Is Leona Lewis really music's next big thing?

Jan 25, 2008, 03:03 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Music

There's been deafening Internet buzz surrounding the upcoming U.S. release of Leona Lewis' debut CD; after all, the winner of Britain's X-Factor has Clive Davis and Simon Cowell in her corner, and she's already a star in Europe. Heck, EW named her one of its Eight New Faces to Watch in '08 a few weeks back, and she gets a shout-out from Good Luck Chuck's music supervisor in this week's issue.

Now, however, the American marketplace is getting its chance to vote yes or no in the matter of Leona Lewis. This week's Billboard announces the official release of her first single, "Bleeding Love," and while her label seems to have put the kibosh on any embeddable versions of the accompanying video, you can give the track a listen (with fan-made karaoke prompts) below.

To me, there's something slightly old-school — and by old-school, I mean circa 2001, and not necessarily in a bad way — about "Bleeding Love." The urgent organ, the driving melody, the general lack of blips, bleeps, and sing-speak spelling lessons recall a simpler time when radio wasn't so afraid of songs that sounded like, well, songs. And while I can see why Lewis has drawn comparisons to Mariah Carey, Lewis seems less obsessed with abandoning melody and climbing Mount Melisma. That said, I'm not sure "Bleeding Love" is ever going to crack the top 100 Most Played tracks on my iPod. I mean, it's a pretty little ditty, but it's missing that extra little bit of musical nougat (sorry, haven't had lunch yet), the emotional wallop of, say, "We Belong Together" or "Irreplaceable." What say you, PopWatchers? What's your prediction for the future of "Bleeding Love," and for Lewis herself?

LEONA WHO?
im sorry bt MARIAH ...YES MARIAH CAREY
whos been doing this since she spoke a word is the VOICE with DYNAMICS, TONE & TEXTURE.
sorry bt Leona is just copy of a typical Mariah. and comparisons to WHITNEY. o my life..what are people listening too, whitney is way beyond, in her own class, shes too powerful and both Whitney & Mariah have already set the standard for other singers. and the Mariah Carey today, well shes not singing 'NOTES' all she has to do is rock up on the red carpet and pose for the cameras and thats it, she makes headlines regardless! So really whats Mariah to prove these days, All Mariahs doing is jus breaking CHART RECORDS and consistnently banging our RADIOS with HITS. thats right LEONA, if u wanna be a star like MIMI, give us a HIT !
and not a 'ONE HIT WONDER"...

I didn't even know her stuff- but saw that this song was #1 on itunes awhile back. So I checked it out... and i reminded me of Umbrella for some reason... the repetition of keep bleedin', keep keep bleedin' love, sort of like ella-ella-ella. I think it's gonna be UGE. With a capital U.

wow slezak! i usually agree with ur idol comments but not this! leona is the most exciting thing ive seen in while! ever since the absence of goosebumps giving songs of before, leona is a pleasent surprise who combines modern hip with amazing vocals! ive been following her since her run on xfactor and its been more than a year and every time i hear her, she gives me chills! and judging from bleeding love overseas and the fact that its already reached 41 on the hot billboard charts, im sure she'll have great success! love ya leona!

Art Sun, Mar 2, 2008 at 12:31 AM EST

I agree w. Louise. I've seen about 6 live performances on YouTube, and even her hand gestures, facial expressions and body language is copied from Mariah. Lovely voice but no originality. I'll take Amy Winehouse any day - problems and all.

I'm not surprised her managers are putting off her first tour until 2010. They're probably hoping that another 2 more years might help her become a better, more interesting performer. She'll have to learn to say more than just "thank you" and "it's a honor to be here."

Louise Sun, Feb 24, 2008 at 01:51 AM EST

Leona Lewis has been overstyled, over produced and is just another Mariah Carey but with no personality or style of her own. She'll want to fly in a couple of years, like Mariah did from Tommy Mottola, but until then, we're going to have a very dated, 'all done before' artist with hair extensions and big dresses to give her the 'diva' title she really doesnt deserve. She does have a fantastic voice, but shes a copy. More power to Clive and Simon for having the intelligence to see how easy it is to draw in the general public. But they should be ashamed of themselves for following a formula instead of developing an original artist.

i relate to it becuase my friends do push my boyfriend away and for some reason i cant say anything or do anything. i'm just scared right now! i think its because i relay on my friends all the time. i just need to break away for a little bit.

