How awesome is Katy Perry's 'Ur So Gay'?

Jan 7, 2008, 07:03 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Music

Kperry_l I know the lyrics to Katy Perry's "Ur So Gay" are eighteen different kinds of wrong--the opening line about what she'd like her wayward beau to do with his H&M scarf is not for the faint of heart, nor is it entirely safe for work--but I can't stop playing this jaunty little ditty on repeat (despite its misspelled title). I don't care that there's almost no chance corporate radio will embrace a song that includes the lines: "I can’t believe I fell in love/ With someone who wears full make up and/ You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys." I am out and proud fan of "Ur So Gay." Listen for yourself (after the jump) and tell me if you don't love it, too.

"... part of the problem..."
Depends on what is seen as a problem now doesn't it? Homosexual perversion, now that's a problem.

Anni Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 05:34 AM EST

The song is a summary of the youth culture at the time. I find "Ur So Gay" so grotesque that it discredits itself. But more likely Katy and her team have managed to hit and keep balance on the thin line where people see what they want to see.
I wouldn't worry about the song but the people who take it literally. It has managed to provoke quite intelligent discussion. The song isn't really that bad because most of the pop is such a rubbish it's even hard to criticize.
Thanks

i think this song rocks! i mean i could tottlay relate to in in every way and i dont think that its homophobic or anything, i think its just good fun

~Roro Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 08:06 PM EST

I think the actual point everyone is missing is that this tune is awful. It just gives anyone hope that they'll make it in the music business. Maybe some of my stupid songs will be debated about some time soon! Wooh!

Curtis Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

Oh, come on people. This song was meant to be FUNNY, I doubt it has anything to do with anti-gay. In fact, I agree with anyone of the people below who said this had to do with Emo. I think it does have a lot to do with Emo-Have you ever seen them? And this is a SONG, people! Go back to doing something important rather than arguing weither is anti-gay or not. -sigh- People sometimes...

Sunni Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

Sorry just so Loubermensch's comment
have to say this
I know they're possible stereotypes, but who's the person that wrote on a public website, sorta offensive stuff about black people. Really, that is amusing
And she didn't write about blacks did she? Yeah that would be bad, possibly worse because no offence, well I don't care to be honest, they are extremely protective as a race. Its sad that everyone sees these people's as victims when tbh, the world is changing and they themselves are gaining more ground.
They're not victims, by getting offended and causing an uproar only poses yourself as one. So don't. There's no point, because honestly what is one angry little comment on a webpage gonna do.

Sunni Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

Just thought I'd say I agree with neffje.
At the end of the day, it’s just a song
Sure it’s controversial, but as are most things in life.
Political correctness is just another way to say we're too uptight about everything and we'd like for everyone else to recognise it.
Not a fan of political correctness, and I honestly don't care if you are.
I don't really think its homophobia really, I mean... sure it’s pulling up stereotypical points of homosexuality but she's not actually saying I hate all gays, she just doesn’t like the particular person she’s talking about possibly because she thinks they’re a fake.
I dunno... it makes sense in my head and I doubt I'm gonna come back and look at a response, might do. Anyway, if anyone starts insulting this or mentioning my grammar being off, or whatever other immature stuff you've been doing lately, I honestly don't give a crap. So please don't waste your time.
x

Thanks for the intelligent input, dddddddd. Did you notice this isn't MySpace or YouTube? Not everyone chooses to run around saying things like "gay comments suck ass".

neffje Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

By the way, I think having a title like "U Exhibit Stereotypical Homosexual Tendencies" is a more appropriate name, but it doesn't really have the same ring to it. I believe that she is merely attacking her ex-boyfriend in the song. She's not directly attacking homosexuals, even if her lack of foresight seems to cause her words to indirectly attack them.

I think she could have done better for herself by not perpetuating the cycle that exists with stereotypes, but that's her decision. It's just unfortunate that her decision will affect so many others.

I think it would help people to relax, and no be so wound up about what other people are doing. By working yourself up about something, you're actually making it more of a part of your life than if you just did your best do ignore it.
That's my two cents. Spend it how you like.

neffje Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 08:37 AM EST

I think it's funny how people work themselves up by taking offense to other person's opinions. Who needs TV when I can read blogs?

