get to do that once in their life!

jcarla Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

OK I stand by any more:
Good Eats and Ace of Cakes on Food Network: Laughter and you learn something.
How it works: 7pm EST on Discovery Channel. Found it during the strike and I can't stop watching.
Jon & Kate plus Eight: Like EW said a few weeks ago: such cute birth control ads.

Jessica Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

I saw this show too and it sucked me in also! I had never heard of it before! But the weekend before that I stumbled upon "my first place" or "my first home" one of those two on TLC...and suddenly I was thinking about buying a home and what I wanted! It was crazy!

Ames Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

I like Paranormal State on A&E. Not so much for the scares, b/c there aren't any really, but the interesting back stories. But as a consequence I am now afraid of 3am -- dead time. The devil has an entry into our world and no one thought to tell me this?

sari Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

Well "Throwdown With Bobby Flay" on the food channel is the most addicting show EVER (there's a mini marathon on Saturday).

And I agree with everyone about "Ace of Cakes" though I mostly watch it because that guy Geof on it is so friggen fraggen pretty. Ah I can't take it.

Then I've gotta say "Cash Cab" on Discovery Channel. It's probably the best game show ever.

AND "Dirty Jobs" on Discovery.

I know everyone already knows about these shows but I like em a lot and want to give them love.

Sara Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

Oh, gosh. How could I forget "How It's Made", on the Science Channel? Absolutely fascinating. Every episode, they show how four different products are made. They usually run blocks of reruns on Discovery late on the weekends. I hardly ever pay strict attention to the TV, but I'm rapt every time that's on.

What Not To Wear Rules! Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

I too could care less about weddings but get roped into "Rich Bride, Poor Bride". "Platinum Weddings", and the WORST, "Bridezillas". But they usually leave me with an empty feeling.

Sully Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

I think these are on the Discovery channel-my boyfriend loves Dirty Jobs and Deadliest Catch. Also Modern Marvels.

LOVE HGTV and Food Network Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

Could watch those channels 24/7. And you're actually learning.

Molly Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

Ace of Cakes on Food Network is, as everyone is saying, great and hilarious.

Also, Cash Cab on Discovery Channel is fascinatingly addicting.

On the non-reality side, I love the under-appreciated "My Boys" on TBS. It's hilarious and so observant about little things and typical situations.

JillS Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

Jon & Kate Plus 8. I love to hate the mom. She's lazy, egotistical, fan of plastic surgery, uses the word "organic" every chance she gets, has others fold her laundry, complains of all the breaks she needs and barks orders at her hubby (always in public). I'm waiting for the episode where he leaves!!!

Elizabeth to Sina Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

Sina - when you see Sgt. Mason, tell her she's my hero! I love her. (The guys are OK too)

Katy Jo Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

this is very good: "INTERVENTION" --i think that is on A&E

Danielle Lee Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

I too never heard of this show until I was sick this weekend and needed something to watch. I TIVOed the whole marathon and loved it! I could not get enough of it. I too could care less about weddings, but this captured me. I think Claudia wont be quiet and has a huge ego and makes her clients feel pressured. That is why she wont sell. She is in it for herself and all the others make the bride feel like they are the reason they work there.

Tas Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

I have a special interest in Say Yes to the Dress, because I sold wedding dresses for about 5 years. No, it wasn't at Kleinfelds, but it's all the same in the bridal world. The drama, the M.O.B.s(mothers of the bride, who I swear are more picky and emotional than the brides themselves)! I love that show!!! I am also hooked on HGTV and like Ceballos, love House Hunters, and MY HOUSE IS WORTH WHAT? I started dreaming about remodeling and redecorating houses I was watching so much!!

Verity Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 09:36 AM EST

Thank you Kim!! I too don't understand why everyone loves that Pnina dress. It hasn't looked flattering on a single bride who's worn it. And that one woman's father was incredibly creepy the way he kept pointing out how sexy it was on her. *shudders*

Verity Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

I have no idea why but I love "Say Yes to the Dress." And I too got sucked into the marathon this weekend. Another new show I love is "Escape to Chimp Eden" on Animal Planet. Those chimps are fantastic and the lengths that sanctuary goes to just to rescue them is amazing. I also love TLC's "What Not To Wear" and "Jon & Kate Plus 8," (and will never have children as a result!) as well as Discovery's "It Takes a Thief."

becks Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

I agree with Sara- Parking Wars is addictive!! It caught me again last night for a full hour!!

