There Will Be Blood(shot) eyes if this melodrama goes on much longer

Jan 2, 2008, 04:36 PM | by Christine Fenno

Categories: Film, Oscars 2008

Twbb_l While I’m rooting for many of the 2007 films winning and/or vying for awards—among others, I loved  Atonement, Juno, Sweeney Todd, and the lovely-scary Spanish film The Orphanage—I must admit: I completely disagree whenever I see There Will Be Blood listed on the ubiquitous "Best of 2007" lists. I thought the performances were histrionic, and the disjointed story about the rise of a California oil tycoon could have been told in far less than (an interminable) 2 hours and 40 minutes. Blood clearly had a far different impact on almost every reviewer I've come across (including EW's own Lisa Schwarzbaum), yet I simply know that I enjoyed very little about it. (I felt the same disconnect back in 2000 when praise rained down on Joaquin Phoenix for what I thought was a laughably hammy—and ultimately Oscar-nominated—performance in Gladiator.)

I figure I can't be alone on this one. Did There Will Be Blood leave any of you feeling cold? Or is there some other recent case of an allegedly excellent movie or performance turning you into Marian the Contrarian? Let's hear about it!

I just finished watching this movie and turned to the internet to find some peace of mind that I was not the only one to find this movie tediously slow, Ill natured in theme, and obnoxiously disjointed. 2 hours and 40 minutes!!! The slow pace entertaining at first became a ruthless taunter as all I wanted was for the movie to end so I could have closure. I will agree that Daniel Day Lewis's acting was superb and created a character with tragic depth, but never could I recommend that a friend sit through this movie to witness that performance. What drives someone to tell a depressing story like this. I cant imagine pouring my life into something this painful and uninspiring. This further turns me from truly respecting the opinions and recommendations of Hollywoods so called top film critics.

Amit Chopra Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 01:28 PM EST

There Will Be Blood sucked just as much as Citizen Kane. And I had heard and read great things about them both. Both are sort of biographical without any central plot.

Annie Gottlieb Mon, Apr 21, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

Thank God. I hated it. I was wondering if I was crazy. I asked that question on my blog: http://ambivablog.typepad.com/ambivablog/2008/04/pretentious-twa.html

Boonedock82 Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 02:07 AM EST

To expand on what I was saying at the very end I must say that the one driving thing that pushed Mr. Plainveiw through the movie was the preservation of his assets, and to kill Eli in the manner it was done I would seem to me that would jepordize what he had been working for through tthe whole movie, this just does not seem fitting for his character. I must add that I found the musical score quite odd and off for the situations they were used in. They used alot of suspensful score to build up for a very long time before anything dramatic actually occured. I felt like I just wanted the score to go away at some points.

Boonedock82 Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 02:00 AM EST

For thoes that are suggesting that people watch more foreign film to truely apreciate this film is rather silly. I do watch various foreign films and a dramatic pause has nothing to do with why this movie does not build up to the awards and honors that it received. I found the story very compelling for the first hour, I found myself going I see that there is bad in this character but they maintained the posibility that he may be a very evil man. Where the film started to lose me was once his "brother" showed up, it was blatantly obvious that he was not what he said he was, for such an astute man as Mr. Plainveiw he should have seen through it much sooner than he did. I do have to admit that I started to be tried by scenes that did not add much to the plot of the story. I was very dissapointed by the ending of the story. I felt like there should have been alot more depth put into the father son relationship, and at the very end it seemed illogical for Daniel to kill Eli.

Sion Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 12:23 AM EST

Pugny, you must be a crack dealer!! I in fact watch lots of foreign films, and some are very good. Unfortunately this movie needs several bags of acid and half a pound of crack to make it to the "great" category. Do doubt about it.......a waste of celluloid if ever I saw one.

Pugny Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

The ignorance on this page--the inability for an audience to appreciate (or recognize) the literary arch of a character, the refusal to acknowledge the boldness of allowing a moment to hold (even if it means just watching a character for a second without any dialogue or anything happening), and the generally dismissive tone on this forum--is so disappointing. You should all try watching some foreign films. It might provide you with perspective.

Jeez, I learnt that movie companies give out some pretty good schwag to movie critics these days. Lets take the 10 ounces of crack you need to take to arrive at the firm belief that this shite passes for art and is worthy of Oscars? Are you serious? The only award I would give it is the rotten smelly turd award..

