Does your DVR ever make you late for work?

Angelboreanz_l I've been taping the morning Angel repeats on TNT, because even though I loved Buffy, I somehow didn't tune into Angel until Season 3, when I happened to be at a friend's apartment when she was watching the episode in which a certain vampire staked herself to give birth to a certain baby. (I vagued that up for spoiler-phobes.) I kept with the show through the killer fourth season (The Beast! Jasmine!), but for some reason, never made it into Season 5. I don't know why. I'm clearly enjoying it now, since I was an hour late to work yesterday because I had to watch the freshly-DVR'd "Life of the Party" episode. I knew I wouldn't have time to watch it last night after work, so I had to watch it before I went in. Right? Before you answer, remember that this is the episode where Wolfram & Hart throws a Halloween party and everyone ends up doing what Lorne tells them to do: Fred and Wesley act drunk (so well), Gunn "marks his territory," Spike thinks positively, and Eve and Angel (Sarah Thompson and David Boreanaz, pictured) "get a room."

But back to my question: Does your DVR ever make you late for work? When was the last time, or, if you're a frequent offender, what's your best story? I'm sure your boss isn't reading this. (And if mine is, the fact that I turned my experience into this blog item technically means that I was "working from home" yesterday morning, no?)

P.S.: TNT's weekday morning Angel repeats cycle back to Season 1 on March 18, with the episode titled "City Of," should you want to join me in watching from the beginning.

Matt is always late for work. Is it his DVR? I have not idea, but he got into work today at 2:00 pm. WTF?

I am 32 and would not be caught dead watching Buffy when it was on tv.. Since its release on DVD I have become a Buffy and Angel junky! Its the writing and the Brilliant Dialogue that gets you so hooked you keep saying "just one more episode!" At first glance its a cheeze factory but anyone with a hankoring for Sarcasam will love the show. I so wish they would come out with a movie version all over again!

Myst Sat, Mar 8, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

To Kate: I would say that you would get even more out of watching Angel if you are over 40, as you then can see the underlying themes they are working on. Shakespearian in scope as they are :)

Kate Sat, Mar 8, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

Thanks for the info! Looks like I need to make a run to Blockbuster.

Sharon Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 11:24 PM EST

To Kate, Yes, Buffy and Angel are my favorite shows ever and I'm in my "more than 40's". I think the problem that many folks have is that they think of them as vampire shows and they are great shows that happen to contain vampires. You have to start with the 1st 3 seasons of Buffy, then alternate between the last 4 seasons of Buffy and the 5 seasons of Angel. But if you can't get past vampires and demons, you won't like them. They are really more fantasy than SciFi. I find most folks my age, and even a good bit younger, are too "mature" for fantasy shows and never give them a chance. Buffy has more teen angst while Angel is a more serious, darker show. But both of them have a lot of humor. I hope you'll give them a chance.

ancestor Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 07:37 PM EST

To Kate in her 40s. The answer is yes, I am in my 60s and was (am) addicted to Buffy and Angel. Check out the dvds and if you like sci fi or that genre, prepare to be entertained.

Randomeis Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

For me it is more like the DVR made me take too long of a lunch break.

Kate Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

OK, I have to ask...what is so great about BUFFY? Everyone here seems to love it so much! Is this a show I need to to rent and spend the weekend watching? Now I am sure I am much older than most people here so would people over 40 like it? I bow to your all knowing opinions now...

Miriam Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

I DVR the TNT Angel repeats as well (also on at 5 AM for me).

The thing that sometimes makes me late for work is when I watch my DVR'd Daily Show/Colbert from the night before.

Kayro Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

I am always going in late because I have to watch any DVR show for which there will be an EW TV Watch column about. I can't stand to have to wait several days to read what the writers have to say. Fridays are the worst, as I often have Lost, Survivor, American Idol to view before going to work.

Char Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

I miss Angel - even though I like him on Bones...this was Josh at his finest

Chris G Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

This is kind of different, but am I the only one who tries to sneak out of work a few minutes early and speed all the way home just so I can tune into Golden Girls repeats on Lifetime at 4pm even though I have all seven seasons on DVD?

Ok, I guess I am.

jls Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

I was a half hour late for work this morning because I had to RE-watch last night's Lost so I'd be ready for the watercooler talk today!

NineDaves Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

so i went to see the homecoming on broadway last night, which kept me out until all hours of the evening. i was then an hour and a half late to work today because i had to get through lost, survivor, make me a supermodel, idol, and celebrity apprentice before internet spoilers and office coworkers ruined them for me. i had to cancel a meeting, of course, but hey - priorities!

Natalie Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

I always watch Angel when I'm getting ready for work. I need to use my DVR, because it is on at 4 and 5 in the morning, where I live. It has made me just a little bit late, once in a while.

I love season 5. I love Spike and Angel together. I wish there were more seasons, because I love how those two characters interact with one another.

