Another stupid Grammy feud: Aretha vs. Beyoncé

Feb 13, 2008, 10:31 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Beyoncé, Celebrity Feuds, Grammys, Music

Franklinbeyonce_l Hell hath no fury like an R&B diva scorned, especially at the Grammys. First there was Natalie Cole opening fire on Amy WInehouse. Now, in a statement released Tuesday, Aretha Franklin revealed that she, too, was incensed at a young upstart: she didn't appreciate that Beyoncé, in her introduction of Tina Turner at Sunday's awards show, referred to Turner as "the Queen." There's only one Queen of Soul, Franklin implied, and she was not amused. Though she concluded her statement with, "Love to Beyoncé anyway," Beyoncé's father/manager Mathew Knowles called Franklin's remarks "ridiculous... childish... [and] unprofessional." Ouch!

No word on what Turner thought of all this, or whether Franklin is angry at her, too, but surely even Turner would admit that Franklin, who's all but trademarked her regal title, deserves to keep it exclusively. At the same time, if there were anyone else who deserved such a title, it would be Turner.

What say you, PopWatchers? Do you think Beyoncé meant to diss Aretha? Do you think Franklin overreacted? And who really deserves to be called "the Queen"?

This is late, I know, but Beyonce did slip up a bit. She named all those wonderful singers in her introduction (incl Whitney, who btw would kick B's butt any day w/ her voice) and stated that all those qualities she listed in those previous singers were all summed up in Tina. I think they are but it almost diminished the characteristics that the rest of them possess too. Why didnt all those other women have ALL those qualities summed up in them as well? I do think the Queen thing is taken a bit out of proportion. Aretha though had every right to feel the way she did - as famous as Beyonce is (and I love her), she's still a young buck compared to Aretha or Tina + B should fall back a little. The status those two have reached and are revered like Whitney, Lena, Ella and Donna Summers, I'm not sure Beyonce can touch. She will definitely out sell them but there's something about a Whitney or Janet that Beyonce couldnt ever meet eye to eye!!

Before people get it all confused aretha has health issuse thats one reason she cannot control. If you read aretha has paved the way for a lot of r&b singers while tina on the other hand did as well i feel that something people should not say.Beyonce is stuck up and think she is the juck dont get me wrong she fine as He** but wat gose around comes right back around.Aretha is Queen of soul.Yea i would of got offended too. Tina up's to you but get your gurl Beyonce stright that there is only one Queen and that is Aretha

Tony Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

Aretha is always having issues with other female performers being call the Queen of Soul. Back in the mid 70's she had a feud with Natalie Cole being call the new Queen of Soul when her career went into a decline. Aretha is very insecure.

Jay Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

Aretha is the queen of egomania, pettyness and tackyness!Tina has way too much class to even get involved, and Beyonce(who unlike Aretha writes ALL of her songs) is on her way to become a legend and has the right to consider a queen whoever she wants, it's a free country!

WHO CARES , MY LORD THESE CELEBS ACT AS THOUGH THEY ARE SOMEBODY IMPORTANT, GOD IS THE BEST , SINGER ROLEMODEL MOTHER FATHER, SISTER, BROTHER, THAT WE WILL EVER HAVE, HE IS THE KING, SO ALL THESE CELEBS NEED TO GET OFF THEIR HIGH HORSE BECAUSE IT MAKES NO SENSE FOR PEOPLE TO BE MAD OVER SOMETHING AS SILLY AS THIS ONE , TELL GOD ABOUT IT.

Actually, Doesn't anyone remember Beyonce' and her temper tantrum over not winning the awards for "Dreamgirls"? Jennifer hudson put her to shame in that movie, acting and singing....Beyonce' couldn't hold a candle to Jennifer Hudson....now SHE has QUEEN potential....

But, the queen of soul crown will always belong to Aretha, the FIRST woman, and BLACK woman at that, to be entered into the ROCK and ROLL hall of fame.....'nuff said!

kaniahia Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

i am a fan of all three women. c'mon aretha's the queen of soul. mary's the queen of hip hop soul. can't tina be the queen of black rock? i could understand if the two made music from the same genre. you can't just take the word queen. and if she felt disrespected she should have taken it to beyonce' and beyonce' could explain her stance. then she could apologize if need be. this whole situation is stupid.

Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

Beyonce new what she was doing, and her Creative Director (Kim Burse) should be fired, for the speach she wrote for Beyonce to read out at the Grammies. Beyonce herself new Aretha was there, and must have know that the speach would have irritated her. Yes Aretha has an ego, but then again all of these stars have one, and many nowhere near as talented as Aretha Franklin. In Hinesight she probably reacted too quickly, then again my guess is that Beyonce knew that this would happen.

ryan Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 10:02 AM EST

The question for me is not who the better singer is. That's meaningless because it's all a matter of taste, and there is no objective yardstick. Even record sales is more of a measure of marketing than esthetic greatness. That said, I'm a fan of all three women, and have recordings of Aretha from as early as the 60's when she sung standards rather than soul.

For me, being a queen or leader means being a role model. And in this r-e-s-p-e-c-t, Aretha failed miserably. Beyoncé's father was right on the money when he called her childish and petty. It is bad enough that she privately feels so regal, but to broadcast it to the press is the height of arrogance and bad taste. Truly great ones need not remind the public of their accomplishments.

Aretha's press agent must have had a heart attack when Aretha issued her royal decree: That she is the only queen. Surely the agent knew how foolish she'd look. While her music remains great, I no longer respect her as a person.

Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

Aretha has covered many genres of music ie Gospel, Jazz, Blues,Pop,Soul, and even some opera arias, she's brilliant in all areas of music, as well as an accomplished pianist and composer of music. Yes Tina is relevant and has sung soul, blues, pop, and what she's most famous for is rock music. One man's meat is another man's poison and we can all argue to who's the best, but at the end of the day they both deserve the recognition and fame that they have worked for and the talents that they possess. Beyonce will never be in their league as a singer, and relays mostly on her looks, figure, and dancing skills. Although I must admit that she's a gorgeous looking woman, her singing ability although above average will never match Queen Aretha, or Queen Tina.

Shawnya Horton Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

I agree with Aretha that is very disrespectful but then again Beyonce was only doing her job so maybe they can talk it over and let this nonsense go be happy with the life that live

Corey Ortega Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 03:05 AM EST

Some people in this forum said something about Tina Turner having plastic surgery done. Thats dumb and unfounded. Anyone who took time to know Tina would know that she never had plastic surgery, ever. Because she does not believe in artificially altering one's physical appearance(read her book, why dont you?). Shes just more careful about being healthy than most people thats why she still looks great at her age. Her nose has always been that way, because she's half Cherokee, look at her old photos. For the sake of argument, let say she did have plastic surgery, how do you account for her firm body and unwrinkled skin? Could she have had her entire body pulled and stitched?!!! U-humm. Be fair. You must be thinking about Cher.

Corey Ortega Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 02:44 AM EST

Every time Tina Turner steps in American soil, she gets disrespected. Its bad enough that her talent and contribution to music seldom get celebrated in the US, and the one night it does happen, someone gets envious and spoil the memory! Is it a mystery why the legend calls Europe home more than she does her native soil? Tina Turner touched more hearts in all corners of the world than any artist of her genre can ever hope to achieve. Beonce was right to call her a Queen. Because thats what a good Queen does, inspire people. The wrath Aretha unleashed after the fact shows that she is not a Queen, but a despot.

