SAG Awards: The best and worst moments

Jan 28, 2008, 01:00 AM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: '30 Rock', 'The Office', 'The Sopranos', Film, Television

Janekrakowski_l I'm a just bit underwhelmed after watching last night's SAG Awards. From the collective "Who let those guys back in?" groan (re: The Sopranos winning everything), to the part in the middle where something meaningful was taking place but I fell asleep, to a Tom Cruise sighting during which he barely raised his voice, let alone sounded wacko... it all evoked a big "meh" from me. Better make that a big "blërg," in honor of SAG winner and lover of lunch Liz Lemon (and, of course, our own Dawnie Walton). The ceremony wasn't bad. It just wasn't awesome, aside from Daniel Day-Lewis' speech and Angelina's boob almost falling out on the red carpet. We're sorry to those (two) of you who wanted a live blog; instead, here are PopWatch's highly subjective Best and Worst moments of the evening...

BEST MOMENTS

Jane Krakowski's dress (pictured). It looked like Dippin' Dots.

• Quote of the night, from Tina Fey: "You've just given an award to a hat rack."

•  Lifetime-achievement-award recipient Charles Durning redeeming himself (and Burt Reynolds' pushiness) by greeting his microphone: "Hello, mic!" Then, during his standing O, Durning's wheelchair-bound wife apologetically mouthing, "I can't get up!" It was pretty sweet.

• Daniel Day-Lewis' speech was just perfect. He talked about daring to "go back into the arena one more time, with longing and self-doubt jostling in the balance," and then somehow easily segued his way into a tribute to Heath Ledger, citing him as one actor whose work inspired a sense of regeneration in him. "In Monster's Ball, that character that he created seemed to be almost like an unformed being, retreating from himself, his father, this life — even us, and yet we wanted to follow him." Powerful stuff, and so classy.

• Tina Fey, Jenna Fischer, and Julie Christie all alluded to the WGA strike in support of writers and out-of-work production crews during their acceptance speeches.

• Javier Bardem looked -- and sounded -- so hot.

Honorable Mention: Ruby Dee's glasses

Check out the evening's worst moments after the jump.

WORST MOMENTS

"My name is ____, and I am an actor." What is this, AA?

• A digital image of Alec Baldwin won Best Actor in a Comedy Series. Ditto Queen Latifah, Kevin Kline.

• Justin Chambers' future is so bright he needs shades indoors.

• Josh Brolin, your team just won! There's no need to bully us.

• Having to do a double-take each time the announcer said "Welcome back to the SAG Awards. Here's Blair Underwood!" got tiring.

• Debbie Matenopoulos called Jenna Fischer "Julie" on the red carpet. (FYI: Jenna was a complete doll about it, but should have said something like "Thanks, Daria" while walking away.)

• The Debster also made a vaguely unintelligible and definitely offensive comment to Judith Light and Michael Urie. Something like "So you'd rather be a nanny than a nurse?" What? (The dumbfounded looks on their faces almost made this a Best Moment.)

Honorable Mention: Nikki Blonsky screaming "OUR MOVIE! EVERYBODY LIKE IT?" Yikes.

List your own favorite-and-not moments, below.

Nanny than a Nurse comment by the idiot Debbie.... what was she thinking?

I agree with almost everybody's comments of best's and worst's,here, but can we just pause for a second and give that Mexican pit-bull in "No Country" a nod there for swimming against current with that do or die attitude? It was the only good part of that movie for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Coen Brothers, are you really proud of this flick??? Get a real life, you're pushin' fear and depravity and movies with no endings and no sense to a new low......but that's just me, guys. Martgirl2008

Denise Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 11:08 PM EST

Mary --

OMG. See "My Left Foot."

Dan Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

This year was a bit boring, but I seriously had no idea what a badass Charles Durning is! Normandy! And I definitely noticed his wife mouthing "I can't get up!" That was a little awkward. Something about Zak Efron really annoyed me. Little twirp.

beespost Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

Whatever happened to classy interviewing on the red carpet? I like it when they are asked who they brought to the awards show and introduce them. I thought it was very sweet that Ryan Gosling brought his sister. You could see the love between them, and they both wore pins honoring Heath Ledger. I also loved the tribute to Charles Durning. Instead of the usual jumbled clips of their movies, they actually did a chronological bio of the man. It was very touching and made me respect him all the more.

Baba Ghans Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 05:47 AM EST

I totally agree with another comment. Best Actress award should have gone to Marion Cotillard for her FLAWLESS performance as Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose. She was incredible!!!

Karen T Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 08:30 PM EST

Did anyone else think that Marion Cotillard got robbed? Julie Christie is a wonderful actress, but seemed far too articulate for someone with advanced Alzheimers. Marion perfectly captured the essence of Edith Piaf and was in nearly every scene. I still think about her performance, and it's been months since I saw "La Vie En Rose." I suppose foreign language actors often get short shrift for their work, though.

Troy Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 05:41 PM EST

All these young tarts to choose from, and yet the three best looking ladies of the night were Julie Christie, Sally Field & Glenn Close.

Seon Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

Vanessa Williams was stunning. I didn't even notice her co presenter. She delivered. Debra Messing was a nervous wreck!

Laura Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

I LIKE the "My name is..., and I am an actor" spots. They usually guarantee a laugh. Brad Garrett's "...and I don't know what the hell I'm doing here" from two years ago cracked me up!

to Rblues Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

Harry Dean Stanton played the dad in "Pretty in Pink." When I read your post, I was like, WHA--?? Glad you cleared that up. Those 3-namers will get ya every time... ;-)

RBlues Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

Yes I meant Jeffrey Dean Morgan (he's so hot I forgot his name)! What a goofball I am! Where did I get Harry Dean Stanton from? Is that another actor or did I totally make it up?

Mary Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

I was just happy there was a REAL awards show on! Also Daniel-Day Lewis got me on Oprah when he wanted to talk about Heath Ledger and he really got me at the SAG Awards. That man is very classy and paid a huge amount of respect to a young actor who died way to young. I have never seen any of Dainel's movies except Gangs of New York but he seems so brilliant that I may have to go rent them now. Thank you for a beautiful speech!

