More Meryl, making music

Ever see an Oscar-winning actress and a ventriloquist's dummy get horizontal on a Hawaiian beach in a very sweet, non-kinky way that's also kind of hot? This is a postscript to my recent item about Mamma Mia! star Meryl Streep and her oft-unrecognized musical talent. I absolutely had to share this delightful, obscure video that EW.com's Steve Korn just shared with me.

Preceded by a brief intro from a what appears to be a Wonder Showzen refugee but is actually the deep-voiced star of Steve Hall's Puppet Music Hall, the clip is from photographer Laurie Simmons' 2006 short film The Music of Regret. (The dummy, and the object of Meryl's affection, is voiced by Adam Guettel, Tony-winning composer and lyricist of Broadway's The Light in the Piazza.) In short, it's a mesmerizing duet.

What do you think, PopWatchers, will this July's Mamma Mia! be half this good?

Laurie Simmons is an amazing artist-- one of my faves. It's so exciting that she made a movie! I googled it and there's a screening at the Met in NYC on Sunday at 2pm. I'm going cuz I live in NYC and don't know how else to see the movie-- is it on DVD? I know parts of it were on Art 21 on PBS.

well, to answer how you'd get her in your movie......that scene looks very "artsy" and i think meryl is married to an artist. unless i am misremembering that about her maritial life. ??? maybe this film director is someone in the "art" crowd that she knows ??

Jane, save your airfare. Light in the Piazza closed a long time ago. And though it was brilliant, it was nothing like this sweet, old-fashioned tune. If Abba songs all floated into the sea, I wouldn't miss them...but Streep in the movie guarantees I'll buy a ticket.

I was already out of my mind with excitement about Meryl in Mamma Mia. This makes me want to get on a plane and head to Broadway to see Light in the Piazza. Gorgeous song. Only Meryl can make singing to a puppet look achingly beautiful.

Strange, but lovely. Great song and a nice way to end my day. I love Adam Guettel's voice. Meryl sounds good. If she's game for something like this, I look forward to seeing what she does in Mamma Mia! She and she alone have convinced me to see that movie.

Meryl has a nice "band singer from the 40's" voice, but she shouldn't quit her day job.

What I want to know is how you get the best actress of her generation to appear in your little nothing film?

Creepy, but anything with Adam Guettel automatically gets five stars in my book. The man is genius.
