A different kind of 'Nightmare on Elm Street'

Nightmareonelmst_l According to Variety, New Line is rebooting the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, à la the recent reboots of Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (and the upcoming reboot of Friday the 13th), but this new Nightmare is apparently going to star someone other than Robert Englund as Freddy. A reboot seems like a bad enough idea (or at least a superfluous one), but no Englund? C'mon, he made that series. He's not like the less-than-verbal slashers in the other franchises. You can't just put any lunk behind the burn scars and clawed glove. Sure, New Line can cast someone younger who can make Nightmare movies for years to come, but for most of us, when we see Freddy Krueger, we'll close our eyes and think of Englund.

Who's going to start the "Keep Robert Englund" petition? Who can think of an actor who would do a better job? And who wishes the studio would just leave well enough alone?

IvyAlice Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

There is only one real Freddy K. and it's robert englund. He's so fun in the character. the other actor they want look too serious to be a good freddy.

I am so over joyed that they have decided to make another elm street movie, I mean i grew up with freddy from the time I was about two.. But when I heard that they were gonna replace him, I got a little upset i mean Robert Englund was Freddy and he will always be freddy. And I am sure that the movie companies and directors are wanting to appeal to the younger generation who dosnt understand the velocity behind what robert englund did to that character.. All i know is that if they do replace him, they will not be making much of a profit when the movie finally hits theaters...

Who can replace robert englund and still retain the same allure? ME!

They better not try to make another Freddy movie without Englund. That would just piss me off. I don't think any of the NOES movies need to be remade.

Nancy Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

It won't do any good to start a petition. I've heard on imdb.com that angry fans have written to CBS demanding they air the show, "Real Nightmares", but it didn't work. The shows they have on there are so stupid, like that Jericho thing; guess they listened THAT time, huh?

I remember a few years back when POTO fans were trying to get a petition out to keep Michael Crawford on as The Phantom, but that didn't work either. I wasn't disappointed in their choice, though! Yum! Yum! I just hope they can get someone as charming as "Bob" if he doesn't do it.

If "Bob"'s not in it, I'm not watching! Some remakes of movies are really good, like *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory*, but for someone else to play "Freddy" is downright STUPID!

I wonder: Could Bob's doctor have something to do with it? A few years back, I read somewhere that he'd had a mild heart attack. Please tell me that I just had a bad dream. Stay well, "Fred". Love ya!

yep cant wait to the new movie comes out i just love all the Freddy moves ......

Lesley Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

The thought of someone other than Robert Englund playing Freddy is just sacrilige. I can't even imagine anyone who could even come anywhere close to filling his shoes. He IS Freddy.

I love the Elm Street series, so I would probably go see it. But, without Robert, it would be sorely missing that it factor.

lance Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

I thought of BEN FOSTER too. A great choice!

Liz Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

I agree with Darma boy that Ben Foster IS a great choice!

Michael Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

Re-casting Freddy is a lame idea...but not impossible.
How about Michael Emerson from "Lost"?

Brian Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

As long as there are teens dumb enough to buy tickets to these terrible re-makes and sequels, the idiot numbers-crunchers who run the studios will continue to churn them out.

fredric Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

All this talk over Robert Englund? What about Heather Langencamp? It's like replacing Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween. Oh wait, they already did that. Never mind.

chris Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 09:30 AM EST

Heather is so right! we need new and fresh ideas for the horror genre..J-horror made for america is horrible, and the remakes just aren't the same.."hatchet" was fun and original, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves horror!

Chris G Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 08:11 AM EST

Bea Arthur should play Freddy! She's already got the voie down...

Cliff Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 12:06 AM EST

How appropriate that this article appears right above an ad for The Invasion. Let's leave well enough alone, mmkay?

ja$04n Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 11:55 PM EST

Hey, everybody! I just came back from the future and, guess what? The movie sucked. Prepare now to not go see it.

Jessica Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

Does anyone remember that the reason "Nightmare" was so popular was due to the fact that it was an incredibly fresh and intelligent take on the genre? That all these horror classics are such because of the uniqueness of the product? Shouldn't that mean that people who truly appreciate great horror(and there is plenty out there just waiting to be discovered) should make the next great, original, TERRIFYING horror movie? Enough of the "re-imaginings"-that's just a lack of creativity. Where are the young upstarts a la Carpenter and Craven for this generation? Even those with massive potential(Eli Roth springs to mind) are rarely given the opportunity to shine. What was once a revolutionary genre(hello, Halloween!) is now a wasteland of depravity. Here's hoping the entire project is scrapped::crosses fingers::

sdk Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

they need to suck it up and do Freddy v. Jason v. Ash. the comic is great fun.

Ep Sato Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

After seeing "Over her Dead Body" (a crappy Eva Longoria remake of a movie from the 1950's that wasn't very good either), I'm more disgusted by remakes than by all those crappy reality shows the networks are hawking on us rather than paying the writers.

