Which ad do you hate more: Charmin or Cottonelle?

Feb 25, 2008, 11:55 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Advertising, Animals, Animation, Hell to the no!

Those Charmin bears have been the bane of my existence for ages, wiping their backsides with abandon in plain view of the cameras, shaking their tailfeathers against trees like exotic dancers working the pole of a low-rent strip club. To make matters worse, Charmin has taken to using a deeply disturbing visual -- the "sullied hand" graphic -- to show their bathroom tissue is stronger and more absorbent than its leading competitors. "Best for bear bottoms?" Heinous!

Not to be outdone, competitor Cottonelle is running a new ad where a puppy roams the streets commenting on the dubious conditions of various human hind ends, while a voiceover declares "the world can be tough on bottoms." (Seriously?) The clip ends with said canine finding sweet relief on a beanbag, while a Cottonelle package appears on the right of the screen, showing the pooch's pooper swathed in Cottonelle’s comforting T.P.

I know none of you are going to try to tell me you love these ads, so the better question is, which do you loathe more? Vote now!

cm1958 Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

I thing voting on toilet paper ads is worse than the ads themselves.

johan Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 07:28 PM EST

CHARMIN - who wants to even think about hair on bottoms with loo paper little balls remaining in the hair. Those bears are the worst ever, PLEASE please paper is paper, if people would do a butt manicure, there would not be any jungle balls........

red Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

I HATE the Charmin commercials... those bears are almost as annoying as the Sunggle bear!

timewaster Wed, Mar 26, 2008 at 06:32 AM EST

That Cottonelle ad is so annoying I had to Google it to see if I was the only one it bothered! I've skipped some news items I was interested in because I couldn't listen to that awful voice again (and no, it won't make me "remember" that brand the next time I'm burying TP, as I use recycled).

SnargFloff Sun, Mar 23, 2008 at 02:10 AM EST

I hate both series of ads, but the Cottonelle ad in particular. I find the part where the puppy is telling the guy to watch out before he sits on the front of a car, because the hood could be hot. Of all the cars they could have chosen for the commercial, they picked a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, which has the engine in the REAR.

lynn Wed, Mar 5, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

Just saw Cottonelle advertising all over Grand Central Station. That puppy is so cute!

Eliza Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 09:45 PM EST

Wow, I never knew Zach Braff was the puppy voice... is he that hard up for money? heh. Of course now that I listen to it, I can't believe I didn't recognize his voice. Great, now I'm going to picture Zach Braff talking about bottoms whenever I see that commercial.

Emily Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

THE BEARS. I hate those obnoxious bears.

Tonya Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

I feel so much better about myself now. I stopped buying the Charmin years ago, because of these ads and couldn't believe I was that easily swayed by advertising. Thank you, popwatch readers, for giving me back my self esteem.

Helen Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 06:27 AM EST

These Charmin & Cottonelle commercials barely register on my "Hell to the No!" commercial radar.

The ONE commercial (and its evil spawn) I would LOVE to see kicked to the curb are the ones for "FreeCreditReport.com" - with the singing dude and his various ditties about how his credit is whacked.

Not only are the commercials annoying, they are misleading. The only place to get a truly free copy of your credit report is "AnnualCreditReport.com."

I'm tired of lots of "personal" product ads Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 11:35 PM EST

Two more entries in the world of genital television commercials

Janet Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 10:30 PM EST

There must be something seriously wrong with me. I LOVE the Cottenelle puppy! Love him, love him. And his voice - never knew it was Zach Braff! What's wrong with a cute puppy running around and then curling up adorably on a lap? I think you people are kinda sicko to be reading in!
Seriously, I do love the commercial but regularly get so irritated by other commercials that I turn them off. It hasn't been on for a long time now, but Verizon's "Can you hear me now?" made me crazy. I do like their new ones, with the crowd of helpers and they are funnier. Anything that is highly repetiteve gets on my nerves - like the "Tom's Price" furniture store spot - but that may just be local.

CHARMIN CHARMIN CHARMIN!!!! There's nothing cute about butt wiping!

Stephanie T. Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

The All Bran commercial with the construction worker is the grossest product commercial to date.

Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

These aren't any worse than the feminine product commercials with the blue liquid. Gross!

Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

They're both gross, but the one with the toothpaste that's supposed to represent doody is by far the worst.

dma69 Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

Even though Zach Braff is the puppy voice, I'll take cute puppies over cartoon bears.

Stephanie T. Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

Bear Bottom. I finally got it, but it's STILL not funny.

canuck1975 Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

I detest those bears. Hate them. But, the dog is annoying too.

To pick one though, I have to say that "life can be hard for bottoms" redeems Cottonelle... if only because I'm gay and hearing that line on TV makes me burst out laughing. Every. Single. Time.

CMU Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 11:31 PM EST

Ughhhhh. Both make me uncomfortable! Saying "wipe" on TV is awkward. Down with both of them!

