Penmanship of the stars: The autographs you cherish

Jan 23, 2008, 06:32 PM | by Christine Fenno

Categories: Apropos of Nothing

Sarahjessicaparker_l Today is National Handwriting Day (I think I've got not-too-shabby cursive, so, um... congratulations, hand!), which got me thinking about celebrity handwriting. Except for book readings, I can't recall a single instance when I've gone up to a famous person and asked for their autograph. I work at EW's New York City office, and in this town, if you enjoy being spared the label "rube," you don't trail the Parker-Brodericks (pictured) down the sidewalk with a pen. I guess we feel cool ignoring how cool they are when we see them.

However, for a month or so in the 1990s, I had a very specific autograph-related obsession (no, not forging checks): mailing celebrities whom my father liked, to ask for an autograph. About six months before my dear old Dad retired, I hatched a plan to make a scrapbook of photos and letters congratulating him on working hard for 35 years, American dream, all that good stuff. I was calling in mementos from relatives and friends when it dawned on me to make the gift funnier (glitzier? stranger? more eBay-able? the original motive escapes me now). Soon I was spending all my primetime TV hours  lounging and writing letters to famous people. Dear Carol Burnett! Dear Ed Asner! Dear Mike Wallace, Dave Brubeck, Tiger Woods, President Clinton, Sugar Ray Leonard, Mary Tyler Moore, Ray Bradbury, even the Weather Channel lady my dad watched every day. When I channel-surfed past Danny DeVito, he and Rhea Perlman joined the list. When I ate a Baby Ruth, Hank Aaron joined the list. There was some research involved, but not much (surely contact info is more locked down now, but at the time, expert autograph collectors shared tips over the Internet with fan-mail address intel, emphasizing the increased odds of a reply if you hand-wrote a personal letter.) On cheap blue stationery with a book of stamps at my side, I wrote over and over, "My dad's a huge fan of yours, and he's about to retire, so I'm writing to ask..."

Results-wise, I estimate I contacted 100 people and got a 30 percent return rate, and those letters and headshots sprang out of my mailbox day after day and into the scrapbook, putting my gift over the top as I'd hoped. (When writing to some stars, I even included a self-addressed, stamped greeting card, making it easy for them to just sign and mail it back; I'll never forget receiving the "Best Wishes on Your Retirement" golf-themed card with Dan Rather's signature and actual best wishes inside.)

Uncool as it may be to say, there is something oddly thrilling about a handwritten souvenir from a talented person you admire. I can't be the only one with an autograph story, PopWatchers. Do you own any celebrity signatures, and if so, what do they mean to you?

When I was 9, I met and got my photo taken with the future Governator. He had to squat way down to get in picture 'cause I was all of 4 feet tall. That same year, I got Jack Hanna's autograph. 9 years later, I still have it framed in my room.

I just started collecting celebrity autographs in September, and I've received eleven in the mail so far. The Don Rickles autograph means the most to me, because he's my hero; but the best personalized message I've received was from Joan Rivers.

You can read a little doggy's letters to celebs, and see their responses at http://weaselmcpuppy.blogspot.com/

Tina Fey, she was so open and nice about it too! She is my heroine, so it was so awesome. She was just walking downtown with some cofee doing some shopping and I approached her. She smiled and talked to me about college for a little while too.

Several years ago, I did a caricature of N'Sync for a co-worker; she and her daughter were going to their concert & had passes for a meet & greet. A few days later, she gave me a Xeroxed copy, framed and all.
The other autograph story: I was in Paris, first and only time, and my friend & I were walking down by the Seine and this guy who looked a lot like Mark Wahlberg passes us going the opposite direction. We come to a street coerner & there's a school group of U.S. teenage girls freaking out that they just met Mark Wahlberg. We decided to head back and ran into him signing autographs for some other Americans (lots of Americans in Paris.) My friend got his autograph and her picture taken with him, but I just felt like I was imposing so I didn't get anything. Reflecting back, he seemed just fine signing and taking pictures so I was pretty darn stupid for not taking advantage of the situation.

Freshman year of college my friend stopped by my dorm room and invited me to a "boring family thing...but it will include ice cream." Well, I'm not one to say no to free ice cream...and it turns out her boring family thing was saying hi to her Uncle Jerry at the opening of a new Ben & Jerry's. They are both really nice guys, and signed a napkin for me. Let me tell ya, you haven't had ice cream til its been served by the masters themselves.

