Remembering Heath Ledger

Heathledgertribute_l Like you, the folks here at EW HQ thought it was a cruel hoax when reports started surfacing this afternoon that Heath Ledger was dead at 28, the second promising young star in less than a week to die. The exact cause and circumstances surrounding his death are still unknown, but we can only hope that the performer will be remembered mainly for his all-too-brief but triumphant acting career.

Most fans will remember Ledger for his Oscar-nominated turn in Brokeback Mountain (pictured), as well they should. His role marks one of the great, astonishing acting transformations of our time. I loved Ledger's early, lighter work — his goofy romantic lead in the teen-Shakespeare farce 10 Things I Hate About You, his sly, tongue-in-cheek turn as a medieval sports hero in A Knight's Tale — and I even enjoyed his dramatic posturing as the callow rebel of The Patriot and the resentful son of Monster's Ball. But I'd never have guessed that he had that Brokeback performance in him. From his slow gait to his swallowed baritone speech, his lonesome cowpoke Ennis seemed like a brand new person, yet one the actor fully inhabited. Indeed, it's now impossible to imagine that any of his contemporaries could have done a better job, so indelible is Ledger's performance. And who didn't cry at the end when he said, "Jack, I swear..."?

After Brokeback, Ledger's characters began to take a darker turn. There was the drug-addiction drama Candy, which I fear I'll never be able to watch again without cringing, and his forthcoming turn as a bedraggled, scary-looking Joker in this summer's Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight. I'm sure no one will be able to watch that one either without seeing unintended ironies and eerie portents of doom. It's always facile to read an actor's off-screen life into his choice of roles (if you saw Ledger's depiction of Bob Dylan's crumbling marriage in the recent I'm Not There, you could be forgiven for being reminded of the recent dissolution of Ledger's off-screen union with Michelle Williams), but still, for now, I prefer to remember the jokey, cheerful, cheeseball Ledger of Knight's Tale and 10 Things, movies enhanced by the sense they conveyed that Ledger was thoroughly enjoying himself. It'll be a while before I can watch Brokeback again without getting misty-eyed for the wrong reason.

Had he been alive when this film was released, there wouldn't have been as much hype about it and we all know it. It only did well financially because of this actor's death. It as a mediocre film and performance by Heath, at best.

Would he have won the Oscar had he been alive? I highly doubt it. Had he not killed himself no one would have noticed him at all or the film.

Feeling very happy about that posthumous Golden Globe he won, Heath really deserved it. But sametime feeling so sad that he's gone and will never know how people all over the world are missing him as a person and as an actor. So sad that he will never stand on thouse podiums and have his own winner's speech. Really missing him...

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Heath, may Your spirit be free.

Susan G. Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

Heath Ledger, a man with extraordinary talent... gone before our eyes. His protrays as a young teenage eye in 10 Things I Hate About You, got us caught. The son of a soldier in The Patriot brought us to tears. His breakthrough performance as Ennis de Mar in Brokeback Mountain showed us an actor. Finally, in the Dark Knight, his performance as The Joker memorized us. His performance showed his diversity and how deep a person can go. Heath, we love you and miss you so much. Your daughter will always be loved and know that she will know her father through our amazing films. Rest In Peace Heath.

Heath Ledger was a young man who's career was going to explode due to that extraordinary performance as the Joker. It was so unexpected and very sad to hear the news that had died at such a young age. I remember sitting in the theatre waiting to watch The Dark Knight and thinking about Heath...wondering if he is as great as he looks in this role. When he first appeared on screen I couldn't take my eyes off of him and I found myself waiting with anticipation for his next scene...mesmerizing!! When the credits roled I thought two things..I wanna see that again! And how sad that this unbelievablely talented young man was gone. My heart goes out to his family and friends, especially Matilda. His daughter will never really know her father. RIP Heath. You will be missed but not forgotten.

Michelle Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 11:59 PM EST

Heath was an incredible actor. He touched my heart. I am so very sad that he is no longer with us.

Rida Tahir Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

how great an actor he was ... JOKER says it all ... a young actor playing that role ... makes it all the more special and more terrifying indeed!!! He is a great loss ... to his family

Tony A. Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:15 AM EST

Sydney, Heath was not a drug addict. However, six types of prescription drugs were found in his apartment. Mixing two of these killed him! Okay Rose, Heath Ledger was the young star of a campy TV Show on Fox. It was short lived and Heath was like 19 at the time. Name the show.

