Which missing 'American Idol' contestants deserve a CD revival? (Pick four!)

Jan 25, 2008, 04:52 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Music, Reality TV

Americanidol_l Good news for former American Idol contestants still dreaming of chart success: There's life beyond cruise-ship performances and touring productions of Beauty and the Beast. That's because according to a story in Variety, Artists' Addiction Records and Rocket Science are teaming up to release a series of four CDs that will ultimately showcase 12 different Idol also-rans non-winners singing three songs each.

The first, due in Wal-Mart and iTunes on Feb. 5, has Ryan Starr (season 1), Jon Peter Lewis (season 3), Stevie Scott (season 5), and A.J. Tabaldo (pictured, right; season 6), while the second, slated for March 4, includes Patrick Hall (season 5), Gedeon McKinney (season 5), Alaina Alexander (season 6), and Rudy "Free Ride" Cardenas (season 6).

As an Idol obsessive, I'm totally stoked about this idea, but only in theory. Problem is, the label seems to be focusing mostly on the series' most forgettable contestants. Seriously, Alaina Alexander was notable last season only for giving scandal-plagued Antonella Barba a rip-roaring battle in the race for least-talented female semifinalist. (My internal jury remains deadlocked.) And are we sure this Patrick Hall person was an actual semifinalist? Yes, he has an official Idol page and all, but do you really believe everything Fox tells you?

So what's my dream lineup for one of these discs? Well, to give credit to Artists' Addiction, I'd include A.J. Tabaldo as well; he really suffered from a lack of airtime last season, and certainly showed more promise than Brandon Rogers or Sanjaya Malakar in his brief time on the show. I'd also include my personal pet Idol, season 2's Trenyce (at left; I can hear my colleagues Henry Goldblatt and Kristen Baldwin groaning from their offices, but her "Come See About Me" cannot be denied). Also under the heading of "booted before America could realize they were awesome," I'd pick Lisa Leuschner (season 3) and Aloha Mischeaux (season 4); check out "My Man" on the latter's MySpace page. She's on fiyah!

After the jump, YouTube clips to support my picks. Use the comments section below to tell me why I'm wrong, or even better, to tell Artists' Addiction which four singers you want showcased next!

First i want to thank you for all the wonderful articles you post. Thanks again for let us spread the love we have for our’s favorites one. Melinda Doolittle are really a talented singer with a big heart of Gold! Without website will be really difficult for the fans to share the great news about them. Thanks.

Shanice Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 12:58 AM EST

Slezak I don't agree with you often, but we agree on one thing--we both LOVE Trenyce!!! She is absolutely my favorite contestant of all time, and "Come See About Me" was just one of her great performances. Melinda Doolittle is a close 2nd as she was Idol's best singer of all time, but Trenyce had the full package--it was just awesome to watch and no other Diva contestant on the show has come close. Her "Love Will Keep Us Together" also cannot be denied!

Steve Z Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

Nicole Tranquillo
Lisa Leuschner
Christina Christian
And I am surprised there isn't much love for Vanessa Olivarez or Camile Velasco and probably Aliceyn Cooney (as long as they let her sing Sarah McLachlan)

Mike Wed, Mar 5, 2008 at 07:28 PM EST

Paula's one true shining moment was choosing Trenyce as her wildcard selection in season two. Trenyce sang brilliantly several times on AI. Naturally, I would choose Trenyce for this cd, along with Latoya London, Nadia Turner and Tamyra Gray. Another cd could be Rickey Smith, Anwar Robinson, Bo Bice, and Constantine Maroulis. Finally, another cd featuring women would have Christina Christian, Vonzell Solomon, Kimberly Locke and Melinda Doolittle.

N. R. Mon, Mar 3, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

My ideal album would include Sundance head(season 6), Bobby Bennett(season 5), Jose "sway" Penala (season 5), and Nick Pedro(season 6). Don't forget, tomorrow March 4th is the release of volume 2 with Gedeon Mckinney, Patrick Hall, Alaina Alexander, and Rudy Cardenas. I'm really excited to hear what Gedeon has on there, he was my second favorite from season 5 besides the winner, Taylor Hicks.

sergio Fri, Feb 29, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

NADIA!!!
...and I'd love to hear more from Christina Christian!

sasha Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 08:47 AM EST

Judd Harris - season 4
Leah LaBelle - season 3
Tamyra Gray - season 1
LaToya London - season 3

Runner up - Jessica Sierra - What's happened in her life recently is very unfortunate. I admit I do want to hear more from Gedeon McKinney and Patrick Hall.

