On The Scene: 'Project Runway' finale party

Runwaygrouppose_l So let's get straight to business, people. The Project Runway finale party was held Wednesday night at the swanky Tribeca Grand Hotel. Though I might add that event itself wasn't all that, well, swanky (maybe that's because after two hours on the red carpet I was starving, and all I could scrounge up before the episode aired was a teeny lamb chop!).

The media was gathered in a lounge-type area on the hotel's basement floor for the red carpet arrivals, and afterward we were shuffled into a large screening room to watch the finale. All three judges were unfortunately MIA from the party, so I can't give you any deets on Heidi's hair, Michael's attitude, or Nina's outfit — but I can tell you all about Tim Gunn and the season four cast. Plus, a few oldie but goodie past Project Runway-ers showed up, like Kara Janx, Alison Kelly, and Kayne Gillaspie.

  • The first finalist to arrive at the event was none other than Christian looking — dare I say it? — fierce... and very, very tiny. Seriously, Christian is so small, I think he could fit in my pocket. (How funny would that be to carry around a little Christian all day? I could definitely use the fashion advice and the constant pick-me-ups, like, "You look fabulous!")
  • Because the red carpet took place before the finale aired, it was supposed to a secret as to who the  winner was — only Christian was suspiciously toting his model, Lisa, along the carpet, in a dress he had designed only days ago. If that didn't scream, "I'M THE WINNER" than I don't know what would.
  • Chris March, who was adorned in leopard as usual, was as sweet as he appears on TV. He told me he does not regret his decision to use human hair in his final collection.
  • As you can see from the video below, Tim Gunn was almost more excited to be at the finale party than the cast members were. But I guess that's expected of the Gunn, who is always chipper and eager to shell out advice. (My prediction that Christian was the winner was again cemented by the huge hug Tim exchanged with the little guy.)
  • I was excited to meet Kathleen “Sweet P” Vaughn because not only am I a fan of her's, I'm also a fan of her collection. (In case you didn't already know, it was actually shown at Bryant Park as a decoy to throw the audience off as to who the three finalists were.) She told me she was rooting for Jillian because she now considers Jillian as a member of her family. [Insert "awww" here.]
  • There were a few random celeb sightings (like Queer Eye For The Straight Guy's food and wine guru Ted Allen) before Rami showed up. As much as I was sure Christian was the winner by this point, I still couldn't help but secretly wish it was Rami. He's just so put together and well spoken (and I adore all of the gowns in his collection so much!). I asked him what his favorite challenge was and surprisingly his answer was one unrelated to draping: the Hershey's candy challenge. "Not because I won," he said, laughing, but because of the creativity that it brought out of him.
  • Season 1 winner Jay McCarroll was a total treat on carpet as he was in a somewhat (typically?) crass mood. When I asked him what he thought about this season's challenges, he said he thought they were getting so ridiculous, he wouldn't be surprised if Heidi asked the designers to make something out of diarrhea — his words, not mine! Nonetheless, it was nice of him to show up and support the finalists.
  • What felt like hours after the event had started, Jillian finally arrived. I asked her about the chic dress she was wearing (one of designs that she just had "lying around in her closet") and her experience on the show. But I'd have to say the most important thing I learned about her is, man, is she a talker! I think she could go on and on about something as boring as butter if you asked her to. Literally.
  • After eating the aforementioned lamb chop, it was finally time to watch the show. I found the last empty seat in the theater — in the back row, right behind a slew of season 4 contestants (though Christian, Jillian, and Rami were all sitting in the front next to Tim). I thought, oh this will be cool to hear their comments throughout the screening of the finale. I should've known better. Between Jack screaming "WORK!" every five minutes, Victorya snickering every time Jack said "work," and Carmen yelling for Christian, it got a little out of hand (I'm just going to go ahead and blame that on the open bar). I did, however, laugh when they all said things during the commercial breaks like "I hope Rami wins," when it was quite obvious they all knew who the real winner was.
  • Which brings me to... Christian. After the show was over, he posed for a massive amount of photos, and then headed back to the red carpet to do another round of interviews. Of course, this time the smile on his face was huge — especially when he was holding that giant check. I asked him if he was going to design a dress for Victoria Beckham (since she did say on the show that she would be happy to wear anything he would make for her) and you might be happy to know that he is in the process of doing so. I can only imagine what kind of concoction it will turn out to be.

After a long night of schmoozing with these budding designers, I was happy to go home and get some sleep. So P-Dubs, tell me, were you happy with the finale episode and the winner? And who would you want to design an outfit for you?

Dear Gile, you are a moron. Not only was your comment prejudiced and anti-semitic, but on top of it, you ignorant fool, it was ill-evidenced. If you watched the show at all, Tim went to Jillian's house where her family celebrated CHRISTMAS. You know, that thing CHRISTIANS generally celebrate. AND, if her "daddy" was Jewish, that means her mamma must not be for them to participate in celebrating the birth of christ. In the Jewish religion a Jewish mother is generally accepted as the determining factor in labeling "Jewish."

Dear, Gile, look in the mirror and hate yourself as much as you hate other people. I'm sure you are extremely ugly and a vile human being.