Rose Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 11:05 AM EST

Omg i love heath I AM THE NUMBER ONE JOKER FAN even ask me on my screename ha ha jk jk anyways i love him i know everything about him i have a huge cardboard cut out of him and a bunch of posters come on ask me a question any questoin i bet you i know it

Tony A. Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 07:57 PM EST

Yes it is sad and tragic about Heath. You say he's the greatest of this century? Hmmm. Lest we forget. Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, James Cagney, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Joan Crawford, Marlon Brando, Audrey Hepburn. They are gone but not forgotten. They are immortalized on the silver screen. They paved the way for a young man from Perth,Australia. A young man named Heath who had stars in his eyes. So he came to America and landed the lead role in the now forgotten TV Show Roar. Ledger wooed Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You and captured the heart of every teenage girl in America! He then went on to play Mel Gibson's son in The Patriot. A troubled prison guard in Monster's Ball. The gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain. The evil Joker in The Dark Knight. Heath had made the list. But he did not live long enough to realize his full potential. Critics have compared him to the legendary Brando. I wonder, who will accept Heath's Oscar for The Joker at The Academy Awards? Hmm.

HEATHILOVEU Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

First off let me say that his name is heath i have seen several times some of u calling him keith! its heath now he is the best damn actor in this century, i cry all the time thinkingt about this tradgedy. trhe death WAS accidental. poor matilda adnd no one has mentioned POOR jake gyllenhaal! heaths best role was the joker but his best movie fir sure was brokeback mountain. this death is quite depressing. i will alwazys love u heath ledger! RIP 4.4.1979-1.22.2008

Tony A. Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 02:59 AM EST

And that is the real tragedy. We all have our idols whether they be actors or rock stars or yes, even wrestlers. We give these people "superstar" status and we tend to forget that they are human like us. Heath Ledger was rumored to have caught walking pneumonia while on the set of his last film because they filmed in cold weather and the rain. Former girlfriend Michelle Williams had stated that Ledger was a chronic insomniac. Poor Heath Ledger doubled up on Ambien and got addicted to sleeping pills. He over medicated himself and died. It wasn't a suicide. He was crazy about his two-year old daughter Matilda. It was death by misadventure and it could happen to any one of us. Taking one pill too many or mixing two dangerous drugs together. Now,Heath Ledger joins a long list that includes the likes of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, ELVIS, John Belushi, River Phoenix, Kurt Cobain, John Candy, Chris Farley, Eddie Guererro, and Brad Renfro. Just to name a few. Tragic.

Tony A. Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 02:45 AM EST

That film was The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus,a fantasy film about good and evil with Christopher Plummer and Verne Troyer. That film would have been his last but Ledger died halfway through production. He has since been replaced by Johhny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law but Gilliam cannot find a distributor even as Dark Knight continues to make history, taking down Star Wars! I don't think The Joker killed Heath Ledger. Sadly,he had his own demons to wrestle with. This was a shy man who hated being a "poster boy" for the GOD awful A Knight's Tale. This was a young man who was compared to Marlon Brando for playing a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain. This was a publicity shy man who hated to give interviews. Heath Ledger was a victim of his own environment. He was a "superstar" in his own right but he could handle the heavy toll that comes with being in the spotlight 24/7. Ledger once complained about not being able to go out for frozen yogurt without getting his picture snapped.

Tony A. Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 02:33 AM EST

THE DARK KNIGHT was a testament to just how great Heath Ledger could have been. He walks in,tears off his mask and steals the whole entire movie. With his punk-rock take on The Joker inspired by the likes of angry rocker Sid Vicious and the cruel punk thug played by Sir Malcolm MacDowell in the classic A Clockwork Orange. Ledger told interviewers that he shut himself off from everyone and locked himself away in a cpamped little apartment to prepare for his definitive role. That of The Joker once made famous by none other than the master himself,Jack Nicholson. According to friends,Heath was depressed over his split with Michelle Williams and that's why he threw himself into the demonic Joker character. It would prove to be his swan song, his final complete performance. When The Joker is onscreen, the audience is silent and they do not know what he'll do next. Some say playing The Joker took its toll on Ledger but he was in good spirits when he took on role in the new Terry Gilliam film.

MARY Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

Was The Dark Knight the last film he worked on? Or was there another film Heath was working on at the time of his death?

Just another Batman fan Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

I think all the fuss about Brokeback Mountain is ridiculous when Batman far outdoes it. Heath Ledger won my affection when i saw his role as the joker. Even his parents said he really loved playing the role, “The Dark Knight is everything we hoped it would be and more. Heath loved the experience of creating this character and working on the film. We are so proud of our boy.” .
Heath Ledger played his best role in batman, & its proof positive w/ the response from fans, i mean i myself saw it twice in theaters and want to see it again!
I will miss Heath, not because of his role as a cowboy in Brokeback, but because he could have continued to move up into better & better roles. The saddest thing will be when/if they replace him as the joker. He was very good, i wont say he was the best in batman(there were many GREAT actors in the movie) but he made the movie scary. [i think he could be matched as the joker, but it will be hard no doubt]

I saw the movie "Dark Night" yesterday; Heath Ledger is great in his character (Joker). He was very young to die; atleast he would have seen the success of the his released Movie! May God rest his soul in eternal peace!