Jen Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 10:50 PM EST

Thanx Pede. I'm back from the bar and glad someone understands me. Besides/my woodchuck/ guiness half/half and over weight chiwawa.

pede Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

Right there with ya Jen. Now if only Hollywood would do it...

Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 07:22 PM EST

It's Zach Braff. I've watched enough scrubs to know!

blaire Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

I hate them but snicker every time I hear them say "the world is tough on bottoms"

Jen Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

Honestly, I hope the lil puppy gets run over by a truck soon. It could work in the commercial. He just has to follow the toilet paper roll out to the road and SPLAT.

Raven_Moon Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

I hate them both! I'm glad to finally know I'm not the only one. I may loathe the Charmin one a bit more, though. But, to me the Cottonelle one is hurting Zach Braff's cred.

And to mscisluv: It sounds just like him (Braff), also he has discussed this on his blog.

mscisluv Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

The puppy still doesn't sound like Zach Braff to me - how does everyone know it's him?

a Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

gawd! I thought I was the only one who hated the Charmin bears. do we really need the implied visual of a bear (ha) butt being wiped? ugh. And I'm glad someone mentioned the Angel Soft commercials - those are COMPLETELY annoying (for totally different reasons) every time the two angels start to cackle I want to knock their heads together.

nay-lo Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

Someone beat me to it, but I don't really mind these commercials so much. The one that REALLY creeps me out is the Airwick commercial with the Elephant married to the Centipede - I'm all for inter-racial relationships...but inter-species? They aren't even in the same Phylum! Their evolutionary lines diverged WAAAAY too long ago for that to be appropriate.

florida gay Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

Well Michael, I guess that depends on what kinda guys you're into. Charmin is obviously going for the Bears. I mean.. come on Bear Bottoms. Seriously. If you like your man with a little bit of meat.. then Charmin is for you. However,. if you're more into the Twinky boys or even the Muscle Gays, then Contonelle is definitely your brand of choice. On a personal note, I've never heard a bottom complain no matter how rough you are on their butt.

Amber Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

I always wondered if the Cottonelle puppy was Zach Braff...and I hate both commercials, but I'd have to say the Charmin bears are worse.

Ugh Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

I hate, HATE the Charmin ads. I'm not a prude and I have a decent sense of humor (I think), but come on. And i despise the commercial with the toothpaste on the back on someones hand that they clean up. I too, like others don't buy Charmin because of these commercials.

Strepsi Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

They only added the "bear bottoms" line well into the campaign -- you neglect to mention the evil genius of basing an entire "family" ad campaign around the dirty old saying "DOES A BEAR SH*T IN THE WOODS?"

Crystal Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

I have a real problem with the word WIPE being on tv. We all do it(hopefully), but it just such a personal thing, It just makes me cringe to hear that! As far as the commercials go, the puppy is sweet, but am ANGEL SOFT all the way!

Snarf Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

I hate the puppy - cute rots the intellect.

As for the Bears and their bottoms, annoying but not nearly as aggravating.

RTA Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

I think the Charmin Bears should do a commercial spot for Viagra.

nevertheless Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

I hate the Charmin ads! I've hated them since they first reared their ugly heads -- I don't want to see bears grinning as they take a dump and wipe their butts

I am also bothered by the ad with the ladies quilting TP. It is much less annoying than the bears, but it makes me worry about the poor quilting ladies. I know my mom takes great pride in her quilts, goes to great efforts to make them, spends a lot of time and expense on them. I imagine the poor TP quilters putting all that hard labor in their work, just to know that someone's going to wipe with it.

Mozz Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

I love them too, the gay subtext cannot be ignored. BEAR BOTTOMS! LMAO.

R. D. Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Yes. Airwick is totally disturbing. I believe that the whole ad industry is seriously disturbed.

Eli Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

Best for Bear Bottoms! The world can be tough on Bottoms! these ads are GAY, GAY, GAY and I LOVE THEM. Now; when the Catholic League figures out what these ads are really about, the'll be hell to pay.

Kate Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

To the pster right before me, I asked myself the very same thing. Yuck! Still, while I think the Charmin ads are worse, they get miniscule bonus points for using the bear in the woods analogy without spelling it out.

Kate Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

haha Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

I have to go with Charmin.. it's always been a bit disturbing to me when the bears look at the camera as they're using the toliet paper. Also another creepy commercial.. the Airwick Freshmatic Ultra commercials. Especially the one with the elephant who's husband is a centipead.. does anyone else find that disturbing?

Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

My God, is that Zach Braff voicing the puppy in the Cottonelle spot?

R. D. Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

HOW to do the job! (Darn those spell-checkers)

R. D. Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

I love to see a commercial demonstrating had to do the job with just one square as Sheryl Crow suggested.

Jen Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

I gotta go with Charmin. Those bears are atrocious.

