McG's latest project: Promoting a book called 'Celebutantes'?!

Jan 25, 2008, 05:03 PM | by Thom Geier

Categories: Advertising, Books

The oddly monikered director McG, who brought us such kinetic movies as Charlie's Angels and We Are Marshall, has taken an unlikely new directing task: crafting four short trailers to promote a new book. That's right. A book. In fact, it's a Hollywood satire called Celebutantes by Amanda Goldberg (daughter of film producer Leonard Goldberg) and Ruthanna Khaligi Hopper (daughter of Easy Rider Dennis Hopper). The clips dramatize various scenes from the novel and star Autumn Reeser (The O.C.) as Lola Santisi, the daughter of a famed director who agrees to help her gay designer friend by persuading a famous actress to wear one of his gowns to the Oscars; other somewhat familiar performers in the shorts include Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Wilson Cruz (Rent). I gotta say that the first clip is actually pretty entertaining. And certainly more polished than the usual video book promos (think of all those awful TV commercials with James Patterson woodenly touting his new title). But would a catchy clip make you want to read a book... or would you just wait for the inevitable movie/TV series based on said book?

I love the video, but I must say, it makes me want to see the movie, not buy a book.

You can watch full episodes of Celebutantes in http://www.BbPcTv.com/program-Celebutantes.aspx in high definition online. You can also find all your favorites TV shows online on demand anytime directly from the producers... and it is free!

What an interesting way to get people interested in reading! Book trailers are like movie trailers, but for books! You can find them all over the internet now, but here is a site that's featuring them on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/booktrailers

what's in a name...HD is digital!

And yes, these were shot (digitally) in HD!

Sheila Clover English Sun, Feb 3, 2008 at 04:55 AM EST

They obviously spent a lot on the trailers. Most book trailers are digital, but this looks HD.
Book Trailers have really caught on and have gotten popular with a lot of young people. If it encourages people to read I'm all for it!
If you pay by the hour to be entertained, a book is the best deal.
You can see a bunch of trailers and mini teasers on YouTube -

My friend and I both agree that this lil preview made us want to read the book, but even more so we'd pay to see this as a movie! Say what you want, but sounds like the perfect summer combo

They already do that for trashy thrillers on the Lifetime channel. Not my thing; I prefer actual literature that wasn't written by an ink-stained monkey.

You had me at Autumn Reeser, part deux. Her timing completely transformed the last season of the OC back to its halcyon days of cleverness and astute yet still sentimental self-mockery. I see she has it still. I'm casting her in my book.

Maggs Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

Why isn't Autumn Reeser a bigger star already. She was the reason I kept watching the O.C in the end. I miss you Taylor Townsend and all your quirkiness.

Miss Dahlia Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

You had me at Autumn Reeser... I miss you Taylor Townsend. However, like Ep Sato I'll wait for the DVD. Until I can eat AND surf the net while reading a book, I think I'm going to stick to TV. Unless I can download the audiobook (read by Autumn Reeser, plllleeeese?) so I can listen to it on the bus while I pretend to read something more highbrow (oh, you KNOW you do it too).

Hm, yeah, I'm not so sure a commercial would convince me of a book. But hey, trailer don't convince me of movies either - so what is the difference in the end? I'll research the author and look up reviews, just as I would research facts/reviews about a film and make my decision then. :) But I do say, the commercial has my interest. Quite hilarious - though comedic timing would be kind of lost in a book. But atleast I know how it's suppose to play out ahead of time, yeah?

Snarf Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

HA! If that book is as half as entertaining as that short/commercial spot was then count me in. BTW - I expect a review EW once the book comes out. Hopefully they hire Autumn Reeser for the role for the eventual movie - girl has got great comedic timming.

Ep Sato Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

People still read books? Once paperbacks starting costing $15 I lost interest in reading. The dvd's the same price and tells the story twice as fast.

J/k by the way. I'm a big Haruki Murakami fan and his stuff is so convoluted that a "short story" for him is 100 pages.

And actually, the story sounds interesting. But I'll wait until it's in softcover...