Love,
Shelby

I am happy Christina won, but Rami was my favorite. Jillian had a good collection as well.

dlee Sun, Mar 9, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

P.S I THOUGHT THIS WAS ABOUT DESIGN NOT ANY NATIONALITY OR RELIGION .!!!!!! PREJIDICE HAS NO PLACE HERE!!!!

dlee Sun, Mar 9, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

i really was sick at the results . maybe christian is a good designer for the extremely rich and wild. Rami is going to go alot farther his designs appeal to everyone on every level from the extreme to the everyday person. (christian's attitude is enough to just make you sick then add his collection of the dark extreme.

debrarae Sun, Mar 9, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

I think if anyone one DESERVED the win it was Jillian. Her collection were the most wearable, and most COHESIVE of the lot.

Gile Arkinon Sun, Mar 9, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

Christian and Rami certainly deserved to be there. And I DO think that Christian did pull it out, just shade better than Rami, however.... I think Rami will be a bigger designer in the long run. Jillian will probably be big on Rodeo Drive for little bit and perhaps even hawk a line at Wal-Mart , but she will eventually settle down into being what she was born to be....a rich Jewish housewife.

chibs Sun, Mar 9, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

Christian deserved it. i mean come on.. Rami copied some of his look! over size puffy sleeved jacket? and the cut of his pants is very reminiscent of Christian's last challenge. Puffy on the thighs and skinny on the bottom. coincidence? I think not.

Gile Arkinon Sun, Mar 9, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

How did Jillian make the finals???
She's Jewish...her daddy is Jewish...she works in the industry for a Jew with alot of pull...did I mention she's Jewish??
Really...this chick is a typical no-talent Jew with connections.

Christian seemed to be master of sewing quickly an he is entertaining and talented; but if you think about his collection on the runway, all of his pieces fall under one of three descriptive words: black/tan; massive ruffles; poofy shoulders. ...You wouldn't have been able to peg the other's collectons that way. The judges gave Chris such a hard time for making a second dress with big collar and Rami such hard time for draping; but they really allowed Christian to be pretty repetitive with continued praises.
Also, I thought Rami was very gracious and seemed genuinely happy for Christian... but then it always seemed to me that he was there more for the publicity (fairly so) for his already-existing business and to show his designs to a wider audience - as opposed to focusing on whether he won or not.

anda Sun, Mar 9, 2008 at 03:17 AM EST

Christian won only because of entertainment value. With his catch phrases and overly styled hair he just made more interesting television. His line was boring and predictable. Really rather tasteless. I think if they had a different guest judge that he would not have won. But really they had their story line and outcome planned from challenge one and the producers bought in Victoria because she will wear outrageous "tranny" and so would vote for him.

Rami was amazing. His attention to fit and detail was both innovative and flattering. I don't think we have seen his prime yet. He will surpass this and surprise us all. He is committed, patient, compassionate and this adds strength to his art form. He is a credit to designers. Cheers to the true winner.

I thought Christian's collection was cliche

joyjoy Sun, Mar 9, 2008 at 12:47 AM EST

Christian is very entertaining.

But it is Rami I will follow forever. I must have something he designed just for me.

JP Sat, Mar 8, 2008 at 11:45 PM EST

Observations from a straight guy: My wife got me into this show so we could spend more time together. I really have grown to like the show and I was rooting for Rami at the end but knew Christian would win. I can see why he won. Rami is already successful and he's a safe bet. His potential is already being realized. He is in his prime and may be for several years to come. Christian, however, is only 21 and is a totally unknown quantity, other than being a kid with MASSIVE talent. Did you see his apartment? It was the size of a thimble. While Rami is a current master of the art form, Christian is at master level and he's just beginning. He's like the Mozart of fashion. You would not give the award to someone already in their prime, and let a potential Mozart fall by the wayside. I completely see why they gave it to Christian. I do not envy the judges their job of deciding between so many AWESOME talents. Jillian rocks. Sweet P and Chris friggin rock too. Peace.

Madge Sat, Mar 8, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

I am sooo happy Christian won. Rami's collection was very polished, but I think Jillian should have been the runner up. Her collection was so fresh!!

Boring, get over yourself.

jaime Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

HE IS SO FIERCE. . . .I LOVE HIM. OF ALL THE WINNERS I THINK HE WILL BE THE ONE EVERYONE REMEMEBERS AND WILL BE HEARD FROM 5yrs FROM NOW!

Ms Daisy Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

Well, I'm sick of people who don't think other people are allowed to express an opinion that doesn't agree with yours. Get over yourself already.

sarah Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

There is no doubt Christian should have won. I am sick of people complaining he doesn't make clothes for real people. HELLO, he did the avant garde challenge and then created a commercial outfit from it. He can totally create sellable stuff.

Christian is real, unique fashion and I hope he doesn't fade away like the other Proj Run winners.

Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

i will say this: i love how bravo had the whole bravo family there at bryant park. it's like, "who do the "work out" people think should win? i'm shocked the real housewives of orange county weren't there!

Jenners Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

I love Christian, I love his collection, and I love the fierceness of it all. Of course he deserved to win, he was totally avant garde and could have been doing a couture show in Paris.
Rami's collection was so blah and Rainbow Brite stewardessy, but his gowns were fabulous. Jillian's collection was cute and had some great pieces but there were several that just threw off the whole collection (ugly cut-out sweater, pointy shoulder blazer, and tacky gold minidress).
Christian's was the most composed of the collections and his first look and last two looks were to die for. I do wish he would have taken out one skinny pant look and done something else, but each look was still unique in its own right. If I were ever to go to the Costume Institute Ball or some other fabulous event, I would definitely want Christian to design for me.