To SM Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

Julie Christie is 66 years old, believe it or not. A gifted actress and a natural beauty.

chandler Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

I couldn't stand Mickey Rooney. I know he's respected, but him standing there waiting for an applause and standing ovation made me absolutely SICK. Go present the award like ur supposed to! His segment literally felt like half of the ceremony. Thank God for Ruby Dee--who looked absolutely gorgeous--for doing her job and continuing her award presentation when everyone was applauding her. And I loved Daniel Day-Lewis's and Julie Christie's speeches. Can't wait to hear them at the Oscars!

diana Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

Debbie Matenopoulos - blechhh.

mcat Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

Best- Daniel Day, Julie Christie, Javier, Tina Fey.
Absolute Worst - Matthew McCoughnehey (whatever) & Kate Hudson, Zac Efron (way out of his league, even among these bad actors)and Tom Cruise because he's tiny and scary and really not talented in the least.

SM Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

To clarify about Mickey Rooney's comments about the "tie" in Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Made-for-Television movie, he meant in the nominations. All categories are supposed to have only 5 nominees which are the result of the top 5 vote getters in the initial nomination process. By a tie, Mickey meant that there were 6 top vote getters and therefore 6 nominees instead of the usual 5. And exactly how old is Julie Christie? She looked quite dated in her film Away from Her but looked positively stunning when accepting her award.

Mandy Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

Daniel Day-Lewis took the words right out of my mouth with his tribute to Heath Ledger. It was so gracious of DDL to use his own moment in the spotlight to recognize the talent and potential of a fantastic actor who was taken from us far too soon.

Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

Re: RBlues "Javier Bardem--muy caliente'! (I thought he was Harry Dean Stanton at first look)." - I think you mean Jeffrey Dean Morgan, at least I hope that is what you mean. They do totally look alike.

To Stephanie Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

Is everybody on crack this morning? TG didn't say anything offensive, so WTF are you talking about? WHAT chick was in a wheelchair? HUH?

Lola Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Bozo is right. I never said one word about anybody stealing anybody else. Try actually READING the posts, moron.

TDewey Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

To those who are bashing Daniel Day Lewis over his Heath Ledger comments- it doesn't matter if he didn't know him- he was simply impressed with the man's talents and paid tribute to him at an actor's forum. It's called class folks. Those who don't have it can't see it apparently. Are we so cynical that we cannot just accept DDL's tribute as a selfless gesture without looking for motives? My favorite comment is the guy who said he spoke about Ledger to ensure he'd win the Oscar. That is so dumb on so many levels.

Joe Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

Best speech (by far): Daniel Day Lewis, who was classy and clearly genuine; I don't sense he was acting
Most unintentionally dotty speech: Ruby Dee (I know she's old), who rambled on about her books and CDs, and clearly forgot her "AG" cast members when trying to mention them
Most intentionally dotty speech: Julie Christie, who initially couldn't find the stage (you know, that big empty space in front) and then proceeded to forgetfully name off some people (I think she said "last of all..." about ten times), then saved herself by saying she was still in character. Classy allusion to the strike, though.
Scariest speech: Josh Brolin, who managed to offend Woody Harrelson, Javier Bardem, the Coen Brothers, his bosses (you know, the studios that backfired so awfully but are still paying you), and even the audience - at least, the ones that didn't like the ending. At least he didn't insult Mickey Rooney, who probably thought HE was Charles Durning when demanding a standing o.

Stephanie T. Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

I like Janes dress but the necklace looked like a bowl of citrus Trix.

TG you are not amusing. The woman was in a wheelchair.

Patsy Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 08:51 AM EST

Best : Viggo Mortensen, Daniel Day Lewis,Julie Christie, Tina Fey. All very classy
Worst: Are we supposed to call him General Tom Cruise now? Where was his big medallion? And is he too cool to smile?

Karen Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 08:08 AM EST

Who said that Julie Christie lives in "Whales"??? Did you go to school at all?? The country is Wales and is part of Great Britain along with Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. This country is so insular it's depressing....

old enough Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 07:31 AM EST

julie christi lives in whales?? does she live with jonah?

LittleOsama Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 06:49 AM EST

The fat girl from Hair Spray should just fly away for good!!!!!!!!!!!!

mary Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 05:56 AM EST

How is Debbie Matenopoulos still employed?

Hmmmm Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 03:53 AM EST

The thought of Angie's breasts lactating makes my mouth water.
You have to hand it to the British; they know how to deliver a line.

Bozo Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 03:17 AM EST

Bob...Who is Mickey Rooney? He's the man that Laurence Olivier called the greatest actor alive. Kyle...the word is 'senile', not 'cenial'. Lola...you cannot "steal" someone from someone else. If Brad had wanted to stay with Jennifer he might have had an affair or a fling but he wouldn't have left her. And remember, stealing is something Jennifer has never accuse Angelina of doing.

Ande Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 02:08 AM EST

Just a short comment. Though I agree it would have been nice for the producers to have added a few more pictures of Heath Ledger in their tribute, too much more might have been insulting to the families of the other people that died last year. The same sort of thing happened when John Ritter died right before the awards show season. Everyone thought he should get more of a tribute because he died unexpectedly and most recently, but the producers have to be fair and even.

Kyle Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 01:29 AM EST

What was up with Mickey Rooney? I'm pretty sure he said that the award he presented was a tie, of course it wasnt but he kept going on about it? Is he cenial?

Kyle Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 01:29 AM EST

Rosie Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 01:26 AM EST

I agree with a previous poster--30 Rock's funny, but The Office is in a whole other league, because those characters aren't really characters... there's so much subtlety that you don't even pick up on the motivations, insecurities, etc. behind their actions unless you watch the show and really know the characters. They are "real" people. 30 Rock's got great jokes, but I don't feel like I know the characters as well and don't care to. The Office is handled more tenderly.

maribel Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 01:20 AM EST

To George: Of course A Knight's Tale wasn't Oscar caliber, but Brokeback Mountain was just the beginning of Heath's new path - he was making smarter career choices that truly showed his potential. It wasn't the "most distinguished career" because he died at only 28. Given time he would have kept giving us the type of performances he was starting to give. Give DDL and Heath a break. DDL was totally sincere and I can't believe people are seriously questioning his motives for dedicating his award to him. The SAG award is from actors to actors, so he was honoring an actor that died too young.

George Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 12:45 AM EST

I think Josh Brolin was drunk, or high.

Thought the DDL thing was over the top. Yeah, Heath gave some nice performance here and there, but overall, not the most distinguished career. The only reason he is considered so highly is because of 1 movie, "Brokeback". yeah, he has made some interesting choices, but that doesn't mean they were quality performances - "A Knight's Tale"? "Casanova"? "The Brothers Grimm"? And yeah, DDL, Heath was the performance we were ALL talking about in "Monster's Ball". Sorry, I feel bad for Heath and his family, but the man was not the second coming of Brando or Olivier. Granted, we'll never know, but let's keep things in perspective.

30 kicks the Office's @$$ anyday. Overall, a decent show, and possibly the only one we'll see all season.

Lisa Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:42 PM EST

What a relief that I am not the only person wondering, "Why is Mickey Rooney standing off to the side? Is he expecting a standing ovation?" It was also frustrating knowing that the Sopranos were going to take everything-enough. So happy about Tina Fey and DDL- come on throw Hal Halbrook a bone! It also seemed to me that the Heath tribute was tacked on- like, oh crap we finished the tribute video-no worries, just throw his picture up from the gay cowboy movie, no worries that the music ends. I am assuming that it was suppose to be an emotional tug (being that other celebs that died the same time as he did were included, with music and clips). I always wonder when they show the In Memoriam how horrible the people in the audience must feel-the people they are showing are their co-workers, not just people on the screen. Finally-keep Tom Cruise away from the camera. Oh yeah, was Burt Reynolds drunk?

Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:37 PM EST

Worst:
Learning how many great actors have never either been nominated for or won a SAG award!?!

I'm talking about Ruby Dee too for all you haters....show some respect!

dee Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

Worst:
(1)Casey Affleck chewing
(2)An Elder statesman in the movie biz who will go nameless out of respect (i.e. not Durning).

Best:
(1)Learning about Charles Durning's WWII record.....hardly a person in the room was fit to shine his shoes
(2)Day-Lewis showing us what the definition of class....

Judgement call
I actually liked Josh Brolin's banter with the cast...it showed their chemistry with each other

Come on when was the last time anyone saw Ruby Dee win any award? What is she 80? Give her a break.
Stop bitchin' its only a SAG award.

lola Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

Loved Angie looking happy; hated the Gandolfini win.

--read my blog at http://fashionpoirot.blogspot.com

Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

Angelina Jolie parading around yet again with her stolen man meat, like the shameless wh0re she is, was the absolute worst. And "Mr. Jolie" (Angelina's b!tch, whichever) is looking more and more lobotomized with each passing day.

N8 Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:47 PM EST

Mickey Rooney's self-indulgent "look at me" speech was one of the most painful things I've had the displeasure of witnessing.

RBlues Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

-I also thought Brolin's speech was tongue-in-cheek sacasm--I thought it was funny. (Remember, most of them have been drinking for a couple of hours).
-Tina Fey's was very sweet.
-I agree with the idea for a new category for veteran actor in a cameo role (the SAGs are SO sentimental).
-Javier Bardem--muy caliente'! (I thought he was Harry Dean Stanton at first look).
-Angelina was glowing. Very beautiful!
-I missed a few minutes and I actually thought Mickey Rooney was getting some sort of special award--that was wierd, but he is really old, give him a break.
-Tom Cruise-WHY?
-I love Award Shows so that was fun!

dsven Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:13 PM EST

Yeah Rhonda, I'm with you, I thought Brolin's speech was pretty sharp. I think people mistook sarcasm for arrogance. Though I could have done without the nose picking.

Rebekah Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 08:53 PM EST

My best moments were Heath Ledger's picture at the end of the "In Memoriam" and Daniel Day-Lewis's acceptance speech dedication to Heath Ledger.

TomO Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 08:35 PM EST

I was personally thrilled that Julie Christie won and that she was there, as she normally lives peacefully in Whales. Daniel Day-Lewis was very moving. His dedication of his award to Heath Ledger was a very classy moment from a very classy human being and the best actor on the planet.

Rhonda Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

From what I've read I know I'm in the majority here, but I thought Josh Brolin was hilarious. He knew it was an ensemble award-it was obvious that he was saying everything tongue-in-cheek. As for having it easy 'cause of his name-maybe in the beginning but James Brolin hasn't been a presence in many years so everything Josh now has he's definitely worked for and earned on his own merit.

Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

Yeah DDL's speach was a tad odd, but I think it's because as with everything else he tends to ham it up just a bit much. A simple dedication would have worked without the long drawn out unique and perfect pauses. But what do you expect? The guy's an actor after all, he probably can't help himself from turning everything into an opportunity to emote. I too was rooting for Viggo god awful suit or not. Also for Ellen Paige, but Ruby Dee had to be the real shocker. I think SAG needs a new catagory - Best Veteran Cameo so that the real supporting actors don't have to compete with that.

Shelly Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 08:04 PM EST

Debra Messings dress made it look like she had 2 false boobs just about the real ones, and there were no real ones. Very strange looking!!!

danielle Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 08:04 PM EST

30 rock's submission for the best ensemble category of, "I called this meeting to talk about what happened last night at Kenneth's party..." took the cake for me.

tg Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

I like the "I am an actor" speeches. I think they're mostly fun. Love Jane's. Mickey Rooney was just milking it for applause and a standing O. Charles Durning was great. Burt Reynolds was a d*ck. Ellen Burstyn looked beautiful as did Julie Christie and Ruby Dee. Daniel Day's speech was wonderful. Tina Fey rocks!! In fact, she 30 Rocks!! Kinda sucked no nom for Depp.

bob Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

-When Mickey Rooney said it was a tie, I expected all six women to be up on stage. His whole speech was stupid, and his wife looked silly kissing at the crowd. Who the hell is Mickey Rooney anyway? He just played second fiddle to Judy Garland in about 100 movies with the same plot back when he was a teenager.
-And after all that meandering, "Ms. Latifa" didn't even show up. She beat out Ellen Burstyn AND Gena Rowlands for Gods sakes!
-Nikki Blonski is annoying. She reminded me of Nia Vardalos. Here today, forgotten tomorrow.
-I liked Daniel Day Lewis' tribute to Heath Ledger.
-I was sad when I learned Deborah Kerr had died. She was one of the best actors ever.
-I'm tired of seeing fat John Travolta and his awful hair plugs.
-Debra Messing looked either really drunk or pissed off that she had to co-present with Zac Efron. And he nose looked so weird.
-Now even Brad Pitt is falling victim to the fringe hair. Ick.
-Why did Kate Hudson and Matthew Macconaghey present best actor? Dumb.

