Live-blogging the Golden Globes press conference on NBC

Jan 13, 2008, 09:12 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Film, Golden Globes, Television

Billybush_l Slezak: Dateline is done. According to NBC: Tonight is about Tough Guys Vs. True Love!
Annie: Is NBC implying its Globes coverage is "amazing" by playing "Amazing" in the background?
Slezak: Entertainment Weekly's DAVE KARGER! He looks so dapper, right down to his shoes!
Annie: Oh my god, how much do we love Dave Karger? And Dave Karger's spiffy tie?
Slezak: He may be the only source of glamour all night!
Slezak: Oh shoot! I kinda wanted Tilda Swinton to win for Best Supporting Actress in a Movie.
Slezak: Why is Billy Bush being allowed to comment on the winners? Where's Dave?
Annie: Oh God, are Billy and Nancy going to "comment" on every win?
Slezak: I am rooting for Ted Danson in Best Supperting Actor TV.
Slezak: Jeremy Piven? Fresh choice!
Annie: He can't accept his award 'til he shaves the head.
Slezak: This is all happening so quickly, and unexcitingly. Are you missing actors listing their agents, attorneys, and key grips in their acceptance speeches? I can't believe it, but I actually am!
Annie: I'm really not. I do miss watching everyone attempt to walk up to the podium in an outfit that doesn't allow for breathing.