Kent Tue, Feb 19, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

Lisa Leuschner was completely robbed. If I remember, they didn't even let her perform on the second "wild card" show. I stopped watching the show after that....haven't seen it since.

Montario Hill Sun, Feb 17, 2008 at 11:08 PM EST

My picks:
1: Lisa Leuschner!!!!!! By far the most robbed contestant to ever appear on American Idol.

2: Equoia Coleman Wonderful silky raspy voice.

3: RJ Helton Amazing singer whose has a velvet voice

4: Suzy Vulvaca Great singer with great range and power.

diriencl Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

If you ask me, I'd say Trenyce, Nadia, Vonzell, and Nikko Smith. Those four were all completely robbed and should've gone way farther.

PS -- Amd I the only one who thinks that if Trenyce, Vonzell, and someone like LaToya or Stephanie Edwards made a girl R&B group, they'd be unstoppable? I mean, Destiny's Child is out of the picture, there'd be no stopping them! I'd buy their CD in a heartbeat.

Working Girl Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

I bought the Curtain Call cd - my devotion to Idol knows no bounds. I was most looking forward to hearing AJ, but Jon Peter Lewis is defintely the standout! His songs are sweet, original, catchy. Ryan Starr sounds like Evansescence-lite. Stevie's songs are compable to My December-era Kelly Clarkson, with a whispier (but still pretty) voice. AJ's songs were a disappointment - bland pop with tinny synth beats. Bummer! I still love you, AJ!

Carly harley Thu, Feb 7, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

David Archelta is the best singer ! He's already proven it by being the runner up on Star Search!

TV Fan Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

The next 4 should be:
1. Haley Scarnato (love her!)
2. Melissa McGhee (smooth voice)
3. Jared Cotter (should have gone further)
4. Nicole Tranquillo (interesting voice - should have lasted longer)

Sassafras Tue, Feb 5, 2008 at 06:57 PM EST

Honestly, the only booted contestant I even remember is Constantine Maroulis. He is also the only Idol contestant whose cd I actually purchased. Great voice. Great interpreter. Great performer, especially live. Hot.

Ana Herrera Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

Constantine's is by far an outstanding piece of work that is not getting the exposure it should get because it is on an indie label. He definitely deserves the CD revival and has the talent to make it shine!

Susan Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 10:05 PM EST

I loved Constantine Maroulis' CD!

Emily Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

1. Constantine Maroulis (!!) No one else comes close!!

2. Diana DeGarmo (of course, her voice is amazing)

KDK Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

Constantine Maroulis

Actually he will have one song featured on a CD compilation, as part of a American Idol marketing campaign with Edy's/Dreyer's Slow Churned Ice Cream.

jay Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

If listeners of internet radio have a voice, you would have to include Constantine Maroulis since songs from his self-produced CD are currently topping the charts of several stations - including Idol Waves radio.
And if fan dedication is a measure, his versatility on the stage and vocal prowess keeps his ever-growing fan base coming back for more---and more and more.

Dottie Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

This is similar to the karaoke DVDs for American Idol Talent Challenge. They have favored contestants from seasons 1-6 doing their best songs. If you likey, here's the link: www.techtogo.com

Fan Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

Constantine Maroulis is my favorite of all seasons combined. I think he is rarely gifted - beautiful, soaring, layered voice. He bares his heart and soul in a song. His gifts go beyond singing. In my opinion, he should be a super-star!! I will be forever grateful to AI for giving me this.

sherri Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

Constantine's cd is awesome!!!!

Allison Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 07:53 AM EST

Michael,
Have you had a listen to John Peter Lewis' own album. It great, screams "singer-songwriter" in style, and shows why AI is not necessarily a good showcase for all aspiring artists. (Although it probably helped him get a recording deal.) He may have been forgettable on AI, but I guess "theme weeks" don't suit everyone! :-)

ApolloTheaterFan Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 01:17 AM EST

Interesting project. So much talent has slipped thru the Idol cracks. Love that Lisa Leuschner and hope she puts out another CD - I think she made it into the R&B top 50 even with her REALITY CD. I agree that Trenyce had her moments. Nadia, too. And would like to hear more from George Huff and Anwar Robinson.