Nick Sun, Feb 3, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Boring, almost no central plot that they stick to, good cinematography, and good scenery (although there had better be if they dropped as much money as they obviously did on it). The actors all did well, but it was basically the writing and direction I found flawed. There was needless repetition of certain things, which basically implied the audience would be to stupid to remember, the director would shoot things for unnecessary lengths of time, and most of the dialogue shots stuck to one person, which, even if it was intentional, was stupid. The score was the worst I've ever heard in a movie. I even leaned over and whispered midway through, to the friend next to me, that this was "probably the most innappropriately scored movie I've ever seen". Personally I think people are only so taken with it because they know who scored it.
I've never seen a movie that dragged so much, and had so little to show for all the time it took. Boring, poorly directed, and poorly written. Hated it.

Jerry Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

This is a great run. I completely agree with Maureen that the first hour of "There Will Be Blood" is wonderful. But then, the narrative starts to wobble until it becomes almost laughably bad. I've never seen a film careen off the tracks so dramatically.

Now, Juno is nearly the opposite. It begins so absurdly (the drug store scene is unwatchable) but then, incredibly, rights itself and becomes a beautiful little character study. I agree that some of the dialogue is a bit unbelievable (a Soupy Sales reference?? REALLY) but the movie won me over. Delightful and wonderful.

And finally, I know this is heresy, but easily the most overrated movie, in the history of movies, is The Shawshank Redemption. A prison movie with... wait, don't tell me... an evil warden? Mediocre at best. (Maybe if I'd never seen Cool Hand Luke.)

Ray Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

I heartily concur. The movie is an overrated overacted overproduced overlong gusher of a movie. I wanted more substance and less sweep. It was actually so bad that the sadistic interactions between Plainview and the preacher served as comic relief.

Doug Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

I'm glad to have come across this article because I too am baffled by the critical acclaim. I think PT is a brilliant filmmaker, but watching this movie, it felt like the director was deliberately trying to make me squirm in my seat with restless boredom. Really, I felt like the victim of cinematic sadism. Also, I have never felt such a palpable sense of people wanting to walk out of the theater since I (regrettably) saw Vincent Gallo's ode to tedium, The Brown Bunny. I believe that critics feel that they are supposed to like this movie, and certain viewers like it because the critics have somehow convinced them that it's great. By the way - don't make the mistake that I did of making this a date movie. By the end of it, the girl I was out with hated me for taking her to it. And I can't say I blame her.

Brian Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

Juno was amazing. The writing was superb. I loved American Gangster. Atonement was ecellent int eha cting especially from Roanan, Knightley and MCavoy (who was robbed for his permonce in lat year's The Last King of Scotland). I am hoping that the 5 best picture nominess will be:

American Gangster
Atonement
Juno
No Country for Old Men
Sweeney Todd

I agree with Little Miss Sunshine. concensus. I did not undertand the hype about it. My wife and I rented it and was appalled by the performances. We stayed with just to see how it would end. That is a sign of a bad movie.

sally Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

My vote for worst move ever nominated in a category? The Titanic. The accents, the contrived class mobility, the un-sexy sex scene in the car. Don't get me started. Second worst? The Squid and the Whale - so boring and contrived. I didn't care about a single character. Most over-rated film ever nominated? Ghandi. What else? Well, I fell asleep during Dream Girls. Thought the PBS version of Pride & Prejudice greatly superior to the 2006 film. And found The Aviator rather dull, indeed.

Austin Fri, Jan 4, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

"The English Patient" is the most overrated film of all time. It is simply a dreadful, melodramatic and unmoving bore. And the one of the worst performances to win an Oscar has to be Nicole Kidman in "The Hours," another terrible movie.

drella66 Fri, Jan 4, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

The entire movie I was aware I was watching acting and it all felt like it was trying SO hard. Lewis is reigned in for most of the film until the end and then it becomes totally ridiculous...If this had been any actor besides DDL turning in this performance it would have been mocked to Sophia Coppola in Godfather 3 proportions...it is like he is channeling Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman for the last 40 mins. It is a shame because the film has so much potential and is pretty great for a period in the middle

Kevin Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 07:13 PM EST

Okay, so I have been defending most of the mivies here. So here are the critics darlings that disappointed me the most:

Blair Witch Project - this is scary? I scare very easily and this was just bad.