Annie: Oh God, I really can't handle the thumping Access Hollywood music bringing us "back to the studio."
Annie: This is ridiculous!
Slezak: I'm not mad about Glenn Close... I was pretty addicted to Damages. Except for Rose Byrne.
Slezak: Nice track suit on Samantha Morton in that picture they just showed. Yeesh.
Slezak: The Biggest Loser ad was more emotionally compelling than this press conference.
Annie: Ah, aren't they always...
Annie: Seriously, this house music.
Slezak: And why is it Bush and O'Dell say everything in the same exact cadence?
Annie: I think they were programmed by the same toymaker.
Annie: Jon Hamm rules in Mad Men.
Slezak: It's kind of a bummer he doesn't get to give a speech, call more attention to the show.
Slezak: Did she just mispronounce Ratatouille?
Annie: Of course.
Slezak: Amy Adams was a-mah-zaing in Enchanted. Such a ridiculous premise, and I bought her every inch of the way. It seems like if Golden Globes wants to give out comedy awards, they ought to separate musicals, no? I mean, really, La Vie en Rose is a drama!
Annie: But most pundits would say Marion Cotillard had to win that.
Slezak: Shouldn't she be competing in a different category, though?
Slezak: Can they still have a Debbie Allen dance routine? Or would that be a no-no with the strike?
Annie: Dancers are not on strike! Ask my bedroom mirror.
Slezak: BAR-DEM!
Annie: HAV-EE-YAY!
Slezak: I am STILL scared of Bardem to this very second. He HAD to win that more than anyone else all night long.
Annie: Am I the only one who saw his character as almost comical at times?
Slezak: No, he was very funny at moments.
Annie: OMG DAVE KARGER!
Slezak: He should be the only one who's allowed to comment on winners, not Bush and O'Dell.
Annie: I don't know why he's not the only person allowed on-camera. I want to watch, like, a fireside chat with Dave Karger. He'd have cocoa.
Slezak: Guess what, Nancy O'Dell? I was not pulling for Debra Messing. Also, you do not disrespect The Queen. I mean, I know she does P'Zone voiceovers, but still...
Annie: YAY COMMERCIAL!
Slezak: Best Actor in a TV Comedy definitely should go to Alec Baldwin. That is all. If someone else wins, let's not acknowledge it.
Annie: Deal.
Annie: (Crickets.)
Slezak: When they say "Lee Pace," it sounds like "Felipe" to me. Also, could you hear the producers of Californication groan when Billy Bush said how cool he thought it was?
Annie: Ew, I hate how Billy/Nancy are already grinning widely as soon as they're "on" again.
Annie: STOP BEING ON.
Slezak: THEY ARE ALWAYS ON!
Slezak: I don't know who is in charge of deciding the difference between comedy and drama, but I think they need a tutorial, stat!
Annie: I forgot what a spot-on Seinfeld impression Tina Fey does... and it's funny that she has to be CRYING to do it.
Slezak: And she won! TEEE-NAH! TEEE-NAH! TEEE-NAH!
Annie: OMG DAVE KARGER is back on. And Dave Karger said "butt"!
Slezak: I know it's silly, but it makes me giddy to see him on TV when he works just down the hall from us!
Annie: He shared his Roisin Murphy album with us!
Slezak: Can we talk about how great the Roisin Murphy CD is? I know you and Dave loved her long before me, but it is FANTASTIC.
Annie: We already talk about this three minutes per day. Hey everyone (all three of you still here), watch this video!
Slezak: I did not like For Your Consideration except for the part where they did a great riff on Access Hollywood, and tonight really reminds me what a good job they did on that.
Annie: Oh, it was awesome. Jane Lynch and Fred Willard should have hosted this instead.
Slezak: YES! Jane Lynch rules!
Slezak: Johnny Depp may have been great in Sweeney Todd, but he did not "invent" his part, no matter what Billy Bush says.
Annie: Oh my God, he has NO CLUE what he's talking about, and the hand gestures make it worse!
Slezak: Did you know some other channels already announced ALL the winners like 20 minutes ago? NBC is just dragging it out.
Annie: We're so alone here.
Annie: Hold me, sweet potato soup, which is now freezing cold.
Slezak: (Maybe this blog item should be filed under "Things That Make Me Die Inside.")
Annie: Do it.
Slezak: You didn't finish eating?
Annie: I abandoned chip.
Annie: (Terra.)
Annie: (I'm so gross.)
Annie: I was dipping quattro-colored Terra chips into my S.P. soup.
Slezak: I am on my last drop of Sauvignon Blanc. Tragedy!
Annie: Make it last! Which is not what I'd suggest to BillyNancy.
Slezak: Exactly.
Annie: Yes, Mad Men again! Cigarettes and hard liquor for everyone!
Slezak: May I quote Billy Bush? "Great sleek sexy show. Early '60s. Madison Avenue. Though there's a lot of smoking going on in the movie." Literally. It is not a movie. It's  TV show.
Annie: You still have the sound on? I'm playing Roisin (thanks, Nick!) and watching this mess on mute.
Slezak: But Billy Bush is HIGH-larious. He just said, "[Julie Christie's character's] husband has to put her in this old folks' home. It's incredibly sad… but she somehow brings incredible grace and dignity to it." Which is something he's not doing with this telecast.
Annie: OMG DAVE KARGER ON DA PODIUM! Push them, Dave, push them!
Slezak: Atonement!
Annie: It's over. We're still alive.
Slezak: Barely. And I don't have any wine left.
Annie: I do, and I need some. Bye!
Slezak: And goodbye to you, PopWatchers! Thanks for hanging with us tonight! See you at the Oscars!

rose byrne is a excelent actriz

Lyn Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

Thanks for giving me Ms. Róisín Murphy. Billy Bush and Nancy O'Dell... Joel McHale and M. Slezak should get together for an insult-fest.

mawhi Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 07:57 PM EST

you guys are my HEROES for calling Billy Bush out for saying Depp "invented" the role of Sweeney Todd. That made me so mad! Overall, a hot mess! But this made it better.

'YAY A COMMERCIAL'- ditto!! I was watching Mean Girls on ABC Fam. The GG commercials were the best part.

Snarf Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Slezak picking on Billy Bush? LOVE IT

Dee Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

I agree, they could have picked numerous others besides Billy & Nancy. Every time it came to congratulating the winner, Nancy talked about who she wanted to win. Billy just stood there with no rebut/comment.