I also think it's amazing that so many people don't know the difference between "your" and "you're", struggle so much with simple spelling, and have horrible grammar. Don't they teach that stuff in elementary school?

Now I'll talk about the song, so I can stay on subject. In this country, we have freedom of speech. That gives Katy Perry the right to say the word "gay" in her song. But you, as a consumer, have the right to refrain from buying her music.

I won't disagre that it's inappropriate, because it is. Artists of all industries will occasionally do something to cause controversy. Why? Controversy brings attention.

So if you don't like it, then don't buy it or listen to it. It's that simple.

Nobody can please everybody. Even if you dislike something, there might be someone else who likes that same thing. We're all different.

Flash Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

Miss.Correcto, if 'ur' is supposed to mean 'your', that's fine. But the title of the song (written properly, anyway) is 'You're So Gay', not 'Your So Gay'. See the difference? Ugh. Probably not...

Lethe Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:02 AM EST

I don't love or hate Katy Perry's music. I suppose I agree with Nika - "Ur So Gay" IS realistic as a bitter teenage rant. I don't find the song offensive, so much as I'm offended by the fact that such a song could be written - that the word "gay" is used as a slur to mean "stupid" or "sexually inadequate." Katy Perry's songs about adolescent experiences are not the problem - anyone who uses or tolerates this kind of language is part of the problem. Just as shameful, in my opinion, is the way this discussion is going. Since when does a person deserve to get attacked, just because he or she disagrees with you, or even with the majority? Haven't you ever held an unpopular opinion? Wouldn't you wish to be treated with respect if you did? Remember, the folks here who are speaking up against the song are taking a stand against discriminatory lanaguage, even used in a casual manner. They may well wish Katy Perry all the best - singing about other things. What's wrong with that?

Loubermensch Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

Hey guys! I have an idea!!!

Let's have Katy Perry perform a song entitled:
"Ur So Black."

Yes! Can you imagine it. The song will portray a white man who abandons his pregnant girlfriend. But that's not it! He will also be jobless, a drug addict, and have several illegitimate children. All because he is "so black."

Now tell me that would not be offensive? prejudice? bigoted? racist?

Such a song would rightly cause a national offense. Giving this hypothetical circumstance, I think it's unfortunate that "Ur So Gay" has not propagated a greater outrage.

It perpetuates a stereotype that continues to defame the homosexual. As a society we need to get over the ignorance that projects the homosexual as emotionally perplexed, overly sensitive and entirely superficial.

Perry's fan-base is composed of young people who don't yet understand the scorns and bigotry that stereotypes produce. I openly accuse Katy Perry of carelessness.

I'm a gay male college student and this is my response.

laura Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 08:51 AM EST

whahaha that's funny.
everyone is complaning about the fact that this song should be assaulting for gay and that that it isnt respectful..
hello, she wrote it for a exboyfriend who turned wannabe emo. To tease him, and if not, whatever, let her.
And I LOVE the song!!<3

sorry for my english, Im from the netherlands XD

bob Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 04:48 AM EST

kate perry has made this song politically incorrect intentionally just to gain the publicity of todays youth, what I don't understand is why anyone with half an ounce of respect for themselves would drop down to that level of maturity. what is kate perry like 14? you would think she might have more common sense. But hey thumbs up for the kissed a girl song, gotta love that music video.

Nika Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

Is the song trashy and in poor taste? Yes. Is it delibrately homophobic? Nah, not really. It's a junior high pissing contest. The one redeeming aspect of the song, in my opinion, is that there's a grain of realism in the idea of some angry teenage girl who is being overlooked by some artsy, misunderstood boy and has no better way of expressing herself than calling him gay and talking about Mozart.

As far as offensive lyrics go, there are much bigger fish to fry. It's got a likable tune and enough titillation to generate interest, and that's pretty much the point. The thing that baffles me is, people who like Katy are all raving about how rad and progressive she is, (what a pioneer! she kissed a girl and liked it! girl power!) and that's just silly. Straight girls kiss other straight girls. Usually alcohol is involved, along with a cheering male audience. It is what it is. What it is not is progressive.

