'Idol' Watch: The many (MANY) songs of David Archuleta

Feb 13, 2008, 11:34 AM | by Adam B. Vary

Categories: American Idol, Reality TV

Anyone watching last night's American Idol -- anyone with a beating heart, anyway -- had their knee socks charmed right off after watching 16-year-old David Archuleta adorably sing his way through Bryan Adams' "Heaven." Granted, he hasn't quite pulled out the vocal fireworks that several of the other semi-finalists have during Hollywood Week, but can any of them claim to have torn the roof off of "And I Am Telling You" in front of Kelly Clarkson herself? No joke; check the clip below:

And that's not even scratching the surface -- after the jump, we'll dive into the rather overwhelming amount of YouTubage on this freakily talented kid...

There are still some clips floating about the internets of Archuleta's tenure on the 2003 reboot of Star Search, where he won the Junior Singers competition. While it's all really impressive for a 12-year-old, his take on Alicia Keys' "Falling" rates pretty high on the Do You Really Know What You're Singing? scale of Makes Me Uncomfortable, and the shot of his parents mouthing the words along with him just makes it worse:

Much more impressive, though, is Archuleta's sweet and subtle take on John Lennon's "Imagine":

Oh, and Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles":

And the Christmas perennial "O Holy Night":

You get the idea. We'll see tonight whether all this, er, practice was enough for David to make it to the Top 24 -- oh, who are we kidding, of course he makes it to the top 24 -- but, is it just me, or do you get the feeling there's a VHS tape stashed in the Archuleta family attic of a sonogram of David singing "Broken Wings" in his mother's womb?

Conched Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

AI is so rigged and this "kid" is such a flaming poser that takes timeless songs and ruins them. AI and the judges should be ashamed of themselves for rigging the competition for this sorry excuse for a cruise singer. Elvis is rolling in his grave right now and so is every other singer that DA has butchered and placed his "baby elmo" dazed look on. Shame on all of you!!!!

DAVID ARCHOLETA SAVED MY LIFE!
I have been in a deepening depression lately overwhelmed by alot of things in my life. I had thought seriously about suicide. I saw David perform "Angels" and I began crying uncontrolably. I saw the interview about the song and I realised how precious every moment is. David is so right saying "despite what happens in your life, theres always a light at the end of the tunnel" I made a CD of all his music and listen to "Angels" when I pray. I feel cleansed and people say I look and sound alot better. The world needs to listen to his angelic message NOW! I want to meet David and thank him in person.
Thank God for David an angelic messenger of Gods love.

This young lad is incredible.I felt that
I knew him for a long time after I watched all his video on YOU TUBE. His
wonderful voice had so much power to
awaken your emotion. He is Godsend blessed with this awesome gift to share and inspire us.

Karen Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

Oh, by the way, I am a completely besotted David Archuleta fan. I love his soaring, powerful, emotive vocals, his sweet, humble personality, and that WAY cute face!

I am convinced he'll win Idol, and I will be voting my fingers off to see that his dream comes true! Please help me make it happen for him, people!

I listened to David sing the Christmas songs, "Angels", "I'll Be", and other songs on YouTube. After that, I decided if there was beauty like THAT out there and I wasn't listening, I was foolish and missing out. But, no longer! He has me listening to popular music for the first time in WELL OVER 20 YEARS. And, I'm loving it! Thank you, David!

All the best to this incredible young man!

Karen Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

I am reading this article late so I doubt that anyone will read my comments, but I HAD to reply to the bigot, Silas Marner, because of all the bullsh*t he is spreading about.

I was Methodist as a child, became a Lutheran as a youth, and have now been LDS for 36 years. My love and understanding of Christ haven't changed. The only difference is that my love for God and my commitment to living a Christlike life have deepened profoundly.

To say that I and those of us who are Mormon are not Christian is blasphemy to me. Silas puts himself in the place of God. In the Old Testament God says that man looks on the outward man, but God sees the heart. God KNOWS I am Christian.

