Marion Cotillard on 9/11: Je ne regrette rien

Mar 4, 2008, 11:44 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Celebrity Scandals, Hollywood Hate Crime, Oscars 2008

Marioncotillard_l Guess the Oscar victory curse is starting early for Marion Cotillard, who is already facing backlash and demands that she return her statuette — not for anything she's done on screen, but for unearthed comments from an old interview in which she suggested that the World Trade Center collapse was engineered by its owners and was not the work of terrorists, and that the 1969 moon landing never happened. It doesn't look like the controversy is going away anytime soon, since Cotillard (via her agent) is refusing to apologize and notes that there are plenty of other places besides America where she can find film work. (Shades of Spinal Tap's manager insisting that the cancellation of a Boston gig is no big deal because "it's not a big college town.")

Now, as someone who was in New York on 9/11, yeah, I do find such comments offensive, but I'm satisfied to chalk them up to stupidity rather than malice. Won't stop me from going to see Cotillard's next movie. If every star who spouted 9/11 conspiracy theories were drummed out of showbiz, Charlie Sheen would be out of a job. So would Rosie O'Donnell. (Oh, wait...) And if everyone in Hollywood who ever did or said something that was stupid or offensive (to someone) were forced out of work, the only performer left standing would be Elle Fanning. Celebrities have the right to shoot their mouths off, and so do you. Have at it.

Jake, do yourself a favor and don't support that propaganda festival of an internet film. I've seen Loose Change, and once I did some research after watching it, I concluded it's a ton of BS. Many qualified experts debunked every single theory proclaimed by Dylan Avery (Loose Change's head producer) and his supporters, among other 9/11 conspirators. Even before watching the vid, every structural engineer I met said it's not farfetched the way the twin towers fell. Basically, one ascending floor full of debris falls over another and then another and then another until the entire tower goes down (they labeled it 'the pancake effect'). So yes, it's possible for the collateral damage from the plane to cause the towers to fall, not from a demolition like Avery suggests.
If you want more proof, go to the url below. The Loose Change Guide meticulously deconstructs the film to the point of seeing how truly ridiculous and laughable it is.

Don't you dare give your Oscar back, girl. You so deserved it!!!

AJ Wed, Mar 5, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Who the hell cares? She is entitled to her opinion! And to take back her Oscar?! Keep in mind some things folks:

1. Mel Gibson spouted off anti-gay and anti-Jewish remarks and he still has two Oscars.

2. Roman Polanski slept with a 13 year old girl and he won an Oscar AFTER the fact.

3. Roberto Benigni made "Pinocchio" and Liza Minelli and Elizabeth Taylor went bats**t crazy.

SO, a simple controversial opinion...means nothing.

She's not running for President people.

How about before we take away any Oscars we remove some people from office...sound good?

Martha Wed, Mar 5, 2008 at 10:21 AM EST

Nathan, thanks very little for that giant bucket of dour cynicism. We get what you're saying - everything sucks, people are horrible, and nothing is likely to change any time soon. How do you even get out of bed in the morning?

Wed, Mar 5, 2008 at 06:20 AM EST

Kudos to the Elle Fanning comment.

Poor Marion, I bet she regrets this.

Divo Wed, Mar 5, 2008 at 03:48 AM EST

911 was an inside job ! Do not take my word , but do not comment if u are too lazy to research. Actors , scientifics, engineers and even military retiree all agree to whats obvious . IT IS OBVIOUS IF U DO YOUR RESEARCH BUT SINCE THE MEDIA IS OWNED BY THE BAD GUYS. YOU HAVE RECEIVED MANIPULED DECEPTIVES LIES!
As soon as you wake up , as soon we can end the fall of the species. Because the conspiracy is much more bigger than just 911. 911 is the pandore box , once u openned it you will slowly get the big picture .
THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE

GREAT. ANOTHER REASON FOR THOSE PREDISPOSED TO HATE THE FRENCH TO DO SO. PASS THE "FREEDOM FRIES"....

nathan Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

Anyone see that video of the marines tossing a puppy off a cliff, head on over to nypost.com to watch our wonderful fighting boys in action. Seeing things like that make me hope for a checkpoint bombing at one of their bases.

jason Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

people are allowed to think and say whatever they want. you can make up your own mind, you should not base your opinions on celebrities. for fear of attack, i'm not gonna say anything about the subject, but these boys and girls fight wars and battles every day so that we can speak freely. don't be mad at these people for thinking on their own, it's their right as humans, it's up to you to believe them or form your own opinion.

nathan Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

Let's just all hope that the next president won't be a worthless pile of dog sh** like the current one, but this is America, so he/she probably will be.

nathan Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

Plus, Cotillard is a fine actress and hotter than hell. I'd like to keep her around a while.

nathan Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 07:49 PM EST

The funny thing is: She's probably right. Honestly, there's no way those towers would collapse from impact at such a high point. Not sure it was the designers of the building, more likely the scummy U.S. government would be behind something that despicable. The moon landing was probably bull**** too, they just had to beat the Russians there, it would have been easy to fake.