Beyonce was saying that tina was the queen of rock and soul. Tina has covered more than one type of music. plus she did notice Miss Franklin in the introduction and she concluded by saying tina represented a part of each artist name that she called out. If all the artist that Bee called out were soul "" R&B artist I could understand Franklin being affended.

Gwen Sat, Feb 23, 2008 at 11:55 PM EST

I am very upset someone said Areatha was a one hit wonder. They need to do some damn research. Obviously, she could have not been titled Queen of Soul if she was a one hit wonder dummy. I don't think Beyonce was trying to disrespect Areatha but she did. Tina Turner was not titled Queen but she was a bad sister. You cannot call another artist a queen and the queen of soul is present.

jay rat Sat, Feb 23, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

I dont believe Beyonce was taking a shot at Aretha. I think that Aretha needs to get rid of the ego. Stop trippin, and move on, life is too short for the dumb stuff.

Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 07:07 AM EST

Go on (YouTube) and type in Aretha Franklin, you can see various videos of her performing through the decades. There's one performance of her singing Dr Feelgood in Paris which is just awsome. There are a few videos of her when she was thin and very sexy.

H Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 06:23 AM EST

Tina had plastic surgery to alter her nose, and implants as well, she was no oil painting when she first came on the scene, in 1975 Aretha was much better looking than her and hasn't had any plastic surgery. Undeniably she now has a weight problem, and I do hope she tries to lose it if only for her health. Tina was a good rock singer but never had the range of the one and only Queen Aretha.

Talent wise, Aretha is the Queen! I don't care what her dress size may be or if she wears fur or not. Maybe in about 30 years, if Beyonce finds some decent music that stands the test of time, she could be considered a queen too.

King Dub Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 07:09 PM EST

Now as far as who would be the Queen of looks......Beyonce.....Tina.......
Aretha would never make it. But, we need to get Aretha in a weight loss camp for her healty. And because we love her.

king dud Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

Anyone born in 1950,1960,1970 would know that there is only 1 true Queen of Soul......and that's Aretha....Tina is the R/B,rock/roll Queen......Beyonce...well she's not in any of these ladies classes yet...and will never be in my book....if you don't believe me....get some of Aretha's old CD....that girl sound so good it will make you cry....I'm gonna reiterate this point......Aretha is the only Queen of SOUL.....period.

Now come on all of us know that all black sister are queens, but there comes a time when we must pass down the crown, aretha! grow up, your time is up! Tina is a diva, she moves with time and is a very good looking sister! The younger generation love her becausse she's an old diva!! meaning she stop traffic, Young and old men turn heads when they see her! aretha, we can't say the same for you. Yea!! start concentrating more on healthy life styles, dieting, and then take your crown back. We as black women would love to see the real aretha! just because you are getting older doesn't mean you have to let yourself go! go find yourself, and remember once a queen always a queen! It's not the name that makes the queen, it's you! YOU WERE ALREADY A QUEEN AND DIDN'T KNOW IT.

i think Aretha needs to step down ,,,she is old and needs to be quiet,,,this is another day in age,,we wanna hear new music and not the old ones...,,,so we need to have a new Queen of Soul....maybe Beyonce, needs to step aside too and let someone else take the spot light aswell..she is not doing so well her self.....so i say shut up to the both of themm.,, im sick of them both,,,......

Justin Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

Aretha Franklin is undisputedly the Queen of Soul. It seems a little childish for her to make a comment on such an innocuous comment like Beyonce's, however. But it sure feels like Papa Knowles is the one trying to ride the publicity train, again. Maybe Beyonce was just flustered to be on stage with so much real soul and talent like Tina's. I don't get the Beyonce thing, to be honest. She's very beautiful, an excellent pop star, she was good in "Dreamgirls", etc. but she is not a great singer, and sometimes when she really tries to go for it she's not even a very good singer. She misses alot of big notes when she tries to be soulful...and I find her kind of wooden and calculated. The great singers sing from their heart, like they can't contain it, and they're humbled by the voice God gave them and grateful. I think that's why there's so much Gospel background with the Great Ones. By the way, am I the only one that thought Tina wiped the stage with Beyonce? Vocally and performance-wise.

Renee Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

Ever so childish of all of them. If there is a real gripe about being labeled a "QUEEN," it should be to the true "QUEEN" who is investing her dollars wisely (since she has a lot of them to invest) in feeding hundreds of thousands of children who are hungry in third world countries or even contributing to their health care. Now, what "QUEEN" would that be? Nobody since none of them are exemplifying a positive image to do so! Now, when we get to this level, then, I feel there should be a legitimate gripe. The real issue at hand is..Can either one of them really sing..In my opinion, NO! So, who cares about who is "QUEEN," when in all essence, it's summing up to be a bunch of B/S. Now, enters the famous Matthew Knowles to add his two cents when he's famous for causing continuous confusion between Beyonce and others because someone refuses to sign him on as a manager. Tsk, tsk, tsk! Is Jerry Springer in the house?

Sabra Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

Omg i think the whole thing is just stpuid ok its not it matters to anyone any ong they are just people like you and me and i dont think a little argument should go this far noone would do it from a noncelebrity is so disterbing how you people treat celebritys. think about it and you willl realize!!!!!!!!!!!

Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

20 Grammy awards says it all, plus 20 million selling singles between 1967 and 1973, and who knows how many since then. She's the undisputed Queen of Soul, the Diva who used to have a 5 octave range and the power to lift the roof. America should be extremely proud of such a remarkable Lady, and national treasure. Yes there have been many Diva's and predominately in Opera, and even Pavarotti himself respected Aretha, and credited her for her soulful rendition of Nessun Dorma. How many other popular singers could have performed that aria the way she did, and be respected by people in the Opera world. She's the Diva of Diva's who will always be remembered for her remarkable voice and will also has been proved, be the envy of many in the public eye. I for one will always have a collection of her music which is so versatile, and suitable for whatever mood you might be in. Keep going Aretha because there's nobody out there that will match what you have acheived.

natasha tootle Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

now ladys stop that a queens a queen if she carrys herself as such all that other stuff behind it dont count we as women should be thankfull for the acknowledement seeing how far we.ve come but to see the ol skool try to dis the new skool no matter what is a mind blowing statement in itself matter fact b is doing nothing but giving the ol skool its props repen it to the fullest you go b do yo thang haters come in all shape sizes colors an ages gena-haters/ you are the new queen now dont even let what those ol bittys say still yo smile a sexxy smile at that.you doin it better then them anyway even back in tha day stop frontin if you put b an then together she wins hands up an down no comp love them haters you doing something right to have some ol skool speak on you like that keep up the best work girl

Tabatha Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

Beyonce needs to start thinking for herself, and not relying on Daddy and her Assisstant to wipe her backside. At least Aretha fights her own corner, and shows how independant she is. She has every right to make her opinion known, and she was definately dissed by dizzy Beyonce.

gee Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 11:08 AM EST

I think that Aretha is wrong for her actions....The Queen has nver been in her tittle so to raise so much hell over somethin like that IS childish because Tina Turner is just as much of a queen compared to Aretha any day!! And I know that Beyonce didn't mean any disrespect....Aretha should be ashamed of herself for acting like that!!!