Brokeback Mountain - As a gay man, I wanted to fall in love with this movie. Instead, I admired it, but didn't connect with it emotionally like I wanted. I did enjoy it more on DVD. But I went and saw King Kong two or three times that same season at the theater because I connected with what it had to say about how society treats outsiders.

I also love Bjork but Dancer in the Dark's camera work gave me a headache.

That's all I can think of now.

denny Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

oooooooooh, I forgot about Sideways. I absolutely hated it after I saw it, because everyone was screaming "BEST MOVIE EVER!" and it was so, so far from that. With time away from it and another viewing, I don't hate it quite as much. It's just a nice, well-made-and-acted little picture, not worthy of excessive praise, but still a good film.

A similar film, for me, was The Royal Tenenbaums. Hated it the first time I saw it, especially after the hype. But after watching it for a film studies class, I realized that I just didn't get it the first time around.

chris Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

I'm probably the only person in the world who didn't like Forrest Gump. For some reason it just really annoyed me, and the fact that it beat the Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction at the oscars just made me loathe it even more. I am on the fence about TWWB, and I enjoyed No Country, even though I felt Tommy Lee Jones had no purpose in the movie..

Rebecca Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

I didn't care for Little Miss Sunshine at all. There was nothing original about it. I almost cried when Abigail Breslin was nominated for best supporting actress. I could've done what she did. Crash wasn't too bad. Million Dollar Baby was excellent as well as Pulp Fiction.

Has Atonement come out yet?

cpaz Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

For those who think that Juno is *ahem* "all quirk and no truth," I beg to differ. Yes, it's very quirky, maybe sometimes excessively quirky. But I'm not complaining. Know why? Because that's actually the way that some high schoolers are nowadays. And I'd know... I'm a 16 year old junior at a high school where a few kids have organized "bubble day", "free love day", and kids have often unintelligibly slang-heavy conversations. I thought that LSM was contrived (I'm glad to have found *someone* who agrees), but Juno, not so much.

Martin Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

I liked Juno, didn't love it.
Ditto Atonement, although the more I've thought about it, the more I've warmed up to it. That's good filmmaking right there - the kind that stays with you.
Didn't care for Sweeney Todd. At all.
Haven't seen There Will Be Blood.
Have you guys seen The Diving Bell and the Butterfly? A-ma-zing!
http://moviemartin.blogspot.com

Bug Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

Glad to know I'm not the only one who was annoyed with Juno/Ellen Page. Precocious to the point of unbearable. And why is Ellen Page getting all the attention when Jennifer Garner and the actors who play the parents give much better performances? Someone somewhere has decided Ellen is THE NEXT GREAT THING. Eh, she's not.

Maureen Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

RLS 789: I share your pain on Sideways. It actually turned me off to Paul Giamatti. However, I know I'm absolutely alone in my dislike of Knocked Up. I love the return of the smart, R-rated comedy, but this was more like the return of all those CBS sitcoms with the schlubby husband and beautiful wife. I liked Seth Rogan and Katherine Heigl, but Paul Rudd has become my new movie killer, taking over for Ben Affleck. (That's a good topic, EW -- actors who kill movies by their mere presence.)

Maureen Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

I give the first hour of There Will Be Blood an A. I give the second hour the benefit of the doubt with a C-, despite characters that disappear and plot points that just don't make sense. The last scene makes so little sense and is so over the top, that it can only merit an F-. I get what PTA was going for. But he didn't get there. Thank you, Christine Fenno, for being one of the few reviewers to call it right.

elaine Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

atonement was amazing...really...it should win...it was a very literary book that i was scared they would horribly mess up and they didn't...amazing acting...

Keil S. Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 12:12 PM EST

These kinds of topics always give the local morons an excuse to come out of the woodwork.