Jennifer Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

I personally could live with all awards ceremonies just being a person reading the winners like the Golden Globes. (Minus the talking idiots, of course.) All I want to know is who was nominated and who won.

jes Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

Mike, I am in stitches just by reading your comment. I can only imagine what it felt like in person. Your partner is funny.

bob Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

-Josh Brolin was really creepy.
-I liked when Jane Krakowski said 'I'm Johnny Depp, and I'm an actor.' That was funny.
-I'm glad Ruby Dee and Julie Christie won their awards. They are two of the classiest people.
-Charles Durning's speech was great.
-Angelina Jolie looked beautiful with some pregnancy pounds. Lets hope she keeps the weight after she has the twins.
-The Soprano's is over. Yay.
-I wish Alec Baldwin were there.
-When The Office cast took the stage, I couldn't help forgetting that these were the actors, and not the Dunder Mifflin workers, at the SAG Awards. They play their characters so well, its easy to forget they aren't real people.
-No love for Desperate Housewives :( Again. Maybe next year.
-It was nice to see Dixie Carter, even though she was just there for her husband.
-No nominations for Sweeney Todd or Atonement :(
-Tom Cruise should just go away. He reminds me of the short kid on the playground with something to prove.
-Zac Efron? WHY????

Nikki Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 06:45 PM EST

Win for THE OFFICE! Thank God!!!!!!!! 30 rock is fun---but nothing holds a candle to this brilliant cast!

Win for THE OFFICE! Thank God!!!!!!!! 30 rock is fun---but nothing holds a candle to this brilliant cast!

northwestmoviefan Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

I FORGOT THIS -
I just love Tina Fey - and 30 ROCK - very happy for her , Alec Baldwin and the show. This show deserves to be seen and enjoyed by more people. Rent the DVD - the show is just hilarious ...really !I look forward to it's return - WHENEVER the strike gets ( eventually ) settled.

northwestmoviefan Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

About Mickey Rooney - the man is 87 years old - come on ! get back to me - when all you get to be that old - and are asked to dress up -present an award - glad to be alive and kicking ! He seemed happy to be there -proud of his wife - yes- it went on too long -he has a huge ego - he missed the "spotlight" -that's all.
As to the awards - I loved it ! It remains to be seen - if the Oscars will even be on TV - so - I will take what I can get - red carpet , speeches and all... writers need to settle this thing ! I WANT TO SEE THE OSCARS - MORE THAN THE SUPER BOWL !

Mike Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

Mickey Rooney's "I'm still alive" presentation of an award to the absent Queen Latifah, who thankfully did not have to witness the old man's ramblings. Favorite moment was when my partner, who was rooting for Cate Blanchett, screamed at the screen, "Cow!!!! You won't remember it tomorrow." All respect to Julie Christie, but I was on the floor.

Fatima Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 06:13 PM EST

All I can think of when I see Mickey Rooney now is "Jiminy Jilickers! Jiminy Jilickers!"

Douglas Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

Much as I loved Tina Fay's hatrack speech, the simile falls down when you remember that the hatrack didn't choreograph Astaire's dance.

Mickey Rooney has been an obnoxious gasbag for decades. My heart sank as soon as I heard his name announced.

Durning's Award has to be the only time I've ever heard an actor's tribute include the tidbit that he's killed 8 men, no disrespect to an unquestionable war hero intended.

Javier Bardem is UBERhot!

actingup Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

As an actor and proud SAG member - I love the "...and I am an actor" bits.
- Loved Tina Fey's speech. Love her an her show.
-I was thrilled Alec Baldwin won - but where was he? He is so brilliant on "30 Rock"
-How many idiots do they have working at E!? I was glad Ryan was not there - but that Debbie M is such a moron I couldn't watch her.
- Josh Brolin - didn't like you before - now I think you are a tool. Be grateful you get steady work in great projects. The overwhelming majority of SAG is unemployed. About 95% of us cannot make a living acting. But as the privileged son of a famous actor - he never had to struggle.
- Jane K from "30 Rock" - whoever put you in that dress was playing a mean mean joke on you
-Angelina sure looks pregnant since she normally wears slinky dresses showing off her slim figure
-Poor Mickey Rooney - he was so happy to be out of the house - he thought the show must have been a tribute to HIM. Cringe worthy!

RayT Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

I loved how Mickey Rourke took 40 minutes to hand out a TV Movie/Miniseries award (AKA the category that people care about the least.)

lawless1 Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 05:07 PM EST

Javier is hot, but I have been drooling over Daniel Day-Lewis for years. Last of the Mohicans anyone. I think he did the tribute because he felt like a kindred spirit with Heath.
And on a totally odd note, I hope they donate all those dinners to a homeless shelter, nobody was eating.

Juli Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

I wanted a live blog! I always look forward to those the most!!!

Bronxmom Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

A pox on anyone who could say anything negative about DDL heartfelt speech, it was so incredibly touching..
Nikki Blonski..annoying...as well as
Mickey Rooney. Making a speech as if he won an award, and there was no need for you to introduce your wife..give me a break
Casey Affleck with the gum, ugh! Ditto Josh Brolin's boorish behavior and nose picking
Ruby Dee..hire a speechwriter!

Jenny Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Debbie M. from E! also called the guy from Ugly Betty Eric Mabian instead of Mabius and then she awkwardly asked Ricky Gervais how he felt about Steve Carrel being more famous than him. Ryan Seacrest get well soon!

Cara Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

My hubby is Greek and he is embarassed by them. And he also apologizes for Jennifer Aniston's below-average acting and talent.

Alan Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 04:23 PM EST

Well said strepsi! If I were Greek, which I'm not, I'd be so embarrassed by Maria Menounos and Debbie Matenopoulos. Is that the best they can do? Well, Jennifer Aniston is half Greek, so they did something half-right at least!

