How long can Kristy Lee Cook last on 'Idol'?

Mar 14, 2008, 10:43 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Idolatry

Who else dodged a bullet with the ouster of David Hernandez? Plus, Jessica Shaw leaves me at a loss for words with perhaps the craziest Idol-related metaphor of all time, on an all-new episode of Idolatry!

All I can say is I think Kristy Lee Cook's Dad is very Sexy!

sabrina Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

I am sorry and I don't mean to offend anyone but I personally HATE Kristy Lee Cook. I'll admit that she has an ok voice. At first I liked her, but now at the performances, she sings with no emotion. I mean, have you watched her face when she sings? He expresion never changes and it looks so weird. She should show something, shouldn't she, maybe she should be more like one of the better singers! She just isn't that good.

The_Flash Sun, Mar 30, 2008 at 02:25 AM EST

OH!- I Love those videos! I saw those on YouTube months ago. Kristy is sooo sexy when raises her eyebrows when the guy asks "Are we talking about teeth?". You ask normal dudes on the net who the "Playboy Model" of A.I. is and it's easily Kristy Lee.

Ramiele could do Maxim or PB and Carly could do Rolling Stone I guess. Brooke's just too 'pure living' to wearing anything remotely skimpy- Syesha's not about being a 'pin-up'...so Naturally Kristy Lee's got a fanbase! We all know it's going to boil down this year to 2 dudes! (aka -a Sausage-fest)- and there goes 75% of your male demo.

I just heard Kristy's new song "Put Your Heart Into It" - it's got cross-over Pop potential!!!! http://www.myspace.com/kristyleecook

I need that little Dora doll to pop-up and say: "It's True Yall!!!!"

Kelley Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 01:43 AM EST

I really can't believe this girl is still on the show. She must be one of the most boring, unoriginal, and unimaginative contestants they've ever had. There is nothing exceptional about her - personality, looks, voice - it's all been done before only better. There are many talented people on the show this year and she is simply taking up space.

The_Flash Fri, Mar 21, 2008 at 01:47 AM EST

Man, you guys are really 'Hateful' to Miss Cook. I think you're jealous cause she's easily the prettiest and as your phone guest commented the most "Commerical". She's a great role model for girls: Loves animals, athletic, All Natural (No Surgery) beauty, Confident, and has a sense of humor about her situation. Oh Yeah, She CAN sing!

I think Slezak & Jessica don't like her cause she represents probable 'Conservative' Country fans (Culture War??) What are their credentials? This is not 'High School'- this is about selling an Image. Kristy Lee can sing the phone-book and guys would like it.

When is EW just going to 'report' the Biz and not try to 'rig it' from an editorial side?...She's going on the Tour and she'll probably be as popular as Kellie Pickler and YOU (EW) can't stop her! America stopped Amanda Overmyer thou.

In 1 or 2 years Kristy will be out there on TV, Commericals, Touring, Movies, dating famous guys and every time YOU have to print her name- I'm Gonna Laugh!

suzanne Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

How is Kristy even still on there? I'm sure she'll go home this week or next-but still. Love Jason Castro and his unique "folky" sound. As for the girls-well, I like Brooke but the guys are the ones doin it this season.

Jason S Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

Kristy Lee's voice sounded great on Eight Days A Week.

America made the right choice. Hernandez was dull and boring on all but one of his earlier performances and horrible (worse then Kristy) on Beatles night. Deserved the boot plain and simple.

America has been pretty spot on with their eliminations this year with the exception of Alaina.

Archuleta is awful and it would be a shame if he beat Brooke, jason and Cook because the producers see the next Zach Efron.

Richard Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

STIIL AGAIN WAY BETTER THAN JAQUZZI!

Richard Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 05:30 PM EST

She is way better than JACUZZI!

christy Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 08:23 PM EST

kristy needs to go home and quit wasting everyones time.little david is such a sweet kid i hope he does well, and i predict that carly, david cook and michael will make it a long way. What is up with the wanna be joplin chic

Oh come on! Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 07:38 AM EST

Just watched Idolatry. Slezak--journalism or tabloid jounalism? That bit about David A? He's a kid. Why not rely a bit on some facts--like that his Dad has a business of promoting "artists" (i.e., his meal ticket . . . ah . . . I mean kid), his Dad was banned from the Star Search set, and his Dad royally wailed on David at a recording session. Isn't is more likely that David lost concentration during the Tuesday live performance b/c his Dad's been riding him like a thoroughbred, and he's really just a kid?

Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

FYI: There is a bluegrass group called Beatlegras that covers the Beatles with a bluegrass twist. Its not exactly country, but they do a good job. Beatles 'purists' may still hate it. Check it out.

BFG, Ruben is actually covering a Kenny Loggins song. I know this because I wound up seeing Loggins up close and free...then laughed my a-ss off when I saw a bunch of 45 year olds try to pogo to "Highway to the Danger Zone". "I feel the need, the need for cheese!"

DeDe Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 08:40 AM EST

Kristy Lee Cook already had a country EP out and if you search on YouTube she had a video out, too.
As for David A.-he has been performing for YEARS. He was a runner up on Star Search and has been performing everywhere, he is more seasoned than any of them up there who are 5 and 6 years older than him. I wouldn't doubt he has a team behind him. Never mind the fact I just don't get the hype around him. He can sing well but no better than the others on the show and he certainly is not the second coming like some are purporting him to be.
And his father? Is something of a Stage Daddy and seems to flip out on people.

Ben Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 08:11 PM EST

J. Shaw is hilarious! This is great to watch, love to Slezak too!

bonnylass Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

well atlantareader, if you don't like Idolatry, maybe you should consider...not watching it. Just an idea. But you seem to be in the minority here.