When I was in Jr. High, I was introduced to a little show called Doctor Who. At that time I began writing letters to actors and actresses from the show begging for autographed photos. I ended up getting all but William Hartnell's autographs, and many of the companions. Not bad for somebody in the middle of SD in the 1980s. I have them in a binder at home, and still look at them every now and then. Maybe I should try for McGann, Eccleston, and Tenant.

A few years back I attended Kelly Clarkson's concert in Boca Raton, FL, which coincidentally happened to fall the day before Mother's Day. I had won a meet and greet, and being a big fan, was excited to meet her. My mother is a fan of hers as well, so I asked Kelly to sign the autograph to my mom instead. She was such a sweetheart, and signed the autograph "Dear Mom, happy Mother's Day! Love, Kelly." Who would've thought Kelly was my sister? lol. She was a geniunely nice person, so I am glad she is so successful!

Sara C. Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

I fell absolutely in love with Russell Crowe after Gladiator so when I got his autograph I nearly cried. It's now beautifully framed and hangs by my bed. My most recent crush is Zac Efron and my good old sister ran into him a couple of weeks ago in LA and got me his signature. That she had him make it out to me personally filled me with such happiness. Autographs are such silly things, but they really can create genuine joy.

Save Ferris Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

It's been fun reading other's experiences . . . I personally found the key to getting Matthew Broderick's autograph (my only one, in fact) is not chasing him down the sidewalk with a pen in hand. The gracious Mr. Broderick was kind enough to sign and send me back a publicity still of himself as one of the greatest cinematic characters of all time, (drum roll) Ferris Bueller.

Chris Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

Last year I went to see a Swedish band called Loney, Dear. After the show, I went and purchased a poster and t-shirt, and I saw the lead singer personally signing said t-shirts, posters, and other things for free. However, when I got to the table I because nervous and flustered, and I forgot to ask him to sign my shirt and poster. I've regretted that decision since then.

Cory Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

When I was in elementary school I was obsessed with Christina Ricci, so when our entire class had to send letters asking a celebrity for an autograph, I of course chose her. I wrote her a letter telling her how much I liked her and various info about me, including my birthday. Well, by the end of the school year I hadn't received a reply, and had pretty much given up hope that I would ever have my autograph. Well, when September 5 (my birthday) came around, I received an autographed picture from Christina in the mail. I don't know if it was just a coincidence that it arrived the week of my birthday or if Christina (or her people) planned on sending me the autograph as a birthday gift. I'm choosing to believe it was sent specifically as a birthday gift.

Jon Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

Juliana Hatfield. She wasn't very nice, but still, I love her.

lmnopie1 Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

When I was a kid I sent one of those grade-school valentines to President Nixon. I got a typed letter in return personally signed by his secretary, Rosemary Woods, on offical White House stationery (!), that read how much the President appreciated my card. I was so happy thinking he was sitting in the Oval Office looking at the little card I had sent. Now I just laugh at that, but still impressed how nice it was of Ms. Woods to write and how many letters like that she must have had to send out all the time. Very thrilling for a 7 year old!

lilly Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

When I was in elementary school I has a serious addiction to Santa Barbara. I wrote every, single cast member and actually got quite a few responses. I got Cruz, CC, Sophia, Julia, Kelly, Eden, Mason, Robert Barr, and about 10-15 more that I have long forgotten. They are all hanging out together in a scapbook full of articles on Santa barbara.

megan Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

My most memorable autograph is from Arnold Swartzenegger (I can't begin to think how to spell his name). He visited my school in 4th grade for the physical fitness patch thingy, and his people chose me and 2 other kids to be in a pic with him that ended up on the front page of USA Today. The next day when I went back to school to be on a poster and on the covers of a few other mags with him in a larger shoot with a few more kids, I got him to sign the USA Today. I brought it home after school, and my mom screamed bloody hell at me for scribbling on it before I explained that it wasn't me who'd scribbled on it, it was Arnold.

Melissa Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

I met the love of my life Joey McIntyre my senior year of High School, when he came to the Mall of America to promote "Stay the Same".........I bought the TAPE so it would be more like NKOTB-old days and I told him the story of how I got a Boston Terrier because he had one, and he seemed genuinely interested (!) and after I met him I cried actual tears of joy. Sigh.

arahsae Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

When I was a kid, I was so in love with The Price is Right that I sent them a letter proposing that they have a Kids Week, in which all the contestants were under 13. Although they didn't address my programming idea, they sent me an autographed 8x10 glossy of Bob Barker himself, along with a matching photo of the then Barker's Beauties. 17 years later, it's framed in my house for all to see. Mostly, people think it's my grandfather or something before they take a closer look, but when they recognize good ole Bob, people get so excited and make me recount the story.