Pamela Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 04:21 PM EST

From the comments here about E!'s red carpet mess-ups, I did the right thing tuning in just as the awards began.

Best moments:

The, "oh god is this going to be a rambling, no it's going to be eloquent", speech from Daniel Day-Lewis.

Tina Fey likening herself to Fred Astaire's hat-rack. Tina, I think with the Golden Globe and now the SAG you can feel confident in a promotion from hat-rack to Ginger Rogers!

Worst moments:

My phone ringing just as Julie Christie came to the stage to accept her award, thereby missing the rest of the show.

The "did you like it?" from Nikki Blonsky. Yes, we did, you don't need to go looking for more affirmation here in front of your peers. Why not a little Hairspray medley intro? Could have turned what many saw as a lowlight into a highlight.

Craig Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

I was at the ceremony last night, and I have to admit, the Mickey Rooney part was soooo awkward and boring. I'm so glad to see online today that others felt that while watching on TV. We were laghing it was so strange. I even said, "what is he doing" when he was waiting up there and the clapping started to end then everyone got up. I was like "what is going on?" LOL - So funny...

toni Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

I thought i was in minority about the Mickey Rooney stunt. His wife was more than ready to get up and her performance had been rehearsed in front of the mirror. Most actors are so shy and self-aware when asked to stand up but she was bowing like there was no tomorrow. We get it-six nominees means a tie or a very close count, it is self-explanatory. He seemed pissed of that he wasn't being honored by the SAG instead of Charles During. He was really taking an indirect dig at them by showing of his medals and rambling about his life. In company of such class acts as Charles During, Ruby Dee and Julie Christie he came of as a wierdo (who probably regrets passing over All in the Family).

Felicity Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

Why is it so hard for people to believe that DDL's speech was heartfelt and not self-aggrandizing? Actors are a different breed, they do what they do and they are GOOD (like DDL) at what they do because they are emotional and sensitive people. When they lose someone from their ranks who inspires them of course they want to show respect and pay a tribute to them. Heath will never get an Oscar or a SAG and I think DDL wanted to say - he deserved one. I wish more actors would have tipped their hat to him to show that they were thinking of someone other than themselves. Novel thought that.

MichelleAngela B. Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

Considering the fact that this may be the only awards show that fans may see, I was dissapointed that the memorial tribute did not include a touching section of Heath's films. If you blinked you would have missed a quick photo of Heath..Thats it?..BUT luckily DDL was not afraid to mention his passing and he conveyed what we feel. DDL spoke from the heart and he is a class act. He didnt have to know Heath personally to be touched by his work. Thanks DDL....Hopefully if the Oscars air, their Heath tribute will make his work more eternal.

DanOregon Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

Loved Hairspray, but yes Nikki Blonsky did come off a little like Nia Vardalos pushing Greek Wedding.
Loved the Durning tribute. I wish they just asked the audience to raise their hands if they worked with Durning. And the in memoriam segment is always great to recognize those great character actors who pass and while you know their face, you may not know their name.

Fatima Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

Ally, besides your rather nasty comment about Nicky Blonsky (and this is from someone who finds her annoying), I really don't think Dee is the frontrunner at the Oscars. They do like make-ups, but if they were all about the tribute awards, Peter O'Toole would have won last year.

Jusa Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

Top moment by far was the Daniel Day-Lewis acceptance speech.

mark in nyc Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

Aggreed that the worst moment was Nikki Blonsky screaming "OUR MOVIE! EVERYBODY LIKE IT?"
It was almost like she was saying, plese say you liked it, cause it is the only work I will ever get...unless they make Hairspray 2!

trey Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

For the informed (this means you too Stef)..Hollywood is all about the"make up" award for performances, that they feel were overlooked. Ruby Dee should've been nominated for "Do the Right Thing"& "Jungle Fever" her work in those movies is incredible. Also didn't Judy Dench win an oscar for an 9 min performance?

maria Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

worst accessory--Casey Afflecks gum, what was that??!!!

Muhlyssa Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

Debbie Matenopoulos messed up 3 out of every four peoples names

strepsi Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Oh my gd, only AFTER reading this thread did I realize that Maria Menounos and Debbie Matenopoulos are 2 different people! How does a smart, talented Greek babe like Nia Vardalos fall off the radar and these two dumb b*tches BOTH exist? Can't we put them both in a sack and throw it off a bridge?

Verolicas69 Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

Rtan Gosling & his sister wore black rememberance bows for Heath Ledger.

bbcgrrrl Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

I am SOOOOO glad I was not the only one who was appalled by Mickey Rooney! And he wonders (ALOUD!??) why he doesn't get much work???? PUH-LEEZE! As a card carrying, dues paying member of SAG, I was embarrassed by his demand of a standing-O, his RAMBLING "speech", his bid for "wife applause" (WTF?), and his confusing reading of the nominees (tie??? I was expecting a second name to be read too! AND I VOTED!)DOH!

Redeeming moment of the evening: DDL's tribute to fellow actor Heath Ledger. To the folks here who thought it was over the top or inappropriate.... it's the SAG awards, not the Oscars. These awards are given by actors to actors. And we appreciate and honor talent like Heath's. Well said Daniel, well said!

Alex Palombo Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

Although the AA-like "I'm _______, and I'm an actor" does get old, I thought Jane Krakowski's indtroduction explaining the possibilities of playing other people so different from yourself, and then ending with "Hi, I'm Johnny Depp, and I'm an actor" and a cheeky grin was priceless.

Dio_K Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

Thanks, again, for watching for us. I love the highlights & lowlights. So much better than fastforwarding through hours of the actual program.

esy Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

I was impressed that Debbie Matenopoulos managed to upstage Maria Menounos in the “most cringe-worthy interviewer” category. I didn’t think anyone could outdo Maria asking America Ferrera to respond to people who didn’t want her to play Ugly Betty minutes after she won the award for best actress (what??) ... but with the Jenna/Julie and Mabius/Mabian debacles, plus that horrifying Ricky Gervais interview, I think Debbie wins.

david Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

the worst moment for me was probably when they showed amanda bynes after someone had just won an award and she took the opportunity to take some attention for herself and wave.

