The horror setting that terrifies you the most

Categories: Deals, Horror, Reality TV, Television

You've heard about the horror-themed reality show The CW is cooking up for us this summer: Tentatively titled 13, it will put 13 contestants in a horror-film inspired setting and weed them out one-by-one with terrifying challenges. (Spider-Man/Evil Dead director Sam Raimi is among the exec producers, so it should be more legit than it sounds.) According to Variety, producers are still debating what kind of classic setting to use: "An evil small town? A lakeside retreat with a creepy secret? An abandoned cabin in the forest?"

What would you suggest? I'd go with a Kiss the Girls-style rustic underground cell block concept myself.

It puts the comments in the comment basket, below.

Brilliant closing. I never get tired of hearing that line reused. I think they are on the right track with a showl like that. I always look forward to October because I like that show where they stick cameras on people's heads and make them walk around alone in dark haunted places. What's it called? Oh yeah, Scariest Places on Earth.

"Murder in Small Town X" was awesome. It should've gotten mad ups at the time.

Mike Kenedy Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

Maybe they will put it in a Clue style mansion like the pitch my agent gave Ghost House that they turned down months ago with the exact same premise. They said they didn't do reality and now this is announced....interesting. Dialing my lawyer as I type...

Lisa Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

Have you ever seen that Keifer Sutherland movie, The Vanishing? Without giving too much away -- he's looking for someone. During the course of his search, he meets some bad bad people. At one point, he wakes up, in a coffin, buried alive. Or, a couple of years ago when the season finale for CSI had one of the characters kidnapped and -- you guess it -- buried alive. I can't take that. I can't breathe when they show scenes like that! Please don't let them bury me alive!!!!

Allison Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

How about something set up like the freaky set in Hostel?? The movie scared the bejesus out of me...darking hallways..swinging lights...not knowing who's coming in the room. That still creeps me out.

Dixie Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

I know a couple of good horror movie settings right here in my area. There's an abandoned mental hospital in Knoxville that closed years ago amid reports of patient cruelty--isn't that considered a classic setting?
Then there's the Stone House in Alcoa, which is kind of like our own Winchester House...built by a Jehovah's Witness as a nuclear fallout shelter. The dude was convinced he would never die as long as construction on the house continued. Now people say you can hear construction noises going on sometimes in different parts of the house. Either one of those would make a good setting to me.

Matt Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

Oh, man. What about the wide open outback, like in "Wolf Creek?" Possibly the scariest movie I've seen. What's scarier than realizing you can go ANYWHERE and STILL can't escape??

Nancy Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

Why not have it all? They visit a creepy lakeside retreat in an evil small town. When they invariably run screaming into the forest, they find an abandoned cabin. Underneath the cabin? A rustic underground cell block.

Mozz Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

a creepy hotel in the mountains with a big Maze in the back. oh, and a snowstorm, but that's something the producers could only pray for. Oh, and cast a creepy little kid.

Angela Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

The other responses gave me an idea.

An isolated barren Ghost town (Haunted of course) with an abandonded mine or some creepy caves.

The contestants have to earn the right to go into the underground area to search for supplies in order to survive.

Brian Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

An abandoned amusement park. So many creepy possibilities.

Kay Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

The old western town from Kid Nation...

Catherine Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 08:12 AM EST

Anything with Porcelan Dolls will do...They terrified me!

Eric Friedmann Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 08:02 AM EST

One of the creepiest settings I ever saw was the isolated lighthouse in John Carpenter's THE FOG. The ocean, in the dead of night, can be very frightening, but aside from JAWS, it is not used very ofter as a scary setting.

DLG Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 07:09 AM EST

Middle of the Night, Gunshots and Fire, and Bunch of psychos. That's the horror setting that scares me the most is a KKK raid a la "Birth of A Nation" or "Rosewood".

tina Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 03:17 AM EST

My vote is with Em. Not much scares me but the Winchester House is creepy and so is it's background!!

Vickie Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 01:08 AM EST

How about an old farm house?