This Silas is a jackal, preying on goodhearted people who for the most part won't respond to such absurd and hateful claims.

As for the claim that we have gone around destroying cultures. Give me a break! We are all for people retaining their culture. We love and appreciate our differences while sharing the love of Christ.

Here is one PERFECT EXAMPLE that Silas is clueless. Back in the 1960s, BYU-Hawaii decided to do a fund-raiser. Most of the students were Hawaiian, Tongan, Samoan, from Fiji, New Zealand and other South Sea islands. They were taught their native dances by older members of the Church from those lands. It worked out great, and they kept doing it with the Church paying the students for dancing. There was a period of time when it wasn't working well financially because the school is located on the far side of the island away from Honolulu and they contemplated closing the center. But, the leaders of the Church believed in what they were doing there and decided to keep it going.

It has become the Polynesian Cultural Center, the largest drawing tourist location in Hawaii. I read nearly 10 years ago that 28,000 kids from these poor islands had been able to work their way through college by learning their native dances. The Church has also built typical villages from each of these areas so the students and tourists can see what things were like in these country in former days. They've even had the students build boats the traditional way with an adz and other primitive tools and materials.

Can you imagine being so poor your family lives in a hut with dirt floors? You get to go to good schools because the Church has Liahona High School and others on islands where education is poor. You do well in high school, and even though your family is poor, you can go to BYU-Hawaii. Learning native dancing or working in the PCC pays your way. The Church has set it up so that unless you are from the area or from Asia, you can't graduate from BYU-Hawaii. So, the school isn't swamped with Caucasians from the mainland who'd love to go to school in Hawaii. The campus is the most diverse ethnically in the entire United States.

Does it sound like we're destroying cultures or strengthening them? Silas is an idiot!

I'm sorry if I'm comng across poorly but it really riles me when people out-and-out lie about something so wonderful. Becoming a member of the Church was the BEST decision I ever made in my life. It has brought me deep happiness and peace. I am privileged to be able to associate with the incredible people (like David A.) in the Church and I am very offended to have hateful, snarky comments made about our Chruch.

Thank you for bearing with me during my little TRUTHFUL tirade.

When I seen you come out on the stage for the first time I thought bless his heart he's so young, and right then you started to sing, and I almost fell off the couch. You are definetly without a second thought the top singer in this competion, and as you get older I can only imagine where your talents will take you, Hey there is your next song I CAN ONLY IMAGINE. Keep your beautiful smile.

I think that David is a fantastic singer, and I'm hoping he'll win for sure! It's awesome to see a singer who has a great voice and is actually humble about it.
However, on the last comment about religion, I have to disagree. Mormonism is not the same as Christianity; just because the name "Jesus Christ" is in the title does not mean that it is Christian. Christians believe that God sent his son Jesus Christ to redeem mankind, if they accept His forgiveness, and that we humans cannot ever ever earn our way to heaven, it is by God's grace alone (see Ephesians 2:8-9). Mormons instead believe that our good works on earth can earn us salvation. This is not the only crucial difference, there are several others. But I don't want to have a long theolgical discussion here. However, it remains unchanged that regardless of David's religion not being Christian, he is still a humble guy who no doubt has a very sweet spirit, and I wish him the best of luck.

leroy Sat, Mar 29, 2008 at 09:03 PM EST

to "true fan":
a Christian "so to speak"? hello, look at the name!
CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS

and i quote "Jesus Christ"

never say something about someone's religion/denomination unless you know at least a little bit of what you're talking about. Ignorance is what kills us all.

Lydia and Jerry Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

David is our favorite. He takes any criticism with a smile. He is a class act for his age. His talent is unbelievable!! We truly believe he will win.

Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

A True Fan
David is a very talented singer. I can't believe someone had the nerve to compared him to Melinda Doolittle, she wasn't shy at all, maybe a little humble but she carried it to far for someone her age. She was quite a bit older than him for one thing and another thing, he is 16 years old, a Christian (so to speak) and definitely very humble. That is what humble looks like. Give the kid a break. I love David's beautiful mature voice. It is a blessing and a gift from God, no doubt.
Actually someone also said that David sings the songs the way they were meant to be sung and that's not quite correct. He actually puts a slight spin on his rendition and that's what makes him so awesome.