TheBookPolice Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Oh, we're SUPPOSED to talk about the song now? Because I've been told repeatedly that I SHOULDN'T come here to talk about the song because my opinions are wrong! I think this song is offensive. Maybe not intentionally bigoted, but certainly WAY too comfortable with the kind of schoolyard taunting that no one needs more of. We need this song like we need more dingbats in trenchcoats shooting up Colorado because they were taunted in school.
Oh, and it was me who penned the classic "Dear She Won" post. It's disappointing that you think you've got such a handle on expressing yourself. Take a moment to go back and read what you've typed. What's "doning"? "Especial"? If you're a high school student, I hope you're going to pay better attention from now on. The world is not AOL.
Do people even use AOL anymore?

Miss.Correcto Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

ur is saying your!

If your not talking about.... Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:09 AM EST

Umm "DEAR SHE WON" yeah tht person if your not going to express your views then dont talk about some one who is at least giving their thoughts. if your not going to talk about this song dont get on this site and exspect people to wanna hear wht you have to say. And if She Won had a college degree why would she say "Peace out Girl Scout"? like she was a teenager? i dont an adult would say tht. A adult would never say "Peace Out Girl Scout" other than to their children. But if your not commenting to comment about the song dont comment. cuz other people have no right to question others way of speaking especial if they are to chicken to make up a name/ to chicken to talk about wht they think of the song.
-(DEAR SHE WON!)-not to she won, the person who commented saying Dear She Won Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST.
ALso dont critize some one when they say they dont use big words or say they dont spell good. That was really low who ever you are.And next time u comment talk about the song

I'Got"your'answer right here! Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

Dear She Won who is tht why didnt you just make up a name and say
Insert Name Here to She Won?
cuz now we wont be able to see ur name and as She Won! said get a feel for who we are talking to, the names tht you choose help people feel out wht you can say, wht they want and also why they are on this site.

She Won to "DEAR SHE WON" Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

i dont have a college degree or a high school diploma but some day i will, but for now im a high school student. I hope u feel stupid for being rude to a high school student, trying to have her exspress her thoughts.Im glad you took the time to correct me though, cuz it makes me think tht i threaten you by my talented writing skills.Im just a kid and your talking about my writing. Makes me think your trashing my spelling and such because you dont have any responces for my writing because you know im correct. So keep it up correct my ur,u,and the lack of periods. But if you had aol u would know u=you ur=your and no on aol we doning really use periods.and next time dont just write dear she won, write your little name u came up with it will help me get a better feel for who im writing to by the name you choose.

~mikey Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 03:22 AM EST

Offensive... It's using the word "gay" as a derogatory tool. Any way you slice it, it's offensive. It's amazing that the gay community hasn't made more of a stir than they have.

The idea that any man that isn't a big. butch football player with little or no emotion is in fact "gay" is also offensive to the straight male community, is it not? God forbid a straight guy has a sense of fashion. cares for the environment, and might in fact be in touch with his emotions and communication skills.

Gay men and 12-16 year old girls are the people that control the top of the pop charts in this country. I would think that more gay men would have something to say about this kind of material.

I think that we should be taking steps towards a time and a place where we're not substituting the name of someone's sexual preference for the words "stupid" or "lame," or the over all concept that a man that can't meet your needs must be gay man, because only gay men could possibly fit that criteria.

Dear She Won Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

You're right. You didn't use big words. You barely used words, PERIOD. "U" is not a word. "Ur" is not a word. "B4" is not a word. "Your" when referring to the phrase "you are" is not the correct word.
You got ME thinking, though. These are my thoughts: "Do you have a college degree? A high school diploma even?"

mae Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 07:28 PM EST

i think the people who hate this song are making a big deal over nothing. the song is about a guy who is soo incredibly metro that he seems gay. yes the way shes saying gay isn't exactly a compliment but she isn't bashing gays either.

her ex-boyfriend was sooo metro that he seemed gay. how is this song so controversial when rap songs can degrade women almost in every song?

Having said that, I think she has the right to sing whatever she wants, i happen to like the song and im gay but I also know that people are sensitive to this as an "attack." Its a very thin line. But if someone wants to be offended let them. Their view point is just as valid.

JC Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:27 AM EST

It'd be the same thing as if a song said "UR such a n*gger and you aren't even black..."