A-Log Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 12:18 AM EST

Here's my four selections:

1.Patrick Lake (Season 2): I've seen this guy for the first time on American Idol Rewind and I believe he was robbed! He deserves another shot.

2.John Stevens (Season 3): I don't care what they say. I still respect the half-Sinatra, half-Rick Astley performer and fellow New Yorker.

3.Nick Pedro (Seasons 5 & 6): Another New Yorker and another robbed contestant... by Sanjaya!!!

4.Leslie Hunt (Season 6): Deserved better.

maryann Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 09:30 PM EST

Lisa Leuschner was the best singer I have ever heard on A.I...check out her 2 albums ..they are fantastic!

mattybu Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

OK, Mike, we're gonna have to chat sometime. I thought for certain I was the biggest Trenyce fan out there, but you may give me a run for my money. I'll just say that getting a hug from her was the highlight of my life. Period.

travelnow Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

Have any of these other people ever been on a compilation before? I know Jon Peter Lewis has already been on the "Now! Christmas 2" CD with such musical legends as Josh Groban, Stevie Wonder, Rob Thomas, Jimmy Buffet, Norah Jones, Weezer, Bing Crosby, Ella Fizgerald, Aaron Neville, etc., etc. In all, there were 25 other extremely successful singers on that album. He's gotta be great to be on an album with those folks.

Jon (JPL) was also on the compilation album "Breaking for the Holidays," along with well-know singers Sandra Bernhard, Ben Jelen, and Chaka Kahn, among others.

Jon's own second album of original songs is set for release in just a few months. Do any of these other folks slated for this AI series from Artists' Addiction have a new album of their own coming out?

ridingalandslide Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

Frankly, I've never liked any of the Idol winners. All the Idols have great voices, but the really interesting people seem to get booted pretty early. Jon Peter Lewis has been my favorite of all the Idol contestants over the years. His debut album was full of original songs that he wrote or co-wrote...and though he chose to go indie rather than take $$ from a label and let them force him into a boy-band, he still has scored a #13 hit in Canada. I'm really interested to hear Ryan Starr, too. I thought she had a great blues-rock voice. It's fun that they've packaged various past Idols together like this. I'm glad so many are still making music. Now if only they could find that opera-singing chick with the blue hair...lol...does anyone remember her name? She seemed like she had a lot of potential.

TV Fan Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

I always have liked the third place finishers (with 2 exceptions: Nikki and Jasmine). Kimberley Locke, Vonzell Solomon, Elliott Yamin, and Melind Doolitle are all great and should have at least been in second place for their respective years. Where is Melinda and Vonzell of these four recording-wise? Let's hear from them and SOON!

haley lover Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

I am waiting on Haley Scarnato's CD, which will prove all her nay-sayers wrong! I would also like to hear from raspy-voiced Melissa McGhee (season 5's Haley). Glad that Stevie Scott found something -- I wanted to hear more from her before her early exit in Season 5.

sally Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

definitely anthony fedorov:D

Serg Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

I loved Trenyce too! And that performance was ones of the best Idol performances ever. Ignore the haters.

Ryan Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 03:40 AM EST

I'll have Anthony Fedorov and AJ Tabaldo

Matt Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 12:00 AM EST

There are some obvious choices, though some of them have already put out CDs to little success...

1. Aloha Mischeaux (girl can SING!)
2. LATOYA LONDON
3. RJ Helton (has a CD out, it's not bad)
4. Justin Guarini

TV Addict Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:30 PM EST

I had almost forgotten the travesty that was LISA LEUSCHNER not making the top 12.

You are awesome Lisa!

justin Castillo Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

AJ's dad looks like Ray Romano.

Justin Castillo Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

I listen to Lisa here and there at idolwaves from live365 as well as great music from Sarah Mather. I wish there was a movie musical out there with American Idol influences. It would work. P.S. I recall Patrick Hall. He sang Bread's "If" in Hollywood week and sang first with "Come to My Window" By the time all the men were done, he suffered from forgetful voters.

supermart Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

Rosa: You read my mind! 1) MELINDA 2) MELINDA 3)MELINDA 4) MELINDA. NBM(Nobody but Melinda)!

Karin Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 05:18 PM EST

Michael, because you are an American Idol fan, you should know better than to think what they show on the air is the whole picture. Since Idol does like to make money, I would bet that the former contestants listed are among the best of those who don't have other commitments or who, like Jon Peter Lewis, pretty much went indie from the start.