Kim Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

Oh I love Say Yes to the Dress - even though I had already seen it before, I watched the marathon. I am always amazed that all the women love that tacky Pnina dress with the see through corset - bad news! First 48 is fabulous and I have been enjoying the new carson kressley show on lifetime..

Shannon Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 09:09 AM EST

I got sucked into that show, too! The other one I've been sucked into recently is Breaking Bad (on TNT I think)- a VERY dark show in contrast with the light reality of wedding dress shopping.

Ceballos Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

My girlfriend is into HGTV big time, and, as a result, I've come to appreciate "House Hunters", "My House is Worth What?!" and "Property Virgins" (which is especially fun since we're getting our own first place together soon).

We also saw a few "Say Yes to the Dress" episodes about a month ago and were instantly hooked. I also enjoy Style's "How Do I Look?"

Vicky Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

Oh my god! The same thing happened to me this weekend. Nothing else was on and I figured Say Yes to the Dress wouldn't be so bad. I watched it for 2 hours. My b/f was ready to rip his eyes out (even though you can tell he liked to comment on some of the ugly dresses).

MrKitty Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:52 AM EST

My favorite episode involved a mother who SWORE the fabric was dress different from what she ordered. The mother was furious and demanded a new dress (which was impossible due to time). It took the unflappable Nitsa to figure it all out...something as simple as fabric cut across the grain and how it looked in a different light. It was nice to see Mom admit she was sooooo wrong.

Suz Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

Clean House on the Style channel!! I love Niecy Nash soooo much. She's hilarious and surprisingly wise.

La La Love You Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

Ditto on "Say Yes To The Dress" and "Jon and Kate Plus 8". I also give two thumbs up to "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives", "Ice Road Truckers" and "House Hunters".

Patty Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:21 AM EST

Room Service and Design Inc on Fine Living. The love the designer - Sarah Richardson - she is a real interior designer, the show isn't a contest and the people getting their house redone aren't the stars. Best part there are boatloads of episodes.

new yorker Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:18 AM EST

TLC, A&E and the Food Network do have some of the best shows on TV. I love Iron Chef, Ace of Cakes, and Throw Down with Bobby Flay. The first 48 is another gem that many haven't discovered yet. And Jon and Kate plus 8, although sometimes Kate annoys me, but I guess it I had to deal with 8 kids I wouldn't be happy go lucky all the time either. And yet people complain that cable TV has nothing but violence. I beg to differ.

marilinda Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:12 AM EST

how could we talk about "say yes to the dress" and not talk about that way too involved dad. and his daughters dress was wrong, and he just flipping out and kept touching her. i was grossed out just by watching. bleh!

Sara Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:06 AM EST

There aren't enough of the "Say Yes to the Dress" episodes, I've seen them all by now. I like "Parking Wars" on A&E, though. Some of those customers are ridiculous. "I didn't pay my registration, so my license plate got suspended, so they towed my car, and now I have to pay for the registration and the plate and the court fees and the towing fees! Philly, you're screwing people! Philly sucks! This is all Philly's fault, not mine!" Uh... pay your registration next time, then?

Anna Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:02 AM EST

yay! someone else loves jon and kate plus 8 too! its one of my favorites. i also love good eats, ultimate recipe showdown, iron chef (all on food network), cash in the attic (bbc america), and degrassi (the n)

Sina Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 07:57 AM EST

Another First 48 fan!! I LOVE Sgt Caroline Mason. I'm going to Memphis for my family reunion and I'm hoping to get an autograph

cookiemac Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 07:49 AM EST

Oh, and don't even get me started on Food Network (Ace of Cakes, Everyday Italian, Nigella Lawson etc)

cookiemac Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 07:48 AM EST

My wife and I have been know to just watch TLC for hours on end on Sat or Sun without even realizing. Flip this House, Take Home Handyman, Home Made Simple, While You Were Out,Trading Spaces (great that Paige is back)etc. They suck you in

Maggie Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 07:48 AM EST

LA Ink is fabulous as well as What Not to Wear and Ace of Cakes on Food Network

jes Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 07:40 AM EST

Jon & Kate Plus Eight on TLC. What an aMAAAzing family!

Elizabeth Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 07:20 AM EST

I am a "The First 48" on A&E Addict. Its so bad that I think the Memphis Homicide Dept. is my favorite "cast" on television of all time.
