Your Must List suggestions (Polar Bear Edition)

Jan 22, 2008, 04:31 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Must List

What's on your Must List this week? For my colleague Mike Slezak, it's these video clips of an adorable polar bear cub. Speaking of polar bears, Bruce Springsteen and some Jersey Girls are braving the winds at a chilly-looking beach in this video for "Girls in Their Summer Clothes," below. (Hat tip to Idolator.) Just released as a single, it's one of the poppiest-sounding songs Bruce has recorded in ages, and it's on my list this week.

And you? What are your three unmissable TV shows/albums/books/movies/video games/websites of the week? Send your recommendations by 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, along with your e-mail address, so we can let you know if we decide to include your picks in next week's issue of EW. And watch this space; I'm sure Slezak has plenty more cute-and-fluffy animal videos for you.

1. Fight Quest on the Discovery Channel. Two dudes travel the world to learn different local fighting styles, and generally get the crap beat out of them in the process. Oddly heartwarming.

2. Michael Palin's "Diaries, The Python Years". A highly personal history of the creation, works and dissolution of one of the most influential comedy groups of the last fifty years.

3. The Crazy School, by Cornelia Read. A very funny, very dark murder mystery set at a "therapeutic" boarding school in the Berkshires.

A spectacular new book called For You is one of the best Bruce Springsteen books ever published. What's real special about this is that it's all about Bruce and his fans. The 208-page book is a collection of recollections from fans about Bruce from the early 1970s to present. This marvelous collection of hundreds of fan tales, testimonials and memories also features tons of fan photographs of Bruce and the E Street Band over the years. Many of these photographs have never been published.
It's the photos that really impressed me. So many great shots of Bruce over the years, from his Steel Mill days in 1970 to even the Magic Tour. Only 2,000 copies of the book were made and fans should order a copy now to ensure they will not be shut-out. The stories by fans really capture how Bruce Springsteen and his music has touched our lives over the past 30-plus years. This is a 'must have' for any Springsteen fan.

1) Catching up on any unseen films of Heath Ledger. Rewatch Brokeback Mountain. R.I.P. Heath.
2) Catching up on Oscar nominated movies -unexpectedly pay for Juno at the theatre instead of renting it in late spring
3) Gone Baby Gone - the original Dennis Lehane book. Fantastic, gritty, best book I read all year.
4) Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles - yes! Stunts on TV again!!!
5) American Idol Auditions: must. look. away. but can't. not. watch!
6) Moment of Truth: see number 5

Alan Sepinwall's (sepinwall.blogspot.com) Strike Survival TV Club re-watching of Cupid, Rob Thomas' quirky comedy and pre-cursor to Veronica Mars. The chemistry between Jeremy Piven and Paula Marshall's is amazing. Another example of a show canceled too early.

Anderson Cooper 360 correspondent, Erica Hill. She is hilarious. I love the interplay between her and Anderson, especially in the "What Were They Thinking?" segments. Her facial expressions are priceless.

The current presidential debates - honestly the current crop of nominees has turned me from a channel surfer at the sight of George Stephanopoulos to a political news/analysis hound. There is currently nothing as engrossing, interesting and yes entertaining than the debates have been since Iowa. (Get out there and vote people)

-- "She-Hulk" by Peter David (MARVEL Comics) - David is a worthy successor to Dan Slott, and the inclusion of a Skrull as a main character hints at some big "Secret Invasion" involvement.
-- Brad Leland on "Friday Night Lights" - it wouldn't have seemed possible a season ago, but Buddy Garrity has become one of Dillon's most lovable citizens.
-- "The Soup" on E! - the E! network's cult hit rewards longtime viewers with recurring gags (ala "Arrested Development") and maintains the highest laugh-per-minute ratio on television in these dull, mostly non-scripted strike days.

My musts for this week have been Cloverfield. JJ Abrams is brilliant and I liked how you didn't exactly figure out what the monster was or where it came from, just knew what people were going through. My second must is Lost season 3. With 9 days to go until Season 4 it has been nice having this refresher and the season finale still shocks me!

Blu-Ray, HD-DVD is dead, it's now safe to make the HD switch with the format war in its final days.

I only have one obsession this week (and last and probably next week) and that is Love Song by Sara Bareilles. It's got such a great sound and her voice is just lovely.

Christian from Project Runway is awesome. Not only is he like a little pocket elf, he's also a bad-ass designer.

My web obsession is always Barat & Bereta, a pair of college grads just trying to be funny. This is "MANtage" but all of their vids are pee-your-pants funny!

Must have accesory of the week: A Baby. It was reported last week by the Census Beareau that for the first time in over 40 years people had more children than the # of people who'd died that year. In other words, for the first time since the 1940's, we've have positive population growth.

SO, what's THE pop culture accessory right now? A kid. All the celebs are having babies right now! I've jumped on the trend and now Mrs. Sato's expecting to join the ranks of the ultra hip in August.

Sorry for the threadjack but CNN is reporting that Heath Ledger is dead! WTF?!?!?!

Chaddogg Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

My Must-List choice? I'll go with "Life After Humans" on History Channel, which was a fascinating look at how quickly nature would "retake" the planet if all of us humans were to suddently disappear. Bonus points for showing Chernobyl, a ghost town, that has been largely overtaken by nature again....fascinating documentary with just enough science to keep things interesting!

Cute and fluffy rots the intellect. Then again ugly and gross isn't that great either.
