It's time for your Must List suggestions, we reckon

Jan 16, 2008, 04:24 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Must List

Jonny_l Currently on my Must List: Jonny Greenwood (pictured). Not just for the Radiohead guitarist's haunting, evocative score for There Will Be Blood (in this week's Must List in the magazine) but also because I can't get "Reckoner," off In Rainbows, out of the endless loop in my head.

How about you, PopWatchers? Please send us up to three of your indispensible current choices in music, TV, movies, books, comics, videogames, or websites. Send them along with your e-mail address (for verification purposes) by 10. am. Thursday, Jan. 17, and we may use your pick in the magazine's Must List next week. Reckon you can do that?

Have you seen The Office's Kate Flannery (aka Meredith) as the Christian songwriter on JESUS PEOPLE? I've been watching all six episodes on funnyordie and its the funniest series since The Office. For once... quality s*it on the web.

Cloverfield!

(Or even just the hype surrounding it--what the heck IS that monster?!?!)

RATT Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

Don't know if this has hit the MUST LIST yet, because there was no way to see old lists? But, I am currently reading THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY comic book by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba. and yes, the writer is Gerard way from MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE.
Thanks!

"Lowdown" by My Morning Jacket - Radiohead meets the Allman Brothers meets an infinite loop on my iPod.
Complete Brahms Piano Music by Gerhard Oppitz - for hours of mind-boggling gorgeousness.
"My Father Had a Daughter" by Grace Tiffany - literate story of Shakespeare's daughter that reminds you what all the fuss was about in high school English.

Brian Kovach Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

The Oozing Skull from Cinematic Titanic (www.cinematictitanic.com). Joel Hodgson and other veterans of MST3K re-emerge to make fun of a shockingly bad horror movie in silhouette just like old times! (plus, check out rifftrax.com and The Film Crew DVDs for similar experiences.)

Megan Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

"The Gravedigger's Daughter"- Joyce Carol Oates

Sara Bareilles

American Gladiators!

Side B of the new Maroon 5 cd. Amazing!

Snarf Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 08:11 AM EST

TV - Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles If the first two eps are any indication this could be the midseason replacement hit of 2008
Book - His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass/The Subtle Knife/The Amber Spyglass)all in one volume.
Movie - Cloverfield. Worth the Hype.

Raven_Moon Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 01:31 AM EST

1) Music: The "Juno" soundtrack
2) Books: Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series
3) TV: "Kyle: XY" returns!

* If you're going to buy Jonny Greenwood's original music to There Will Be Blood, you should also pick up the von Karajan/Mutter performance of Movement 3 from Brahms Violin Concerto, Op. 77 - It's the closing credit song from There Will Be Blood. After such an intense movie, it was a cathartic ending...so cathartic that I immediately purchased it after seeing the movie!

*THE WIRE on HBO on DEMAND - I love being a week ahead on the action. It's getting better and better each week!

*Walter Mosley's 'Blond Faith'. This will be his final Easy Rawlins mystery. Frankly, I haven't opened it up yet because I don't want the story to end. The coolest detective ever.

1) Poster for the Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Krystal Skull - Though the film is still 5 months away it, the poster brews up excitement for its release.

2) Kyle XY - don't underestimate it just because its on ABC Family, its got good acting and a good story. It is also one of the few shows to be coming back in the midst of the strike.

3) Sweeney Todd - Both Johnny Depp and Helena Bohnam Carter are excellent, as well as Tim Burton's always innovative directive. One of the most enjoyable films i've seen all year.

Brian Zitzelman Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 10:17 PM EST

Three things on my must list these days are...

St Vincent's Marry Me - Months after its release, I still can't stop listening to this sweet, smart album.

The Orphanage - Classically gothic scares that reminds me of the original Haunting and Devil's Backbone mixed in a blender.

Zodiac 2 Disc DVD - In theaters I liked it a lot. Upon a second viewing, I absolutely adore it.

Erica Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 09:55 PM EST

The Complete Jane Austen on Masterpiece, because Sunday nights with Miss Austen is how it should be.

Daniel Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 08:52 PM EST

--"The Amazing Spider-Man" - 'Brand New Day' - as terribly controversial as 'One More Day' (the retcon of the MJ/Peter marriage) was, Dan Slott (Avengers: The Initative, She-Hulk) and Steve McNiven (Civil War) are making some damn fine comics now in this thrice-monthly title (each month sees a new writer/artist team; there are four teams in total).
-- 'Kyle XY' - He's baaack! The belly-button-less wonder returns for 10 more brand new episodes, as Kyle deals with the out of control Jessie XX.
-- Family Guy: Blue Harvest on DVD!

krikky Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

THERE WILL BE BLOOD - Essential viewing for any true cinema fan, in my opinion. That is, if you can find a theater near you that it's playing in. Good luck, middle America!

Nix Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

1) Jamie Bell. Billy Elliot grew up a while ago and will be in 2 movies out this season, well-praised indie "Hallam Foe" (starring role) and the big budgeter "Jumper" (whose trailer is rocking my world), which his character will apparently pwn, judging from the prequel novel and the video-game spinoff.

2) "The Triangle Song". Jars of Clay's new little ditty on their MySpace. they're channeling the fratellis now.

3) Justin Townes Earle, Steve's boy, and his roots-rock-'acana.

HAHAHAHA Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 07:43 PM EST

this might be just me but is that Zac Efron in 5 years? HAHA i don't know who he is but that looks like HSM after 5 hit of coke.... hahahaha

AMA Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

The finale of the Amazing Race is a MUST SEE this Sunday. For the first time in a very long while, the final three teams are wholly unobjectionable, plus with two guys over 50, a record could be set with the oldest winners in Amazing Race history.

Marisa Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

1)Orangutan Island on Animal Planet - It's the first show since the writer's strike that I have given a season pass to on my DVR. I may not be able to get scripted comedy and drama but these apes are naturally full of both.
2)Plies - Hypnotize ft. Akon
3)Paul Marturano's ode to Paula on American Idol! I usually hate the bad additions, but I can't stop playing this one again and again on You Tube.
Simmon is right he is really creepy.

To add to Nathan's Blu-Ray comment, the YouTube video "The Downfall of HD-DVD" is a keeper, especially if you've seen the film it borrows from.

Joan Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

Michael Cera and Ellen Page's cover of "Anyone Else But You"--Their version of this song is haunting me after I saw the movie a month ago.

- The Wire (it will be on the list until forever)
- Vampire Weekend (myspace.com/vampireweekend
- Shawty Lo's Dey Know remix (listen at myspace.com/therealshawtylo), especially Lil Wayne's vecoder verse ... "all my kicks is fly, just like Liu Kang)
- Office re-runs on TBS. They, at least, make my heart smile a little bit.
- American Gladiators ... I guess.

Matt Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 05:07 PM EST

"Rent" on Broadway. Producers have announced that the long-running show will close this summer after 12 years. Just a few more months to see what made this show so great and groundbreaking!

Broadway Baby Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

1. American Idol finally gets the good/bad ratio right in the series premier! Let's hope the good judgement lasts until May.
2. Tale of the Mighty Knights the new Backyardigans movie. "We're Knights" sung by Uniqua and Tyrone is incredibly catchy and Adam Pascal's version of the final song is sweeeet. Plus all the great scenery is just a treat to look at. I don't know if my kids enjoy it as much as I do - but who cares - I get to watch children's programming without slipping into a coma.