Sorry to digress. The rebirth of these series has been super lame. The rehashed Texas Chainsaw movie was pathetic, the remade Hills Have eyes were just really gross, the remade House of Wax had Paris Hilton, the remade Halloween was so bad people told me it was "leave the theater halfway through the movie" worthy. Aliens got put together with the Predator, and the results were stinkier than the pits of Gargarus 7 in mid summer (that's an old Marvel UK joke and if you don't get it too bad).

Please Horror movie makers, your genre was once the shining star of independent cinema (Night of the Living Dead, Evil Dead, the original Halloween). Please come back to your roots and bring some much needed creativity to the cinema!

Movie Buff Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

This is a bad idea. I have no desire to see another remake of a classic film.If people would stop supporting this films, then the studios would be forced to produce new material .

paige Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

ben foster sounds like a good idea but if he was smart he would not take it. this would not be a very smart career movie considering i dont think anyone will care to see this movie with or especially without robert englund. we shouldve all known they were gonna remake this sooner or later cause people forked over their paychecks to see the other stupid remakes... i guess we will all wait and see when the trailer arrives. but now whats next? is there any other horror franchise that is "dying to be remade"? child's play comes to mind... how bout the howling?

Stephanie T. Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

You see it's possible to change Jason being that about four different actors had portrayed him but Robert Englund not as Freddy would be like Elizabeth Berkley admitting that she cannot act. It would be impossible. And I second that old horror movies should not be re-made, especially bad ones like "He Knows You're Alone" (1980).

HOW ABOUT.... Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 04:21 PM EST

...they STOP re-making the only few classics in a generally crap genre (that i happen to love although it lets me down again and again), and try to come up with A GOOD NEW IDEA FOR A HORROR MOVIE? For the love of god, please.

Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

Well, let's see, the Texas Chainsaw remake sucked, the Halloween remake sucked even more, not a good track record. Oh, and the only thing worse than Rob Zombie's movies is his music.

Strepsi Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

I agree with Phil, the first poster, that the most interesting part of the first couple movies was the terrifying prospect of trying NOT TO SLEEP. If they can re-gain that, and make Freddy scary again, good. I would love to see Englund retain the part, but Snarf's idea of Ben Foster is GENIUS. He was really nasty and funny in 3:10 to Yuma. Team Ben Foster.

Heather Wixson Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

The Hatchet comment was in reference to doing original horror and STOP remaking the originals which still hold over..."Hellraiser," "Friday the 13th," and "Halloween" are just a few that come to mind...UGH!

Larry Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Leave Britney Aloooooone!

Ahem, I mean Leave Freddy Alone!!!!!!!

Heather Wixson Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

THANK YOU!!
I have been B**ching about this all day (I write for a horror site so you can understand why this bugs me). Freddy Krueger is probably the most iconic villain of all horror (yes, there's the old Dracula/Wolfman/Mummy guys but new audiences always find that Freddy resonates with them) and to not have Robert involved is a travesty. I met Robert at a convention this summer and he said they were looking at a prequel/reboot and most likely he couldn't star because of his age (let's think how silly Anthony Hopkins looked in Red Dragon, trying to be younger). I also don't like the idea of a prequel because it's hard to root for a character who's not supernatural and preys on little children (like Freddy originally did before he got burned). Who wants to root for that guy? Give me the crazy dream-based one-liner delivering guy who shoves teens into TVs or squishes them in a roach motel.
I am so PO'd about this whole situation. Why can't there be more movies like Hatchet?

jaime Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

For some reason the first person that came to mind was freddie prince jr. . .where has he been????

Random thought i know. . .cus he wouldnt be good. . .but i dont know who would.

Darma Boy Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

Ben Foster IS a great choice! Come to think of it, there are plenty of good actors that could take the Elm Street series from campy fun to really twisted and fresh. (Look at Heath Ledger's Joker). I'm optomistic

Rob Grizzly Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

Leave well enough alone? How long have you been working in this industry, Gary?

Snarf Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

If they are going to do go ahead and do this (and the original was quite scary) I'd suggest Ben Foster as Freddy Krueger.

BHM1304 Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

Robert Englund has all of two recognizable roles on his resume (Freddy Kreuger and Willy on the sci-fi mini-series "V"). If they re-boot this franchise and fail to give the role of Freddy Kreuger to him - no one will go see it.

Englund gave this character his sarcasm and wit and should not be recast. EVER.

Phil Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

WITHOUT Robert, sorry typo!

Phil Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

Gary I completely AGREE with you whole-heartedly. Though I tend to enjoy Michael Bay's rock-em-sock-em productions, THIS franchsise is not like resurrecting Firday the 13th or Texas Chainsaw in that the slasher is both vocal & not hidden behind a hockey mask or a mask of mutilated flesh! Part of what made Freddy so successful for New Line was that Freddy not only tortured the kids in their dreams, but shot witty & sarcastic jabs at the teens as certain as they would shack up & screw each other at some point during the movie! IF they do resurrect the Nightmare series though, I would HOPE the re-boot would involve the kids experimenting with not just sleeping pills, but dr#@s to keep from falling asleep, since they are more widely available today than when Freddy 1st started torturing teens afraid to fall asleep back in the early 80's. If you're going to update the series don't just TRY and replace the maniacal boogeyman. But like I said a Nightmare with Robert is kinda just a bad dream!
