Snap judgment: Smashing Pumpkins' new 'Superchrist' video

So the Smashing Pumpkins just debuted a new video for the studio version of "Superchrist" on MySpaceTV, and yes, I am filing this item under 'The Eh List' category.

I'm not saying it's a bad song. Even the totally out-of-place violin bridge sorta fits, à la Wim Wenders, with the angel wandering forlornly around the set — but what's up with the leering bass player and the scantily clad nurse quartet? It's as if Billy & Co. decided in the middle of filming that they needed some visual Viagra to counterbalance all that dude hair.

I loved the Pumpkins back in the day, even when MTV tested my patience by playing "Today" to death (experience a flashback after the jump). But does the "Superchrist" video mark a return to form for the Pumpkins? Who else misses D'arcy and James Iha? And speaking of hair, Billy Corgan with some?

This is way better in concert.. I also don't mind the film clip, especially the single shot style.. This is used on a number of my favourite tv shows like BSG.

If you don't believe me, check it out for yourself:

Apparently it is very hard to please people these days. Take a look at the video for Tonight, Tonight, back then people were calling him a genius.

Remember, Billy and Jimmy played all the instruments on every album, minus "adore", witch had multiple drummers. They are The Smashing Pumpkins. The other members are fitting in nicely and the new stuff jams. Jimmy rocks the kit like no other!!!

This isn't a smashing Pumpkins reunion; it is a smashing Pumpkins reboot. The original lineup was Corgan, Chamberlain, Iha and D'Arcy. Last time I checked those last two were AWOL.
There are TOO MANY bands who are reforming without original members: from Styx to Journey to Blind Melon to Queen to INXS...the list goes on and on. who wants to hear or see a band that is not the original members?
I loved Smashing Pumpkins back in their heyday. "Today?" Not so much.

I have to ask, Why make a bad video for a mediocre song? If they really want to showcase the song, they should use live concert footage. They never should have made a studio version. The Old dude in the video is obviously not playing the song, the nurses and the angel do absolutely nothing for the video, and the few lyrics are almost unintelligible. All in all, this doesn't even come close to my "Eh" list. In fact, it's a lot closer to my "Zzzzz" list.

Further proof that talent isn't a infinate well that one can draw on. Simease Dream remains their best work IMHO.

You have to remember that this song is only currently going to appear on a free compilation at Guitar Centers around the country. It's not on any proper album and was done simply because it's a live fan favorite (when a lot more jamming is present.) The song is okay, but seriously shouldn't be judged as a proper release. It's more of a random side-project type thing.

Your better off posting the video to "That's the Way (My Love Is)" from their latest album Zeitgeist to showcase the bands true return.