Broadway Baby Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

Hey EP - I beg to differ: I think "Grampa Tucker" rocks it hard in his cameos but I do agree that Annie Barrett is missing too much of the time. And can I be a member of the Shawlings too? As far as Idol goes - WHY WHY WHY do we have to have another week of the Beatles? I was dreading the first week and what they were going to do to these songs but aside from KLC I was pleasantly surprised. Now I feel it can only go downhill. Always leave them wanting more is something that AI has never really taken into consideration I guess.

DanOregon Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

KLC should give "Black Velvet" a shot, actually any of the chicks should give it a try. I think Ramielle and Syesha can both hop on a bus, they're not going to win this thing either.

coco Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

i want to marry Michael and be Jessicas's BFF.
My life will be filled with so much fun, snark and great moments.
I am a Chemist but can you please hire me!!!!!
Love you guys, keep the idolatry comming?

You should have episodes for Americas Next Top Model, so much material there!

atlantareader Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

Ok.
I read the columns these 2 write, and I especially like Sleazak's writing (i.e. in print).
But there's a reason some people are in front of the camera, and some people are magazine writers.
UGGGHHHH.
These 2 are so uncomfortable in front of the camera, that I am uncomfortable watching (sorry guys.)
This whole idolatry thing isn't quite working.

suzanne Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

I haven't watch the idolatry yet, but i don't believe the posts that David A stages his screw up. Honestly, I think that's crazy. he's a 17 y-o kid. I just don't think he's conniving at all. I don't think he's sophisticated enough to be conniving. His dad? Now that's another story! Did you see the bit about his stage dad on et online? Poor David.

BigFatGoalie Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

Michael,

Whatever happened to "Hollywood's not America" being the theme song for the weekly ouster? Instead, we got a Ruben Stubbard song. Thanks.

cimagato Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

I love your evil mind, too, Slezak because I was thinking the same thing about little David. He didn't look panicked enough while tanking. A good possibility it could be fake. And not having a niche is not a good reason for K.L. to go country. Country is about emotion and musicianship. She's not Carrie Underwood. Maybe she should go for the breathy, lame pop-girl act. Her performances have been mediocre or awful. Short of someone else messing up, next week won't be a good one for her. (BTW, great seeing Jessica Shaw!)

Stephanie T. Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

Now I see why Malloy and Lee Cook were dropped from record companies to begin with. Vocally they are just okay. However, a jack in the box has more movement than those two. And yep, I noticed the outfits. Kristy is no Faith Hill.

cranky Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

Love the Spitzer/Archuleta metaphor. A perfect cocktail of topicality and snark. My hat is off, Jessica. My hat is off.

Ep Sato Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 12:20 PM EST

What wierds me out about Kristie Lee is that "waving left hand" thing she does. It looks as if she's trying to scratch an imaginary set of turntables like she's DJ KL Cook. I can handle the widestance and "I kill you" facial expressions, but the hand wave has got to go!

Jess Shaw is Al Gore. She's awesome but we never see much of her anymore. Is Idolatry is "in" and votefortheworst.com "five minutes ago"?

Having been a Jess Shaw junkie (what's the name for us, Shaw-lings?) for more than a decade, I think her commentary's awesome. She's also done a few snippets for several VH-1 series that are worth finding.

Out of curiosity, am I the only person who used a nomme de guerre for their Idolatry call in?

Finally, where's Annie B? I've loved the EW cameos (except for grampa Tucker) but am missing the original Pdub Idolatry Duo.

Kathgal Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

I can't believe that nobody has said anything about how hard Kristy Lee is trying to be Faith Hill. The wide stance, the jeans-and-sparkly-top outfits, this weeks hairstyle..I noticed it last week with the wide stance-jeans and flowy shirt last week too.

Amber Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

I don't think Lil' David staged that mess up at all...watch the tape he looks truly embarrassed while he's singing.

Elizabeth Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

I'm sorry, but I'm annoyed by the attitude that AI seems to have about the marginal singers: that if they can't hang with the rest of the contestants, they immediately need to be labeled as country (or gospel as past cases have been). I like just about every genre of music, but shoving KLC to country isn't going to cut it. Yeah, she's blonde, but she doesn't have the goods like Carrie Underwood or Taylor Swift, and she doesn't have the personality like Kellie Pickler. If she's shoved down that road here's my prediction: she'll be the opening act on one of those mass summer tours, film one video for CMT/GAC, and that will be it - Next, Please! You can't just "wing-it" and hope you stick to a genre - not in this contest.
BTW: Jessica & the unending robot footage: awesome. Big Ups to the shout-out to SodaFloat too!

Mozz Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

Jessica, you just coined the phrase of the year; AWESOME!!! I do think Michael is right and that D.A. breakdown was staged to halt the momentum of the Arch. sorry, but i'm cynical too.

Sallyinchicago Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

Kristy is the resident Kellie Pickler/Haley Scarnato, she's in it for at least 2 more weeks. Somebody else will be thrown under the bus -- Syesha or Jason C.

maya Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

More Jessica Shaw!!!! That was f-ing hilarious. I could watch those two all day.

MrKitty Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 10:02 AM EST

I thought the same awful thought about Little David....it seemed calculated - to show he is not perfect - which of course, HE IS.

Todd Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

I hate Kristy Lee Cook's performances, but a small part of me wants her to stay longer. The ONLY reason is that I want to see how many robot clips you guys can find in the next couple weeks. It kills me every time!

Stephanie T. Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

No offense but while Kristy does have an OK voice, she reminds me of a either Lerleene Mandrell or a "Hee Haw Honey". I'm waiting for a punchline.