Carli Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

I didn't see all the womens' movies nominated for supporting actress, but something tells me Ruby Dee was probably the worst of the bunch. Was she in more than two or three scenes? I could tell from the clip that Amy Ryan was awesome in Gone Baby Gone. She probably should've won.

Jimmy Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

Yeah what was with all of the older actors having to walk so far from the stage I mean they really must have thought Ruby Dee didn't stand a chance. Also im tired of Julie Christie winning everything ditto Javier Bardem I love both of them but c'mon does every award ceremony have to be exactly the same. Marion Cotilliard def should have won and Tommy Lee Jones was def the best in no country, why can't these shows make it more fun to watch but not always picking the same ppl sooo Hurraay Ruby Dee

Ally Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

Oh and one more thing - Niki Blonsky should have borrowed Angelina's dress.
That girl had satin clinging to her fat -- she looked hideous, esp from the back

Ally Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Oh, and looks like Ruby Dee is good bet for Oscar - they are big on awarding for a body of work, not just for the current Nom.

Ally Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

Could not agree more on the Josh Brolin - "Full of Himself" comments.
His consolation is that he is a legend in his own mind.
He was totally rude to the others in the ensemble.

Sylvie Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

Best moment: Charles Durning's acceptance speech.
Worst moment: watching Josh Brolin pick his nose.

Gretchen Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

I love the Blair Underwood segments. That man gets finer with age, the more of him on my screen, the better off I am. I DVR'd the show, so I definitely just FF'd through speeches. I missed the final award, so I DVR'd the 2nd airing and will have to watch DDL's speech.

Nose Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

carlos...that's the other one I forgot. Her only job is to know celebrities' names and facts about them, and she can't even get that right. I think someone should tell her that Ricky Gervais isn't on The Office anymore. We could all do her job with our eyes closed and hands behind our backs, and we'd all be a lot less annoying.

Chelsea Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

Daniel-Day Lewis was so classy. It was nice to see an actor honoring an actor, which is what the SAGs are all about. It's just incredibly sad to thing about Heath Ledger, but DDL's speech was inspiring. Cate Blanchett looked like she was crying too. :(

C Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

Brad Renfro was included. He was one of the very first tributes.

Coopersgirl Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

Brad Renfro was included in the tribute, but I had to look at the name to recognize him.

jeffrey Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

i get ruby dee is a legend and all. but this isn't the sympathy actors guild awards. and i just feel no matter who ever you put up against cate blanchett you should just bow down to her. and say here you go. although i wish people would recognize catherine keener's fab performance in into the wild...yey julie christie.

engineer Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

Did I miss it, or was Brad Renfrom not included in the stars who passed tribute. I know Heath Ledger is more popular but he did die too young less than 2 weeks ago.

Nathan Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 12:20 PM EST

Daniel Day's speech and tribute to Heath Ledger was by far the best moment of the show. I look forward to his Oscar speech.

carlos Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

Debbie Matenopoulos is an idiot. She also called Eric Mabius "Mabiun" and asked Ricky Gervais if he was jealous Steve Carrell was more famous than him. Ricky was speechless.

Lynny Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

On Josh Brolin- it is pretty widely understood that his cast and many other people feel like he was ignored for awards after a really great performance. It seemed like they wanted it to be his chance. Did you not see Tess Harper and the others pushing him forward to be the speaker. Good for him and good for the cast.

Cory Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

I'm happy that Ruby Dee won. For everyone questioning why she won, remember it was other actors that voted for her.

Cara Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

Was I the only one who found it hilarious that Josh Brolin said something about the studio system not working anymore...meanwhile new United Artists owner Tom Cruise was standing off to one side!! Was that a diss or did I imagine it? Tommy won't be hiring Josh for any UA movies if it was.

Lene Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

Worst moment: yet another writer yet again using the term "weheelchair bound", despite usually being a fantastic, funny and astute writer. It happens all the time in EW and one of these days, I'd love to see you guys gettin' a bit hip to disability-appropriate language.

JimmyJo Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

When did Angelina's "puppies" almost pop out??!! I didn't see that? Anyone?? Was it on the red carpet or was she a presenter? (I missed the red carpet & first 1/2 hour of the show). And Tom Cruise was the best last presenter of the night they could find?! Tommy Boy's star is tarnished to me, can't help thinking he's a loon. And he looked mad too or maybe just aiming his Scientology crazy eyes towards Jerry O'Connell for spoofing him on the net.

Anonymous Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

Worst Moment - Josh Brolin accepting the ensemble award for No Country for Old men as if it was an award just for him. Made even worse by telling Woody Harrelson to back off because it was his moment-uh, ensemble idiot. Diane Lane, what were you thinking?

Snarf Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

Couldn't be bothered to watch. I knew the Soprannos would sweep the TV portion (more or less) and just thoght why bother?

karenofny Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

Please add to the worst moment list: Can we put all 70+ year old nominees and honorees even further from the stage next year? :-P

Lynny Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

Mickey Rooney was so awful. It seemed like he was jealous of the Charles Durning Tribute, so he made one for himself. He didn't even go to the podium. No one was standing until he stood off to the side, waiting for a standing O. AWKWARD!!! I was so glad I had DVR to fast forward! On the other side, DDL is becoming one of my favorite people. He was actually being honored and instead used his time to honor someone else. Sweet.

Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

Mickey Rooney meant there was a tie with the nominees for best supporting actress -- there were 6 nominees instead of the usual 5. But the way he explained it was confusing, and it did seem like he was going to announce a second winner.

Ceballos Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

Best/Worst moment: On the red carpet, Debbie asking Cate Blanchett about playing Elvis Presley in a future film...which was apparently news to Cate Blanchett...priceless.

Also, Annie, my girlfriend had never seen nor heard Javier Bardem before last night (except maybe in a "No Country for Old Men" commericial) and she's TOTALLY with you. I mean, I can't be too mad at the guy...he DID look hot.

Louise Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

SO happy Alec Baldwin won, even if he wan't there. The clip they played of him and Tracy made me double over laughing.

Jennifer Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

Mickey Rooney said something like "What a talented group. No wonder there was a tie." That's why Debra Messing was laughing after he left - she thought (as did my husband and I) that he would be reading a second name. And the fact that he essentially gave himself a standing O was hilarious!