Dee Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

Regardless of the category, Marion Cotillard greatly deserved the globe for "Le Vie en Rose", and I love the other actresses. You have to see the film if only to see a wonderful performance. It was everything; drama, musical, etc.

Martha Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

Thanks, guys, for watching this so I didn't have to. Billy Bush is awful at the best of times, and this certainly didn't sound like the best of times. The "Sweeney/Eastern Promises" dance routine would definitely have improved the entire evening, though...

Valerie Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

Great blog, guys ! The show was excruciating, the only sane part of it was Dave Karger's. Thanks you Dave !!!

Anonymous Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

I only have one word when it comes to Billy Bush - LOSER!

Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

let's talk about our selection options: billy the bobble head and dairy dell....or ryan "no really they're low lights" seacrest....three "experts" of nothing. they should have just put dave kargeer in some tight pants and had a good ol fashioned EW roundtable and everytime team karger one they could play a clip from the roisin murphy video (thanks for the tip!)

Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

Only one word describes this year's Globes: Trainwreck

Heather Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

I couldn't bring myself to watch it. And the thought that the world missed acceptance speeches from Johnny Depp and Jon Hamm makes me want to cry.

Andie Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

I turned it off the second I heard Nancy O'Dell list Katherine Heigel's getting married as one of her career accomplishments for the year.

Shelly Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 12:08 PM EST

I had to turn Billy and Nancy off. What was with her outrage about Queen Latifah? The idea as host is to congratulate the winner and keep going. All that damn personal feeling commentary was too much. As much as Ryan Seacrest annoys me, I have to say, I turned it to E cnannel, the nominees and winners were read congratulated, very classy. They moved on, and it was done in half an hour. Billy and Nancy sucked!

LadyTiger Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

Thanks for the recap -- I couldn't take the actual broadcast. The cheap graphics and music, Billy "idiot" Bush and Nancy "plastic" Odell -- all of it was awful, really.

Tyler D Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

Billy Bush makes me want to give up on television.

Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

Michael and Annie should have done this lame show!! How friggin funny would that have been?! Great blog guys!

Sorella Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

Billy & Nancy are both so vanilla boring! And the mistakes they made, yikes! The most exciting part for me was seeing Dave Karger! It thrills me to no end to see EW people in person after being a EW subscriber for so long! He's a cutie, too bad he wasn't the host!

fredric Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

Dave Karger = hot.

Megan Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST

I totally was going to watch this, but 2 minutes of Billy Bush was all I could stand! Seriously, when GW leaves office, can he take his cousin with him?

fearsome penguin Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 09:34 AM EST

This should have been filed under "Things That Make Me Die Inside", because any time I have to see Billy Bush (who I KNOW is made of plastic!) I know my soul withers. I'm glad I didn't watch last night, but thanks for the blog!

Al Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

More importantly, the foreign press picks for winners were atrocious. Why the heck does everyone care so much what the foreign press thinks? Sweeeny over Juno? Pul-eze! Note that they picked mostly "foreign" and not USA people or shows. These awards should not be that important!

GeeMoney Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 08:46 AM EST

I hate Billy Bush, not to mention, his idiot of a cousin, President Bush. Ugh.

Elizabeth Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 07:16 AM EST

I watched enough of the NBC version to see Mr. Karger in all his spiffy-ness, then after reaffirming the uselessness of Billy Bush, I turned over to CNN. Note to Mary Hart: Go away, seriously, just go away. What strike-induced hell that was: Mary Hart or Billy Bush? Pass the hemlock! It was a good idea using all the entertainment talking heads, but lets be a little more selective next time, if we have to endure this again.

Seth Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 03:44 AM EST

Bill Bush is a tool.

Haley Pro WGA Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 01:28 AM EST

Earleir post

So horrified by tonights coverage that I missent my letter.
Simply restated
Dear AMPTP,
End it...let us have well written entainment and the Oscars.

