Can Donald Glover play Obama on 'SNL'?

Categories: '30 Rock', Current Affairs, Saturday Night Live

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, 30 Rock writer Donald Glover may play the crucial role of Sen. Barack Obama on the first post-strike Saturday Night Live episode. (It was previously reported that SNL's Kenan Thompson was a lock for this; good thing that changed, considering that the very talented and funny Kenan looks and sounds nothing whatsoever like Obama.) We'll have to wait 'til this weekend to see how Glover fares, if he does indeed play the candidate. In the meantime, check out this (NSFW) web skit he did last spring and see for yourself. Does Donald Glover have what it takes to turn this late-night-comedy nation around? I know it filled me with the audacity of LOL...

I think SNL will let Donald Glover do it if they think he can pull it off. He's extremely talented. Check out Derrickcomedy.com and you'll see. Remember he wasn't trying to be Obama in the College Humor sketch. Re: SNL again, I've always seen (Derrick Comedy's) DC Pierson as a taller, less smarmy David Spade.

Is he the same guy they occasionally show on 30 Rock or does he write behind the scenes. I guess he could do Obama with a little makeup.
But I was looking at another item with Jesse Martin and was thinking he would make a good Obama. I too was another who read Danny Glover at first and was thinking - well isn't he a little too old?

Too bad they still don't have F. Mitchell around. But Toofer is a good choice.

This is awesome. I've been following derrick comedy for awhile, and it's awesome he's finally getting his due.

Yes! Donald Glover can play Obama! Donald Glover is a talented comedian and anyone who doesn't believe me, go check out Derrick Comedy. I'm happy he's on SNL; now maybe I can start watching it again.

So is Hammmond going to do McCain? Bill Hedder or Will Forte Huckabee?

Chevy Chase looked nothing like Gerald Ford. They've had three cast members play George Bush. Keenan can do as well as this guy. I thought it said Danny Glover, too.

AngKnee, black-face is horrible.
The only black-face (tan-face?) that I liked was when Darryl Hammond played Jesse Jackson.
Maybe SNL will take this opportunity to diversify its cast. SNL doesn't usually hire many minority performers. It is just a shame that Kenan and Maya have to play every black person who they don't even sound or look like. At least on MadTv, the actors kind of look like the people who they are portraying.

I thought it said Danny Glover too!

The stubbornly unfunny Canadian topical sketch show Air Farce Live blacked up a member of its all-white cast to play Obama. Blacked is an overstatement. They lightly browned him up. Not an option for SNL?

Nice! Donald is doing great with Derrick, 30 Rock, and the UCB NY scene in general. He does and AMAZING Morgan Tracy and I have no doubt his take on Obama will great!

I had to do a double take on the headline. At first I thought it said DANNY Glover.

My friend and I discussed a few months ago when The Rock was supposed to be the host.

Ever since Dwayne Johnson slimmed down, I thought he'd be a great Obama on SNL. They're both multi-racial African Americans and the tenor of their voices is strikingly similar. I used to joke that if you closed your eyes when Obama talked, it sounded like the Rock cutting a promo on Raw.

Anyway, of course the punchline to the skit would be:

"If ya smell what Barack is cookin."

i dont see the obama-ness at all. i don't think he can pull it off that well. his voice is too high. and his body and face wouldn't suit his voice if he made it deeper/richer sounding. yes, he looks more like obama than kenan (and i dont know if this would be kenan's thing to do anyway. and i think kenan isn't used correctly on snl. he really is talented and i think he's given poor material most times), but...eh. i'll watch, for sure, so i guess we'll have to find out. that sketch wasn't too funny though.

I am not sure if awesome is really what I mean...but this is darned near perfect. Thanks for making me laugh.