Examples of idiocy: people hating Pulp Fiction and Sideways, but loving Crash

I'm going to take a shower now.

rob Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

You're the only one.

cbc Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

Oh and I thought Little Miss Sunshine was one of the most contrived movies to come out last year. Everyone had quirks just for the sake of it and the whole movie just felt forced and false. I really want to like Juno but I'm afraid when I see it its going to be like LMS. All quirk and no truth.

rls789 Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

My all time example of a beloved, critically acclaimed movie that I loathed is Sideways. I still consider that a movie that a handful of critics praised and for some unknown reason it snowballed into the biggest bandwagon. God, I hated that movie.
A more recent example is The Savages, although I don't feel so strongly about this one. I just think it wasn't all that great, yet it's getting so much critical attention.

cbc Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

Gladiator was such an overrated movie and never should have won an Oscar. That was the year of Crouching Tiger. Gladiator was a Braveheart wannabe. As far as There Will Be Blood goes I have not yet seen it. However, I have read multiple pieces stating it as one of the most brilliant yet challenging movies to come out in a while. I think that this movie will not be for everyone especially if people are expecting it to fit into the mold of a normal film.

tad Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

Pulp Fiction was definitely one of teh most overrated films I have ever seen. Boring dialogue, excessive violence (and I actually like violent movies) and just no point at all. The whole time I kept waiting for it to be over and it just kept going for ever and ever!! Still don't see what all the hype was about.

Eli Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

hey RICH, only because its playing in two theatres doesn't mean people haven't seen it. I saw it at a SAG presentation for the SAG nominations weeks ago. This is an entertainment magazine, and website, which voters for SAG, GG, and even the Oscars turn to for opinions and some online fun.

KevinB Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

I am very excited about seeing this movie. I actually love long movies and, with the exception of Punch-Drunk Love (which I hated), I love PT Anderson movies. But there are two critically acclaimed movies (and Best Picture winners) from recent memory that I absolutely loath: Crash and Titanic. I didn't really HATE Titanic at first, but the praise that people have for the movie is unwarranted and it did NOT deserve Best Picture over LA Confidential. Crash is just a straight-up terrible movie with every cliche known to man filling up the bulk of its 2-hours (Munich should have won Best Picture that year...Crash shouldn't have even been nominated).

Mozz Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

Thank YOU! I AGREE!!! and while I loved No Country for old men, I felt little love for JUNO... because smart mouthed teen-agers do not amuse me anymore... come on, Dawson's Creek banter but better acted. Jennifer Garner however should get an academy award, she's the heart of that movie, and Ellen Page has been over-hyped. But with THERE WILL BE BLOOD, i feel the critics are trying to crown movies that are mediocre. I keep hearing critics say this was the best year in Movies in a while, but I think that's just buzz words. The reality is far worse, it has been a mediocre year all around. Except for Devil knows your DEAD. That was pretty awesome.

Josh Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 11:02 AM EST

I absolutely loved There Will Be Blood. I went to the theater with eager anticipation, but worried that it would be a critical fave that left me cold (a bit like No Country for Old Men, as much as I love the Coen Brothers). I left the theater with my favorite movie of the year, and in my opinion, arguably the best movie I have seen in quite some time. Despite my objection to two hour plus films, the time flew by and I was not tempted to look at my watch at all, such as during American Gangster.

And, I am not a PTA fan - thought Boogie Nights and Magnolia were OK, nothing special (possible inclusions on overrated lists) and chose not to see Punch Drunk Love.

As for overrated films (not necessarily movies I did not like, though), I have to include Juno and American Gangster. Really looking forward to Juno after hearing buzz and knowing it came from the director of Thank You for Smoking. Good, but not great. I would also include American Gangster, which was nothing special.

denny Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

Definitely did not get all the love for Little Miss Sunshine. Sure, it was cute, and Abigail Breslin gave a great performance, but a Best Picture of the Year nominee?!?!? Are you freaking kidding me?!?!?

Martin Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

I'm not too sure about this movie. It looks like it will be a chore to get through, kinda like Gangs of New York. However, the one good thing about Gangs was Daniel Day Lewis, so maybe his performance will redeem this flick as well, should I not like the overall monstrosity. I was underwhelmed by "Little Miss..." and was entertained by "Crash". "Million Dollar Baby" is rightly recognized as a great movie, due to the excellence of the three leads. I'm rooting for "Atonement" to pickup some steam. That movie held my interest throughout, unlike the overrated "English Patient". I have yet to see "No Country..." and am looking forward to it very much. I'm on the fence about "Sweeney Todd" as Burton's movies have a tendency to be overhyped in recent years. Oh yeah, go see "Atonement" if you like the idea of a WWII backdrop and strong acting by everyone involved. The movie is sure to be up for its score.