Silv Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

When I was a kid I wrote fan letters to Robert Urich on "SWAT" and Paul Michael Glaser on "Starsky & Hutch" and got the requisite signed/mass produced postcard picture with their signatures. I thought I was in heaven. Then when I was 15 I won tickets plus backstage passes to a Shaun Cassidy concert and got actual pictures and an actual signed autograph. Oh, the excitement then - remember, I was 15 -- and yes, I'm embarrassed now to admit this all.

Christi Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

When I was younger I asked Santa Claus for his autograph, which I got. Then I asked the Easter Bunny for his. Once again I was obliged. I then pulled out my Nancy Drew how-to-be-a-detective book and analyzed the signatures. I then went to my father and proudly proclaimed my discovery: Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are the same person.

Yah - I wasn't the sharpest blade of grass out there. But I still have those autographs and I treasure them!

Jennifer Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

I was on the front row for a Liz Phair concert, and not only did she play a song just because I held up a sign requesting it, but she also came down to the front of the stage when the show was over and signed the concert T I had just bought. Now I tell people that she & I are close personal friends. :-)

MT Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 10:10 AM EST

I have but one celebrity autograph and I doubt I'm ever going to top it. My personal hero is Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music, and I met him last year at an autograph signing in New York for his latest release. I tried to chat him up a bit, but I was so starry-eyed and excited to actually be standing in front of him, looking him dead in the eye that I barely remember what he said! Such a beautiful man... oh well-- all I have to do is look at my autographed copy of "Dylanesque" and relive the entire experience. ::sigh::

Janice Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

I only have a few, but they are meaningful.
I have Dave Grohl's on the original Foo Fighter's album. I have all of Barenaked Ladies on my copy of Born on a Pirate Ship. I have the cast of Kill Bill 2 and Quentin Tarantino's on my Kill Bill 2 poster, and of course I have Heath Ledger's on A Knight's Tale. I really need to get that framed now.

LilisMom Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

I was lucky to be attending NYU when some good theatre was happening uptown. I have a little book with Kevin Spacey (the year of American Beauty), Judy Dench, Robert Sean Leonard, Natasha Richardson, Alan Cummings, Anna Friel, Clive Owen (before he was anyone other than some Brit theatre guy), Rosie, Kelly Bishop, Bebe Neuwirth, Nathan Lane...the list goes on. Of course, now I would never wait outside stage doors. But at 17? You bet. Interestingly enough, the prettiest signatures in my collection? George Tekkai and Tony Danza. Weird, huh?

jaime Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

I have yet to meet KELLY CLARKSON, but i did manage to have a friend get her to autograph an awesome photo for me... "Jaime best wishs Kelly Clarkson" I have it framed with the concert tickets and all!!!
I LOVE HER TO DEATH AND ONE DAY I WILL MEET HER!!!!

Jessica Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

In college I wrote a letter to Michael Gough, who played Alfred in the Tim Burton Batman movies. I told him how much I liked him in the series, and the true story that I have named my Macintosh computer Alfred. A few weeks later I got a handwritten note from the gentleman, thanking me for my thoughts, confessing he had no talent for computers, and wishing me a Merry Christmas. Enclosed was a signed photo. I framed the lot and, it still hangs on the wall. That man could do no wrong by me.

birdgirl39 Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

I have an autograph from Andy Kaufman. I was working in a movie theatre back in 1981, and he came to see a Jerry Lewis film, "Hardly Working". He was a very sweet, shy man, and I feel honored that I got to meet him. The autograph is priceless to me.

dan Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

dearest LP,

i have the same John Williams autograph hanging on my wall at this moment. my brother actually sent John a letter detailing my compulsive adoration, so when this autograph arrived in the mail i was taken completely by surprise.

oh, and when i saw Hairspray on Broadway i had Bruce Vilanche sign my program. i complimented him on 'Get Bruce' ... which i had never watched (but planned to). his autograph was an allusion to Hollywood Squares, naturally ... ... though i was hoping he'd draw a funny t-shirt around the autograph instead.

FawkesFonseca Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 08:27 AM EST

I have an autographed screen shot from "Brokeback Mountain" with Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger's signatures...It means so much more to me now than ever before.

jcarla Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 08:10 AM EST

Christine, I think I spent more money than you for just one autograph for my Dad. I spent $20 just for Ron Glass's autograph for my Dad on a 'Barney Miller' Picture. Thank goodness he liked it.

Kayla Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 01:39 AM EST

Joss Whedon's autograph: need I say more?