TheBookPolice to She Won!! Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 09:06 AM EST

You give me too much credit. The fact that I've posted my comments here does nothing to increase the popularity or fame of Katy Perry. The fact that Slezak wrote about her already did that. I'm not adding any new publicity by commenting. And I'd say that, from the critical reviews of her new album, she's not exactly drowning in praise right now.
Meh. I'm done now.

1TWOmanyQUESTION? Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

If we are talking about Katy Perry's your so gay, why did some1 write "I KISSED A GIRL AND I LIKED IT" thats not the song we are talking about here.
And who is "ME AGAIN"?
And why don't you want us to know what your name was when you wrote before? ALFREDO,FETTUCCINE,RIGATONIE? im just joking about the reference to the sause names lol. and yes ik i prolly spelled the names wrong.

As you can see the more u speak of her song the more u put her on the map. You may think yes, im doing shomething by voicing my opion(in a negative way to the song Your So Gay By Katy Perry but you just make her a better known person. If you dont like her/her songs its fine to voice your thoughts of wisdom but remember that the more you talk wheather its in a positive or negative way you just spread the word about her and her musical talents.
I'm not saying don't talk about her is a negative way if you dont like her im saying remember you saying something bad about her/her songs is just promoting her around the globe. S-money you should change your sigh from a normal S to $-money that would be cooler i think, but if you like it the way it is thats fine too.
Well remember no matter what you say about Katy Perry she won cuz she got you to speak her name and have more and more people hear it, and more people listening to her means more fans.

TheBookPolice to SHE WON Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

OMG, I like totally didn't think of that.
I'm not trying to make her song go away. I'm trying to express my opinion of it, and maybe shine some light on the casual bigotry for which her use of the term "gay" apologizes. Y'know, the more you respond to me, the more powerful I become. I'm like the motherf.cking Emperor.

Am I (or anyone else who doesn't like this song) affecting your ability (or the ability of anyone else who likes it) to enjoy the song by vocalizing my dislike of it? Why aren't you standing up for my right to feel offended by the song?

Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

i just wanna say if u hate the song then dont listen to it, but let the other people enjoy it.

TheBookPolice Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

I DON'T listen to her. The reason? I think she's a one-note flash in the pan who uses junior high-level homophobic insults (whether she consciously means them to be homophobic or not is another issue, but she's certainly using the term "gay" very thoughtlessly) to get pub.
Oh, and try to type a coherent complete sentence. Just because I have a vague understanding of what you're trying to say doesn't mean you communicated it well. Kinda like someone we know.

S-money Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

Some people think this song is bashing the homosexual. Some say she has an incredible way with words you love this song and u hate it. You love her meanings but you hate the way she gets to the meanings, if you love her you also hate her. Basically you love Katy Perry and you hate her at the same time but i must say some people have taken the hate to far. Also some take the love to far. You haters and lovers are more alike than you think and if you dont like her DONT LISTEN TO HER DURRR!!!!! and yeah u hate it u dont listen to it, and if she bothers you so much just go and file complaint at the "I'M A BABY AND HATE HER YOUR SO GAY SONG BUT I LISTEN TO IT AND GET MAD, EVENTHOUGH I COULD JUST STOP LISTENING TO IT AND PROBLEM OVER" haha well just giving you the heads tht if u dont like the song just dont listen to it, tht sound good? well it better cuz people will play it cuz not every1 is a hater like you!

A Concerned Straight Male Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

It doesn't matter how you phrase it. The song admittedly uses the term "gay" as an insult. This is blatant homophobia, and you are part of the problem if you like it. Only bigots and open homophobes can justify this song.

Morgan Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

U guys are completely gay if u think gay is a synonym for stupid. but it's not she just means that he's like incredibly metrosexual so everyone stop whining.

Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 01:48 AM EST

to continue from the last post, mine... if you dont find this song even at least a little funny, you dont get out much and you need to lighten up. dude, what she writes about is whats going on in the world, for teens and college kids. seriously. so get a life instead of spending all of your time dissing on someone. it aint nice. thank you. good day. go listen to her whole cd. then see if you can diss her you have problems and just leave her alone. peace.

Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 01:44 AM EST

i think everyone is freaking out. if you dont like her, w.e. deal with it dont spend all your time bashing her. she talks about stuff that more people go through than you think instead of sex and crappy breakups like EVERYONE else does. katy perry, you love her or you hate her, get over it. go get a life and listen to music you like instead of criticizing music you dont. dont waste your time, get a life. personally i love this song and all her songs, they are real, instead of about sex. and in this song when shes talking about "youre so gay and you dont even like boys" im pretty freaking sure she means shes dealing with a guy that cares more about his appearance and how he apears to others than most girls do, aka hes acting like a sterotypical girl (the sterotype of a girl with a lot of issues) and in todays society gay is often used for a guy that acts a lot like a girl of is really emotional. so she is calling him gay in that sence, not meaning to diss on homosexuals.

Simone Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

Firstly, you all should calm down. You guys are making a mountain out of a mole hill!!

Secondly, thank you TheBookPolice! Ashley was pretty silly in that idea of 'gay meaning stupid' I personally am insulted to the highest level. I hate when people use 'gay' to mean something bad. All the damn negative adjectives in the english language, and i'm sure 'gay' ain't one of them. I'm gay, and i'm very smart all around. I'm not intelligent than most straight people i know, especially those who use 'gay' in that way.

Third, people back off of the rants about Katy Perry. You all really need to stop bashing. No one likes it, no one cares. Please keep that kind of thing to yourself. That's not what this person posted this for. I happen to like Katy Perry, but the last thing i'm gonna do is fight you about it. That's dumb. Everyone is entitled to their OWN opinion.

Fourthly, I apologize for mispellings.

fleah Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 06:48 PM EST

no, no, no, she means "gay" as in "gay." he's her boyfriend. he seems gay. she's pissed.
surely even the non-gay among you can understand these lyrics.

Goon Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

Katy Perry is a phony Lily Allen rip-off trying to get attention by lame attempts to be subversive. She's like the music version of Diablo Cody. Laboured hype.

T Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

Love that song. I swear, she dated my ex too. xD

TheBookPolice to Ashley Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

Listen to yourself. "gay as in like stupid"? In WHAT dictionary has "gay" EVER meant "stupid"? Where do you think that "meaning" came from? And do you think it was meant at one time to be COMPLIMENTARY to gay people to have the word associated with their preference ALSO associated with stupidity?

C'mon. This is a no-brainer. The song is infantile and doesn't serve any good purpose. If you think that it need only make your a.s.s. shake to be worthwhile, then you lead an unexamined and careless existence.

With some one that wears more makeup than..."

these are the correct lyrics from Katy Perry's myspace. www.myspace.com/katyperry

TheBookPolice Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

Sorry, not ROB, comrade_x

TheBookPolice Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

Oh yeah, and to EmOtionallyunavail...you defended Katy Perry by virtue of the rest of her catalog. And now her second single is about experimenting with girl-on-girl sexuality only because she was drunk. This girl's got some problems with normal, healthy sexuality, and it's coming out in every song I've heard of hers.
(here's a political point for you, ROB...what do you think years of abstinence-only education gets you? how about, "a warped sense of how humans interact sexually"?)

TheBookPolice Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

If the song has nothing to do with being gay, then why use the word "gay"?
If the word "gay" in this context isn't meant to be an insult, then why is it used as an "attack"?
If the word "gay" in this context is meant to attack a man by way of his sexuality, how is it ANYTHING other than homophobia?
Not all homophobes want to "burn the gays." Some of them just don't think they're very valuable as human beings because of their sexuality, and that's really not much better.
There's no political point to this. The offense I take is on a purely human level. This kind of BS has been going on for a long time, and just because "it's a phrase kids use", doesn't mean it SHOULD be used.

Em Sat, May 31, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

The way I see it, "Ur So Gy" has nothing to do with being gay. It's about the EMO's!

Wed, May 28, 2008 at 11:08 PM EST

This song was for her boyfriend. This is just directed to her boyfriend, no one else. She thought HE was too full of himself and decided to tell him to piss off my telling him he was gay. She isn't anti gay and its not a 'phrase' teens use. I mean it is, but she's like...21?

Jessica Sat, May 24, 2008 at 12:46 AM EST

P.S. the music video is equally funny http://youtube.com/watch?v=zluCpm93vfg

Jessica Sat, May 24, 2008 at 12:42 AM EST

actually she is saying that she dated someone who was too full of himself and she couldnt stand it hence "you're so gay and you dont even like boys" i think the song is hysterical and awesome. it's already on my playlist.