Chris G Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

yeah where the heck is There Will Be Blood playing?? not in CT...

kalvatron Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 08:49 AM EST

Easily the most overrated movie of the past few years has to be Million Dollar Baby. Mawkish and heavyhanded.

Rich Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 08:43 AM EST

Nice rant. But Boxofficemojo shows that There Will Be Blood is only playing in TWO theaters. Why ask your audience for an opinion one way or another when 99% not only haven't seen it, but don't have access to a theater showing it?

Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 08:37 AM EST

I actually like Live Free or Die Hard. And my favorite animated movie was Meet the Robinsons. Absolutely hilarious.

"You are grounded, until you die." Made me laugh out loud, the way she said it.

Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 08:37 AM EST

Ben Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 07:37 AM EST

Hands down, Little Miss Sunshine. Saw it last year cause it looked cute and quirky, and I hated it. It was nasty people acting weird for the sake of acting weird. Worst movie of the year (I'm still disgusted by it). Juno looked to be like this, but it was a sweet movie. Yes, she was precocious, but as a teacher of junior high, i see kids like this daily who are precocious and sassy and fully realized.

MS E Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 02:45 AM EST

I loved Crash. Hated Lost in Translation, was bored to death. Hated Blair Witch Project. Did not think it was scary at all, I fell asleep in the theatre when I went to see it.

G Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 02:42 AM EST

I cannot for the life of my understand the obsession with Clive Owen. His performance in Closer? Amazing. His performance in Elizabeth II? The exact same thing. Ummm in one movie he is a man caught up in a love quadrangle in the 21st century, and the other he is a PIRATE. And would it kill him to stop talking through his teeth?

There's two that come to my mind:

1) Jerry MacGuire. After all the praise, what was so great about that film? It didn't have me at hello. I kept waiting for it to say goodbye.

2) The Science Of Sleep. I really wanted to like this film being that it's directed by Michel Gondry, who also directed Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (now THAT was a great film). But this went on and on and on.... TSOS put me to sleep. It was THAT bad.

I agree with all those who were dismayed by the "Oscar-winning Best Picture" Crash. I rented this movie because it won Best Picture but when I got to the part where Terrence Howard called his mother and said, "I'm f---ing a white woman" I turned off the movie. For the life of me I will never understand why "Crash" won Best Picture. "Crap" is more like it.

I loved Sweeney Todd and Superbad, but I hated Knocked Up and Once. I plan to see Juno and No Country for Old Men this week. Any recommendations?

Joaquin Phoenix was incredible in Gladiator.

rachel Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 11:21 PM EST

Amen about Joaquin Phoenix in 'Gladiator'. I kept waiting for the greatness of his performance to happen, but nothing came. And this is coming from someone who L-O-V-E-S Joaquin Phoenix.
'The Queen' sucked bad - boring as all hell.

I loved Crash, even though I understand folks' reservations. Please don't write off Paul Haggis. You owe it to yourself to see In The Valley of Elah when it is released on DVD.

bonnylass Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

I completely agree with those below who hated Crash. It's utterly false and ridiculous on every level. I could never watch another Paul Haggis movie again.

Kevin Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 09:48 PM EST

I loved Juno!

kelly Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 09:47 PM EST

I didn't like Juno and don't understand all the praise! I felt the dialog was completely unrealistic and the pop culture references irritating and the ending was hard to buy. Trying too hard and too precious!

Sara Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 09:25 PM EST

I am so, so with you on this. Nothing happened in this movie - the character of Plainview was an obsessive freak at the beginning and he was an obsessive freak at the end and he never went on a journey. Using Paul Dano in two roles was confusing and sloppy. The music was just annoying.

Kevin Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

To Christine and others who've seen TWBB and didn't like it,

Have you seen Anderson's other movies (did you like them: Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love) and how would you compare them to TWBB?

Your answers may determine whether I spend my money on TWBB.

J Welsch Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

There Will be Blood was far too long, and didn't have any point whatsoever. I was very disappointed.

Daniel Day Lewis is an amazing actor, but you put anyone else in that role and the movie is just awful. He made it interesting, and I only went because I wanted to see "The Butcher" from Gangs of New York again.

Boo.

Crystal Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

TWBB was just so...WEIRD that I kind of look back on it fondly. I thought Paul Dano was outstanding. But I stilll can't figure out if I liked the damn thing.