Sat, Feb 23, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

i really like it because i can relate to it in so many ways!

visions of love Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

goosebumps. it's like listening to mariah for the very first time. 'no climax' someone says. are you kidding me? obviously they didn't make it thru to the end of the song. yeah, bleeding love's got that old school 90's feel. but honestly, there's nothing wrong with that. i'm tired of some of the stuff we're hearing now. same ol' same ol'... know what i'm sayin'?

check out her xfactor performances on youtube. the girl can sing. holy crap.

Anne C. Thu, Feb 7, 2008 at 02:40 AM EST

Sounds more like Bleating Love...

I personally think she sounds boring and whiny.

Phil Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

Ok, so Billboard just reported this today, that "SPIRIT" is now set to hit U.S. shores a week AFTER Mariah's new cd on April 8th. The Jesse Terrero directed video for "Bleeding Love" debuts on Vh1 on Feb. 4th (hence why the video linked here on YouTube is not image driven!) And that for the U.S. version, Leona has a new song written by the ubquitous Akon, "Forgive Me" & another new track produced by up & coming Madd Scientist and RockCity, "Misses Glass". Madd Scientist produced the ill-received Nicole Scherzinger single, "SuperVillain" which has been available on iTunes since Nov. but is no longer set to be the 3rd single, off her long delayed debut. Irnocailly the next single with which they're attempting to launch her album now is produced by Akon, "Puakenikeni" featuring his Interscope reggae artists Brick & Lace.

Christina Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

"Bleeding Love" has been one of the most played tracks on my iPod for the last 3 months. I have no doubt she will be able to break over here

Rowan Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

She's pretty and very talented, but I wish this song had a climax.. Regardless, anything is an improvement over Amy Whinehouse...

J Lo Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

I live in London now, and after hearing it blast from every single radio station in the land, I have really grown to like this song - even making it Nano-worthy. But it wouldn't be surprised the first time (or the last) a successful British artist couldn't break into the US, yet they seem to play all the drivel from the US in the UK.

Vivi Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 08:49 AM EST

I heard bout her through Perez Hilton's site but I finally got to see and listen to her when I went to London this past holiday. She's a very talented girl. Great voice. And the song rocks. I think it'll do very well, here in the States. I mean, Slezak, you're comparing this song to #1 singles. That's not fair on her. I don't even think her camp is thinking that far. It'll just be a hit. Like "Rehab".

Jason Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

Love Leona! HOPE she makes it big in the US but not getting hopes too high. She's already passed the wife test...my wife has all the lyrics memorized and it's the ringtone for when she calls me :)

Derek Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

I love the song, but there is no climax at the end. It's just slowly simmers down....

Deb from Phx Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

I LOVE Leona's voice, and predict a great future for her! I've been listening to her debut CD ever since I got it for Christmas (from my U.K. friend), and it really grows on you, more so than any of our "American Idol" winners have. I was over there visiting when she won the show last year, and I remember Simon Cowell saying she was the best singer he had ever heard, out of ALL the "Idol" winners - so that compliment alone sums up her awesome talent!

Ben Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

Meh. I downloaded the song last year and enjoyed it more as a curiosity, but it doesn't have the hook to make it a big hit. I wanna know when the Sugaababes or Girls Aloud will break in America. Their music is better than anything Leona Lewis has done.

Lala Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

I liked this song! The bottom line is simple: she can sing!

G.S. Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 02:21 AM EST

Leona Lewis has so many things going for her. She has an amazing talent, she is very beautiful, she has a charming personality and she has Simon Cowell's machine behind her. If you don't like bleeding love, listen to some of her other songs from her new album Spirit, such as "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". Frankly, it is better than the original by Roberta Flack and that is quite an accomplishment.

Nix Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 01:16 AM EST

I can clearly see why this song would be such a hit in Europe.

Steve Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 08:43 PM EST

AC - A Moment Like This was a UK-only bonus track on the CD. It won't be on the American version. It was only included as it had already been number 1 in the UK in the immediate aftermath of her Idolesque win around a year before the album's release. It's just a generic Idol song written by one of Cowell's team of preferred songwriters, be it in Kelly's or Leona's hands.

TO CORRAN Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

DO YOU NOT KNOW HOW TO READ??? "while her label seems to have put the kibosh on any embeddable versions of the accompanying video, you can give the track a listen (with fan-made karaoke prompts) below." DUH.

AC Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

I love the song Bleeding Love because after a while, it's quite catchy. However, her style and the song itself does remind me of 90s Mariah Carey! I actually listened to her album and only 2 songs sound more current (not to mention that she redid A Moment Like This which I don't think Kelly fans would like) so they need to change a lot of the songs to make it a hit.

Corran Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 06:10 PM EST

Why didnt u include the actual video Slezak? Afraid people may actually change their minds after it? This song friggin rules. Best song to be released in 2008. It's also the highest DLed song in the UK of 2007. This girl has so much talent. GO LEONA LEWIS!