I am getting so sick of people like Silas Marner who critize my religion. It is Davids too. I suggest that you find out what you are talking about before you put your foot in your mouth. Mine and David's religion is known for providing food and clothing all around the world. We have good moral structure here and this is what you see in David. So He is a latter day Saint and he lives it everyday, which not too many religions can say that their members do. David goes to church on all Sundays and not just on Easter or Christmas. He holds the priesthood and honors it. I am so disappointed that you can not learn of what this religion is about, best to speak to the missionaries. Give me your address and I will send them your way. If you don't then I will know you don't want to know the truth of this wonderful religion. And no we are not a cult. We are christians like you are.

No wonder Silas Marner has such a creepy name...Where do you come off with comments about David or Brooke's religion?? What does that have to do with their talent. Plus you should check your sources before you show your ignorance. What ever you described has nothing to do with any Mormons I have ever known or anything I have ever read about them. Keep your bigotry to yourself

Patti Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 08:56 AM EST

I couldn't agreed more than what Ed had to say about David Archuleta on 02/28, I think that he is gifted and sweet, inocent, charming, plus he looks like my son when he was that age now he is twenty and in the Military
USCG. I wish David the best... He is our next American Idol.

aurora sandoval Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

David is one of a kind young man with a golden voice and i can guarantee you he will be an American next Idol this season and me and my husband Philip can't wait every Tuesday for him to sing. When he sang Imagine that was the best song ever.Good Luck David and please always pick the wright song every time you are in front of the millions of people watching you.

Silas Marner Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 07:33 AM EST

He's a pretty good singer, as is Brooke White, but we can't but help be disappointed by the fact they are Mormon. This group is responsible for the destruction of indigenous languages and cultures worldwide, and very much want the United States to become a theocracy. It doesn't diminish the talent of the singers, but the indoctrination called "Mormonism" is undeniable.

vickie haring Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 11:23 PM EST

Oh My God... I cannot wait to see what this young man will bring the world from his gifted voice. I just listened to his songs on the web and it sent chills over my whole being... what a wonderfull and talented young man he is. He will be the next American Idol because he deserves to be.

Ed Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

I'm a musician/songwriter and have seen and performed with some of the industry's finest. This kid David Archuleta is something different. We are taught how to perform, deliver and interpret music and lyrics. We see awesome performers on American Idol, Star Search and new artists all the time - they all are great performers. But this kid David is not a performer. He is something else. His rendition of "Imagine" was a wake up message. David seems to blessed with true delivery skills and for that brief one minute we weren't watching a performance but rather a delivery of a message. It gave me chills, renewed hope, instilled vision and faith in us as people. David Archuleta represents all that is truly good and sincere. I don't think he is aware of just how truly different and amazing he is. He's gifted with more than talent. I hope fame, pride & money does not spoil him. I hope he can stay balanced through this. If he can, folks - we are watching a true legend in the making - guaranteed!

Lenna Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 09:33 PM EST

I totally LOVE this kid, he is totally awesome. I don't get tired of hearing him sing over and over. His voice is just so catchy, he is very talented. As a singer myself at 17, I believe he has an amazing talent, it's a gift and he should use it, and not forget it was given to him for a good purpose, always remember God, He's the only one that can help you througout your career, because you definitely have something going for your life. God bless you David A. You ROCK!!! p.s. my quote: "Don't let the little things in life take over the most important thing...God"

Sam Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

His parent's should be incredibly proud and even if he couldn't sing like the angel he is- he seems so sweet and down to earth.
PRAY that the Hollywood/New York VULTURES never change that about him.
Thankfully, I doubt his parent's are from the same double-wide as Brittney's or the spoiled rotten/evil world of Paris and Nicole or that Davis punk. (the alcoholic that went on and on about Lindsay's fire crotch- disgusting what money can do)
Keep it up and you ARE the AI 7- WINNER.
(That's why they couldn't keep Josiah though- can't have 2 ringers in the competition. All the other contestants should just pack it in now and start on their non-existing future musical careers)