Ash Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

WHAT was Sandra Oh (did i spell it right?) wearing?? I'm sorry, but I did not like that HUGE bow.
And, I LOVE the Ugly Betty show, but it felt as if the camera was on their table most of the time. Maybe it was just my imagination, but I don't know. I think we should be greatful- even though there were some bleh moments, that could be the only award show with a red carpet and handing out the actual awards ceremony for a while.

BrandonK Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

Daniel Day-Lewis' tribute made me teary.

jimmyray Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

Agree with Jayel and Antoinette...the DDL tribute to Heath Ledger seemed a bit much to me. It would have been enough for him to simply have said "I dedicate this award to Heath Ledger, god bless" and leave it at that. It's not like they had ever met each other, let alone were friends.

Mickey Rooney...what was with the medals? I think he was trying to compete with Charles Durning for war hero of the night.

Just glad Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

I'm glad the SAG awards went on. I didn't realize how much I missed all the star-gazing! And I like reading everything about it the day after! Um...why Tom Cruise as the last presenter? So many to choose from.

aw i don't think Emilie Hirsch was 'high as a kite' it was plainly obvious the kid was completely nervous. i would have felt really bad for him if my dad hadn't started making fun of 'the kid who's about to faint'..i sorta entered into a laughing fit. but anyways yeah Emilie looked extremely nervous.

I also thought Daniel Day Lewis was a class act. i sorta wish, during the clip[s when they showed who all passed that they had at least taken the time to put up more than a one picture of Heath and added a clip with one of his more famous quotes.

I thought Debra Messing was completely plastered when presenting...anyone else think so? Also, Daniel Day Lewis's speech was amazing (and definitely made me cry).

Antoinette Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

I could not agree more regarding all the wins for the Sopranos. Thank goodness that show is over so other actors and shows have a chance at winning some awards. I hated, hated, hated the acceptance speech made by Daniel Day Lewis. I saw an interview with him earlier in the week in which he admitted to not ever having even met Heath Ledger. So why dedicate your award to him and mention him in every interview in the days leading up to the SAG's? I felt like it came off as a blantant and pathetic attempt to paint himself as this great caring individual, possibly to garner more Oscar votes because he is so sympathetic? Like he needs the help, you could tell even before the Oscar nominations came out that he would be the winner in the best actor category, so why exude all this false modesty and concern for someone he has never met? Also, loved the moment when Angelina's breast almost popped out of her dress. But loved even more how she handled it with grace and a smile.

Nose Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

Oh, and can I put my vote in for Marion Cotillard as Best Dressed of the night?

Nose Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:10 AM EST

I like the "I'm an actor" stuff...it is their union shindig, after all.

I turned off Ruby Dee, along with the other rambling speeches. I thought DDL's tribute was a nice touch, and something needed to be said, since it's still so fresh in everyone's mind.
From now on, seriously, they should have the E! staff ask everyone who they're wearing and maybe something like "Who are you pulling for?" or "Who are you excited to see tonight?" and send the celebs on their way. It is painful watching those two airheads try and make small talk with everyone and pretend like they're all old friends. If I were Cate Blanchett and Debbie what's-her-name put her hands on my pregnant belly, I'd have slugged her. Jenna Fischer deserved a free shot at her too, and if I'm not mistaken, she called someone else by the wrong name, although I can't remember who it was at the moment.

Rob Grizzly Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

I don't really think there were any "Worst" moments. I'm just grateful to have an award show on TV again, so I'm not gonna complain. Thanks guys.

Anyway, I hate Ryan Seacrest, so I'm glad I didn't have to listen to his BS chatter.

I liked the questions on what actors other actors were excited to meet. Ellen Page seemed to be getting a popular vote- how cool!

Thanks for the love to 3:10 to Yuma for Best Cast. Leave it to the actors themselves to recognize how awesome the work in that movie was.

I liked alot of the speeches (especially Tina Fey's). I liked the history lessons (this is a big anniversary year, after all). And I thought Terri Hatcher looked great and Tilda Swinton looked like a boy.

Ruby Dee is a sweet old lady, why the hate? You people act like old people have never rambled on an exceptance speech before. (though I think this will hurt her chances at the oscars now)

to strepsi Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

Maria Menounos was the twat who made the dumb comment last year to America Ferrera, not Deb Matenopoluousousuo...

Jayel Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

Label me the crabby, soulless minority on this, but I hated Daniel Day-Lewis' acceptance speech, particularly the part about Heath Ledger. If we the public who didn't know Ledger want to bathe in our second-hand grief at his death, we have plenty of professional media outlets to draw the tub for us; we don't need DDL to use his acceptance speech to do it. Yes, he focused on Ledger the actor, and good for him for that, but it still played as self-serving false modesty to me - "how, oh how, can little old me accept an award when the genius that was Ledger hath passed on?" I'm sure that's not the way he intended it; I'm sure his heart was in the right place. But I'm sorry, it made me a little nauseous. The man is dead, tragically; his family has to deal with the loss of his reality. Tributes to his talent are called for, certainly, but this felt like too much, too soon from a source that made no sense.
Did DDL and Ledger have a personal connection I don't know about?

Stef Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

I saw American Gangster and couldn't even remember Ruby Dee being in more than 2 scenes. The fact that the movie had Denzel and Russell Crowe and she was the only one even nominated for anything is pretty strange. I know it's been a strong year for Men's Acting, but I don't see how she could win over Amy Ryan.

Esther Greenwood Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

I agree that Emile (at least appeared) high as a kite. I'm also glad someone pointed out how ridiculously long (and rambling) Ruby Dee's acceptance speech was. I also noticed Casey Affleck telling Amy Ryan to stand up...I don't think she was being rude but just that she didn't realize they were giving the winner a standing O.

Strepsi Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

Can somebody please put back the rock whence Debbie Matenopoulos crawled? She is offensive, stupid, and offensively stupid. Why Judith Light, Jenna Fischer, or (last years recipient of her stuipidity) America Ferrara has not decked her is anyone's guess. Shut that hole up and get her off the air.

krikky Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

annie, I was being COMPLETELY sarcastic. :-)

DDL has won practically every acting award from every critic's group there is to win this year.