Fredo Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:16 AM EST

Eh. I can take a joke like the next dude, but, not crazy about the lyrics. I think the beat is catchy + I do like her voice, actually, but I'm not now + never have been a fan of using "gay" as a handy insult for a guy's masculinity. Newsflash: there are gay men who aren't into any of the stuff mentioned in her song. And before you bash me over the head w/ your anti-PC movement, know that I'm not uptight, but have a problem w/ people equating "gay" to something negative (or laughable) for good reason.

ROB Fri, May 9, 2008 at 09:30 AM EST

the song is funny. the dude that said the song is anti gay is an idiot because it is the opposite. the song infers that gay stereotypes are not limited to gays but also straight men. lm a huge fan of the artist and know several of her other songs which are nothing like this one but equally ingenious.

wow - the future of music... ffs. Jaunty little ditty my arse.. sometimes it's better to just keep your mouth shut.

yooshooloo Tue, Apr 29, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

rob...
I don't understand your reference to Carrie Underwood. I don't think they sound anything alike.

comrade_x Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

people. come on. i highly doubt it was meant to be anti-gay. its just a phrase teenagers say. and im pretty sure it was used simply to insult whatever ex she wrote it about. shes not singing "hey yall lets go burn a fag" shes simply saying an insult that hurts the most for many guys because it attacks their sexuality. i mean seriously people. its a song about an ex boyfriend. its honestly really stupid to sit there and say shes anti-gay simply because she called her ex gay. there are tons of girls out there who, after a break-up, call their ex gay. their not homophobic, just angry. take the song for what it is. nothing deep and poetic and life changing, but a fun little pop song about an ex boyfriend. get over yourselves people. now a days everyone has to make a big political deal over everything. people are ridiculous.
if you dont like the song thats fine no one's forcing you to, but dont come up with reasons why its socially unacceptable. just say you dont like it and move on.

weaselspleen Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 09:11 AM EST

This song is proof that the contemporary college education is middle school with beer.
Way to fail, generation of losers.

asas Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

cool song

Brad Ford Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

Anne Marie, what kind of 'real' music do you listen to? Just curious.

anne marie Tue, Jan 15, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

So who or should I say what management team/record company would let someone release this as their debut song? Do they not listen to REAL music anymore.. STUPID people they must be.. Katy..dear..save yourself and get a new management team..

NancyGirl Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

It's not insulting, the word 'gay.'

I mean, let's be honest: it never used to mean homosexuality, it used to mean happy.

so now it's been appropraited into another meaning... why can't it be used in yet another context, then?

Come on, get over yourselves, people. Hilarious song!!!

waiting2exhale Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

i found this blog that has a lot of Katy Perry stuff on it. Its called Markusisthedrug.com oh hey! love love love Katy P! thinking about being her full time stalker.

thin mint Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

Her head is kind of a weird, boxy shape.

TheBookPolice Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 04:21 PM EST

That, at least, is a defense I can appreciate.
However, given that she's trying to make her mark with this song (see her Myspace page), I choose to not give her a further look on the basis of this extremely disappointing debut.
It's too bad, because the beat isn't awful.

EmOtionallyunavail Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

Honestly, I think you should check out her other songs and see that she is an artist of many different shades, not just this one and THAT is why I stick up for her. And forgive me for forgetting the ' between the you and the are... I have sinned greatly in the typo world. Please throw the first html stone.

TheBookPolice Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

Well, emO, "your" presenting a great example for others to follow in living their lives. I only wish everyone else valued immaturity and offensiveness the same way you do.
I guess this Katy person does, though, and she seems to be doing all right.
Maybe being a condescending jerk leading the unexamined life is the secret.

Tim Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 08:06 AM EST

I agree with Matt. It's offensive. Plus, I think she's trying to be cute. She should try harder. Then again, she shouldn't.

emOtionallyunavail Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 03:18 AM EST

sorry son, I got peter pan syndrome...
and growing up just means your gonna be dead sooner.

TheBookPolice Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 10:41 PM EST

"emtionallyunavail", who are you addressing? Your ridiculous post doesn't indicate a target.

But I'm not middle aged, I don't watch Deal or Idol, and I am very much aware of emo. This song, on the other hand, says almost nothing about emo; only the make-up line (and maybe the suicide bit--and who doesn't crack the hell up at suicide jokes? I KNOW I DO..n't.) even hints at an emo target.