I will also ditto that I didn't like Crash at ALL. And I've gave it a 2nd viewing too - bleh.

peachmahoney Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 08:32 PM EST

I'm dreading seeing this movie. PT Anderson does little or nothing for me. The running time is a total put off and the cartoonish facial hair and dour soundtrack also make me want to run in the opposite direction.I did read the book years ago and I enjoyed it.
I'm always a little wary of movies that everyone says "you have to see this" because they usually disappoint. Like Gladiator and The English Patient.

Em Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 08:00 PM EST

Knocked Up was PAINFULLY UNFUNNY! People tear me to shreds when I say that, but I saw it in theatre once and rented it once, and hated it both times.

Transformers = Worst Movie of the past decade

Kevin Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

I forgot to say I also loved No Country For Old Men and Into The Wild, which I feel hasn't gotten the love it deserves. Hopefully, the Golden Globes and Oscars will remedy that.

Kevin Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

First, let me say that Magnolia may be my fave film of all time. I also liked Boogie Nights. Both were long but very engaging. So I am clearly a fan of Anderson's work. However, I didn't adore Punch Drunk Love like the critics. I thought its tone was inconsistent. So, I am not sure about There Will be Blood. I will probably still see it when it hits Tulsa. I usually agree with the critics more than my friends. I have seen Juno, In The Valley of Elah, Michael Clayton, Sweeney Todd, & I'm Not There and loved them all. But I also loved Spider Man 3 and enjoyed I Am Legend. On the other hand, I find I don't enjoy many comedies, certainly not the ones loathed by critics, but I have a hard time with critic-blessed comedies, too. I tend to watch comedies on DVD. Maybe that's the problem. Maybe you need an audience around you. Knocked Up was interesting, but not that funny. Superbad, which I watched last night (at home) was funnier. Of course, I still think What's Up Doc? is the funniest.

I look forward to There Will Be Blood, but every time I glimpse Before the Devil Knows You're Dead on a best-of-2007 list I rant to whoever is in my vicinity. I spent half the movie blatantly laughing at the awful acting and outrageous script, and the other half begging my best friend to walk out with me.

Jay Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

Haven't seen "There Will Be Blood," but I HATED Joaquin Phoenix's "Gladiator" performance. He was horrible. I can't believe he was nominated for an Oscar. What a crock.

Also, I thought Juno was overrated, too. Not bad, just...eh.

Liz taylor Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 06:13 PM EST

Gladdiaatoorrrr!
I also thought Joaquin's performance was hammy. Every year there is a movie that is praised to the heavens and I can never figure out why. This year it is Michael Clayton. I thought Clooney was on movie star auto-pilot and the story was all over the place. Atonement is over-rated too. Nice looking movie but for me no real heft.

Stephanie T. Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 06:03 PM EST

Superbad is one of those films where you see it in the theater for the first time you think, eh ok. It was funny but not hillarious Then you see it again on DVD or on cable and it was hillarious. Was Superbad funnier than American Pie? Yes. Was it funnier than Porky's(the first one, the sequels were pure trash!)? No. Still Seth Rogen knows how to write well.

Oscar-buzz movies that left me cold?

Uh, Crash, anyone? Seriously, I couldn't make it through the first hour of that movie without thinking "Here is the most blunt, non-nuanced, hackneyed attempt at audience exploitation that I've ever sat halfway through." Truly terrible movie, and yet it won an Oscar - go figure.

If "Crash" was meant to teach us that people are more complicated than being black or white, it sure chose to do so in a way devoid of gray, where all characters were caricatures drawn in black or white.

I hated "No Country For Old Men". How can anyone love a movie with no soundtrack, a misplaced Woody Harrelson, the annoying rambles of Tommy Lee (in a role ill fit for this movie) and no real ending whatsoever? The reaction from many folks I know is that they liked it until the surface gets scratched.

IMHO, No Country was typical of what a lot of the "high minded" movie reviewers tend to like. It was different than most Hollywood fare, featured some decent performances and a "unique" take on an old storyline. But it also had a lot of what regular movie goers tend to hate, like the stuff I mentioned about the lack of plot, soundtrack, a real ending, etc.

Truth said, I stopped taking Liza Schwarzbaum seriously a few years ago when she printed a review that stated in so many words that she'd never be objective while reviewing flicks. Who wants a snobby reviewer that takes pride in being a snob?