TP "not so clever pun" Sato Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

Agreed with the person who called for the return of Mr. Whipple. Squeezably soft is a good selling point and the ads were kind of cute.

But does the tp industry really need to advertise? Everyone needs TP. It seems the big deciding factor at the supermarket is "he one on sale" or the "cheapest". So why not spend those ad dollars to send us coupons or free samples to prove how "good" the product is rather than barrage us with gross ads and unpopular bears?

Wishful thinking on my part...

Lucy Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

Hate hate hate the Charmin bears. Especially when they run down the beach to 'Hallelujah'. That's just wrong. Also hate how it seems to be called 'bath tissue' these days. Get over yourselves. It's toilet paper.

Melissa Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

I refuse to buy Charmin. The bears absolutely repulse me. Too bad no one's squeezing the Charmin anymore.

Ceballos Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

I love "Scrubs", so I'm a fan of Zach Braff's, but does anybody remember about three years ago when he was going to be the next indie movie auteur? Now he's the voice of a puppy in an annoying toilet paper ad. Ooops.

Still, the Cottonelle beats the hideous Charmin ad if for no other reason than the unintentional hilarity of "the world can be tough on bottoms".

snarky Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

Both are bad, but the puppy is cuter, so the bears are the worst. I never realized that the Puppy's voice is Zach braff. weird

Kai- Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

Hands down the Charmin bears are the worst!

Carrie Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

Ugh. The Charmin bears.

NineDaves Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

i hate all of toilet paper ads. especially the one that says "built with an extra layer of absorbency - to get the job done." BAAAARF!

kkhh Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

Everytime the Cottonelle one says "but you can do something kind for yours," my sister and I yell "SIT ON A PUPPY!"

Ben Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

Seriously? This is what you get paid for?

I'd go with the Charmin.

tia77 Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

Gee thanks, Even though it's not on the commercial, I have the Charmin Ultra "Less is more" song stuck in my head. I can't stand the Charmin bears...

kats Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

Charmin. I get the reference but that doesn't mean I want to see it played out literally on my television screen. The bears and the old commercial (for jeans? a diet product?) with the singing belly buttons are my most hated commercials of all time. I've actually had long discussions with my little brother and one of my best friends regarding how heinous and disturbing they both are.

Stephanie T. Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

The Puppy is cute but the Cottenelle commercial is lame, not to mention that it's a total rip off the PBS children's show "Wishbone". I don't care for the Charmin commercial either, so I'd say that I don't care for both.

megan Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

They're both bad, but the puppy one is horrible. I feel like it's only in the past few years that the TP ads have gotten so graphic. We all know what it's for, we don't need to be shown actual backsides to get it. I would be much more on board with a 30 second shot of the puppy just sitting there next to the logo, looking cute.

gnome Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

Cottonelle

Louise Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

Both those commercials make me feel dirty.

MattS Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

That Cottonelle ad makes me want to punch Zach Braff in the mouth even more than I already do. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Emma Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

Oops, "Charmin," not "Chramin." That's what I get for trying to type while holding a baby who does not want to sit at the computer...

Emma Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

I think I agree with most of the posters so far. That puppy is pretty bad, but I change the channel when the Chramin bears come on. I think those commercials are some of the worst on tv.

MCM Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

Those Charmin ads have been appalling me for years. They are almost everything that is wrong with advertising. The Cottonelle ad at least benefits from the cutey-pie puppy, and you have to be paying attention just a tiny bit harder to realize exactly what they are saying. They both make me go "ew" but Charmin makes me go "eeeewwwwwww..."

EP Sato Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

I hate the puppy ads, but not anywhere near as much as those bears. They always remind me of the old joke about the bear and the rabbit doing a #2 in the woods next to each other. The Bear complains about getting dookie on his fur, so he asks the rabbit about the issue.

The rabbit replies "you know, the dookie's never bothered me", so the bear wipes his "bottom" with the rabbit.

So it's either out of that joke or the old "Does a bear crap in the woods" saying that inspired these ads. Either way, I always think of bears taking a #2 when the ads come on. I guess TP is a difficult product to advertise for, but why a bear or a puppy?

For a cool TP ad, use J.lo as the spokesmodel. At least then the ads could be ironic or funny something to the tune of "When I shake my booty, I want to be sure it's clean"

MrKitty Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

I too quit buying Charmin because of the bears...the puppy is a cutie - it was better when it was just rolling rolls down the hall..but I guess they needed to keep up with Charmin. The bears running on the beach is the WORST.

pede Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

Omg, I am SO glad to see I'm not alone in hating both of these commercial's creatures. Its a toss-up for me, luckily, with my dvr I almost never have to deal with commercials anymore anyways. But I think the puppy is more annoying. You know its bad when an animal lover like me wants to toss an innocent puppy under a bus because of a commercial.

marilinda Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

i stopped buying charmin because of those damn bears.

and my boyfriend and i were just talking last night about how that puppy (voiced by zach braff) has a serious butt obsession.
