Trailer Blazer: 'The Happening,' 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall,' 'Where in the World Is Osama bin Laden?'

Kristenbell_l The Happening (June 13). Say this for M. Night Shyamalan: he makes terrific teasers. This one taps nicely into post-9/11 dread: It's a beautiful day; suddenly, people start dropping dead; and pretty soon they're evacuating New York. Very scary! Don't know if the rest of the movie can live up to it — if Mark Wahlberg's square jaw can save the East Coast from unspecified catastrophe, or if Zooey Deschanel can deliver line readings without irony — but this little clip is certainly promising.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (April 18). Eh, I'm starting to get Apatow fatigue. This one looks like so many other films from Judd's comedy clique: same players (Jason Segel, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd), same sexual embarrassment, same elusive shiksa goddess fetish (here, the blonde hottie is Kristen Bell, pictured with Segel). I'm worried that this revealing trailer (and I do mean revealing; it's pretty NSFW and shows a lot more of Segel than you may want to see) spoils all the best jokes, just as it spoils pretty much the entire plot: Nice schlemiel (Segel, who also wrote the film) gets dumped (by Bell), goes on Hawaiian vacation to forget his ex but keeps running into her anyway, and meets a nice gal (That '70s Show's Mila Kunis) who could and should turn his head. Still, I'm sure Ben Stiller is kicking himself that he's not in this movie.

Where in the World Is Osama bin Laden? (Spring 2008). There's only one joke in this trailer — and maybe in the whole movie, I fear — but it's a good one: Super Size Me director Morgan Spurlock's Indiana Jones-meets-Michael Moore quest to locate the Al Qaeda leader whom President Bush seems to have lost interest in finding and bringing to justice. "If i've learned anything from big-budget action movies, it's that complicated global problems are best solved by one lonely guy." Heh-heh, good one, Spurlock! Betcha didn't find him, though, didja?

"The Happening": Taken off the website, so I wouldn't know, but maybe it'll be good. I always love a good comeback story.

"Forgetting"- This might be the first Apatow crew trailer where I had to strain for laughs; even the non-red band trailers for "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" had a few good laughs in it. But it'll probably be better than some of the trash in theaters right now.

"Osama Bin Laden"- Looks pretty silly, but possibly informative and a lot of fun, just like "Super Size Me". But I have that inkling that The Weinstein Company is going to screw up again.

Anchorman commentary, rather. I forget to proof.

Kristen Bell also has great comic timing, so I'm glad she's getting a chance to showcase it on the big screen.

Someone sounds kind of jealous of The Rudd. Is it his classic good looks? His perfect comic timing? His inability to be bad in anything ever?

I haven't heard the Anchorman comedy, but I've seen him interviews enough to know that he has a very wry sense of humor. Anyway, I love him. Can you tell?

Your comments about Forgetting Sarah Marshall are, as always, spot on. However, it's nice to see "Dietrich" from "Barney Miller." Where's he been all these years?

Drives me nuts when they take the videos off the website.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall & Where..Osama bin Laden look like fun, though.

Whatever! I LOVE Paul Rudd, always have. And Jason Segel is so wonderful on How I Met Your Mother that he's never stale. Also, hello, Veronica Mars is in this flick. It's a must-see for me. I'm not sick of Apatow yet since the formula's actually FUNNY so far and the players are so charming.

Hm, well I really enjoyed Jason Segel's butt. It's cute! And he does play dumped-upon well.

You heard it here first folks "The Happening" will be retitled to "The Non-happening" if M Night's new flick doesn't deliver.

I'm excited for M. Night Syamalan's "The Happening". I'm a big fan of his work, but I can readily admit that he's kind of crawled up his own a$$ with the writing in his last couple of movies. Still, he's a terrific director, and I'm excited to see what he does with a large-scale thriller. It's a shame that, even if "Happening" delivers, he appears to have almost all of his goodwill after "The Village" and "Lady in the Water."

Also, Ep, everything you said, I personally apply to Jonah Hill (and, in the non-comedy category, to Josh Hartnett). I loved Rudd in "Clueless" and thought he had some funny moments in "Knocked Up", but it really does feel like he (and the rest of the Apatow) crew are getting a bit lazy. Seems like they're content to show up, play slight variations of their established screen personas, throw in creative curse words and cash the checks.

KRISTEN. BELL.
yesssssss.

Heroes sucked this year, so my KBell crave has not been fed.

I'm sick of Paul Rudd. He's not very funny, and I can't understand why he's famous. What movie made him a breakout star? At best, he's competent. But to hear his whiney b-tch fight with Andy Ricther during the commentary track of Ron Burgundy is to understand Rudd for the egotistical nobody he really is.

He had a few okay moments as the plucky chump friend in 40 Y/o Virgin, but that was him at his best and that's saying something. The rest of the movie was hilarious, Rudd was at best kind of funny.

His recent role in Eva Longoria's unfunny new movie is more proof of Rudd's inability to carry a comedy. Apatow's okay, but with one of the Wilson's trying to kill himself and Stiller making his umpteenth lame psuedo-romantic-psuedo-comedy, it's time to infuse the slacker pack with some fresh blood.