LaTasha Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

I think this is senseless on so many levels...especially for Aretha...she should be more woman about this. First of all, Beyonce only ready what was written on those telepromters for her to read. Secondly, she only said "Queen", not "Queen of Soul"...This shows stupidity on Areatha's part because if anyone knows their music and anything about Tina, she started off as a POP artist...not SOUL. Now does she have it, yes! and would be deserving of the title, but I think Aretha took this way too far. Finally, no one died and made Aretha a Queen. Queen is a word that is used universally, she does not own any rights to it at all. To me, what this says, is that she is insecure about herself, her music and her legacy. Grow up Aretha...God is in control and if He intended for you to own the name "Queen", then He would have saw fit for it to happen that way. There are more serious things to dispute over. Give it a rest and just continue to do you!!!

Broadway Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

I would think that both Aretha and Beyonce have gotten over it by now, it's the individuals on this thread that are taking this more personally than anyone, and I believe both Beyonce and Aretha fans should get over it, and chill a little, and practice what you all preaching.

sexxy eyes Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 11:02 AM EST

i think da ol skool should bow out gracefully they are really looking childish an a true queen acts accrodingly

Hollywood Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Now.. I'm a huge Beyonce' fan and people has said it on here 100 times over. But Aretha was just childish for her response. It was not meant to be takin personally because even in the introduction Beyonce' mentioned Aretha.. so really I jus say tht she should jus leave it alone and be happy.

Tim Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

Tina has had some success in the eighties and nineties but her body of work, and her musical talent doesn't match the Queen Aretha Franklin.

Sam Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

Beyonce should have had the sense to think for herself not what some assistant of hers has wrote for her. Her knowledge on popular music isn't what it should be, and deserves the title Queen of the airheads.

Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

Let's just be real here people. Aretha has made her mark with a few #1 hits, but she has nothing on Tina Turner. Aretha is living off of her name more than her talent. But besides that, Beyonce did not mean anything personal against Aretha. She didn't call Tina the "Queen of Soul". If anything Tina Turner is the Queen of Rock Soul. But the introduction was beautiful and it did fit Ms. Turner. It shows that Aretha has no respect for anyone and it seems as if she was a bit jealous. She saw two beautiful and very fit women still doing there thing on stage and she cannot compare. If she focused her energy on being a loving person and put a good foot foward on trying to mentally, emotionally, and PHYSICALLY improve herself she would be so humble as to not worry about silly titles. It just goes to show how far people will go for attention when they are unhappy with themselves.

peggy Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

That was very unprofessional and childish of Aretha. First of all, if anyone should feel disrespected , it should be Beyonce and Tina by the comment that Aretha made. She should have been listening to what was really said and not what she thought she heard. Beyonce didn't call Tina the "Queen of Soul" or the Queen of anything...she just called her a Queen.

Sagitarious Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

Tina's the Queen of the croakers, and Beyonce the queen of airheads.

GEMINI Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

Well I think Aretha is taking words and twisting them to her advantage and her singing today stinks and she just shouts her words and calls it music. After her comment that tina turner is not THE QUEEN well she just stole aretha's title because tina turner has more class than aretha ever did and aretha those outfits need to go NOW!!!!! OUCH!!!! My retna's are burning from those furs!! They are so over!!!!! Well anyways Beyonce didn't mean anything by it but I guess being a child about it (ARETHA) is what you really are.... YOU GO BEYONCE AND TINA!!!!!

Brad Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

Aretha's the most amazing singer ever. Pure brilliance.

Lorenzo Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

She's the best female singer ever, and at her best and in her younger days would outsung both Tina and Beyonce together. Beyonce doesn't even come close to Mariah, Whitney, Alicia, and they all admire the one and only Queen of Soul ARETHA FRANKLIN.

joyce Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

oh she may be a queen......a queen that has NO class!!!!

Joe Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

Yes! Aretha is most certainly a legend, a true one of a kind thats led by example.

Harry Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

Aretha will always be the legendary Queen of Soul.

Jennifer Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

Beyonce got no class, yes she's beautiful on the outside but that's where it stops. History will soon forget her.

joyce Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

it is funny how some of the posters on here are saying that beyonce and her father should show respect to that drama queen............in order to get respect she should eat more humble pie because she is still not the "Queen" to me and never will be.

joyce Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

Diva: hahhaha that is a laugh. More like drama queen. what a joke. Tina Turner and Beyonce have more class than this "woman" will ever have!!!

Jackie Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 09:30 AM EST

It is quite obvious the word Respect isn't paramount in the Knowles household, Beyonce needs to give a little respect to recieve it, I'm sure she'll learn that in time.

Nicole Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 09:24 AM EST

Ms. Franklin needs to let it go. Beyonce, in my opinion, meant no harm. Should the Queen Mother be offended also?

Stella Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

Where is the humility with these women. And I mean the older ones who are setting the example. How completely disgusting to see such arrogance and hautiness about ones self. My God! Christ was the son of God and he refused to allow the people of his day to make him a king. Get a grip Aretha. Your just a woman on this earth with some talent. Try to remember where it came from. Try to copy your professed exemplar. Christ. Be a little humble will ya?

whitesoulbrother Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

It should have gone like this:
Aretha to Bouncy- "Dear, there's only one queen of soul."
Bouncy to Aretha - "Yes mama, you're right and you are that queen. As often as I do this kind of thing still, I got so excited being up there and all, I mis-spoke. I didn't mean any harm and I certainly did not mean to slight you, Mrs. Franklin. Forgive me?"
Aretha to Bouncy - "Sure child, no harm done. And, thank you very much. When you going to be in my part of town. I'd love to have you over..."

In other words, show a little respect (no pun intended) Bouncy, and you daddy too!

Tina Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

This is all getting a bit silly, why do people come on here to make such inappropriate, and derogatory comments about Aretha or Beyonce. Beyonce is a beautiful Woman who's very talented, and Aretha in Her day was very Attractive, and not the size she is now, although this has nothing to do with her credentials as a performer, and in fairness has been a trailblazer for them all. If people have issues with either of them then they should stick to the point, and not make such horrible comments. None of us are perfect for that matter, and I'm sure we all have relatives or people close to us who have a weight problem, and how would they feel if they saw you write such nasty and hurtful comments. People who make comments about others such as made about Aretha Franklin, usually have self esteem issues of their own, and need to take an introspective look at themselves before they judge others. Peace Be With You All.

Arethas Hits for the uninitiated:- Never Loved a M the way I love you, Respect, Chain of Fools, Say A Little Prayer, Until you come back to me, thats what I'm going to do,Think,Dr Feelgood,Baby I love You, Giving Him Something He Can Feel,A brand new Me,Day Dreaming,Freeway of Love, Sisters are doing it for themselves,Who's Zoomin Who, Deeper Love,Willing to Forgive,Master of Eyes,Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,Spanish Harlem,Angel,Ain't No Way,I'm in Love,Call Me,You're All I Need To Get By,A Rose Is Still A Rose, There Ain't Nothing but The Real Thing. and and a lot more that I can't think of so She's no one hit wonder, and please do your homework she's not the Queen of Soul for Nothing. She's also got 20 Grammies in recognition of her work over the years, without all the other accolades. I'm not going to knock Beyonce or Tina and I'm sure even they are well aware of what the Queen OF SOUL HAS ACHEIVED.