Krista Meek Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 09:48 PM EST

I just saw Batman last night. Heath Ledger was absolutely fabulous in the movie. He was a very young bright actor that had a very promising future. He was well on his way to rising to the top. I was very impressed in his role as "the joker". Heath Ledger is an actor that died too young and left a beautiful girl and mother behind. His image will always be presereved. Heath had a lot to give and because of too much meds and not enough coverage, a young, talanted, attractive actor died at too young of an age. God Bless You Heath and your family, espicially your dear daughter Matilda. She and Michelle will alaways know how special you were and always will be. God Bless you and your family.

Awesome actor irreplaceable the joker well he made him so scary and yet he is so different in other films like lords of Dogtown awesome film by the way he will be missed dearly

I just finally saw the dark knight yesterday because I couldn't bring myself to go see it but what an amazing job he did. How awful and cruel that we will never br graced by his amazing talents again. He was my favorite actor and I'm not really a fan of batman. I only saw it for him. I see every movie he is is only cuz I know I will not be dissapointed. And even though I cried through most of the dark knight, I'm glad he left behind this mind blowing performance as the joker to remember him by.

Why is the media doing such a dastardly act of smearing the reputation of this” big loss” late young talent? First the drug video. Now, his sort of “losing it in the head” portrayal of the joker. It’s as if they would want you to be disturbed and not moved when The Dark Knight hits the screens this summer. It’s like they would want Heath to be remembered tragically disturbing, and not for what he does to his roles. I wonder--if they were ones to portray the part of a sinister villain in a very big movie, what sort of preparations might they make? I wonder if they can even get themselves to do justice to the role? I bet they might give up and think of just hiring an actor to do this. And that is what Heath was. So they just better leave him and his work alone because they can’t get what he did. MEDIOCRITY clearly wasn’t his game. So they’d just better stick to something they know better--whatever their mediocre minds can muster—-take out the trash maybe.

Everyone must see the movie "CANDY" with Keith Ledger.Beautiful, but very disturbing movie, Keith Ledger is absolutely amazing. This movie was filmed in Ledger's native Australia,in 2005. Go to MOVIEFONE and watch the trailer. Also watch the interview. I rented this movie and have watched it several times! It is not for everyone.....

He first captured my attention in The Four Feathers. He was the brightest in that cast. I sat in my seat, thinking, "Who is this man, and why haven't we seen him more before this movie?" After reading his Rolling Stone magazine interview, I came to realize that I had been right about him, all along. He lived for his craft. He had problems, but who doesn't?? And then the media and the whole gang of paparazzi came to hound him and made him miserable. I had no idea he had anxiety attacks from such an early age. I thought it had began much more recently. Then I understood that the media exposure for him was probably a thousand times more taxing in terms of psychological stress than any other cerebrity. Other cerebrities such as Duchovny, Cloony, and Pitt have repeatedly commented on the problems of becoming famous: they want to ravish you with gifts and praises, just as much as they want to drop you and tear you to pieces. Heath was cautious, but it happened to him, nevertheless.

it is so unfair... he was (and still is) great actor. And every time i think about it i start to cry...;( he was such a good person, such a young person... he didn't diserve this. My heart is with his family and with his friends. take care and don't give up. You have to be strong now... HEATH: I won't forget you! i still don't believe that you're gone... We'll miss you!! No offense but the guy was a drug addict-just like Nicole Smith-many drug addicts die of overdoses..why dont we mourn all of them?

I'm sitting here reading all the wonderfulcomments expressed by the fans of Heath ledger, and crying lie a baby.I knew it wasn't just me who felt the sorrow of his death.but honestly.I just never imagined so many loved him.I wish this was just a bad dream and I will wake soon to find Heath is still alive..I know this is not nice to say,,but I hope all those who contributed to his demise feel ashamed of themselves..you took away our Heath! a son. a father, a brother a friend.

I have no words that could express how Heath's family and Michelle may feeling now. I have a little son and do not want to imagine the pain, the tragedy and all the struggle if... I lost my father at a young age and I know that hurts so much that words cannot describe. I am so sad about what happened even though I did not know him personally, he was a congenial person and a great actor... and more important - he seemed to be a loving father. He might have mingled with some wrong people, but honestly who is perfect? No need to point on that. Especially when you are famous - that must be such a pressure - we do not even know. My thoughts are with Michelle, Matilda and Heath's family. There will always be something missing in your lives and it will never ever be the same, but time will let you find a way living with the pain. These news were so shocking - I still cannot believe it. No more Heath Ledger? He was a great actor - in the middle of his life. Good-bye, Heath. We miss you!

The good the die young. I'm sure you are now one of those Angels Among Us now watching over your little girl Matilda. You will be dearly missed,Heath. My prayers are with your family and friends.