LK Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 08:18 PM EST

I'd have to go with the house from "The Blair With Project" also. Being from Pennsylvania (im sure there are other areas like this) where theres empty farmland and heavily wooded areas and old abandoned houses - that movie definitely creeped me out

Shamrock Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

The house from Blair Witch Project

kats Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

Fun house. Or any place with clowns, puppets, marionettes, manequins, dummies or clown dolls, so I guess a toymaker's shop. You'd lose me at hello.

ESO Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

I would go for the totally CLASSIC Friday the 13th setting!!!!!!!!!!! Some isolatiion, creepy lake and creepy cabins with buzzing old lightbulbs ---- the works! Love it!

Emoney Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

I agree with Robyn -- anyplace is scary if you let your imagination run wild. My own house is terrifying when my husband isn't home to reassure me that I won't be murdered in bed. So I think just a normal house, but a little dimly lit and with creaky wood floors. Raimi can use my house if he wants. Call me, Sam.

Robyn Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

All these suggestions are classic, and sadly, way overdone.... maybe it's just me, but I think, with the right atmosphere and suggestions, even your typical suburban backsplit with attached carport can be terrifying at 3am..... why go with the stereotype?

David Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST

You HAVE to go with the classic Haunted House setting, some big, multi-storied Victorian complete with cellar, attic, the works. But this is a Sam Raimi project so he'll probably go back to his Evil Dead roots, and go with creepy cabin/dark forest.

jessica Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

how about an old plantation home, like myrtle's plantation (supposedly the most haunted house i america) or something like that found in Skeleton key with eerie dripping moss and scary locals????

EP Sato Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

My favorite setting for horror movies is at an empty shopping mall. Dawn of the Dead did it (twice), Chopping Mall did it (with robot security guards killing people), and Night of the Comet did it (for part of the movie).

But since we're talking Raimi, my guess is this will take place in an abandoned cabin in the woods.

laurel Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 08:50 AM EST

Realistic choice: The asylum from "Session 9".
Not at all realistic, but scares the pants off me: The cave from "The Descent". The isolation is horrifying enough!

Michael Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 02:29 AM EST

Jones Town. Skip the kool-aid

Angela Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

Underwater especially in a Submarine close quarters and no where to run - trapped under tons of water - it makes me feel a bit claustraphobic just thinking about it.

MrSalamander Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

I once snuck into the old Fresno Hotel with six of my buddies - we came in through the fire exit which is now gone. It's about 15 stories or so, and has been abandoned for years, but can't be torn down because it's an historic building. Massive. Lots of rooms. One light blinking through all the windows on one side of the building from a very large nearby digital clock tower. And... there were people living in there!

Katelyn Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

I vote abandoned, isolated asylum as well... or maybe a prison with those old gas chambers. Yuck. Anyplace where numerous evil people have died is a given for scares.

Rob Grizzly Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

A daycare center. During recess.

Or an old abandoned carnival

kat Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

who cares about the setting....where can i sign up 2 play ?

Jill Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

Any very old mansion with a history of violence attached to it. Something with secret rooms and passageways to God knows where.

dalumat Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

an abandoned asylum... in the middle of the forest.

Preston Kulik Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

I vote for the Danvers-like abandoned insane asylm/crazy house. Those places ( like Dixmont State hospital in Emsorth. Pa), are scary from the get go.

LisaMama Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

i also vote for a creepy abandoned hospital/asylum -- scary! But there's something classic horror-ish about a lakeside summer camp -- perhaps with only a few counselors left cleaning up the site, wrapping up the camping season.

Dan Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

The small creepy town thing has been done before. Anyone remember 'Murder in Small Town X' on Fox...somewhere around 2000.

Sherri Smith Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

One place I would find especially scary/creepy would be an abandoned hospital, asylum or prison. Those places usually have some kind of "residual" feelings about them.

Shauna Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

I think a great setting would be an old mansion on a hill a la "The Haunting" starring Julie Harris. The walls breathe, the statues in the garden watch you, the caretakers won't stay in the house after dark... the house wants you. Perfect!