Jenn Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

I actually like the song. I didn't think I would. I still think she's a little overpimped . . . saw her on x-factor and didn't think she was amazing. But we'll see. I may end up buying the CD.

Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

This song will be HUGE

Steve Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

She's a stunning performer live as the countless performances on YouTube show - she blew the UK away with a live cover of Snow Patrol's Run on the national Radio1 station (it's a tradition to perform your single and a contemporary cover live - Alicia and Rihanna performed there same month).

The album is old school - songs that aren't afraid to say they're songs. Haven't we all had enough of the same beats and tricks under every vocal performance? It's time for some variety back in "pop" and what better than someone with real vocal talent?

Courtney Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

Blech. Yes. 1993 is the word. I think she is way too pageant-y, and that's what Simon always calls girls derisively and says "off you go" in American auditions... so I don't get it.

Andy Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

Ugh! Leona Lewis is the worst. Her time on "The X-Factor" was like "American Idol: The Greatest Hits," only not so great. And has anyone ever noticed how she kind of sings in slow motion?

Vicky Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

I think Leona Lewis has a pretty voice and I think the song definitely gets in your head with multiple plays, but it does not sound like 2001. Try 1993 and I don't know if that's a good thing.

rockgolf Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

The song's other co-writer is Ryan tedder, the lead singer and writer for OneRepublic ("Apologize").

flighty Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

you think it won't get into your head and demand to be played over and over again, but the more you hear it, the more you'll need to hear it again.

rockgolf Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

So has anyone mentioned that the song was co-written by teen idol Jesse ("Beautiful Soul") McCartney?

Just askin'.

Evan Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Leona Lewis is a phenominal singer and I can't wait for her to hit us here in the US and be hugely successful!!

Bleeding Love is one of those songs that doesn't grab you straight away but after a few listens you begin to appreciate how amazing it is! Leona has a great way of keeping to the melody and not over-singing but she definitely makes her mark with her flawless vocals. The runs at the end are perfect, not too much or too little. I predict she'll be around for a long long time!

Sally in Chicago Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

Her management (Simon & Clive) are handling her just right. They started her in Europe and made her a hit over there and now she's coming to America. Good song, not great, but it fits her voice quite well.

You know -- to get a hit artist these days is very hard, especially one that won't meltdown and blow up.

boredinbklyn Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

soooo I heard about Leona Lewis a while back and wasn't too impressed with the video and song. I downloaded it on my ipod, hit shuffle one day - and I loved it. It is old fashioned, but after a couple of listens - you keep bleeding, keep keep bleeding love. Geez that's kind of creeepy isn't it

Phil Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

Oh and the other reason the comparisons to Mariah would be evident are the fact that Leona is also a bi-racial buxom beauty! I expect she'll be on many top sellers list for 2008, and yes, I can safely predict that and its only January 25th.

Phil Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

"Bleeding Love" is an across the board-smash! I made some mix cds for a g/f who went home to Nebraska for the holidays & put "Bleeding Love" in the middle of of one of them & she called me On X-Mas Eve just to ask me who this girl was & when her album came out or if its out yet! My g/f happens to be the night-time personality for the Top 40 Clear Channel station here in Philly, who plays Justin, T-Pain, & Timabaland all day, every day & YES ITS HER JOB! Anyways, she came back to work after the holidays pleading with her boss if they could start playing "Bleeding Love", but he assured her not yet, but very VERY soon. The comparisons to old-school Mariah are understandable since Leona is the real deal & produced an album worth of material with not ONE hip-hop feature! "Spirit" is set to drop here in the U.S. on March 18th, ironically enough 2 weeks before Mariah Carey's new album "That Chick" drops on April 1st!! Oh & Slezak,I have the Moto Blanco remix of "Bleeding Love", its GREAT!

Kyle Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

"Bleeding Love" has been a staple in my iPod for the past few months now, and I love her whole CD to death. It's been on rotation in my car for a long time now. I think that Leona could really be a huge star in the US if people are willing to give her a shot. Her music reminds me of the early 90's and Mariah Carey before she ruined her voice and went more hip-hop. She is insanely talented and her range is incredible. She is also amazing live, which will undoubtedly help her when she does her US promotional blitz. I hope she does well and I wish her all the best. She is a great talent.

new yorker Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

Totally agree with you Slezak. I don't feel like I'm going to be telling someone I'm bleeding love for them like I told countless people to go "to the left, to the left" or that "we belong together" from hearing this song. It just doesn't hook me onto it like Mariah and Beyonce did. Maybe with enough airplay I'll find it annoying and then start to like it. We'll see how that one goes.
