Here's what the new '90210' will look like

Mar 19, 2008, 10:59 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Television

90210_l Details of Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas' reboot of Beverly Hills, 90210 are emerging, and I'm not sure fans of the original will be happy. (Tough luck; this show's not for you.) Judging by the casting-search and character breakdowns revealed in this Variety article, it doesn't look like any of the characters from the original show (pictured) will be back, although there are a brother and sister with the last name Silver, so they could be related to Brian Austin Green's David Silver from the old show. (The Silver girl is Jewish and media-savvy — she has her own YouTube show — is she the new Andrea?)

The CW series will, like the original, center on a family (named Mills, not Walsh) with two teen siblings, a girl and a guy; only this time, the guy is more like bad-boy Dylan than wholesome Brandon, and he's also adopted — and probably African-American. In fact, the new show promises to be a little more racially diverse than the old show, though I didn't spot any Latino or Asian characters. (The show's still set in California, isn't it?)

Read the breakdown at Variety, then tell us if you think 90210 2.0 will do justice to the original, improve upon it, or go flat faster than a soda at the Peach Pit.

well I have been watching 90210 from the moment it came out and it was good enough to keep me coming back every week...but lately it is becoming more and more like One Tree Hill....the whole teen pregnancy leads to the young couple getting married, the whole older sister being the 'first' with the younger sisters boyfriend...it's like the show has run out of a real original story!

So far, I am not impressed. They did not explain that the guy with the parents and daughter was her adopted brother. I assumed he was a servant or yardboy. It was not explained until into the scene.

And don't tell me that nobody else other than Nat is working at the Peach Pit. He looks so sad now. I just wanted to reach into my TV and hug him--I know things are bad.

They wont ever be able to make a character or storyline as cool as Dylan McCay's. I always thought the drama between Dylan and Jim was great!

I still watch re-runs of the original 90210 daily on SoapNet. There is NO WAY this new 90210 will ever compare! To get some viewers, they should add more of the old cast, not just Kelly Taylor. What kind of story line will Kelly have w/o the rest of the gang? I think this new show is going to bomb simply b/c the original 90210 fans have high expectations that will not be reached

Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

I think the creaters of this "new" 90210 are crazy to to think this show will last. They need to wake up and pay attention to what everyone is saying because we're all saying the same thing, "We want a show about the original cast members and where they are today, not new cast members (especially new high-school ones). Your new idea will bomb- it will never get out of the shadow of the original. There is a reason why it lasted 10 years and people still watch the reruns! Give us what we want! New show about the original cast members and where they are today!!!!!!!

steven Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

I really wasn't in to 90210 but I loved Melrose Place. In my opinion that's the show they need to bring back.

LINA Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 10:52 PM EST

I THINK YOU SHOULD BRING ALL THE OLD CAST BACK,90210 WILL NEVER BE THE SAME WITH OUT THEM...THEY MADE THE SHOW,I LOVED 90210 I STILL WATCH IT NOW, AND JUST THE RE-RUNS ARE BETTER THAN EVER,YOU ALL SHOULD OF JUST NAMED IT SOMETHING ELSE,THE OLD SHOW ROCKED,I WILL WATCH THIS NEW ONE,BUT IT WONT LAST 10YRS JUST LIKE THE ORIGINAL ONE......

Lacy Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

All I am interested in is seeing Kelly and Dylan living a good life together. They are soul mates...no one..even Brandon can come between them now. And with Dylan and his interesting life...the show would be a hit!

Ryan Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 07:07 PM EST

They should just reboot the original. They already have Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling. Ian & Jason have expressed interest in being on it. It could be like 30something meets Sex and the city maybe? Seriously what are the rest of them doing? Except Andrea, she looks like she is going to be 50. there is no playing mid 30's for that one

Kirst Thu, May 29, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

I think if you are going to bring Jennie Garth back as Kelly, I think you should bring Jason back as an English teacher or the Newscast mentor for the kids and him and Kelly are married. I always wanted them to get married.

Its very sad to see the change that are made in something that we enjoyed so much watching... im catching up on old episodes on the soap channel but by the looks of it I think ill still watch my reruns... the new series seems to have forgoten some of the characters and topics we watched time and time again...

Joseph Wed, May 28, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

If this show is to have a chance the old characters need to play a role. It will buy time to establish the series and allow for the audience to warm up to the new crew. Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth will add to the glamour but they must add Jason and Ian. They can re-establish the past and move into the new. Luke and Shannen wow instant credibility. Good Luck i will watch to see what happens!

Danielle Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

I watched this show every single time it came on and LOVED it. I think this is going to ruin it completely, it would be like when they tried to bring Saved by the Bell back and it FLOPPED! Bad idea guys...really bad idea!

thomas Wed, May 14, 2008 at 12:54 AM EST

preferably not jason preistly!
not cuz he was bad on the original
but we all know the "curse"
if he guest apperencees on a show
with-in a few episodes its cancelled!

and just to let u know
im 18 and i beleive i fall into
the younger crowd
and i still dont think
this show stands a
chance in hell of working
without some of the original
characters!
at the same time of attracting new
veiwers
you might want to think about
bringing in some of the old ones
aswell
my mother loved this show
and now years later
so do i!
PLEASE DONT RUIN IT!!!

Thomas Wed, May 14, 2008 at 12:47 AM EST

first of all
theses people are right
you definatly need the silver kids
to have their parents be donna's and davids
second of all, the peach pit HAS to be there!WITH NAT!!!!
Now we all know that Kelly is a Guidence councellor,
but what about Dylan?
this show at least has a chance with dylan!

and steve... i guess,
i mean really
what else is ian ziering doiing
I MEAN REALLY?