I look forward to seeing what AJ Tablado has done; the guy has soul. I'm already familiar with JPL's stuff, and I believe you'll find his contribution to this CD to be impressive and radio-ready. (You can check out his music at jonpeterlewis.com.)

Rosa Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

Melinda Doolittle, Melinda Doolittle, Melinda Doolittle.

GwennyD Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

RJ Helton deserves some additional exposure, I think, as well as Nikko Smith. And, any decent contestant who was passed over for the likes of Nikki McKibben, Carmen Rasmussen, Matt Rogers, Jasmine Trias, Camille Velasco, Leah LaBelle, or Scott Savol deserves a second chance for sure.

jen in lincoln Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

I saw Trenyce perform about a year and a half ago, and although I didn't notice her much on Idol, you're right. I also saw Jon Peter Lewis with his band and they rocked the house.

Jeffy Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

Most of these contestants were not special enough. I agree, Chris Daughtry is really good, and he is delivering the goods. Sorry, Constantine does have a CD out and it is awful. He is a cheese factory. He makes me laugh.

Clay Aiken is a good singer who needs a winning writing team to do his talent justice. I did not like 'A Thousand Different Ways.' I bought it and got rid of it. I did like 'Measure Of A Man.'

Nadia Turner must stop making faces when she sings. She is a decent singer as was Vonzell but there is nothing outstanding about their voices. John Peter Lewis would do well singing weekend gigs in clubs. He is entertaining, but his voice is not all that.

Garry Hannon Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

Oh dear!
Here is the point in the day when boyfriend is rolling his eyes as I write this, but hey?
1) Lisa Leuschner was ROBBED! She has a great myspace page where you can hear her album: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=44932177&MyToken=4ba43de5-75f7-4592-bb77-189cc1197c98
2) Nadia Turner ditto myspace page: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=51708884&MyToken=dadc2ba6-abf1-49b4-bba0-2b9fa5a12443

I agree with Aloha and A.J. and someone should give Leslie Hunt some mad props for asking "Why did I sing scat for America?" CLASSIC!

Also DIE-HARD LAKISHA FAN!

Creamy Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

Oh, I think Season 6, Brandon had such an amazing sound. Just so Motown. I miss his voice. Also, an overlook voice, mocked by many, Sanjaya. His studio cuts are Wonderful. Shame how his singing talent was overshined by mob-mentality. Sanjayas voice is awesome. Its a shame more people refuse to listen with their ears and not their preconceived notions. He really has a lovely voice and he is just growing. This guy has a strong future ahead of him.

H Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

Love ya, Slezak, but enough with Trenyce, OK. Can't stand that girl. Never could, never would. You're right, they are picking an unforgettable bunch, but adding Trenyce might have made it even less palatable.

WildKAT Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 12:10 PM EST

Shudder. There was a REASON why these non-winners didn't. It should be obvious to even the most tone deaf. None of them have the talent, the "it" factor, or the "appeal" that the winners had. For example: Even though Rueben, Taylor, and others won the AI crown, they got dumped recently from RCA and J-Records. They may have won the contest but they did not win an enduring audience. Clay Aiken who didn't win has sold over 6 million records and is currently on Broadway performing in Spamalot. His magnitude of his fan club is astonishing and worldwide. Say what you will, but Aiken's talent will keep him on the charts and in sold out concerts because he can actually deliver the goods. True talent will always win out. Why would anyone want a redux of those who could barely sing? I would rather promote Sanjaya than suffer the rest of the people suggested in this article. At least he was charming and had a funky style that was appealing to preadolescents.

Sundance is so much better than what we saw...Chris S was good....and Lakisha. I was listening to her yesterday on youtube,,,she was really good. She just lost heart toward the end.

Teresa Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

Constantine Maroulis..he still has the charm and charisma to make it.

Anthony Federov..great, great voice and personality

Ace Young..adorable and can sing

suzie Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

I definitely like Trenyce. Why not Vonzell Solomon..?

Ann Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

I loved Anthony Federov - especially when you consider all the trials he'd been through and triumphed over!

Gwen Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

I meant, Vonzell Solomon, Lisa Leuscher, and Tamyra Grey deserve revivals.

Gwen Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 10:18 AM EST

Season 2's EQUOIA COLEMAN, deserves a CD revival. Many may not remember her, but this girl came into her audition on crutches, suffering from a spider bite. She sang Whitney Houston's "You Give Good Love." You can watch her performance of "The Way We Were" here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=BZnSEw-rz-E

Also, I agree with Lisa Leuscher. She definitely deserved it more than Matt Rogers, Vonzell Solomon, and Tamyra Grey.