That's my opinion- and if you need a male 30-something knowledgeable and proficient stylist-expert- gimme a call Mr. and Mrs. Archuleta. (or David!) =)

By the way- what is David's heritage? Italian? Mexican? both? Adorable- that's all that matters really! =)

Denise Urksa Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

Joyce Morris Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 02:34 AM EST

Ya know, I was asleep during the two previous performances... nothing against the contestants, I was just tired! But when I heard David Archuleta's rendition of "Imagine," I bolted wide awake! It woke me straight out of a sound sleep and I'm glad it did. I was also very moved... yes to some tears by his astounding performance. I loved Lennon and played the original version till it wore out... so that's quite a conpliment coming from this old 52 year old lady! He's most definetely my pick.

Katarina Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

David is awesome!! He has an amazing voice!

There is always someone out there who just cannot accept an amazing voice, talent and just wholesome personality which sets an example for our kids. Keruss comments were simply sad !

italianguy Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

I am a 44 year old man and was moved by David's performance last night. I have watched Idol since season 1 and love the show, but this kid just blew me away. And, yes, a few tears were inevitable. Really incredible - he's going to have an amazing career.

keruss Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

I don't like him. He is an overated arrogant pain in the neck. I much rather see the other 2 Davids or Danny win. We need to get rid of him and the other plants this season.

Nancy Farrell Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

ILOVE DAVID,HE IS THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN ON IDOL.KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.

Lisa K Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 08:00 AM EST

I'm speechless! Amazing talent. I remember seeing him on Star Search years back and loved him then. A true natural that captivates and moves me. I'd love to hear him sing Seal's Love's Divine. David, if you happen to read this please consider it. Your already an American Idol !!!

Lacy Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 02:47 AM EST

This kid is the most amazing talent i have ever seen in my 41yrs of life. He moves me like no other. My husband of 60 yrs was absolutely moved to tears and unable to speak through his rediition on " Imagine" WoW is all i have to say. Hands down he has this competition. Its kind of a shame that AI will be on his coat tails for years to come. He could make it on his own no problem. Love you David, keep it up, and i will be first in line to buy your CD's

k.. I'm 38 - technically 'over-the-hill' for any pop.. and this kid inspires me. I got chill bumps and teary watching him sing 'Imagine' on Idol tonight. I've only continued watching my very first season of Idol cause of this kid! He's waaaaaay better than the others. I hope he wins!

Emily Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

Wow, he is amazing in all his videos. Plus add the fact that he's an amazing piano player and good-looking, too? American Idol is completely rigged if David doesn't win this thing.

Tim West Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 04:21 AM EST

I am a huge fan. I have listened to the "heaven" clip many times and there is just something about this kid. I am sold.

Gina from Long Island Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

All you can say is WOW!!!!I just listened to him singing O Holy Night on popwatch and boy oh boy. That's all I can say. If he doesn't win.......

mims616 Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

I love this kid. He is pleasant, cute and boy does he have a voice for a 16yr old. Just like Jordan Spark who has a great and powerful voice, it's time America recognizes the younger generations. Like Simon said, if you got it, you got it. so who cares if you are young if you got it.

xoSTEPHxo Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 10:53 PM EST

I love David sooooooo much. As a 16 year old girl I'm sure thats expected, but I don't like him just for his looks, he is an amazingly talented singer and american idol will take him very very far!!

I <3 you David, you have my vote !! =D

Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

TORRI Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

WOW! IM IN LOVE WITH THIS GUY EVEN THOUGH HE IS YOUNG MAN CAN HE SING HIS HEART OUT! DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE U DAVID(DAVEY)

janet Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

david is a winner. our young people need someone too look and follow that is polite, clean cut and cute. I for one have had enough of the over body exposure, bad language, and same old music.
David is fresh and what we all need to get back to some of the good things in life we need. besides he seem to be the only one on last night that really wanted to win. T he rest were kareoke performances. What's wrong with being young and happy. He may be good for the future of music.