Pete Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 07:13 AM EST

Truely get put off by this "diva" and "queen" b.s.That goes for the"king and queen" of pop,too Michael what's his name.
You Americans find your own words for these pompus red carpet crawlers! You have no monarchy and diva is an an Italian word used for opera singers of the fair kind.

victor Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 03:41 AM EST

oh...& by the way for all u "history nuts" who think we dont know our past its Diana Ross who was awarded Female Entertainer of the Century in 1977 not Ms. Franklin...Tina is da Queen, Di is the Boss & Aretha...she just seriously needs to watch her weight!

MANNY Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 02:07 AM EST

ARETHA JUST NEEDS TO CALM DOWN AND SHUT UP! BEYONCE WAS JUST SAYING THAT TINA IS A QUEEN, NOT "THE QUEEN OF SOUL". ARETHA MUST BE VERY INSECURE ABOUT HERSELF IF SHES MAD ABOUT THAT. I THINK SHES ALSO MAD BECAUSE TINA LOOKS WAY BETTER THAN SHE DOES. AND TO ALL OF YOU PEOPLE POSTING BAD COMMENTS ABOUT BEYONCE ARE JUST AS INSECURE AS ARETHA, HATERS!!!

Lynda Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 01:06 AM EST

umm.. you how they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. well so is opinion, Beyonce can call anyone she damn pleases a "QUEEN" Im not gonna lie, Im down with Aretha, she got down in her time.. But give me a break.. for all anyone cares, Elton John is the greatest Queen! Seriously girls!!

Jeff Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 11:33 PM EST

Beyonce did not refer to Tina Turner as the Queen of Soul. She just said simply the Queen. Aretha just has no class and thats it! They refer to Dolly as the Queen of Country Music. Then they will refer to Loretta Lynn as the Queen and then Tammy Wynette. I have never seen any of them throw such a diva fit over who is or who was the "Queen". Aretha just needs to get over it and should just be hanging her head in shame. And Im sure Miss Turner is just over the whole thing and could care less who the Queen is. One thing Aretha is "queen" of is Queen of the Supermarket. I didnt know she owned the copyright to the word! Get some RESPECT and THINK Queen!

Michelle Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 10:52 PM EST

I love Aretha Franklin but she is really feeling herself on this one. Beyonce didn't say Tina was the Queen of Soul. She just called Tina the Queen. Queen of what? Rock? the night? Ass-Whippin's? Who Knows? Aretha doesn't hold the copyright on the word queen. I saw the show and didn't think Beyonce disrespected Aretha in any way. Aretha's comment was unprofessional and uncalled for. If she wants to remain the queen, then she should've conducted herself as one and shook that $#!+ off. I'm not a huge fan of Beyonce but I gotta go with her on this one.

jerome Tue, Feb 19, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

I love aretha and beyonce and i truely don't beleive beyonce meant any ill intentions. for sure aretha is the queen of soul. also i've heard a lot of hate on beyonce undeservantly. Lets be real, i think that there is a lot of jealous women out there and is perticuly jealous of beyonce because of her talent and sex appeal.

Dylnn Tue, Feb 19, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

Mathew Knowles should get over himself, he is in the business and he knows protocol. Beside, he fails to remember how childish he looked when he claim his non-acting daughter was being discriminated against at the Oscar. His childish behavior used the race card when several talented African American were nominated and several won. Beyonce, may have goofed, she also knows how the industry she’s in works, and it just likes any other business. Ms. Franklin didn’t have to respond, and probably shouldn’t have, but she certainly have paid her dues.

Aretha Franklin has endured and paved the road for many and will always be remember. If he such a pro, he should have done his homework. He and his overexposed daughter would do well to remember this.

Dionne ~

I know hundreds of real " artists " and " real " musicians " who are Atheists. ( including myself )

So why then does this mythical god character come into play when we are talking about " talent " ~ which by the way ,Beyuk has none ! ( god must have given her boobs and legs instead )

Crystal Iris Hawkins Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

I didn't take it in a negative way. Both are queens. Areatha is saying how she feels about it and she has the right to have her own feelings. Yes, Areatha you are the Queen of soul.

Dionne Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

I think this is stupid. I love Tina and I love Aretha, as well as Beyonce. All of them have talent, and all of them have achieved so much in their time. Can you really sit there and blame Beyonce over something as stupid as this. When I watched the show it didn't even bother me until I heard about what Aretha had to say. It's stupid. Aretha I hope you are not loseing sleep over this because this is nothing to lose sleep over. Life goes on. Just think about what people have to say about you besides the "queen". People are going to say what they want to say anyway. Beyonce is a young and very talented artist and it doesn't matter if people like her or not the fact is the girl has talent and no one can take what God has blessed her with. So you can hate on her say what you want to say about her it doesn't matter the girl is blessed. And if the Lord is for her who shall be against her??

By Tor Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

Come on ~ one is a R&B legend ~ the other wears a wig and lip syncs.

Neither are Ella Fitzgerald or Anita O' Day , and neither are singing opera ~ so what's the point !

Will anyone remember who these hacks of today are 40 years from now ~ I think not !

Bri Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

omg are you serious?...from my point of view i think that beyonce did no wrong and i am a HUGE fan....yes i think tina is a queen too...aretha i think maybe just overreacted a little n maybe just wanted some spotlight too...and theres a lot of people saying beyonce is a sex symbol n she this and that....yes she is a sex symbol but thats not how she sells her stuff...alot of you who say u arent her fans n have the big paragraphs on how you hate her...you must have a lot of spare time....

Oh my god, many people here need to grow up. First of all, its not Beyonce's fault, she is reading from a teleprompter and she is just reading what they wrote for her so she has almost no control of it. Besides, Aretha is a GROWN woman and shouldn't be offended because she is an amazing singer and she is the queen of soul but there are OTHER QUEENS too. Tina is a queen, Aretha is a queen too. So don't get mad over something so silly. Aretha you are an amazing performer, but try to act a LITTLE.. more professional. I still love you though. Tina, none of this is your fault :), Beyonce keep doing what you are doing, one day you will be called.... queen B? yeah I think so! :)

If Beyonce had said "Queen of Soul", I would say it was a dis, but she didn't. Aretha needs to get over herself and stop looking for fights, she is a true Miss Diva.

Sally Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

Aretha can handle whatever is dished out she's a strong woman, whome all independant women should aspire to be. When she sung RESPECT she was the perfect role model to do so, Arethas payed her dues many times over. All hail the QUEEN.

Carol Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

Also, Beyonce's daddy needs to go and sit down someplace. He needs to let his little girl take her licks and learn a lesson. I guess he's concerned because he has sexed-up his baby for the mean green. We all have to give an account one day. I just wander how he can live with himself, for using his daughter as a sex object to sell cds! I feel sorry for Beyonce, because I really believe that she doesn't know any better, because of the poor examples of her own parents.

Lakisha Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

I agree with Lin, Aretha Franklin is a powerful singer/entertainer. Tina is good, but Aretha is unique and in a class by herself and will always be the queen of soul. Beyonce is a want to be who uses sex to get recognized. Back in the day she would have been one of many pretty, untalented faces. I'm not trying to be mean, but calling it what it is. Also, when I'm 69 years old and get plastic surgery as many times as Tina, I'll look good to.

Lin Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

It's really sad when younger artist don't realize the importance of respect, especially for someone like Aretha who paved the way for them. It was a "dis" and I believe that Ms. B was was just tryinig to suck up to Tina. I think Tina is also a great entertainer, but when comparing her career to Aretha's, she does not compare. Also, Beyounce is a pretty lady, but plastic surgery can do a lot to improve one's looks!!!!!