Christina Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 01:20 AM EST

They announced the winners on other stations? I sat through that whole hour on NBC for nothing.

Dee Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 01:03 AM EST

It was a train wreck. This is just awful. Strike a deal both sides.

Haley Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 12:59 AM EST

Dear Billy and Nancy,

If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all...

Dear WGA,
Please give the strikers whatever they want (quickly)...if the "boutiqued" minds of tonights announcers are the best a National Network can muster ...writers must be worth their weight.

Nix Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 12:48 AM EST

Hmm, Billy is looking more and more like his cousin with the other job.

Nix Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 12:48 AM EST

CNN International covered the presscon without any commentary whatsoever. It was refreshing, though Mary Hart's jokes were sad.

LauHa Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 12:18 AM EST

It was incredibly bizarre to watch Billy & Nancy announce the winner and then insult them for winning. I'm dying inside without my annual GG cover of a popular pop tune about the red carpet. "Don't you dig the bling on the robes tonight? Don't you want to come to the Globes tonight? Don't cha? Don't CHA!" That is some quality pop culture homage!

Jennnn Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 12:10 AM EST

No wait. It gets better.

"At the end of the day it's a woman imitating a man." - Billy Bush of "Access Hollywood," expressing surprise after announcing that Cate Blanchett had won the supporting actress award in a motion picture for her portrayal of Bob Dylan in "I'm Not There."

I just read this on AT&T's site. How inappropriate (and ignorant) a comment for the GOLDEN GLOBES!? This wasn't (supposed to be) an EXTRA show, it was a Golden Globes. Ok, I'm throwing things at my tv again.

SHUT UP Billy!!! Your last name is BUSH for pete's sake. You *AND* your hair need to go see Ryan Seacrest's agent. Good God!

Tim Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 12:09 AM EST

That was one of the most embarrassing, G*d-awful things I've ever seen. Everything was atrocious, and the hosts (in particular Bush, whom I never want to see again abter reveleing himself to be a idiot with a sixth grade vocbulary), were even worse. WGA score = 1 billion; producers score = zero.

mumbles Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 11:51 PM EST

I swear I heard Nancy O'Dell refer to Daniel Day Lewis's other nomination in "The Gangs Out (sic) Of New York."

Rob Grizzly Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 11:44 PM EST

Depp winning for Sweeney Todd was kinda lame. All he did was stare out a window! ...and sing badly.

He's a great actor, but we can't get away with everything, folks. Next time, leave the musicals to people who can actually carry a tune

Rob Grizzly Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 11:40 PM EST

What a disaster!
This is the worst thing I've ever seen happen to the industry.

I used to think loosing the actors and all the fake hollywoodness would be a good thing- I. Was. Wrong.

Writers, I love ya, but you suck for this one. So do all the studios and networks too stubborn to come to an agreement with you.

maggie Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 11:25 PM EST

can ew.com please have a contest where the winner gets to drink wine and live blog on a award/reality/any kind of show with slezak and annie? i'd totally bring the wine. muscadet ok, guys?

Jessica Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 11:15 PM EST

How great would Tina Fey have been on stage?! Blergh. Billy Bush is a MORON and doesn't know the difference between tv and film. "Mad Men" is on a movie network, yes, but it is a TELEVISION SERIES. Stick to making Britney's life miserable, you dolt.

Jepp Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

For those of you who watched the E! coverage- how dumb is Giuliana Rancic? She looked so smug and actually held for laughter! What a wierd lady.

Jennifer Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

Extremely glad Depp finally won best actor and sweeney won best picture-comedy or musical. I was rooting for Ellen Page, but someone I have never heard of won.

Jasper Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

Actually I read the book Atonement and I didn't like it so I didn't want to see the movie though I'm a fan of the leads. Sad Juno didn't win anything. Marion Cotillard rules!! I wish Alec Baldwin would've won. Glad Depp won his first Globe finally. Roisin Murphy is kinda like Lisa Stansfield to me. I like her.