Mary Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

I heard this young very talented young man on Idol & then listened to his songs on the web. I was just breathless. He is so very talented & to see him also play the panio was very impressive. He is awesome & very blessed with talent. He is a winner, no matter what. But I will vote for him on idol. He is what AMERICAN TEENS need to follow as an AMERICAN IDOL!!!!He is a great example to other teens.
He surely has awesome parents, who taught him well.Clean cut, very nice looking, good morals & great teaching from home.

brenda viera Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 12:23 AM EST

robbie Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 09:57 PM EST

I had Daivd picked before knowing anything about him. I thought he was incredible...Simon Fuller should go ahead and sign this kid...! Wow!!!

sadae moore Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

he is a great singer and ihope he win american idol ...

Sam Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

David is definitely my fav to win. His performance of 'Heaven' was incredible. (Anyone noticed the back-up singer crying in the background?)Simon said it all during hollywood week, he's good looking, he can sing, and overall, he's just in a good place right now.

Redtint Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

Wow, this kid really is terrific. And he can play the piano too! Another Alicia Keyes, people.

Gwen Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 09:46 AM EST

...I mean, does he really, really want to do this for the rest of his life, or is this what his parents really want? He's old enough to make that choice...uh...NOW!

Gwen Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

Great voice. Nothing but good things for this kid. My only hope is that - since he's been doing this so long - that he stays in love with singing.

makcyber Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 03:57 AM EST

huh, i love him. he is so adorable and likeable. he's cool and so so grown up like an adult. didn't show any sign of stress and sing his heart out. cool really coool.

makcyber Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 03:57 AM EST

Did i mention he is so cute!

Amecia Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 01:00 AM EST

I love this dude he is really good. He's probably going to make it to the very end. Keep up the good work!

James Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 12:32 AM EST

Yeah, he's talented and the prime voting demographic will be swooning, but doesn't it seem unfair to the masses who've auditioned to have so many of the Top 24 being pimped to no end? If I was one of the 4 who have received NO airtime, I'd be ripped!!

Keith Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 12:30 AM EST

I'm just glad somebody did their research. I looked several of the finalists up on Youtube. At this point, you have to assume they've all been recorded singing. I came across these same videos. Archuleta's performances on AI so far haven't even skimmed the surface of what he is capable of. If he can approach what he reaches on these videos, the title is his. But my question is, has the paralysis damaged his voice? It is still amazing, but different. I sense a great story behind this. He seemed to have more range before. Is this simply the story of a boy's voice changing to a man's or was damage done? Was he pushed to hard by his parents as "child prodigy"? Or has he now become a deeper, richer singer capable of maturity beyond his years? Whatever the case, he is my fave to win.

kathykat Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 07:07 PM EST

I loved him instantly! He has a great voice, good looks and an endearing personality. Real idol material. I hope he makes it to the top 3.

Adriana Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

He is my favorite already and he is so cute.

Huge Idol Fan Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 05:41 PM EST

I love David. He has a gorgeous voice, seems genuinely nice and I think he'll go far.

Dion Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

I say Kudo's to David, he is young, clean cut, handsome and wholesome. He is a very talented young man who probably will surprise everyone in the end. This year will be very interesting to say the least.

Liz Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

I just love him , he sings great..may he make it all the way and become our next idol.....

keoki Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

I say that he does good and make it to the top 3. He may even win this. this is an early prediction. I know I will vote for him. He is young, He has a chance to grow in the industry and will get better. So, if he does not win the title. I know that he would get a record contract deal. American Idol will do a lot for him and it's promotion to boost his singing carrer...

Hey Sari Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 08:01 AM EST

To a degree you are right. But some songs are even better when they're tweaked by another artist. I do hate when singers put too many runs in songs, sounds stupid. But don't knock artists for putting their own spin on a song. Heck, artists do it with their own tunes all the times. Imagine singing a song the same exact way over and over and over and over over and over... you get my drift?
That aside, this kid deserves a recording contract.