Samantha Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

Beyonce will never be in the same league as Tina Turner, she can't dance or sing anywhere near as well as Ms Turner could in her day, she's just a cheap immitation.

VIOLETA Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 01:27 AM EST

Ms. Country-Bumpkin Beyonce knew exactly what she was doing. Ms. Turner is a Queen in her own right...but...she and Aretha Franklin are in two different genres. Anyone who listens to Beyonce speak can clearly see that she is ignorant and probably has a sixth grade education so you can't expect too much to come outta her mouth anyways. I do think that she meant to step on Aretha's toes and perhaps wanted to start some drama between her and Tina Turner. She's no good anyways, I'm mean does anyone remember what the other two memebers of Destiny's child said about her. Her true colors are just starting to show. Ms. Turner and Ms. Franklin are better singers than Beyonce will ever be..and as far as performance goes...she will never be like Tina Turner in my eyes. She is a copycat and needs to get a new act because hers is played out. I'm so sick of Beyonce and wishes that she would retire early.

tamken Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

I don't think the comment was disrespectful or ill-intended, Beyonce never stated she was the queen of soul she just said the queen, and if you really think about it of all the great black female performers no one puts on a better performance than Ms. Turner! Yeah they may have the vocals but no one can move like Tina does! She was definitely the "Beyonce" of her day!

tamken Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

Beyonce is a wind up merchant, and achieved exactly what she set out to do. She new that this would get a reaction from Aretha, and although Aretha perhaps shouldn't have given her the satisfaction of a reaction, Beyonce doesn't come out of this blameless. She certainly didn't give Aretha the respect that she deserves as an artist, and Beyonce herself will never accomplish musically what Aretha the Queen has. Aretha is in the twilight years of her career, and has a lot to feel proud of, Beyonce has many years to go, and some upstart might do to her one day exactly what she's done to Aretha. Just watch this space.

Hopefully Ms. Knowles has not contracted the diva complex.

Pam Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

I come from a different perspective altogether. I love all three artists. I understand Aretha's upset, feel Tina has been unfairly caught in the middle and think Beyonce should have had more common sense. It's really a shame, and it was completely unavoidable. Beyonce should have the grace to apologize, even if she thinks she did nothing wrong. Why alienate Aretha and, potentially, her fan base? It makes absolutely no sense.

Lorenzo Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 08:40 AM EST

Kim Burse who is Beyonces tour creative director for the past 8 years engineered this situation, and knew exactly what she was doing. She has all but admitted writing the script for Beyonce on the Ryan Camerons Show on v-103. Kim Burse also made inappropriate comments regarding Arethas size and laughed smuggly to herself, whilst being interviewed, which Mr Knowles (Beyonce's Father)is also very unprofessional. Perhaps Beyonce should sack the woman for her incompetance as a creative director, and employ someone who has more common sense.

ok now im gonna play devils advacate
on one hand we have aretha and on the other we have beyonce and tina turner.
now here's the way i see it.aretha is
how old now,in her 70's i might be wrong but women that age tend to be a bit cranky, and dont forget she's still
the queen of soul, beyonce bless her heart is only being honest on how she
feels about tina turner.there is that little thing we like to call, the first amendment aka-the right to free
speech.plus how do we know that it
wasn't written on the telepromter.
and yes everyone is intitled to there
opinion, thats the beauty of free speech.so in closing why cant bygons
be bygons.we all have someone we look up to,and sometimes we say things before thinking, but in this case
beyonce was doing what she was getting paid to do...introduce
(Tina Turner)
enough said!!

Daryl Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 02:42 AM EST

I think the
Queen is from England!! I am sure that it was not meant to take away any props due to Aretha. We should focus on more important things in life, like our purposes in life.

johnny Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 02:35 AM EST

Beyonce' didn't refer to Tina Turner as the queen of soul. From previous articles beyonce' has always looked up to Tina Turner and she may be a queen in her eyes. Aretha had no right to make such a big deal out of the whole thing, it looks as if she were jealous that Beyonce' expressed her admiration of Tina Turner publicly. Tina may be her idea and the artist that she looks up to. I'm not a fan of Aretha and she isn't my queen of anything and I would never address her as my queen of soul. It looks as if she is the queen of eating, but I guess she wouldn't want that title either. Beyonce' has the right to address anyone she pleases as "queen" and it's your right also to address Aretha as your queen of soul. It all boils down to a person that thinks society should bow down and kiss her butt, but Beyonce showed her. In return Aretha showed her true colors and they are ugly.

Fred Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 12:42 AM EST

I come from a different time than most Beyonce backers. And I truly enjoy all of Beyonce's music. But only Arethea can placed above everyone in regards to Soul Music.

D Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 12:11 AM EST

First, Beyonce is not an "upstart". Second, she was just honoring Turner with a spontaneous introduction. If Franklin is upset with sharing the title of "queen", she needs to get it patented. Until then she needs to let others have the praise they deserve and give them a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

bjh Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 10:10 PM EST

The only person I have ever heard referred to as "Queen" in the music arena is Aretha Franklin!!

Hail to the Queen!!!

Henry Thomas Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

Bruce hit the nail on the head, if Ms Knowes had known this, this could been avoid.

B J Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 08:49 PM EST

Beyonce' did not didd Aretha. Areth overreacted --as she does everything from the looks of her. Tina does not have to announce to anyone that she is Queen. We know it!

Bruce Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

I don't know why there is all of this confusion...Aretha is the Queen of Soul and Tina is the Queen of Rock and Roll..clearly.

Jude Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

Tina Turner is the queen!
From my opinion
Aretha is the Queen of Soul FOOD!

Stella Rodgers Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 07:50 PM EST

The "Queen," as we all know it is Ms. Franklin, as to why Beyonce called Tina Turner the "Queen" is confusing. When I heard Beyonce call Tina the Queen I was amazed and surprised. I knew then that someone, like Ms. Franklin, would fire back. And rightly so. She earned it, she owns it, and she deserves it. We all know this as so, so why the backlash at Ms. Franklin? You should always stand up for what is rightly yours.

Manwiththeduck Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

Isn't it WONDERFUL that Tina Turner didn't get into this FOOLISHNESS? I grew up with Aretha Franklin's music. Let me just say this: NO DOUBT about the Queen of Soul. But Tina ain't no slouch, either. There are as many different "nations" in music as there are on our planet...Why can't there be more than one queen? I am NOT a Beyonce fan ( except her looks...my GOD that is a beautiful woman! Jay-Z is one LUCKY man!!! ) but I don't believe that this was meant as an insult. Also...Tina is the Queen of Rock and Roll, NOT Soul!!! Everybody CALM DOWN, o.k.? You people ( even you, Queen Aretha! ) need to reach for the decaf instead of the espresso, hmm???

jbags93 Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

carolyn Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

I REALLY DONT THINK BEYONCE DISSED ARETHA I LOVE AREATHAS MUSIC I GREW UP ON HER MUSIC BUT I REALLY THINK SHE NEEDS TO LET THIS GO

Rob Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

Aretha Franklin at her best has been forgotten by many. I can remember her when just nobody could even come close to her vocal performances, and were too intimidated to dare duet with her. Her voice was absolutely astonishing, and often moved people to tears. She still sings really well considering her age of nearly 66. Her catalogue of music is phenominal, and her numerous awards are groundbreaking. She's the Diva of Divas and the title of Queen of soul well deserved. She can sing almost anything and make the song her own and by the most part one of the most RESPECTED,and influential recording artists ever. There was no way Beyonce didn't know what she was doing, especially with Aretha out in the audience. I hope this cloud has a silver lining as Aretha doesn't deserve what the gutter press are doing to her, and I'm sure with hindsight Beyonce will regret the whole episode.

nasha Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

Regarding the comment made, YES, Ms Knowles meant to diss Aretha. Beyonce is not naive, she is skillful at putting others down without taking responsibility for it (eg. Destiny Child). It's like saying "Please welcome the Godfather of Soul... Mr. Stevie Wonder!" or "Please welcome the man they call The Boss... Jon Bon Jovi!". She was well aware alright. I assure you of that!