Na Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

i was never into Gilmore Girls. but i was sick one week and caught the reruns on TNT and i was hooked and i'm now obsessed. i thought i was the only one who did this. i'm both late and running on 5 hours sleep. at one point, i barely made it at all with me buying entire seasons. i've also been taping 90210. there's nothing like the brenda years b4 that tramp kelly stole dylan from brenda. sorry, i digress...

Jennifer Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 10:18 AM EST

Watching Sex & The City & Felicity reruns on my DVR makes me late for work way too many times.

new yorker Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

Although I've seen all the episodes of Arrested Development countless times, I watch it again on 2 - 3 mornings of the week before I go to work. And I find the jokes as funny, if not funnier than the last. Also, I DVR ANTM and House, so I can watch it in the morning before I go to work, so I'm late on Wednesday and Thiursday mornings. Other than that, Saturdays between 11am and 2pm is my DVR catch up time. Talk to me or call during that time, and I may have to have someone take care of you.

Alli Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

I just started watching Angel at 6 and 7 am even though I have to walk to catch a train that leaves at 8:06am. I am a huge Buffy fan that never took an interest in Angel until I started getting obsessed with Bones. I think David Boreanaz is worth the risk of being late, though I'm probably going to start recording the episodes when they start running season 1 again in a few weeks.

Sharon Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 01:12 AM EST

I get up at 5am CST and have to leave at 6, so I can only watch bits of Angel. I don't have a DVR, but I do have all the seasons on DVD (2 sets, for security). I still watch the bits and pieces. I shower and get everything ready the night before. During the commercials I jump up and do stuff - make the coffee, feed the dogs, scoop the cats litter, and gather more things to put on during the show - my shoes, earrings, moisturizer, etc. But I'm always out of the house at 6:05 because I teach - being late is not an option! So, no, TV doesn't make me late to work, but sometimes I am sleepy because I can't go to bed before Jon Stewart is over!

Kacey Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

I'm suprised by how many people like Season 5 of Angel...in many ways I thought it was the weakest season, despite good episodes like You're Welcome and the whole Ilyria arc. I just thought the absence of Cordy really detracted from the show, and I missed them all doing their whole detective agency thing. I think Season 3 is the strongest season. To answer the question, my DVR always makes me late for stuff...once I get started watching it's hard to stop!

Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 08:49 PM EST

Yes, my DVR makes me late all the time! Evil!

On another note, I also recently watched Angel on my DVR, never having watched it the first time around. I actually kind of hated seasons 4 and 5 depite many strong episodes, but I LOVE 1-3 and plan on rewatching on DVD.

Samzmom Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

I regularly back up my DVR to the beginning of the memory buffer to catch the parts of the Today show I miss when I'm getting ready. Sometimes I forget that the time they show at the bottom of the screen isn't "real", but the time at that point in the buffer. I haven't been late for work yet, but I've had a few close calls!

Bella Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 08:08 PM EST

My last year of college FX would show Buffy at 7:00 and 8:00 (a.m.) I managed to end up with a 9:00 class one quarter, and I was late several times (though not by much, so it was okay). Not a DVR story ('cause I don't have a DVR), but still an example of TV making me late!

Dyan Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 07:55 PM EST

I was an avid Buffy watcher but not into Angel until the last 3 seasons. I live in Canada and we don't get TNT. They used to show Angel and Buffy reruns on the Space channel, but they don't anymore. Just before the holidays, I joined Zip.ca, which is the Canadian version of Netflix. I started watching Angel from the beginning and I'm so hooked! I will stay up late watching episodes. This really helped during the writers' strike!

Rebekah Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

My DVR has never made me late for work, but many times it has made me late for bed and I wake up way tired in the morning. Those taped shows on the recorded list just call my name and I can't resist.

bonash Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

I am late to work quite often due to Golden Girls reruns. Granted, I own every season on DVD, but I still love to catch it when it's on TV

EWJunkie1 Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

Yes! Although it's not the DVR that makes me late. Specifically, it's when an episode of Lost or Heroes becomes available online. I'll start watching JUST to clarify something I thought I missed or misunderstood, but then end up watching the entire ep and show up at least a half hour late. Luckily, I'm online so my boss thinks I'm working on something!

nini Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

I fully understand what you're saying. I have watched Angel and Buffy many many times throughout the years. some episodes at least 10 times or maybe more. same goes for Charmed.

Valerie Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

I had never watched Buffy, and I recently bought all 7 seasons (all at once, go figure !), so I tend to be late, these days... And it will probably go on, since I really want to catch those Angel reruns. David Boreanaz rules, love him in Bones, but he's just as awesome in Buffy. Wow...

Lynn Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

Every morning I watch an episode of Dawson's Creek on DVR. It plays every day at 5 a.m. I've totally been late for work, engrossed in the latest Joey/Pacey/Dawson drama. But, it's my guilty pleasure and totally worth it.