Martha Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 07:31 PM EST

Elizabeth, if you want serious discussion of politics and news issues, there are many, many, many blogs to frequent. It's not like this is the only news story out there, just one that has caught some people's attention. This blog deals with entertainment, in this case, an entertainer that happens to have an opinion about world events. Is this entry any more frivolous than any other PW blog entry? No.

darla Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

Um, who cares? She won a trophy for playing someone else. Really not worth the time it took to comment here!

donner Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

do we care what any actress says, no matter what nationality she is? How much information does she have into the real situation? Isn't she allowed to say what she thinks, right or wrong? is anyone afraid her opinions are going to influence anyone? why does it matter what she thinks or Jack Nicholson thinks? they are ACTORS, they make movies, not foreign policy...If Elizabeth Taylor made these comments, would anyone care? why?

jaime Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

Seriously. . .we all have freedom of speech! People get over it... Tons of us believe 9/11 was not done by the terrorist alone! Keep your OSCAR girlfriend. . .and congrats for having the best acceptance speech of the night!!!

Jake Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

Havent any of you ever seen loose change?

Ellipsian Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Short and sweet: everyone--celebrities included--has an opinion. Ms. Cotillard--in MY opinion--was not aiming to be insidious or controversial, but was rather just voicing her (rather kooky...) viewpoint. BFD. Can we be done with this now? (sorry, Gary, not to block your blog item, but the whole thing is a bit silly, isn't it?)

Eric Friedmann Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

Good for you, Elizabeth! Have a drink on me!

Ames Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

I've heard much more offensive things said about 9/11. I believe here comments were specifically about why/how the buildings fell. I've heard that argument before. Having to explain the difference between a prop engine plane and a jet plane full of fuel to someone is not worth the time or energy. And I think the fact that she's French is adding to the outrage here. Not that that's a good excuse or anything.

Mozz Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

Wow, she's pretty!

Pink Phantom Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

Is this any worse than Ann Coulter calling the 9\11 widows harlots or Rick Santorum comparing homosexuality with bestiality?

Nose Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

I am sorry, but I don't get how this is offensive. Just say it had been a terrible accident in one of the buildings rather than terrorism or say that it was a conspiracy on behalf of the owners, the govt, whoever...it doesn't diminish the fact that so many people died, it doesn't lessen or gloss over the tragedy of the day. People will believe what they believe. I don't think Mos Def or Cotillard or anyone else who believes this is saying anything about the people who died or those they left behind, or New York in general.

Elizabeth Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

Eri, exactly my point. People here are seriously discussing this. There's primary elections going on to pick the next leader of our nation, a leader that has to contend with getting us out of a Vietnam like quagmire. And yet, this is the point of discussion, Marion freaking Cotillard is right. Who knows, maybe the Republicans put this news out there to distract us from the important news... it's all a conspiracy, and yes, I know, i'm part of the freaking problem, which is why, i'm giving myself a month off the EW, website, cause this is getting freaking ridiculous.

great "reporting" Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

thanks, gary, for being another "journalist" to create drama where there is none. as it has been mentioned before, this was said years ago, and the quote is taken out of context. now you're taking part in riling people over a non-issue. you're just as bad as tmz.

Eric Friedmann Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

Elizabeth, given the way you wrote your statement, you sounded serious. Not my fault if I misunderstood you.

Snarf Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

Yawn.

Dan Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

the people mostl likely to really care about such quotables are also the people least likely to have heard of MC or seen her movies. I think she'll be fine.

nunya Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

i'm really disappointed in her. i mean, it's one thing to believe in conspiracy theories, BUT WHAT ABOUT ALL THOSE PEOPLE IN THOSE BUILDINGS AND IN THE PLANES WHO DIED???? that's the important point. does she or anyone else really think that ppl would be sacrificed in such a manner just to get rid of some old buildings. no, i don't think her oscar should be taken away, and i don't think her opinions have the significane of engineers, experts, etc., but when i hear stupidity, i challenge it.