Lorenzo Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

Well said Nasha I couldn't have put it better myself.

nasha Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

Beyonce's entire introduction was distasteful. She wore a strippers outfit and did a grind opening and closing her legs while naming the long list of classic musical legends. Beyonce needs to realize that despite who her father pays off, she is NOT all that. A beautiful gown would have been appropriate for that introduction. Beyonce just came across as cheap, she does that real well. Anything to get men in the audience to focus on her. Her mother owns a boutique, surely she couldve made a tasteful suggestion on what to wear. She was dressed just fine for the dance routine later. She has a lot to learn, a little humility inplace of all that arrogance would help a bunch!

americanmg Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

This is so out of control. First of all, folks should be more respectful about Aretha's weight. Words go deeper than bruising. Aretha is a Diva, and thats just how they react. As far as being the Queen, Tina proved at the Grammies that she so well deserves the title. Folks wanna call Tina the Queen of Rock, it takes soul to do any kind of singing. Something to think about. Beyonce was right on time though, Tina has all the qualities and at 68, wow, she still gots it. I was so happy and proud to see her doing her thang. Long live Tina. Aretha we still love you, I trust you dont take all these harsh words to heart.

Anne Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

Beyonce is a brilliant artist in her own right, who can hold her own with the best of them. One day she will go down in history as one of the worlds greatest vocalists.

Kevin Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

Tina is the Queen of ROCK and Aretha is the Queen of SOUL, duh

Kirk Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Lets hope this is a learning curve for Beyonce, and a lesson she'll never forget. I'm sure Whitney, Aretha's God-Daughter wouldn't be too impressed by her mishap,as she's always given Aretha the respect she deserves as she learned her trade from her in the recording studio when she went there with her mother Cissy, who was a backing singer for Aretha.

anyonmous Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

Aretha is the queen of soul. We all know that but i don't think beyonce did or said anything deliberately to hurt Aretha. We all know that she is the queen of soul and she is very much respected for what it is that she does. But maybe beyonce saw Tina Turner as a queen in her own right for what she has done. I totally respect Aretha Franklin and she is one of the greatest singers that ever walked on the face of the earth. Tina Turner is also great at what she does. I am not saying that she is better in anyway shape or form. Why come they both can't get respected for what it is that they do. Beyonce really didn't mean as a diss to Aretha Franklin she really didn't I think Aretha is being to sensitive and needs to chill out !

Julie Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

Aretha Franklin is one of the greatest singers af all time, and she is bound to stick up for herself regarding the grammies. Everyone of the singers have an enormous ego, and if I could sing like Aretha, Tina, Streisand, to name but a few then so would we all. These stars live in a world light years away from ours. The people making fun of Arethas weight need to grow up, and stick to the issues, as she's acheived more than any of the critics on here. Yes! things are being blown out of proportion and hopefully this will all blow over, and Aretha and Tina can do what they do best Sing and entertain us for a few more glorious years, and as for Beyonce good luck.

beyoncehater Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

You have to respect the old school legends because they paved the way. As far as Beyonce is concerned she's not a great singer by any stretch of the imagination. Aretha gets plenty respect in my book!!!

ROB Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

It is only words. And a grown woman shouldn't let another's words annoy her. If she know's she's the queen of soul why should she allow someone's words to hinder her? In our own right's we women are all Queen's. I think that it was the soul part that she really was annoyed at. I say forgive and foget.

Steve Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

There will never be another Aretha Franklin-period!

Those that don't know who the Queen of Soul music is, don't know squat.

jocko Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

Does anyone really care what miss plastic surgery calls Tina? Aretha is the Queen, if you dont think so, look at her dress size.

teerick Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

this is what wrong with labels. we all can be kings and queens in our own right. who is a king or queen to me might not be your choice but that does not make me wrong. Tina is in my opinon the QUEEEN OF ROCK! ARETHA FRANKLIN IS NOT ONLY THE QUEEN OF SOUL FOR ME but music period! NOW THAT'S MY OPINION LIVE WITH IT!

No matter how you feel about either of these ladies one thing has to be said. It is everyone's right to call someone "THEY" admire whatever adjective they choose. A lot of people keep saying Beyonce is entitled to make a mistake, or that she should check her history. But what mistake and what does history have to to with anything? If Beyonce, or you and I for that matter, thinks Tina Turner, or anyone else, to be a queen, why can that not be an appropriate title? How presumptious, rather Paris Hilton, of Aretha to think that she is the only person anyone can consider a queen. Aretha is talented and a legend, but she may not have had as much of an impact on Beyonce as Tina did. Is that a crime. If Beyonce thinks Tina is a queen it is not a mistake or an attack on history for her to do so. I think my mother is a queen, queen latifa thinks she is one, hell even Mary J. Blige is dubbed the queen of hip hop soul. I may be next on her hit list cause I am definately a queen!

Annette E. Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Please step back OFF Beyonce! If Areatha, at this point in life, does not know that she knows who she is...it's her plight! She's the Queen of SOUL....NOT the QUEEN. Tina is Beyonce's QUEEN and she's allowed that....CHILDISH OLD A?? People!

bluesgirl Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

i think aretha needs to get over it. first of all sh wore the worstthing in her closet second of all shes no queen of soul only the queen of,THE FAT ASS CLUB. SHE LOOKED AWFUL. ARETHA DO US ALL A FAVOR RETIRE AND GIV IT UP AND PLEASE GO ON THE TELEVISION SHOW HOW TO LOOK GOOD COVERED UP!!!!

Les Parrot Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

I just think that, like most of her compatriots, Beyoce spoke without thinking. Given the slightest excuse, words just come out of her mouth. Is all there is to it. Voila!

JJA Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

Aretha needs to get off her high horse. Tina Turner is known as the Queen of Rock and Roll, she even named one of her tours by that name back in the 80's. I would understand if Beyonce had called Tina the Queen of Soul but the fact is that she didn't, she said the Queen. I have no idea where Aretha got one thing from the other. She needs to chill out and stop thinking that she is the greatest sh** on earth.

ROCEIAL DAWSON Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

HONEY-B
MAYBE BEYONCE MEANT THE QUEEN OF ROCK AND ROLL WHEN SHE WAS PRESENTING TINA TURNER.JUST LOOK AT HOW WHITE AMERICAN IS LOOKING AT BLACK RIGHT ABOUT NOW AND WHAT THEY ARE SAYING. IT WAS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL OF ARETHA FRANKLIN. SHE SHOULD'NT HAVE MADE IT PUBLIC. SHE COULD HAVE SEEN HER BACK STAGE LATER AND COMMENTED ON IT. I THINK IT WAS AN HONEST MISTAKE ON BEYONCE BEHALF, AN HUMAN ERROR, EVERYONE MAKES EVERY NOW AND THEN.