Nix Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 01:13 AM EST

A recent autograph story: Needtobreathe opened for Jars of Clay at the HOB in Anaheim, and I was in the very front on the lip of the stage. Never heard them before (I was there for Jars) and liked what I heard. When a setlist flew out as their stuff was struck, my friend asked the roadie if we could have it, and gave it to me. It was just notebook paper with the setlist markered on. Later at the meet and greet I got them to sign that. I have lots of signed Jars of Clay stuff, but my favorite was when they visited Manila and I sent them a bunch of little native earthen pots (get it) as souvenirs. They sent one back signed by the band. But my favorite autograph belongs to Billy Mueller, back when he played 3rd for the Giants, before we stabbed him in the back and sent him away ... the nicest guy in the world, autographed it after a game with his hair still mussed, quiet and shy and signing for all the kids first--well, he got his ring with the Sox, Barry never did, there's karma.

Anthony Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 12:22 AM EST

HUGE autograph collector here..I do it mainly for myself not to make money. I am so reatful to have Heath Ledger's...the best one I received in the mail is maybe Oprah or the cast of ER

Laura Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 12:12 AM EST

I admit to being a minor collector of autographs. I was entranced as a kid with it---I got a personal letter and autograph from Shannen Doherty when I was 12 and she was on the now-forgotten Our House. I also have gotten multiple autographs from the guys of Barenaked Ladies, who are always so gracious to fans waiting by their buses after the show. My favorite though is Cate Blanchett. I got it in 99 when she was performing in a play in London. I patiently waited by the stage door for a couple days to get it. It's framed and on my wall!

BrandonK Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 11:20 PM EST

The only autograph I have is Wil Wheaton's...but I paid for it. Is that wrong? It was to support one of his projects!

Sarah Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 11:19 PM EST

The movie "Stuck On You" was filmed in my hometown (the Martha's Vineyard part) the week I was home from college in March, so I spent the week watching them film around town. The best day of it was when I headed downtown to watch the jogging scene. After filming, we could all meet the stars. First, I went to meet Matt Damon, who was swamped. Then I turned a corner, and saw Greg Kinnear, who was all but ignored. I went up to him and said "I'm a really big fan of As Good As It Gets and Talk Soup, and I'd love to get your autograph". So I got to have a nice five-minute conversation with him and get his autograph. He's extremely nice and sort of self-deprecating. Definitely made my spring break. Who needs a warm beach when you can meet Matt Damon and get Greg Kinnear's autograph?

dala Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 11:12 PM EST

i skipped the cast photo of the play i did in high school for the local newspaper just to go to a meet and greet in boston to see the cast of "veronica mars",....the autographs of the entire cast is cherish to this very day ;)

Crystal Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 11:03 PM EST

First of all, LP's John Williams story?! That is boss!! Anyway, I must admit that thanks to being an L.A. resident with no shame, I have a great many autographs.

My most treasured is my X-Files S1 DVD set signed by Chris Carter and Mark Snow, probably because of the way I got it. About 3 years ago I had the set in my car because I was loaning it to someone. I went into a restuarant and Carter & Snow were there eating!! I sat down and ate but when I saw them leave I jumped up and ran outside and had them sign it. I can still remember the smile on their faces because it was just TOO random.

LCM Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 09:44 PM EST

Colbie Caillat! Not that big I know, but still exciting.

Starstruck Chuck Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

My life's wish is to get an autograph from Harrison Ford.

queen of disrepair Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 08:53 PM EST

I have an autograph from Robert Duvall on a real estate ad for the house they used in Godfather 2. And, I have a Berke Brethed autograph (the cartoonist who gave life to Opus). He was a guest on a radio show I was working on. He kept too far away from the mike so I kept telling him he was "too soft, too soft". He signed my cartoon of Prince William , "Hoping to get it Harder" Berke Berthed.

Rebecca Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 08:53 PM EST

I have a hardcover copy of 'The Lord of the Rings', signed by many of the cast and crew - illustrator Alan Lee was the first signature, and Andy Serkis is the most recent. It is one of my most treasured possessions.

Michelle Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 08:49 PM EST

I got Bruce Campbell to sign my copy of "Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way" and the first issue of "Man with the Screaming Brain". It was wonderful.

Martha Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 08:46 PM EST

When I was 16 I went to see "Ian McKellen Acting Shakespeare" not too far from my hometown of Washington, DC. At the end of the show, McKellen did a monologue from "Henry V" and needed volunteer helpers...for dead French soldiers (easiest acting gig ever!). I was standing nearest to him when we stood up and he gallantly kissed my hand. Then after the show I had him sign my official show T-shirt and said, "Thanks for letting me die onstage" and he answered, "Thanks for dying." I still have that T-shirt, though it's the worse for wear and the signature's faded. Good times.