OMG!!!!! YOUR SO HANDSOME!!!

Brainiac Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

Uh......did nobody notice his awful breathing technique? It irritated me to death. Is it too much to ask for a singer to not gasp every three seconds?

Thad Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 09:33 PM EST

Clay Aiken with better skin

Nix Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

He's adorable. But "And I Am Telling You?" At that age? "You're the best man/ I've ever known?"

Still, a Josh Groban crooner in the making. There's a place for big voices (though I tend to look for those mumbly crumbly bard types.)

Mellie Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

Wow. Jaw...dropped..on...floor. Prodigy is right.

This will be an interesting season, to say the least!

jason Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

lil dave is the shiznit. i love him, and have a feeling he'll be winner or runner-up. you heard it here.

Stephanie T. Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

Three Davids are in the 24:

Cook
Archuleta
Hernandez

Jeff Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 05:01 PM EST

Love him!

If he does not make the top 12 then there has been a crime!

Cracker Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

Singing songs "how they're written" is called Karaoke. Making a song your own is what a talented person does when forced to sing a song they didn't write.

I agree, when singing the National Anthem it's a bit much, but in a competetion when you want to stand out... don't do a Bryan Adams impression unless you're ready to go home.

Amber Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

I agree with Sari, I hate when people try to alter every single note within one song...just sing it how it's written for crying out loud. David does a fabulous job of it and he's very talented and entertaining.

Broadway Baby Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

How many Davids ended up in the final 50 because I am getting somewhat confused. I think you'll have to assign them all a number or something. And Amen Sari!

sari Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

The best thing about him is he sings the songs how they are written. I hate hate hate when people change the tune of the song by holding out notes or going faster/slower. The best example is obviously the National Anthem. But SOOOOOO many of the American Idol peeps did it yesterday. ugh. Especially that girl who did the Doors song and slowed down the "Come on baby light my fire" part. AH stop the madness.

Matt Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

No one finds him a little affected? And a little creepy in that Star Search clip? He's, like, 11, and doing that whole fake growl thing through "Fallin'." Really good as an older kid, though, when he's not forcing that silly growling. I'll look forward to seeing him on Idol this season - he'll surely make the top 12, I'd think.

mscisluv Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

I really enjoyed his performance last night, but in that clip he sounds like a girl. As in, I thought for a second that Kelly was singing.

QueenC Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

Call me a cynic, but his constant smile kinda creeps me out. I'm definitely impressed by his talent, but I can't get over the smiling and the Thank You's. He's got Melinda Doolittle syndrome.

Stephanie T. Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

Michael Johns looks as if Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords) and Freddie Mercury were combined to form one person. He sings well, but a little too well.

Carly can't hit the high notes but is acceptable.

Danny and Kyle both are Broadway singers. I already found out that Danny made it to the 24 but he is going to have the same problem as Lisa, that girl who was in the Lion King from season 6. The vocal does
not scream recording artist.

Amanda also made it to the 24 and I just hope that the viewers out there will get the message that there is a huge difference between pop 40 and rock. My guess is that she will be given a Pink song to sing.

AI Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

What is most annoying is that FOR SURE the judges have all the background info on all these characters, and have a major leg up on the viewers in that respect. Ones with backgrounds like Johns, Carly, and David always make it to voting rounds.

Nick'd Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 12:10 PM EST

Assign him an 866 number and hand me cell phone.

CMU Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

What an amazing talent. I expect big things.

KG Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

holy cow.
i liked him on AI bec of his personality and nice tone. but he didn't impress me as much as the irish girl and the australian guy did (even the guy that lived in his car that cries a lot).
but wow. impressive, that clip. and yes even in front of ms. kelly clarkson herself. even tamyra was groovin' at the end hee...

Sally Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

This young man is ready for the big time. Good move to audition for AI. Talk about confidence? He's got it in spades.