How cruel people can be. So many comments criticzing Aretha's weight. This has nothing to do with her being recognized as the "Queen" of Soul for which she is. I agree whole heartedly with Mary Daniels-Marks completely. She sees the realiazation of this story and is true to musical history.

beyoncehater Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 12:58 PM EST

Aretha Franklin has done more for music than this no talent hack.

some guy Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

Beyonce should have shown the proper respect because if you are a lister of R&B you'd know that. I think Beyonce gets credit for selling her body and her music is commercial garbage.

Dorothy Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

Aretha is definitely the Queen of Soul but Tina, in my opinion, is the Queen of her style of music. I feel that this is something else blown out of proportion. I don't think Beyonce was trying to disrespect Aretha at all.

Trina Cork Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

Aretha needs to get a real life! Beyonce just said that Tina was a Queen. She did not say the Queen of Soul! I think Aretha is being really petty. We all know she is the Queen of Soul why can Tina Turner just be a beautiful Queen. The woman will be 70 on her next birthday, and she is HOT! From one Black Queen to the next, "Tina you are Beautiful" We should all hope to look as good at 69!

duh Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

Last time I checked the queens name was Elizabeth.
These gals are all head cases.

Randolph Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

PLEASE..... some of these youth singers forget easy where did it come from. Am old school. James Brown. At that time all I remember, and there was only one woman who touched my heart... ARETHA. All I can say is Beyonce'.... whats her name "Tina Turner good as she is, cannot hold a note to Aretha. You better talk to your Mommy.

Sttef Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

I agree - - GET A LIFE!! I don't believe Beyonce was trying to dis Aretha nor do I think anyone cares if Aretha hangs on to her title as Queen. Tina Turner can stand on her own with the need of someone else's title. Tina is an awesome perform. Aretha needs to let it rest.

Sttef Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

Warren Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

You know, the lack of respect for those who paved the way is remarkable.
And no, I'm not an "oldie"..Aretha
Franklin deserves respect..it's nothing against Tina..but a noted
mis-step on Beyonce's part who by the
way is sooo overly impressed with herself her need to respect those that paved the way for her is blurred.
Her father's comments only display his own arrogance.
Reading the other comments you can
almost name the age categories and gender..too bad...if the younger generation in this country respected
their elders and those who have made
a way for them, perhaps they'd respect themselves more. Oh yes,
there is a difference in respect and
self delusions of grandeur.

dtc Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

she is the one and only queen of soul! and that's a fact jack you would have to had been around longer than yesterday to know why she is the queen.tina turner was more r&b and almost rock showmanship. nothing like the soulful franklin not ever dont you ever forget that it's just something for you to remember. its sad how the younger generation of know nots disrespect artist like aretha in print. they really got no soul just listen to their music its hollow without foundation computer generated their only talent is that they can curse and talk bad about killing their own kind.if aretha and tina were their age they would have did a driveby on each other by now.

Fred Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

maria Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

po po 'retha having that big fat ass with an ego to match pahleeeeeeeeeeeeze do yourself a favor keep your mouth shut nothing should go in or come out of it for at least another year, your behavior is unprofessional, ridiculous uncalled for. you know the girl did not write the copy, thats why they have writers! ya big dope

chuck Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

Steely Dan said it best:

"Hey nineteen, that's 'retha Franklin,
she don't remember the queen of soul..."

Tina is a diva or a godddess or whatever, Aretha is THE queen.
If you're the queen, it's OK to be miffed. You answer to no one. you're QUEEN. To the left, to the left.
CS

bruce Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 10:53 AM EST

She was certainly seen at the Grammys but I think wearing a tent might have more appropriate, it was kind of painfull on the eyes. I real queen would of known how to dress. I don't think we needed such a large does of religion from her if her government believes in the seperation of church and state.

Gizella Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

I agree with Amy, Aretha needs to check her ego and get over herself.

Brody_Warner Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

Beyonce has the right idea. It is about time we start crowning new legends. Aretha should be renamed to grandmother of soul. Her time in the spotlight has run out. I mean how long is Elvis going to be the king of rock-n-roll? The guy is is dead and all.

Donna Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 10:10 AM EST

I think Beyonce spoke with well intentions with reference to music.
Aretha Franklin was certainly the Queen of Soul in her time, there is no doubt, and Tina Turner redefined that genre with a style all her own puttig her in the ranks with Aretha, and I'm sure 5 years down the road Beyonce will acquire the same status as the music changes with the times.

JoeC Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

Come on, everyone, it was just a little comment by Aretha. No big deal here. Besides, everyone knows that the real Queen of Soul is Marie Osmond.

Amy Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

I think Aretha needs to grow up. Of course she's incredibly talented and a living legend and blah blah blah, but she needs to check her ego and get over herself. Here's the thing: for every talented person in the music industry there are 100, just as talented as special, who didn't have circumstances align in a way that allowed them to be rich, famous, and adored. Famous musicians are LUCKY, no matter how talented they are. Aretha needs to act like an adult who realizes how blessed she is, and stop acting so ridiculously entitled.

mary daniels-marks Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

I am so dissapointed with the big ado about Aretha and Tina. Aretha, to me is the Queen of Soul. Tina is the Queen of rock and roll. Aretha made her bones here in America. Tina made her's in Europe. Both ladies have had the talent to go on and on. Beyonce is just beginning and she is young. No doubt, she meant no harm. Perhaps, she should check her history.

Her father, even though a driving force in Beyonce's career, should stay out of this. He has not sang one note or made one step on the stage.

These are lessons that the younger stars have to learn. If Beyonce's name is remembered 20-30 years from now, she will understand.

The press had made a big stink out of an unintentional situation.

Aretha, Tina, Beyonce, fly above it all and stay strong. You are all wonderful.

SANDRA PARIS Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

I Feel Beyonce is allowed some errors like anyone else But Arethea should have have used some tactfullness in correcting her do I sense jealousy here.

RP Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

Lame! Obviously 'Queen' was not short for 'The Queen of Soul' when Beyonce was introducing Tina Turner.

Honestly, the only thing dumber than this misunderstanding are the commenters who think this somehow has anything to do with Aretha Franklin's weight. Some of y'all need to take your own advice and get over yourselves.

Don Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 08:59 AM EST

It is hard for anyone Aretha age to be childish, but she did it.

Jerry Liebrand Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

Aretha has 'earned' the title of "Queen of Soul" for as long as I can remember. No doubt it was before Beyonce knew of Aretha's 'nickname', and was said unknowingly. Aretha will ALWAYS be the Queen of Soul! A rose by any other name, will still smell as sweet!

Jeannie Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 08:41 AM EST

It is all for publicity, it got her back in the spot light for 2 seconds, it is a shame what people will say and do to get attention. Instead of this world being about giving to each other so many people have made it all about "me...me...me".

Don Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

I THINK ARETHA SHOULD CHILL OUT A LITTLE AT HER SIZE AND AGE SHE IS LIABLE TO SEND HER BP THROUGH THE ROOF AND HAVE HEART FAILURE,SHE SHOULD BE HAPPY JUST TO BE INCLUDED IN THE SAME SHOW AS TINA T,TINA IS AN HONEST TO GOD LEGEND SHE HELPED PUT THE ROCK IN ROCK AND ROLL,AND FOR HER
AGE TINA STILL ROCKS AND LOOKS GOOD DOING IT,SHE ABOUT WORE BEYONCE OUT DOING PROUD MARY.ARETHA YOU ARE STILL GOOD AT WHAT YOU DO,NO QUESTION BUT DON'T TRY TO HANG WITH TINA

PDF Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 08:15 AM EST

Aretha can be the queen of pork chops, ice cream and Doritos.