Jeff W. Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

I can just say that that picture of David is very unflattering as it makes him look like he has really big boobs.

drella66 Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 04:23 PM EST

OH MY GOD, all the time, Not today though as I managed to finish all of the Gauntlet III in time to be at work before 9

sje Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

ok, this has nothing to do with DVRs...I really just had to share my new love for angel. the bf and I recently bought both buffy and angel on dvd (since we were losers who totally missed out on them the first time around) and we're crazy obsessed. being late to work because of angel (or any other show in the whedonverse) is TOTALLY justified.

mscisluv Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

I don't have a DVR, but I'll definitely get engrossed in one of the morning "news" shows (Today, etc) and be way late to work...

Roon Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

I was late to work when the Indiana Jones trailer debuted on GMA. After watching it a few times on TV I had to run to the computer and watch it a few more times there. Then I just had to post it on my blog. So that meant watching it a few more times just to make sure it looked good on the blog (boy, did it ever!).

Lois Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

Man, Smile Time is one of the freakiest eps of Angel ever! Love it!!! Season 5 was brilliant, including that finale, in my opinion...

Coyote Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 03:14 PM EST

Mandi, it's like I have a twin! I must admit I never watched "Buffy" or "Angel" before. I love David B. in "Bones"; just this week I was channel surfing while getting ready in the morning. Saw "Angel" was on, watched about half the episode (didn't want to be too late for work). I set the DVR to record all episodes on HDTNT (which airs them earlier than regular TNT). Thanks sooo much for the March 18 info!

kats Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

Thanks for the heads up to the start date Mandi. I'll be giving that the old season ticket treatment on my dvr asap.

jana Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

OMG! i've been watching the TNT Angel morning repeats FOREVER!!! it's wonderful! i wasn't in to buffy but maybe 2 years ago i started watching Angel in lieu of news. started in the 5th season & loved it so much i just kept going. cuz they show 10 episodes every week (2 a day mon-fri), 5 seasons go pretty fast. still isn't anything on tv @ that time of the morning better than angel! so, mandi, i'll be joining you!

kats Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

Thanks Lauren = )

I think eventually I'm just going to have to buckle and buy the whole series for the beauty that is Logan!

Nick Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

Mandi,
Thank you for continuously supporting the Buffyverse and Whedon. YOU ROCK.
Signed,
Nick

That sounds exactly like my morning routine. I have been catching up with Angel, since I missed many episodes the first time around. If I'm not watching Angel in the morning (I skip a the Conner with Cordy storyline and anything with Fred and Westley--I am more of a Fred and Gunn fan), I most often try and watch DVR-ed shows in the a.m. and it never times out right. The most recent incident was when I decided I had to watch Medium so that I could talk about the episode with a coworker and so desperately wanted to finish it that I missed my bus.

Catherine Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

I missed my bus more time than I can remember off because I was watching Dawson's creek and it was important since I was going to discuss the last episod with my friens...Ah good times!

Elizabeth Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

My last job (the one where I got paid to screw around on ew.com all day long), I didn't get home till 11 pm, I would watch "24" in the morning before work because I had to know what happened. An interesting way to start the day.

paige Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

DVR makes me late. all. the. damn. time!

Jen Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

Oh yeah, and one of my friends lost his job because he got the first season of 24 on DVD and watched the entire thing straight through. He had never seen it and got so into it he couldn't turn it off to go to work.

maggie Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

the only shows i dvr are "anthony bourdain: no reservations" and "doctor who." more than once, i've been late to the bar i work at because i've HAD to watch the last few minutes of an episode of "doctor who"--just to see how it all ends. of course now, i'm going to add "angel" to my dvr list.

Jen Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

If I go home from work lunch time, I can't turn on the TV, or I'll be at least half an hour late getting back. The DVR also used to make me late to pick up my boyfriend from the bus stop. OOOPS.

Lauren Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

I second the sleep-deprived comment. Last August, my then-roommate purchased "Friday Night Lights," season 1 on DVD because a) it was only $20, and b) we'd heard so many great things about the show. He worked nights, which led to a lot of "just one more episode before you go to bed, Lauren" and a lot of sleepy mornings for me. Totally worth it, though.

These days, it's "The L Word" on On Demand. So fun.

And kats, congrats on discovering the glory that is "Veronica Mars." Oh, Logan Echolls/Jason Dohring, you are too yummy for words...

LMB Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

DVR doesn't make me late for work but the reruns of "Angel" certainly do. What's sad is that I've seen these episodes many times before. I just can't get enough of this show!
Be sure to watch "Smile Time" when it comes on - the best "Angel" episode of the entire series.

kats Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

Not late to work but definitely deprived of sleep. Been catching up on "Veronica Mars" season 3 by purchasing individual episodes on iTunes. Should be getting the first three disks of season 1 from netflix tomorrow and that might change the late to work thing. Why, oh why was I not aware of this show prior to becoming painfully aware of the total hottness of Jason Dohring thanks to "Moonlight"? Thankfully I can now watch all the glory of Logan Echolls on dvd = )

Snarf Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

Angel was a great (and severely underrated) series. Season 5 rocked.
I avoid watching TV in the morning so I don't get sidetracked.
