Oscar snubs, revisited

Alisonjanney_l Diablo Cody, fresh off four Oscar nominations for Juno, including one for her original screenplay, charmed David Letterman last night. Her indie hit also received nominations for best actress (Ellen Page), best director (Jason Reitman), and best picture. All well deserved, but am I the only one who wonders how many scenes J.K. Simmons and Alison Janney (pictured) have to steal before the Academy notices? Check out our gallery of other snubs you PopWatchers nominated.

Kirby, maybe instead of focusing on the fact that Diablo Cody was a stripper, whatever her reasons were, you should concentrate on the fact that she has the courage to put herself out there on her blog, through her book, through Juno...it really doesn't matter what the subject matter is. She's a strong woman who made her own way in the world and as an aspiring writer, I totally respect that. No one is saying you have to follow her path, other than to start writing, post your thoughts online as she did, and maybe you'll catch your big break too.

I agree completely. Every line from JK was a zinger. I think he, Allison, Jason Bateman, and Jennifer Garner all should have received nominations. They were snubbed!

Wow! I was just having this conversation with my coworker today. Ellen Page was great, but JK and Allison really made the film for me.

I remember Alison from her stint on Guiding Light. Love her!

I thought that Jason Bateman was fantastic in his role in this movie. While I don't think it was Oscar worthy, I'm surprised he didn't get more critical attention for the job he did. He walked a fine line between a creep/jerk and a sympathetic man stuck in a rut, and managed to keep my sympathy the entire time.

I've tried so hard to like Diablo Cody but... I just can't do it. I think it has a lot to do with the stripping thing.

Seriously, why would you choose that 'career' if you weren't at absolute rock bottom? She's clearly talented so idk why she'd want to objectify herself out of curiousity.

It's weird that she calls herself a "feminist" and claims to be writing the "feminist answer to Superbad." Because actually "feminism" isn't just saying "Oooh, girls can be horny and gross too!!" It's about equality and stuff.

As a young, female aspiring writer I want so badly to look up to her and respect her, but it's hard to do that to somebody who thinks it's cute to write about, like, dildos and masturbation on her public blog.

I was stunned how good Janney was in Hairspray. Who would have thought she'd have the best post-West Wing career?

nunya Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

i thought cody came off as immature and cheesy on letterman. stripping isn't exactly a career move to be proud of.

JK Simmons is also great in The Closer!

I think Jennifer Garner deserved a nomination, she actually turned out to be my favorite in the movie. But, yeah, Simmons and Janney are also well-deserving, especially after long careers doing quality work, especially Simmons as Schillinger!

Um Janney does not need more awards.... she was given 4 Emmy Awards... The Acadamy has awarded her enough already!
P.S. her acceptance speeches are blah

And J K Simmons? Oscar? What for?

Ceballos Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

Very true...

They each got a scene or two to shine. Loved Janney's sonogram smackdown! As for Simmons, his speech to Juno in their house was one of the sweetest speeches this year, but his favorite moment of mine are his thoughts on Tony Little...that guy ain't right.

By the way: In his article in the Sun Times today, Ebert made it clear he's with you on this, so you're in good company

katie g Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

agreed
janney is genius - and i'd watch ANYTHING with her in it. loved juno, and everything about it
but it wouldn't have been the same without ms. alison janney