Rich Haller Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

Nice title! :)
I would say, ignorant or missinformed rather than stupid, though I have to question the judgment of anyone who subscribes to either of those 'conspiracy theories' (wonder what is her opinion on Area 51 and the alien autopsies).

However, I agree that she has just as much right to repeat such ridiculous fantasies as anyone, and it should have no bearing on her abilities or desirability as an actor.

M Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

Regarding the 9/11 controversy Marion Cotillard released the following statement: “My statements on that program have been taken completely out context and been crafted into a story that has no merit." She stressed her deep apologies regarding her statements. Her attorney, Vincent Tolesano, said that "Marion never intended to contest nor question the attacks of September 11, 2001; and regrets the way old remarks have been taken out of context."

KateDFW Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

I do not listen to "celebrities" on anything other than what their latest movie was about. I don't care who they vote for or what religion they believe to be the best. I am an adult over the age of 21 (way past 21) so I do not "follow". With that being said...let her say what she wants. It will catch up with her...oh wait, I think it already has!

MikeknaJ Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

9/11 Truthers are ridiculous. Cotillard does have the right to say what she wants to say. And the viewing public has the right to point out that she lives in a fantasyland, and that her comments are offensive to those that lost friends and loved ones in the attack.

Elizabeth Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

Eric, I was just trying to farcically point out that this is simply the ridiculous media obsession of the moment, and what scares me most of all is that you have children at all.

Matt Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

Who. Cares. I love how here in America we talk all about "freedom," and as soon as someone says something we don't like, we start making demands like, "take her Oscar away!"

Eric Friedmann Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

Elizabeth, I didn't realize that "cool people" were such mindless idiots! You know, it's immature-liitle-girl comments like that, that make me happy that I have a son and not a daughter!

Eric Friedmann Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

The world is full of idiots, and idiots say stupid things. Taking back her Oscar would be meaningless. If anything, she should keep it so she can always be reminded of her stupid comments.

Elizabeth Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

This is so MONDAY... and in case you haven't noticed, it's Tuesday and it's all about David Hernandez of Idol being a stripper. It's what the cool people are talking about. I just came here to point that, you guys, not the cool kids.

Kathleen Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

Uh, hm. I guess I should read a full translation of the original interview - because the exerpt that is quoted in the 03/02 article is not only taken completely out of context, but at no point does she say that she thinks 9/11 and the moon landing were fakes. She says she tends to take the side of conspiracy theories and that she wonders when we are being lied to. Ack! She's a witch! Witch, I say!! Good lord.

off the subject but... Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 01:28 PM EST

I'm supposed to be diligently working but the Spinal Tap reference made me burst out laughing. Classic Gary!

Edgar Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

I agree with the majority that this is a non-event. The linked article on her interview was quite interesting (i.e. her views on 9/11 stem from a bestseller she had read but which I was unfamiliar). I thought the most interesting thing out of all of this was contrasting her commments on 9/11 and the moon landing. Speculating about terrorist activity and war actions is very commonplace (remember the conspiracy theories after Pearl Harbor?), and let's face it - having a healthy skepticism about our govt in general since Desert Storm is warranted. However, the moon landing? That's just goofy. What's next; the earth isn't round?

junior Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

Her comments are only offensive, if you believe them! It's like the crazy guy on the subway, he may say some crazy stuff but you don't believe any of it so you just say "okayyy" and move on. This is obvs a slow news year for entertainment journalists.

Houstonian Jen in DC Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

EvilCornbread, I know which blog you've been reading!

Martha Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

I agree with Gary - her comments were offensive. But it's not like there aren't many others out there who believe some sort of 9/11 conspiracy theory. What I find fascinating is the weight people are giving to this person's opinion - she won an Oscar, thus we should care about her nutjob political ideas? Why? We wouldn't care if presidential candidates started spewing about the intricacies of film making, so why is it such news when actors spout off about politics?

greg Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

If she has the right to mouth off (she does), then we also have the right to be offended. We don't have the right to take her Oscar away (that's silly), but we can be angered by such remarks.

Eric Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

It amazes me that this is big news. Like others have said ... If she didn't win the Oscar this would never have surfaced again.

It's simply her opinion based on what she has seen and heard and nothing more. It doesn't change the fact that she did a wonderful performance.

jay Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

Mos Def is an idiot, too. But he didn't just win an oscar and probably won't ever command the kind of attention that Cotillard is attracting right now.

Karen Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

Big deal. She's entitled to her opinion and shouldn't have to apologize. Why is this news? She's not the first to question 9/11, and her comments are years old. Who cares? Next!

