Do you care who the celebs endorse?

Mar 4, 2008, 03:11 PM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: Current Affairs, To Care or Not to Care, Trend Watch, Viral Video!!!

Given that today could be the last primary day before the Democratic presidential nomination is decided, we thought we'd ask. There's a tiresomely lengthy list of popular figures who've recently endorsed their preferred candidate -- but perhaps the strangest is Jack Nicholson's viral campaign video for Hillary Clinton, in which some of the actor's most delinquent characters are made to seem pro-Clinton by uttering classic, politically relevant lines like "Hubba hubba hubba, money money money":

Yeah. It's weird. Jack explains his sudden willingness to come out of media hiding in an MTV.com interview posted this morning, and here's a Q&A with the two guys behind the video, screenwriter/director John Krokidas and producer Bruce Cohen.

At this point, if you're a person who uses technology, you really can't escape the steady stream of celebrity punditry. All of it is arguably unnecessary, but do you find it useless? Compelling? Mildly fun? Or TOTALLY AGGRO?

(Oh, and to make this item fair and balanced, behold a Hillary video set to one of my fave songs, ELO's "Evil Woman." Probably could've thrown in something pro-Obama instead, huh? Okay, here you go: Obama For America Runs on Dunkin'.)

I don't mind knowing who celebrites endorse. It doesn't change my mind on who I am voting for.

Eric Friedmann Wed, Mar 5, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

Makes no difference to me. As far as I'm concerned, ALL politicians are crooked in their own way and no one is capable of doing the job right!

GingerCat Wed, Mar 5, 2008 at 08:43 AM EST

This question was already asked on PopWatch.
Also, I don't think it was necessary to link to the "Evil Woman" video. A pro-Obama video is indeed more constructive and much less sexist (and yes, women can be sexist! We see it now more than ever).

I WONDER WHO CARROT-TOP IS SUPPORTING?

Nix Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 10:16 PM EST

Depends on the celebrity. Paris Hilton? Wouldn't listen to her. Bono, maybe, once I factor the ego out. Marion Cotillard? Depends on whether or not I'm on my meds. Chuck Norris? You don't mess with Chuck Norris. Point is, if they sound like sensible people, I'll give them a listen. But if they're idiots... (Of course, how many "celebrities" are sensible people...?)

Katie Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 10:06 PM EST

Celebrity endorsements don't really influence me. That Nicholson video was just baaaad, though. Strange/creepy endorsements probably have a negative effect.

Jane Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 07:46 PM EST

This video is embarrassing. It looks like something you'd play at assembly in the gym when you're running for Junior Class president. Sure it looks cool, but I have a hard time believing professionals did this. Shoot, I could do this, and if I can do it, its not clever.

do not care...celebs telling me who they vote for...i don't buy their perfume, i don't buy their steaks or purses, and i don't vote for their candidates..i try to use my brain from time to time, as crazy as that sounds...

SpaceCat85 Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 06:43 PM EST

I'm definitely on the liberal side of things, and I just find it embarrassing when celebrities try to clumsily force their liberalism on people. If anything, they've inadvertently helped stigmatize the word "liberal". A few are actually qualified to speak credibly about politics because their main work is politically-oriented by nature, but most vocal celebrities are just ignoramuses who've been living within that posh alternate reality known as Hollywood for way too long.

Marci Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

I couldn't care less who celebrities endorse. I have my own brain, thank you.

Ms Daisy Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

Anybody who takes advice from a celebrity deserves whatever outcome they get.

In Columbus, OH today Nick Cannon called into a radio station on behalf of Sen. Obama. If I were working for the Obama campaign I would have been embarassed to death. Cannon was talking in all slang and admitted that he didn't know where Obama stands on certain issues.

re: cimagato - As a Republican who watches Fox News (among other news outlets) I do not think Obama is a Muslim and Fox News does not plant that idea into people's heads. I'm thinking it's just his name that implies such to some people.
And regarding the question at hand, I was peeved at celeb endorsements during the Kerry/Bush election, but not so much now. It's not like everyone is going to vote for Obama because Oprah does.

cimagato Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

It's mildly amusing. I thought the Nicholson thing was a joke. (Seriously?) Like Snarf, I think some of them hinder more than help. I can't imagine any of celebrity changing anyone's mind about something like this. (But I'd like to know what Fox News is saying, because I can't shake my mom from thinking Obama is a Muslim. It's the only thing she watches, so where else is she getting it?--Not that there's anything wrong with being a Muslim, but it's just that he's not.)

daisyj Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 04:23 PM EST

Okay guys, I know you want to stay topical, and politics is all over the news these days but this is, what, the fourth time you have asked this exact question? And no, I still don't care. At all. Can we move on now?

Blue Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

I think for myself and could care less what celebs think about anything.

Snarf Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Honestley I think some of these celebs are so far out there (Jack looks craaaaaaaacked) I'm not sure if their support really helps the cause.

Sally Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

It's not important to me until the actual election. I think celebs including Oprah need to let the politics play out and then if they want to endorse somebody fine. But it doesn't sway me.

Broadway Baby Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

I think it's great. They are trying to give the electorate something to think about - I don't think it can change someone's mind. Hopefully just motivate someone to do a little research. In any case - whatever gets the citizenry involved is a (mostly) good thing.

Re: "fair and balanced," she was obviously kidding

Marcus Nikolaidos Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

Putting a pro-Hillary ad up and then an anti-Hillary ad up is not fair-and-balanced.

Ep Sato Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

Kind of a shocker sometimes. I knew Churck Norris was a Republican, but who expected Middleweight boxing champion Kelly Pavlick to be a Hillary Clinton supporter?
