'Cashmere Mafia': Misses' Right or Misses' Good Enough for Right Now?

Mirandaotto_l "Writers' Strike, look what you've done to me!" [Sung to "Girl, Look What You've Done to Me" by ex-Monkee Davy Jones. Trust me, it'll work if you squeeze three syllables — "Writers' Strike" — into one. Just did a search on that cute old lad and came across his official website, which didn't help me confirm the song's title — my quick look-see yielded no song listing at all — but his Davy's Diva of the Month archive is fascinating. He's pasted his face on photos with lots of Hollywood's hottest. My favorite is his ever-youthful mug plastered over one of Madonna's young babes in arms! Check it out for yourself at davyjones.net, and then, in the words of Keira Knightley in Atonement, "Come back to me!"]

Okay, as I was saying, the lack of much original programming has me desperately wanting to fall in love with Cashmere Mafia, but it's been three dates now, and I'm still not sure if this is going to work out. I'm trying to focus on the good parts: An anonymous blogger calling Caitlin's girl-toy "Hot Chocolate"; Zoe branding her sexy and ambitious young assistant, who hooks up with the boss and then threatens a lawsuit, "Business Barbie"; Juliet (Miranda Otto, pictured) coming to the realization that her revenge sex with bland Bobby Walsh would be a "wonderful fantasy, but I have to deal with my reality"; and Caitlin's very real and prominent zit (how refreshing for such a glamorous show). Unfortunately, I can't help being irked by that still annoyingly quirky and downright distracting music; publisher Mia tramping over the verboten barrier between publishing and editorial (which Journalism 101 says is a no-no); the incessant lunches (really, do these women of import and power have time enough to dine together more than once a week?); and how unnecessarily cold they make Juliet (and what was with that poo-awful brown outfit she wore to meet Cilla?).

But then, the evening ends with a flourish of promise in the form of Mia's poignant publisher's letter in which she confronts ex-fiancé Jack about his fears of the modern woman (specifically, Mia herself). Is Jack coming back? (Yes, according to IMDB.) I wondered if Tom Everett Scott was too big of an actor for one episode (and by "big," I mean he's got a recognition factor, similar to how if an actor who you're pretty familiar with shows up early on in a Law & Order episode, you know he's or she's the killer). And I like that I'm starting to sense some follow-through in this show. I still don't care much about Caitlin and Hot Chocolate (where's the heat?), but I am interested, in spite of myself, to see what happens with Mia and Jack. Is this the start of a beautiful relationship? Did the ending last night leave you wanting more? Do you think Jack and Mia might end up working things out? How do you feel about choosing "reality" over "fantasy" (as in Juliet's case, or the prospect that this show may be far from ideal but good enough for now)?

Does anyone notice the makeup on Caitlin? OMG, she looks SO BAD and I don't mean the zit/concealer! I mean everything else--it looks like Jessica Simpson's makeup "artist" in Blonde Ambition got a hold of her... and she's the cosmetics exec. Ridiculous. And I have to fast-forward through all of Lucy Liu's scenes--they are so boring. All of the workplace ones, actually, like with Zoe. At least back when Lynette and Tom on DH still worked in an office, they could make it watchable, but I usually don't like watching people work. ON SATC we knew what they did but it was more of their personal lives we focused on in scenes. Juliet looks so WEIRD. Like she's always looking at the ground--or down her nose, which could be appropriate, but still. I think both her guys are so DULL. Zoe and her hubby are cute but boring. This show sucks but it's all that's on! That Gucci bag last week has been the most interesting thing onscreen so far.

I have to agree Erin. I'm not feeling it. I wasn't feeling it after the first episode, or the second, or the third. Three strikes, it's out. I realize there isn't a lot of good tv on out there, so I'm going to start reading more!!

I really, really want to love it, but I can't. Mia angsting all over Cover Dude, who WORKS FOR HER - like, in what world would that happen? I hate that in every episode, there's an Evil Woman (although, OK, Business Barbie was fantastic) - it's just standard "women are b*tches and can't be trusted" tarted up in something that's made to look vaguely empowering for women. Loved seeing Juliet laughing (oh, look! She's not a robot!), liked the zit and that's about it. The rest made me wanna barf. And worse - bored me. I gave it 3 shows and now I'm gone.

I don't think people will need to choose between this and Lipstick Jungle. The ratings are drying up for this show. Aren't there any eps left of Dirty Sexy Money?

I am a huge fan of the Caitlin storyline...It is definitely a breath of fresh air and something new for network television...I just wish they would expand on it more...It seems like it hasnt progressed at all...every show it has been caitlin saying "i don't know if im gay...blah blah blah" then they kiss and thats it...we need more of a foundation in the relationship...They are going to have to bring up the whole sleeping together thing soon or it will not be realistic for a woman of Caitlin's age because they have now been on three dates...so hopefully that will help expand this story...

GingerCat I was thinking the exact same thing about the punctuation in the title! Right now this show is still just girl watching to me- I don't feel vested. It's like going on a date because I'm bored and want a free meal.

I'm gonna stick with CM for a while longer...it does seem, to me, to be getting better.
And the Caitlin storyline is my fave.

I don't get the hate for this show. Granted, it's not Shakespeare but I think it's miles ahead of "The Starter Wife" which got some really good reviews and in my opinion was horribly written, as well as completely ubelieveable and unrelateable. The only things this show has in common with SATC is: 4 Women, New York, Great Clothes. It's really about Women in high positions in the workplace and how it affects everything else. Again, it's not fantastic, but it's certainly decent. I also think the relationship with Caitlin and Alicia is refreshing and the way they are handling it seems realistic. Caitlin is atratced to Alicia and it's something new so she's just trying to figure this out.

The best part of the show for me was definitely Christine Ebersole, which says a lot about how compelling the main characters are (not so much). The show needs to be funny!!! Otherwise, it's just boring.

The weird thing about this show is that while all the girls are supposed to be high powered business women, I can only figure out what Lucy Lui and the blonde one do - magazine publisher, and cosmetic company exec. What is it that the others do? If their jobs are so important (i.e. ignoring kids and cute husbands) then how come I don't know what they do. I love Lucy Liu's character, the others are just meh. I will watch, but only b/c I miss DSM and need my shot of NYC fabulousness!

DalGal Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 10:35 AM EST

I totally feel like I am cheating on SATC with this show but there is nothing else on! I don't like any "reality" shows and all my other favorites are on hiatus with the strike. So what is a girl to do? I am warming up a bit more to the characters but I am wanting more backgrounds/history for them. The Caitlin storyline needs to be dropped now. It is so lame! And if she doesn't want people to think she is gay, why does she continue to make out on the streets with her girl-toy? But my favorite line last night was Juliet telling Davis they were even and the look on his face.

It's a fun winter fling. I'm not getting too attached, since there's only four or so episodes left. But there's nothing else on, it's entertaining, and works with my schedule. After eleven hours of class, Mafia is a great way to unwind.

Sorry, I have to ask, why are there apostophes after "Misses" in the headline? The plural of "Miss" is "Misses"--no apostrophe needed.

NineDaves Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

i fully agree erin! it's been three dates, and i'm just not feeling it. but i suppose i'm not dating anyone else really right now, so i might as well just keep going out with her and hope that some chemistry starts up soon. i will have to break up with her, however, if she keeps stealing from gossip girl. anonymous blogger outing the dirty laundry of the social elite? come on! blair and serena have totally been there, done that!
