'Prison Break' recap: Dirt Nap

Prisonbreak_new Given that we’re only T-minus-one episode from this season’s big breakout, you’d think last night’s show would've been a nail biter. And it was...to a point: Sammy’s taken over the prison (and apparently enjoys listening to Eric B. & Rakim); Mike’s in the tunnel unaware that there’s a bounty on his head; Lechero’s hiding in the john with a shiv; Linc’s hitting on Sofia; Sucre’s planting a bomb in Gretchen’s car; Alex is sobering up, and so on. On the other hand, all those goings-on inspired very little water-cooler chat in me.  And that’s gotta say something.

Nevertheless, three things stuck out, beginning with Gretchen’s sending an email to one “Edward Guthrie” using Whistler’s alias (or real name, we’re not sure yet), “Gary Miller.” Let’s review its contents:

RE:  Great Sales! —

Ed, we’ll be in contact soon. Sales are through the roof! Hope you’re working on your putting...Gary.

First off, what are they selling? My guess is whatever’s in that silver Deal Or No Deal suitcase Sofia found hidden in the lining of Whistler’s duffle bag. Second, who’s “we?” I’m assuming Gretchen and Whistler, working together, but what do you think? And who is Edward Guthrie? Has he been mentioned before? Is he going to be our connection to Molly who, BTW, hasn’t shown up yet? And what’s this about Linc Googling (okay, “spider-searching”) “Gary Miller” and, using just his name and birth date, pinpointing the right guy? Silly rabbit, I did the same thing and got over 200,000 hits. Nevertheless, the search — Gary Miller is apparently from Scottsdale, even though his passport says Dallas — did bring back into play the info we learned a few episodes ago about Whistler’s mother being in a retirement home in Arizona. I wonder when she’s coming into the mix.

Next, there’s Michael’s new dark blue shirt and the fact that he’s now a killer. Yes, he rigged the escape tunnel to collapse on Sammy. And he feels bad about it. Which he shouldn’t: That character was a drag. He held the show down, and I’m glad to see him go.

And lastly, why, exactly, was Whistler trying to keep Sammy from killing Michael? Surely not out of the kindness of his double-crossing heart. Ostensibly, it was because Michael engineered the breakout, but I couldn’t help but feel that he might be under orders to deliver Mike to the company the same way Mike is supposed be delivering him. (And feel free, PopWatchers, to mock me if you think I’m way off).

So what’s on your minds? Are you ready for what Fox promises to be “the greatest escape in television history” in two weeks? Or are you thinking it’s gonna be a washout?

The greatest escape in TV history was when the Brady's used their belts and boots to break out of that ghost town slammer and took down Mr. Howell on their way to the Grand Canyon.

Great to see T-Bag back in the spotlight! Yes, ROB, the "Chicken-Foot-Sammy" line was hilarious as is just about everything that comes out of T-Bag's mouth. Would love to see more of Bellick as the "baddie" he was in previous seasons rather than the schlub he has been so far this year. And, thank goodness Mahone is back: de-toxed and ready to kick butt. I find the supposed bad guys of PB to be way more interesting than Michael and Linc.

I think that inside the suitcase is a suitcase nuke and the company is really a rogue division of CTU. Scoffield vs Jack Bauer next season. Sounds like a Fox executive's dream come true. They can run the same storyline from 2 different points of view via the different shows.

Did I miss something ..who is Molly? When did she tell Michael that her family died. The review mentions she told this to him last night but was I asleep during this part?

monica Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

T-Bag is always my favorite scumbag, but Linc had me laughing when he gave that girl an Eiffel Tower key chain. Maybe it was a sign of flirtation for him, but for me it's a sign that that's as close as she's going to ever get to the real thing. As for unbelievable parts of the show, I think it's stupid of Sucre to not cash the money first and what the hell happened to all the acetone and since when do drug addicts get sobered up so quickly? Maybe Alex should give a few tips to Amy Winehouse. As for their escape plan, I hope that young kid doesn't get wrapped up into their con and get killed, and I wish Sucre would've just blew Susan B. up right after she threatened his girl.

My wife and I have been walking around the house saying "Chicken Foot Sammy" in our best T-bag voice to each other at random times since last night's episode. Do not try this yoruselves because you won't be able to stop.

sarah Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

For some reason I always enjoy watching this show even when it gets kinda slow or ridiculous.

Melanie Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

Well I think last nights shows was great Ii am a huge Prison Break fan so I guess maybe it would take a lot for mo to not think one of the shows is great

Ben Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

Pretty obvious that the writers were making this story up as they went along while probably strung out on cough syrup before they went on strike. It probably took them this long to figure out how to get these guys out of the prison. Now, if they get out, where will they go? What happens when Michael or Linc kill Gretchen? Will they please just end this show with a little dignity and not let it die with a cliffhanger that never gets resolved?

AA Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Does anyone know how many episodes we're going to get? And did they tape all they wanted to before the strike?

mom-of-2 Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

I love PB but they really need to do something that wows us. It keeps dragging week to week, love the show but come'on, spice it up a little for us. It's like the writer has all this extra time but nothing to write about so, uh, lets dog some more tunnels, meetings, same c--p different episode.

Lillian Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

Maybe they switched writers somewhere along the way, but I just don't get that on the edge of my chair anxiety watching the show anymore. I'm left being amused by little things like Sammy calling Bellick "Tiger Pants." Whistler's big secret is being built up so much that I'm sure when the details are revealed, it'll be a big disappointment. And I don't like it that Michael seems to be so aimless. Maybe the loss of Sarah did this to him or it's a side effect of his time in that hotbox, but his IQ seems to have lowered several digits over the past month. Thank goodness for Alex who has stopped shaking and sweating and is now calling Whistler out. I love the fact that Linc is finally making a play for Sofia. If she doesn't hook up with him, someone write me into the show so that I can.

Gwen Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

I actually enjoyed last night's show. And, considering the fact that the writer's strike has taken care of the majority of our favorite shows, I don't think we have much room to complain.

apd09 Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

Be sure remember this, if you ever do shady things on the side and get paid in a cashiers check, cash it one place and then wire the money from a different place.
That was the moment from last night that once again makes me question how "smart" these people are, 2 weeks ago it was the general only bringing 2 men with him to try to rescue a hostage after learning of a huge conspiracy to break out of the prison. 2 people? Do you think he brought 2 people when he was taking down The Milkman, no he probably brought the whole army.
I love PB and try to take it with a grain of salt but they are really starting to lose my interest because of go no where plots and utter stupidity of characters.

moonshake Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 11:02 AM EST

glad to see sentimental Linc having time to hit on Whistler's girl who he's known for... how long exactly? geesh.

dave-o Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

i suspend a certain amount of reality for this quilty pleasure, but last nite took the cake. so they were bracing a ton of dirt with pieces of wood that they were essentially breaking into pieces. with no tools, no nails, just sheer willpower and cramming metal between the boards? puhleaze. oh well, i still love the show. glad to see sammie take the dirt nap! teabag is such the manipulator. the list of ppl not breaking out is starting to be shorter than the list of those that are breaking out.
