I'm sure this cheeky little publicity stunt has nothing to do with the fact that REM's latest album, Accelerate, drops April 1 (and will be streaming for the next week at iLike.com). So let's just congratulate Stipe's bandmates Peter Buck and Mike Mills on their courageous declarations of heterosexuality.

Mike Mills and Peter Buck are married and straight. This is old news. And Michael Stipe is gay. There was an episode of the music documentary "Behind the Music" about REM in which Stipe joked about his sexuality. He said that in most of the videos he has been known to wear eyeliner. That could have also meant that he was Bi like Little Richard but I doubt it.

Well, I, for one, am shocked. I would never have believed that Mike Mills, of all people, was one of those "straights." He just doesn't seem the type.

That was awesome. I've always thought it was a silly practice for gay people to have to 'come out' by making some grand announcement to the world. Straight people don't have to do it...they just walk around with a memeber of the opposite sex on their arm. This should be a sufficient way for gay people to show their intentions as well. Kudos to Michael Stipe for poking fun at this!