Matthew Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:11 PM EST

I do hate when they mix the musical categories for drama movies that are just movies about music (like 'Ray'), but Marion Cotillard would have no chance against Julie Christie and I really wanted to see her win so this time it's fine with me.

Jasper Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

I totally heart Dave Karger!!! He an Billy Bush seem to be wearing the same suit and tie but you can't tell right away because he's SO much cooler! Slezak and Annie RULE!!!

KR Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:06 PM EST

Did any of those people see Atonement? It blew goat balls. I loved the book. The movie felt like cliffs notes, it took out all the emotion and passion and beauty of the book.

Kristin Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:05 PM EST

Thank god this wasn't 3 hours. The winners were terrible

hi Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:03 PM EST

Worth repeating: "Hold me, sweet potato soup"

jcarla Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

I'm sure the Oscar producers were calling WGA at the half-hour mark begging for a deal. This was so awful.

Justin Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:59 PM EST

So, Atonement is this year's Babel. It will win score and nothing else.

Roman Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:59 PM EST

Word.

Silv Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

Please, God, don't put us through something like this for the Oscars.

Justin Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

DDL. Sweet.

west Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

Yeah, Baldwin isn't my fav person, but he's a great actor. At least Fey won.

Nick Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:56 PM EST

Annie and Slezak you should have done a video feed, which would have been hilarious I am sure, with all the wine and chips!

Roman Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST

Huh. Surprises abounding tonight at the non-Globes. I'm a little miffed that Juno didn't win Best Picture for Mus./Com. and I'm extremely surprised by the Best Picture-Drama winner.

Nick Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST

Jane Lynch does rule!

Anonymous Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

Even worse on CNN. Larry King was "hosting" and I think he forgot his mic was on and he would make comments over the announcements. Most hilarious -- when he said "I don't understand why Daniel Day-Lewis wasn't nominated and didn't win" during the Best Actor -- Comedy award. And then you hear his producer telling him he is but in the Drama category, all while the announcements are going on at the same time.

Maggs Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

Ok I cant take much more of this. I put the TV on mute and I'm pretending you guys are the actual commentators. Are Billy Bush and Nancy O'Dell human? What is with Billy's hair? It's so poofy in the back.

RobC Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

Glamor shot! Dave Karger is hot!

Nick Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

But Annie, what about this preview of the new single from Roisin - her outfits are spectacular!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGgQWiDStyc

David Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:46 PM EST

Since E! has already finished the press conference and announced all the winners. Any of you watching the NBC coverage willing to bet 1,000,000 dollars that Attonement wins?

Justin Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:46 PM EST

(Obligatory Johnny B. Goode pun)

Nick Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:45 PM EST

WOW! A Roisin Murphy mention! You don't get that on the live broadcast! Nice.

Justin Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:44 PM EST

Surprises all around. Weird.

Except for Bardem. Rockin it.

Nick Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:43 PM EST

YAY! for Tina Fey! Nice.

Roman Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

And the Midwest! BTW, more thanks to Annie and Slezak for blogging this. It's seriously awful.

tia Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

watched this on tv guide channel and the entertainment announcers were terrible. I'm glad I didn't have to sit through Billy Bush though.

SH Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:40 PM EST

I can't believe I'm typing this, but I miss all of that hoopla and nonsense. Most of all, I'm sad for Tina Fey. I would have loved to see her accept her award.

Nick Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:38 PM EST

Billy/Nancy - I am glad I am not watching them right now, they make me cringe!

pitchmeister Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:38 PM EST

why are you bothering with the NBC telecast - it was over and done in a half hour on E!

Nick Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

YAY! Others! Welcome East Coast!

Nick Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

Thanks Annie and Slezak, I am sure your coverage is better than watching the show. HA.

jcarla Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

There are people on the East Coast reading the blog too.

Nick Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

Oh neat, I am the only geek on the West Coast reading the live blog. Fun.

Nick Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

La Vie En Rose is a drama, I agree, she deserves the award. How funny it's in musical.