Please...Please....Don't do this !
F' with Melrose Place...you will only disgrace yourself...doesn't the CW have enough crap teen shows....

Mai Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

Just make them hang out at the Peach Pit. That's all I need.

Krystle Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

There will not be any of the old characters. WHat kind of crap is that. This new 90210 will be cancelled after the first few episodes. Come one people who are fans of this show back then want to see the original cast duh. Sorry does not sound like a great series. Put the original cast and will see how it goes.

arthur Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

And I'm sorry Rob Thomas fans, but as a stand-alone concept, the characters and plot of this new version are incredibly stupid.
It feels to me they're linking themselves to 90210 to call attention to any kind of crappy show to put on the air.

You'd think Rob Thomas would do more than that - I actually thought it was somewhat cool the idea to reimagine the series in his vision. But after seeing what's his planning, the only thought crossing thru my head right now, it's that the Veronica Mars cancelation made him go insane.

arthur Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

And what's the point in calling it 90210 if there's nothing to do with the original? Really, can't they just show it with being attached to the old show?

You would've think they call Shannen Doherty or Jennie garth, or ven freakin' Tori Spelling so they have something to do with it. But no.

JoeC Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

No Shannen Doherty, I won't be there. 90210 was just another cheesy show without her.....

Bethann Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

I meant I'm the same AGE as the '90210' class. Duh!

Bethann Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 11:12 PM EST

If this does make it to air, I'll give it an episode or two. I absolutely loved the original so seeing as how none of the original cast is participating, I'd like to see this be more of an "update" than "spinoff". There is a lot that could be done with improving upon the production values of the first '90210'. But I have a feeling this will be a dim version of a shiny high school/college memory (I'm the same as as the '90210' class). I'll give it a shot, but it'll have to impress me ALOT. None of the other teen dramas that have come out since '90210', save 'Party of Five' has hooked me yet.

Kim Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 09:30 PM EST

I'm actually kind of upset that they are considering doing this. I would almost be like making a spin off of Friends or something. 90210 was a great memory of my teenage years...let's leave it at that, please. You know that any connections they try to make to the original are not going to match...they never do for those of us who are hard-core enough to know every detail of the original. I won't be watching.

Rebekah Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 08:59 PM EST

I would only watch the new version if some of the original characters return. If it goes the way this is explained, I'm out. I'm a major 90210 fan. Just finished watching the high school graduation episode on SoapNet.

Nix Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 07:43 PM EST

If it's not tied to anything in the old show, then it's a transplant of the first season of The OC, and nothing was better than the first season of The OC. Including the rest of the seasons of The OC.

SDA333 Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

Just get back to "Veronica Mars"!!! Shop it around to other networks - FX, A & E, Lifetime, Bravo, hell- even Spike! There's gotta be a network interetsed in a show with such a rabid and devoted fan base!

Snarf Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

Meh. Oh who am I kidding? Of course I'll check it out. Note to the tall foreheads at the CW, the new 90210 should be paired with "Gossip Girl"

Mike Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

Remakes=total lack of imagination. The only two words I cared about were Rob Thomas. He needs to be creating a reboot of Veronica Mars!!! Evidently, I'm not over that yet.

Nose Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Yet another childhood/teenage memory ruined. Thanks, CW.

IloveSteveSanders Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

Why? Why would they do something like this? Seriously, what's next? Remaking Dallas? Dynasty? Fantasy Island? The Facts of Life? Though...a modern remake of FOL would be kind of cool. How does one go about becoming a pitch person at CW??

Shauna Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Why is Hollywood so obsessed with remakes? Isn't it bad enough that television shows from decades past are being remade into feature-length movies? I mean, did we really need Starsky & Hutch or Bewitched? Is Dragnet going to be a runaway hit? No. Let's just remember 90210 fondly as a show we all grew up with and leave it at that. It wasn't broken, so why are people trying to fix it? Sadly, the answer seems to be that there is a major shortage of new, fresh ideas out there so people are turning to remakes and spinoffs and are trying to add their signature to it. It's just sad. Someone somewhere out there must have an original idea!

mark in nyc Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

SNL said it best this last weekend....this show has already been remade as One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, The OC, The Hills and just about any other show on the CW......when 90210 came out it was (for lack of a better word) revolutionary cause it showed teenagers with adult problems in a rich environment.
That is now every other show on tv.
That being said as long as they cast pretty actors it will be a big hit.

Cam Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

That description of the case made me way more interested than I imagined I could be. That's not saying a lot, but we'll see.

NineDaves Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

they're saying this harry mills went to beverly, not west beverly. so they can't even call this a spinoff! i swear, if they go into the peach pit (or even the peach pit after dark), and nat is like, "hey you remind me of some people i once knew," i am going to throw up. and with the new zip codes, shouldn't the new show be called BEVERLY HILLS 90210-5302?

Winona Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

How can this be labeled a "spin-off" when there aren't any real links other than the zip code? We don't have any Silver-to-Silver confirmation yet...

Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 10:35 AM EST

This will not be as good as the original. I can't believe they are remaking it already. My friends and I grew up watching 90210. It is too soon for this show to be remade and it will never be as good. It's classic 90s. That's all there is to it.

Tina Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

Well thanks for hurting my feelings. I was so hoping to see Donna and David's kid as the "Silver girl". Steven could have married an Asian woman and we could have the Asian friend. Andrea had a baby by a Latino so their kid could have been the Latino friend. Then we would have like all the races respresented:white, Black (the adoptee), Latino, Jew, Asian.

Working Girl Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

i think i just got tingly little goosebumps thinking about how freaking awesome new 90210 is going to be. if these people are "Silver"s, i want B.A.G. cameos aplenty, as well as appearances by Mel Silver, original 90210's resident DILF.