Shauna Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

Em Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

How about a real, legitmately creepy location: the Winchester House. Without a guide I'd have gotten seriously lost. And the backstory? Weird!

Stephanie T. Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

A movie marathon of the "movie" parodies except for the "Scary Movie" series

Silv Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

Something isolated in the middle of nowhere - even in broad daylight, travelling the interstate, when I go past farms that weirdly have no one around for miles, the isolation is totally creepy. Or the irony of a sealed off area, soundproofed with one-way windows - you can see out but no one can see you or hear you - or your screams - yikes!

Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

stick them in a room (Clockwork Orange style) forced to watch Keanu Reeves acting and listen to American Idol rejects singing (or Britney Spears for that matter). Truly frightening.

Jon Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

The middle of nowhere. Broad daylight. When I ride down a bike path past the neighborhoods, trailer parks and farms I always freak myself out with the sense of being vulnerable to some kind of attack. I think this stems from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the scariest movie ever made. All the horrible events of the picture begin during the day, off the beaten track.

Stacey Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

Abandoned hospital/insane asylum. Especially one that still has some of the creepy old medical equipment that look more like instruments of torture.

Katherine Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

My vote is for an isolated island set-up like in Mindhunters. You would have full access to lodge, cabins and the entire island with no way off!

Stephanie T. Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 09:09 AM EST

A nursing home at night. That's always creepy.

Sarah A Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

Colorado, abandoned hotel, winter.

Thanks to the Shining, I will never be staying at a lodge!

kim in kentucky Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

I like that house with no exits!! And maybe a cave, sewer, etc -- dark, rats, bugs, mutants .....

crazy backwoods Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 07:04 AM EST

the town from deliverance.

Mandi is hilarious... Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 01:41 AM EST

Oops - I of course meant "basket", not "section"

Mandi is hilarious... Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 01:38 AM EST

Ha! "It puts the comments in the comment section, below." Classic, Mandi.

emily Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 11:20 PM EST

i say Silence of the Lambs. they are dropped in a hole with only a creepy transvestite to lower a bucket of supplies -- mostly lotion but since it's tv they can have a little food.

moving man Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 11:00 PM EST

i agree with the idea of a small evil town, with limited supplies. Just get the contestants to that town and leave them there to survive.

Nix Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 10:54 PM EST

A 10,000 sqft 67th-floor Manhattan condo apartment furnished with the latest in contemporary art installations and 2,000-sq-ft. kitchen with state of the art appliances that are never used except for cocktails. That's a place that reeks of ultimate evil.

Snarf Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

Haunted Abandoned Insane Asylum! Cause although you don't have to be crazy to want to be on reality TV, it sure does help!

Kristin Phillips-Thomas Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

A creepy old house that doesn't seem to have an exit. You keep opening doors and going through hallways but there is never a way out.

Valerie Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 08:06 PM EST

Anywhere with a badly covered well. Ugh... Creeps me out anytime !

Nix Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 08:03 PM EST

Set it in that real-life sanatorium -- I forget where it was -- where all those people died during the influenza pandemic of 1917. Yeah. That'll do.

StaleCake Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 07:13 PM EST

No question - cabins in an abandoned summer camp. All the joys of Friday the 13th and Evil Dead rolled into one. The creepy woods, the un-secured buildings, the need to go outside of your cabin to use the (unlock-able_ bathroom, the poor lighting of just sodium lamps and flashlights....

Benaria Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

I completely agree. I don't think a lakeside cabin or creepy house would quite do it for me. Maybe if it was VERY remote. I'm thinking more along the lines of Saw-style settings. The creepy bathroom from the first movie, or the weird maze like rooms from the other ones.

Crystal Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

Anything where you can't see outside/sunlight would be my undoing. Even if I was in a cabin tied up, if I could 'sense' the outdoors I'd be okay. So, something underground gets my vote. Also - this sounds SO freaky, no way would I watch, but horror movies seem to be popular nowadays...