KBUTTONS Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

Noticed a few comments about Charles Durning's wife not being able to stand up. I just barely caught it myself, but she was in a wheelchair.

graeme Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

Mickey Rooney making sure he got a standing ovation, then blabbing on like he was accepting award. And then he ended up getting an award at the end (cause Ms. Latifah wasn't there). I was laughing just about as hard as Debra Messing was.

WORST:
Ruby Dee's win. I think her speech was longer than her entire screentime in American Gangster.

I'm still pissed about no Juno ensemble nom.

GeeMoney Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

Oh, and DAMN! Julie Christie looks insanely good for 66. I hope I look that good when I'm her age.

GeeMoney Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:11 AM EST

It was nice to see Ruby Dee and Queen Latifah win SAG awards. I was also pulling for Viggo until I saw that god-awful suit he was wearing. Hopefully he'll look a lot better at the Oscars....

annie Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

krikky, though I agree Danei Day-Lewis highly deserves his praise for There Will Be Blood, I would hardly say he hasn't received recognition. He's won numerous awards, including Oscar nominations and two Academy Awards wins.

I loved the "I am an actor." intro. Jane and Rebecca were hilarious! As was Tina during her speech.

Chris G Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

hey Jakeem, i think what Mr. Rooney meant was that there was a tie for the nominations (there were 6 and there are usually 5 nominees). I was confused myself. His ramblings was the strangest moment of the evening. i think he and Charles Durning would make great roommates in a retirement home...that sounds like a great sitcom, huh??

jes Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 08:58 AM EST

I always love the "I am an actor" quips and found this year's to be particularly funny. And I loved Tina Fey's speech.

krikky Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

Oh, and re: Debbie Whats-her-big-fat-greek-name? She was atrocious. She should never be let near stars again, not even D-listers. The sass she was bringing can only be brought by either Joan Rivers or Isaac Mizrahi. And even Joan is pushin' it.

krikky Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

I'm just so happy that DDL FINALLY got the recognition he deserved for his work in There Will Be Blood. He's been ignored for too long... ;)

Happy to see him win, even though it's not much of a surprise. He was breath-taking in TWBB. And the comments he made about Heath Ledger were so moving, glad someone actually brought it up.

And I too have now converted to Javier-dom. Good lord that man is smokin' hot!

tom brown Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 08:32 AM EST

congrats to all the winners special mention to miss christie your grace and style at the sag awards is what all aspiring actresses should strive to achieve welcome back to hollywood

Silv Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

Javier Bardem and Jeffrey Dean Morgan - twins separated at birth? And oh, so hot!

I'm still trying to figure out Mickey Rooney's confusing presentation. Was there a tie in the category of Best Actress in a Mini-Series/Television Movie, or was Queen Latifah the only winner?

Definitely thought DDL's speech was the highlight. It made me cry, too. What an honorable man.

I liked Josh Brolin's speech too. Besides Javier was standing nearby so my guess is most people were staring at him and not even listening! Otherwise the night was pretty predictable. I just watched to finally see the pretty people all dressed up.

Randdom thoughts:

**Jane K's dress made me want a margarita.

**Angie's breasts are DEFINITELY producing milk right now.

**I don't think Emile was close to tears, I think he was high as a kite.

**One good thing about the writer's strike - a lot of actresses looked like they have a had a sandwich while not working - Ellen P, Eva LP, etc. NICE to not be able to count the ribs!

**Where was new bride Katie Hiegl? Was counting on her for some ab fab on the red carpet.

There's a reason she won and it wasn't because of a lifetime of work -- she was good. If you saw AG (and I don't think you did), that last scene where she confronts her son was so powerful baby, and then when she slapped Denzel, I was like "whoa!" That's acting baby....forget those other babes they will have their time, but she is the epitome of what a good and decent actress should be.

Tom Cruise looked totally pissed off! You could tell he wanted to say something to the crowd about this recent Scientology fiasco but instead, he kept it in check. He so didn't want to be there.

Julia Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 07:16 AM EST

I thought Josh Brolin's speech was quite funny, actually. He has had one heck of a year, and it was nice to see him actually accept an award for a change!

Also, would Javier Bardem just hurry up and marry me? Thanks.

They do that "I am an actor" speech every year. Where have you been?

Tim Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 06:25 AM EST

"Miss Latifah couldn't be here tonight."

Nix Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 05:33 AM EST

This will sound bad, and it's not so muc about Ms. Ruby but after Soprano after Soprano et al.; but when Ruby Dee won, I muttered, "This is why actors should not be unified voting blocks about anything." Always the sentimental/statement choices.

Julie Christie looks smokin hot. Wow!

Tara Kell Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 04:35 AM EST

Daniel Day-Lewis' speech made me cry(again). Every time I think I'm getting a grip on Heath's passing something like this just hits me all over again. Thank you Daniel Day-Lewis. Thank you for careing.

Angelina is so totally preggers . . . she was doing the whole billowy, JLo disguise and her "girls" were quite a bit larger than normal (we almost got a real peek at them). Congrats to her and Brad--they both look gorgeous AND happy!

RightNextToMarsDotCom I think Casey Affleck was telling Amy Ryan to stand up and clap.

Cara Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:48 AM EST

Best trying-not-to-watch-my-own-clip faces: Casey Affleck, Steve Carrell.
Best facial hair: Tommy Lee Jones, Viggo Mortensen.
Best and most hilarious rambling: Josh Brolin.
Hottest accent: Javier Bardem, Marion Cotillard.
Most uncomfortable teleprompter reading: Tommy Lee Jones, Emile Hirsch.

RightNextToMarsDotCom Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:24 AM EST

What about Emile Hirsch while presenting Into the Wild? He looked like he was about to break down into hysterics.
And what was Casey Affleck mouthing to Amy Ryan when Ruby Dee won?

Why couldn't Charles Durning's wife get up? Was she also having chest pains? http://youtube.com/watch?v=8kxBfrXp7mQ

Haha -- love the list, Annie. You're working late. I also noticed Justin's sunglasses and was generally bewildered by the Blair Underwood history lessons. Congrats to 30 Rockers! Weird to see Tony and the gang back in action.

K Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:15 AM EST

Dude, Josh Brolin got so ignored by everyone, he friggin deserved his moment. God bless him.