So when a song goes on at length about taste in music, fashion, sensitivity and inadequate sexual performance, I'm sorry: IT'S NOT ABOUT EMO TO THE AVERAGE LISTENER. It's about "OMG, you're like totally gay." And the world has had about enough of that kind of "humor."

It's about time we grew up.

emtionallyunavail Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

Unfortunately you don't get that this song is not some adult political debate over freedom of speech, but just a song about the hilarious scene called EMO. My friend, this song was not meant for your middle aged ears... stick to your American Idol greatest hits record and reruns of deal or no deal please cause you JUST DON'T GET IT.

rob Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

Ugh.

Forget that this woman rips off the image of Lily Allen, the music of Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" (minus the range), and the lame misspelling/AIM shorthand trend seen in "U + UR hand" among others.

No, this song is most irritating because it reinforces the infuriating notion that gay stereotypes are funny if they come in a light-hearted and cute package. (Sidenote: Mozart and electric cars are "gay" now? I guess good taste in music and environmental concern means you have a sexual preference towards men. I'd better alert my girlfriend!) We've made radical advances in proving that rigid roles like race and gender are socially-constructed; it seems like gays are the only minority who are continually derided and stereotyped in the media. This "You know how I know you're gay?" mentality should be treated the same way as using the n-word. How is it different?

Sorry if I sound uptight but the only message I'm getting from this childish song is "LOL UR SOOOO GAY ROTFLMAO!!!"

Matt Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

Wow. Not only is it kinda boring, but it's all kinds of offensive. What is this, junior high? "You're so GAY! You homo! You're such a f-ag!" Real nice.

Nick Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

These Lily Allen copies (Kate Nash included) aren't as good and are rather annoying

TheBookPolice Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

And who the hell is Katy Perry any damn way?

TheBookPolice Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

This kind of "anti"-gay speech is just plain boring. Not funny. Not awesome. Not edgy. Not even really hateful. Boring. And that's what makes it bad: that the use of "gay"ness as an insult is done without any emotion or soul. If it were malicious, you could at least hang your hat on that. But it's just stupid.

Dillon Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 11:08 AM EST

Love Katy Perry.. her cover of "use Your Love" is amazing!! This song is soo funny! I heard she got a record deal, anxious to see more of her!

Tyler D Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

Come on T-Rex, you can't be that clueless.

This song was only "m'eh." Kind of humorous, but it's missing something to raise it above just being another amusing song.

Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 03:41 AM EST

No More Kate Nash [Foundations] than Lily Allen.

...catchy

Liz Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 12:51 AM EST

Yep. Boys of my generation. Cute but oh so Lily Allen.

BrandonK Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 11:10 PM EST

T-Rex: Gender confused?
Slezak, I'm pretty sure our taste in music must overlap SOMEWHERE, but it's certainly never been evident to me from reading your "Why wasn't this a bigger hit?" posts or this one. LOL

kittypurryfan Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

Yay! Katy Perry... she's got the same messed up humor as Borat. Lurve her. I can't wait to see what she does this year... this song was of course written for MY ex boyfriend, stealer of my flat iron and jeans! LOL!

Jules Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

This song is alright, but Katy's other songs are so much better.

skye Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 09:42 PM EST

yeah, I love it. Even though its mean, and un-politically correct. I like it :)

Ellipsian Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

Once again--AGAIN!--Slezak, we are so *NSYNC (sorry...)! I literally just discovered this song less than 24 hours ago and I dig. I have to agree with bootsycolumbia that the lyrics > the music, but I dig nonetheless. And you just KNOW those remixes are coming soon to a gay club near you...

Okay, T-Rex, I'll bite: why exactly are MR. Slezak's posts "gender confused"? (I admit it: I can't wait to hear this...)

Confidential Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 09:17 PM EST

yeah.. Some friends and I were just dicussing the bread of man we refer to as the she b!tch.

bootsycolumbia Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 08:40 PM EST

Not that awesome. The song has some good lyrics, but the music is kind of boring.

Lola Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 08:02 PM EST

It's so-so.

I love the whistling in the background of the song. :)
T-Rex, leave Slezak alone. He writes awesome posts on this blog.

Lurve it!!!