Jessica Renee Johnson Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 01:47 AM EST

The 4 I would pick for a CD like this would be: RJ Helton, Jon Peter Lewis, Jim Verraros, and Chris Richardson.

PezKat Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 11:27 PM EST

Will Makar! Jon Peter Lewis and George Huff. And Nadia Turner, as several have mentioned.

I agree that Patrick Hall & Rudy Cardenas should be there. They are both amazingly talented men who made the fatal error of trying to show diversity on the first voting week instead of sticking with their strengths.

Fatima Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

I love Trenyce too. The rest of you can shut it!:)

Vinnie Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 08:52 PM EST

*Vonzell Solomon*

pai Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Anwar!

Working Girl Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

At least once per episode, all last season, I found myself screaming "WHERE"S A.J.???" at the television.

Season3wasmyfavorite Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

Jon Peter Lewis is the one I would buy the CD to hear more from. I am also looking forward to the release of his new CD.

Erykah Moore Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 10:18 AM EST

After reviewing Aloha's performance, I am going to vote for the St Louis Idol. She really "Worked it Out".

Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

As a fellow Idol junkie, I absolutely love this idea. I'd love to see people we haven't heard from at all featured, such as:

Season 1: Adriel Herrera, Christina Christian, Jim Verraros, Justin Guarini (Say what you want to about him, but anyone who has listened to his jazz album knows he can sing), Mark Scott

Season 2: Candice Coleman, Charles Grigsby, Chip Days, Rickey Smith, Vanessa Olivarez

Season 3: Amy Adams, Lisa Leuschner, Matt Metzger

Season 4: Anthony Fedorov, Judd Harris, Lindsey Cardinale, Nadia Turner, Nikko Smith, Sarah Mather, Travis Tucker, Vonzell Solomon

Season 5: David Radford, Gedeon McKinney, Will Makar

Season 6: AJ Tabaldo, Nick Pedro, Nicole Tranquillo, Rudy Cardenas, Sabrina Sloan

To "Lola" Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 05:09 AM EST

In reply to lola, who said, "there's a reason these people lost. Nobody voted for them. So why would people actually spend money to listen to them, when they weren't even inspiring enough to pick up the phone and dial?" (I think you meant impired, not impsiring)

Hello?!? Millions of people voted to get them in the top 10 (or whatever they placed) Tell that to Chris Daughtry. He placed 4th and it looks like people are buying his #1 Album, outselling most of the "winners" (Ruben, Fatasia, and Jordin are a few that come to mind) There can only be 1 American Idol "winner" each season, so placing in the top 10 or even top 25 is pretty darn good. Someone had to vote for them to get them that far and first off, they were hand-picked by 3 musical experts, Paula, Randy, and Simon. So don't say no one voted for them and no one would buy their music. Do your homework before you make such rediculous statements. People DO BUY the music from every season's "non-winners".

I will buy the first album in the series because Jon Peter Lewis is on it. His CD is great and all original work .. no cover songs. Who knows, I might like some of the other artists' songs as well. I'm willing to check it out!

M.Sleezy, the only one you convinced me of was Lisa. Right now I can't think of anyone that I would like to see again :(

Slezak, I love you and your coverage of Idol is brilliant, but seriously, I have three words of advice for you when it comes to Trenyce: GET OVER IT(HER)!

When I 1st saw Trenyce's pic, I thought it was Ebony from ANTM Cycle 5.

Sabrina Sloan, Sundance Head, and that one Leslie the dog walker (can't remember her last name) who tried scat singing.

This series of albums is a great idea. I'm especially excited to see Jon Peter Lewis on there (spelled Jon, John). He was the wild card pick in season three, so scads of actual voters dialed in for him. The night he left the show, he had NEVER before been in the bottom three, indicating that scads of people continued to vote for him. Jennifer Hudson left the week after him. Clearly, people thought they both were safe and voted to save lesser talents. Jon went out on one of his strongest performances, so don't let someone's placing on the show fool you. Jon's debut album, "Stories From Hollywood," got impressive reviews from music industry people who know a great album when they hear it. I plan to buy the first album in this series to see what all these singers can do, but Jon Peter Lewis is the real star of this.
