'Dancing With the Stars': Maksim explains why a woman can't win

Our favorite Russian hunka lovin' Maksim Chmerkovskiy claims a woman won't win Dancing With the Stars because women don't vote for other women. Hey now! Is he full of it? He has a point, but I maintain that Kristi Yamaguchi's got a decent shot. Have you seen that girl spin?

After the jump, it's Maks on Mel. LITERALLY!

Okay, not literally. But kind of, considering the details of his brutal lesson plan for teaching Mel how to do both right and left splits. Owwwww. And if you didn't catch it yesterday, here's Maks on why he's not doing season 6. By the way, I can't believe these videos are real. Maks is always hovering around my cube in spirit, but in real, live, black velvet-coated flesh? GET OUT!

The dance when Miley Cirus and her Dad, I loved because of your dancing! It was magical! I love your talent and hope you will honor us with a comeback! Glad to see Maks again. I love love love him! I agree with him. However, I voted for him as well as Mel. I loved Julianne, too. Helio won because it was such a strecth for him with dancing and not MelB. This is why I voted more for Helio. It should have been a tie between the two couples. Both deserved to win.

Yeah Maks is right....Women don't vote for women... MelB deserved to win...

I voted for Maks the last two seaons and well his partners too!

Yes, Geemoney, we know that Kelly one the first DWTS, but do you also remember that a lot of voters (which are mostly women) were upset that she won over John O'Hurley? And what did ABC do? They decided to have a "Dance Off" in which John won. They couldn't let the woman enjoy her win in peace.

GeeMoney Mon, Mar 24, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

Didn't Kelly Monaco (aka Sam from General Hospital) win the very first Dancing With The Stars???? Did we all forget about that????

duranmom Mon, Mar 24, 2008 at 06:39 AM EST

Sorry, Maks, but I don't agree with your "women won't vote for other women" idea. I voted only for Jennie and/or Mel last season and they went far. I'm rooting for Kristi this time around and I'm hoping she goes all the way.

Kelley Mon, Mar 24, 2008 at 06:38 AM EST

Okay, I'm a woman and I disagree with Maks as for women not voting for other women. I LOVE the men pro's- in fact, have been known to vote for a couple just because of Derek or Maks. I think in the end, the women pro's take it up a notch and their male partner comes out on top.

I tend to agree with Maks' theory on why a woman won't win. I also tend to think that it seems more of a triumph when the men succeed - it seems more of a stretch for the guys to do that well.
Thanks Annie!

Yeah More Maks videos Please.

Babuda Fri, Mar 21, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

The reason women don't win is because when it comes down to that last freestyle dance, guys like Maks and Tony can't put their egos aside and let the star shine, rather than themselves. Think about Maks' dances with Mel and Laila, or Tony and Stacy.

Snarky-

I didn't necessarily notice a bias toward the men. In the instance of Guttenberg/Winokur, I think Winokur crossed the line from "happy to be here" to "annoyingly over-the-top spazz". Still, I hope and think she'll get better.

Also, if there IS a slight bias toward the men, just remember this: the male celebrities are asked to lead a professional partner (or at least appear like they're leading a professional partner). It's not like the women just sit back and do nothing, but they ARE led by pros.

I used to do a little ballroom back and still do a little dancing, and I can tell you that, in most cases, it's a LOT tougher for a novice man to learn how to lead than it is for a novice female to learn how to follow. Maybe the judges take that into account.

I hated on Stacey Keebler just cus of her long legs and good looks. I think that Kristi is cute, but not threatening to other women and therefore, has a shot. That being said, I liked having separate voting blocks for the men and the women. I voted for Mario, Jason Taylor AND Kristi. I also think that the professional judges are biased towards the men - they were so nice to the gute just cus he was happy to be there, but with Winkour, they were cranky, even though she was in the same class as the Gute - not great, just happy. Life is unfair, so is DWTS.
I do Miss Maks and his hotness. It is just not the same w/o himalthough Tony D's shiny pants were a good start!

OMG Fri, Mar 21, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

Hahahaha, Annie I love when you say "25.5" and you and Maks both roll your eyes at each other. brilliant!

I agree Kristi can win. But I thought Scary would win last season, so there is something to his theory.

Ceballos Fri, Mar 21, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

..and by "rethinking my stace", I meant "rethinking my stance."

Ceballos Fri, Mar 21, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

Going into this season, I absolutely agreed with Maks and even wrote as much in my first summary of the first episode this season when I picked Jason Taylor to win it all. In my mind, if Maks and Mel couldn't win last year, NO female celebrity can win.

But....Kristi Yamaguchi SERIOUSLY has me rethinking my stace. I'm still picking Taylor to win, but Maks's reason (and mine) for thinking a woman can't win (that women won't vote for a female celebrity who's often hotter than they are) doesn't fully apply to Yamaguchi.

In fact, I suspect that Kristi has as massive a female base from her figure skating days as any celebrity coming in. My gilfriend is a HUGE fan of hers, and Annie herself has blogged about her Yamaguchi fandom.

All that being said, I'm still not going to talk myself into thinking Jason Taylor won't win this thing.

Sallyinchicago Fri, Mar 21, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

I totally agree Maks, and that's why I stopped watching the program. I can understand if he's totally frustrated with it too.