Little Lamb Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 08:46 PM EST

My husband actually did something very similar for my birthday 5 or 6 years ago, writing to celebrities and asking them for birthday wishes for me. He collected them all and had them made into a nicely hardbound book, and gave it to me along with the original photos. A number of people wrote a short message along with their names, which was nice of them. I can't tell you how much of a kick it is that I have birthday wishes from Mr. Rogers and Dick Van Dyke, two people I grew up watching on TV, among many others. It was quite the time-consuming project for my husband, too, and involved the renting of a PO box and months of secrecy on the part of him and our friends who knew about his little mission. Really cool thing for someone to do!

Janie Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

My favorite actor has been Hugh Jackman for about 7 years- since I was 13 years old. He was on Broadway a couple years ago in The Boy from Oz. I got my first summer job, bought myself a ticket to one of his last performances and took a plane to New York just for the show. After it was over, I jumped out of my seat and sprinted to the stage door so that I was in front when he came out. There were hundreds of people waiting, but I was lucky enough to be one of the people to get my program signed. I said "Thank you," he said "Pleasure," and I flew home knowing that it would be one of the happiest days of my entire life.

LP Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 07:50 PM EST

I once wrote a long letter to John Williams and got back an autographed photo where he had hand written a musical staff and the first several notes to the Star Wars theme. Doesn't get any more awesome than that.

katie g Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 07:35 PM EST

my high school offered a drama trip to dublin for the city's theatre festival. one of the play's we saw was starring geoffrey rush.
i barely sat through the whole thing i was so excited, and after the show our teacher approached the stage manager about maybe meeting him.
he actually came back out on stage and talked to us for a good 30 minutes, personalizing and autographing everyone's program.

it was one of the greatest days of my life, and i still have that program tucked away.

Zod Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 07:30 PM EST

I got Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) to sign the cover of one of my original Marvel Star Wars comics at a comic book convention. He signed it with a black sharpie so you can barely see it but it's totally there.
I got Venus Flytrap's when I was a kid and Ice-T's when I was older but I've lost them both.

Daniel Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 07:27 PM EST

I've got J.K. Rowling's, B.J. Novak's, and Ha Jin's, all of whom I met in person (I actually got to have a 75 minute chat with B.J.!).

Devin Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

That's so crazy that you put up this post today since Kate Walsh from "Private Practice" and "Grey's Anatomy" visited my school (Arizona State) today to promote Obama. I actually skipped class to see her. We got a picture together and she gave me her autograph on an Obama sign. It's pretty much the only autograph I have at the moment. But this experience was pretty much the highlight of my day... and I don't even watch either of her shows!

Kirby Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

When I was in Jr High, I got letters back from Sasha Cohen, Daniel Radcliffe, Vanessa Carlton, and Ben McKenzie. I sent out more but didn't get replies.

Media Prom and Wolf Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

First of all, props to Christine for such a cool gift idea! Watch me steal it. As for my autograph moment, as a young newspaper intern, I got to tag along with the rest of the bureau to the White House Correspondents Association's annual Dinner which is like the prom for geeky journalists. While there were some notable celebrities there - Jerry Seinfeld and Heather Locklear - I spent my even hunting down my favorite TV anchors. My biggest (and now upon reflection, my lamest) get - CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

Emma Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 07:20 PM EST

I sent a letter to One Tree Hill star Sophia Bush and she sent me back an autographed picture.

Jake Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

I have an old Monty Python record signed by Michael Palin.

Dana Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

I got Hayden Pannettierre's (sic) at a sci fi convention I was volunteering at. She was charging twenty five dollars an autograph, but because I was volunteer I got one for free.

I also got Stephen Colbert to sign a copy of his book, which was pretty awesome.

Sara Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

I got John Elway and Stephen Stills autographs at political fund raisers. I didn't expect to see anyone famous so I asked them to sign whatever random piece of paper I had on me

Meredith Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

The only autograph I have is Donny Osmond. When I was 8 my mother and grandmother took me to see him in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and it was love at first sight. My grandmother wrote him a letter saying how much I loved him, and he wrote back. I still have it today, though now I treasure it because of my grandmother, not because of Mr. Osmond.

RightNextToMars Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

John Travolta and Uma Thurman signed my copy of Pulp Fiction (independently of one another) and I have it displayed. I was very eager to show it to my dad, as well, since it's a movie we shared together when I was probably way too young to be watching such a thing.