Ellie Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

Just do some research on 9/11 truth, and you will see that there are many scientists, architects, and other experts who find it curious that the Twin Towers collapsed the way that they did. Even the owner of Tower 7 admitted on tv that he gave the okay to "take down" Tower 7, even though the 9/11 Commision Report states otherwise. I fail to see how questioning the official story would be offensive to New Yorkers. If something like that happened in my city, I would want answers.

Ceballos Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

While there's no doubt the comment is offensive and insensitive, I agree with Catherine: Cotillard is an actress, not some sort of social expert or any sort of authority on the matter. Her crazy opinion is no different in my eyes, than the same crazy opinion coming from your average non-Oscar winning schmos.

What I'm really interested in talking about is why this year-old interview is resurfacing now. I mean, do we honestly think this would've been brought up this week if Julie Christie or Ellen Page had won the Oscar?

Anjeliki Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

Looks like The View just found another panelist.

Paul Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Thank you so much for saying that, Gary.

EvilCornbread Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Mos Def said the same thing on Real Time with Bill Maher.

And white people love Mos Def.

soulman Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

Stupidity or malice, the comments were completely degrading, and an insult to the intelligence of any New Yorker, American, or human being affected by the tragedy. And yeah, she's adding insult to injury by not apologizing. I don't think they should take her Oscar away (she was wonderful in La Vie en Rose), but it's disappointing that her agent is shrugging the matter off. Take responsibility for your actions!

Catherine Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

She won an Oscar that does not make her in any way a political or social expert, so anything she might say is as good or bad as the person next to you.

Heather Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

There's different kind of offensive, and hers is the kind of offensive that's just not newsworthy. It's sad, pathetic and delusional, but not controversial. There are loons with that kind of thinking all over the world. (Think of all those people that still think the Holocaust never happened.)

Gringo Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

This amazes me. Why is the media so obsessed with this? So what if she questions somethings legitimacy. It is certainly no grounds to have her stripped of her Oscar. This is simply another case of the media trying to spin this into a bigger story than it really is. As Eli already said - we common folk could care less.

bonnylass Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

To suggest she should give back her oscar is ridiculous, of course. She can say whatever she wants. But for those of you who dismiss what she says because she's "young"...she's a 32 year old woman! Surely that makes her old enough to be responsible for what she says.

K Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

Yawn! Many non-Americans have some wacky conspiracy theories about 9/11. It would be one thing if she said we deserved it (which I personally have heard and find VERY offensive). I look forward to her next role!

Eli Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

Yesterday I tried to bring it up at work, and then we ended up talking about how brilliant she was in La Vie en Rose. Conclusion we came down to: The Media Cares about this a lot. We the people: Not so much.

Mozz Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

I was in New York on Sept. 11th, and that was one of the most terrifying days of my life. And yet, two years later, i speculated that it just didn't seem right that they came down so fast. Like there was something more behind it. and I was certain tat the U.S. government knew about it before it happenned. The mind tries to make sense out of tragedy in a way that you will feel safe. I don't mind what she said... she's truly a gifted actor, and I will continue to search out her work. Now the Moon Landing, clearly she's got an over-active imagination. But isn't that exactly what makes her so brilliant in the role that won her, her justly deserved Academy Award. I for one think Julie Christie is responsible for the leak of the magazine articles. But that's just me!

Broadway Baby Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

I just find it interesting that once someone gets a little notoriety we are all (and I am including myself) so interested in their views on global terrorism or the current economic stimulus package. Obviously giving up her Oscar would be ridiculous as it had nothing to do with her views on the moon landing that happened, I'm guessing, a good decade before she was even born. She may just be young - but she is a hell of a performer. Imagine the entertainment we would have missed if the first time Barbra Streisand opened her mouth in controversy she would have been shipped overseas. God Bless America!

Sally Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

She's still young and she lives overseas. The folk overseas from the Middle Easterners to the Europeans don't believe 9/11 is all it's cranked up to be and there are a lot of theories out there. Even here in this country people are saying that Bush is behind 9/11...yadayada....but to demand that she give her statuette back is silly. If anything she will find MORE work overseas; she may not have Americans go see her work, but she's probably got a sympathetic ear overseas. I remember the French being criticized after 9/11 and when they didn't support us, congressmen wanted to rename French fries -- absolutely silliness. It's probably just five people asking for her give-back. She did an admirable job, she earned it, fuggedaboutit.

Jason Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

Return her Oscar?!?! That's crazy. Oscar's should be based on the performance alone (and hers was amazing), not politics. How crazy, nice or stupid she, or any other actor is, is irrelevant.