PDF Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 08:13 AM EST

Beyonce should be able to call anyone ANYTHING she wants. There are no rules. Grow up, Aretha. Be A Queen of Soul, not THE Queen of Soul. There is room for two, but in Aretha's case, it needs to be a big room.

jo Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 07:55 AM EST

Aretha will always be the queen! shows how shallow beyonce is!

Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 07:23 AM EST

I think Aretha should call 'Jenny'

BK Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 07:05 AM EST

QUEEN IS JUST A WORD. WHO CARES????? GROW UP ARETHA!!!!

Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 06:50 AM EST

Let's really piss of Aretha and call Tina "Empress of Soul" ..hahaha
At her age, Franklin is the 'Grandmother of Soul' anyway. Possibly Great Grandma ... bahaha

S. Dakota Linda Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 06:08 AM EST

For someone to make a comment like that tells me they have become insecure. If she did make the comment I agree....grow the heck up. And Beyonce' is young and going to make mistakes, she is only human after all. As are the rest of us Aretha. There are so many more important things going on in this world right now and people need to get focused on those, and quit worrying about the little things. Do you think the men and women fighting over in Iraq really give a rats butt who is the queen of anything?!

phyllis Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 05:21 AM EST

I think AF should chill out and grow up.Her little green horns are showing!

ucbillyd@hotmail.com Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 04:20 AM EST

Sin has no bounds when it can be fathamed that 'the Queen of "Anything Musical"' is not catigorized with exactly what the definition states. Size, color, age, presidential cast, slave, mother-of-pearl (if one knows quality can't be -vs- as Tina And Queen A.
Both Queenz's know it... Please step, step off. Love you Ladies. BillyD.

JUN Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 02:36 AM EST

Im SUprised with Aretha is charging at another bright and record setting star who is 300 times, i mean 30 years her junior. It is times like these that many celebrities have to find a reason to know that there are situations that they may find themselves in that they were not expecting. I dont think a formal apology will come from Ms. knowles on this matter because it was just an innocent and abrupt wrong use of terminology. I think that people are reading into this too much. ITs just like when Beyonce SUPPOSEDLY dissed Mariah. No bond to it. and whose to say the two wont do a duet or somewhat close to that on the Soul Train Music Awards later this season.

Susan Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 01:55 AM EST

Most pointless. Celebrity. Feud. Ever. Certainly didn't deserve any print (computer or otherwise)

Aretha Franklin needs to relax... there are more important things to worry about. She's living proof that diva attitudes don't die, they just grow old.

stephanie Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 01:47 AM EST

Get a life, AF

elleinnad Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 01:23 AM EST

BEYONCE CALLED TINA TURNER "THE QUEEN" - NOT "THE QUEEN OF SOUL"....SO THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT CAUSE BOTH TINA TURNER AND ARETHA FRANKLIN ARE QUEENS IN THEIR OWN RIGHTS AND THAT'S WHAT BEYONCE WAS TRYING TO SAY...I THINK ARETHA OVERREACTED

Sublime Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 01:08 AM EST

Aretha has earned her queen status as a singer as did Tina Turner. Just as apples and oranges have a relationship, being that they are both fruit, each have individual qualities that can't be compared. I think that Beyonce' complemented Tina Turner justifiably and without any intention to diminish credits that Aretha deserves. No one can see through Beyonce's eyes and interpret a situation for her other than Beyonce'. Beyonce' worked closely with Tina and saw in her something much more beyond the surface - a fabulous entertainer in every sense of the word. Mostly likely Beyonce would say the same about Aretha if she were able to work with her as she did with Tina.

Was there a coronation I missed? Neither Knowles nor Franklin have the final word on who the Queen of anything is. More ridiculous than the comments in the press release are those people have made arguing who's better.

soulbrotherman Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 12:26 AM EST

I think Beyonce should have thought first before making a public comment on stage, especially since she knew Aretha Franklin also was performing that night. Beyonce got caught up with the emotion of the moment performing with Tina Turner at the Grammys. She was not thinking or just did not care what anyone thought. Of course, her papa would stick up for his daughter because he knows she was being disrespectful and showed a lack of sensitivity making that comment on stage. He says Aretha should grow up. I say he should grow up and stay out of it and let his daughter be responsible and handle the situation herself instead of hiding behind people to protect her after stepping on someone's toes. Sorry. Beyonce's attitude was very arrogant at the Grammys.

Rosie Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 12:25 AM EST

Aretha IS being spoiled, especially considering she was there singing "gospel" music. Way to represent your Christianity, Aretha! But it's funny everyone agrees with me now about the overblown egos of celebrities, when they all jumped on my case after I criticized Ringo Starr for acting like a diva over the Regis & Kelly incident. What's the diff? Celebrities are just people--and they all have an inflated sense of self. It's up to us to not buy into it.

sweet J Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 12:04 AM EST

Assuming Aretha's statement is true, I think Aretha's comment is a sign of fear and insecurity. She is afraid of possibly ever being forgotten for all she accomplished in the music world. She is trying to hold on to what used to be, not what is right now in 2008.Regardless, there will always be only one Aretha Franklin and one Tina Turner. I would like to think there is enough room for both under queen status.

Ed Voll Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 12:04 AM EST

I think Aretha's whining shows no class for a so-called 'queen'.

BIZZIRED Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:38 PM EST

Aretha gave herself the title - she's needs to get over herself - granted it might take a crane and heavy duty construction equipment to get over her but if she wants some RESPECT she should start with respecting herself and stop wearing strapless gowns in public.

How do we know that Aretha wasn't joking? I find it funny that the same people who say Aretha was "snippy" and has a huge ego are the very same ones who reply with the very same snippy and over the top attitude. I don't think that Beyonce meant any offensive. She (and her writers) are probably not pop culture experts like all of us. I would love to see some musicians criticize the Grammy's for becoming the Alicia Keys (and, to a certain extent, Beyonce) Show. Please stop shoving them down our throats!

Jacques Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 08:31 PM EST

Aretha get over your fat self! Try getting on a treadmill or stairmaster, to try and prolong your life and health rather than worrying about some "title".

You can't believe everything you read or listen to from releases. Wow,from many of your comments you all sound hostile and uptight & you're talking about Aretha? Inhale and exhale slowly.

arby Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 07:21 PM EST

Whose the person with the tin ear.
Muddona an average singer at best.
Her publicist should get at least 75% of her ill gotten gains.
Aretha vs. Mudd.= A by a k.o.
Mudd couldn't carry her metronome.

Nazzy Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

I do not cobsider either Aretha Franklin or tina Turner a queen, but thatis the title (Queen of Soul) that has been ascribed to Aretha Franklin for years. It would not have been difficult for Bey-once to discover that little tidbit of information prior to going on stage and mis-speaking. Eveyone just needs to get over it, it IS NOT that serious!

starchild Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

actually that spoken word thing was written very poorly - it insulted every jazz and soul singer that's existed - implying tina had what they all had combined which is a crock

and i did notice the queen thing - she should have said queen of rock - the way she left it - it was like infringing on a trademark
