Bryan Cranston, 'Breaking' free from 'Malcolm'

Breakingbad_l Just a friendly reminder that AMC's new series Breaking Bad, created by X-Files veteran Vince Gilligan and starring Malcolm in the Middle's Bryan Cranston, is debuting this Sunday night at 10 p.m. (Check out Ken Tucker's review here.) As a big Malcolm fan, I thought Cranston was pretty much perfect as high-strung Hal, and a big factor in wry Jane Kazmareck's Emmy-nominated success as his wife Lois. You may recall that he snuck into Little Miss Sunshine in a small but pivotal role as the source of Greg Kinnear's angst, Stan Grossman. Cranston's certainly busting out of the comedy mold with Bad, a gritty tale of a terminally ill chemistry teacher-turned-meth dealer-on-the-run, and I'm all hopped up to watch him rock the role. (I mean, he's already played the darkest character there is — Lucifer himself — in 2006's Fallen on ABC Family.) Maybe it's the tighty-whiteys Cranston sports so un-self-consciously in Bad, or maybe it's his auburn moustache (which reminds me, might Seth Green be angling to play his little brother?), but from the minute I saw Cranston in ads for Bad, I've been pulling for the show to match the success of AMC's other original show, Mad Men (new Golden Globe winner for best drama series). Think he can pull it off? Watch and report back!

Really loved the first episode of Breaking Bad! Very interesting and original...I love Bryan Cranston as the father in Malcolm in the Middle, and he does a fantastic job as a lead in Breaking Bad!
If you missed the premiere on Sunday, I saw that AMC will be reairing the Breaking Bad pilot tonight @10PM/9C Definitely worth checking out!

The show was great on Sunday and I really think it is only going to get better. It's great getting to see Bryan Cranston in a serious role, breaking away from the Malcom in the Middle character. My friend pointed me to a viral site where he delivers messages that you can customize for your friends. It's pretty cool! Check it out (www.waltswisdom.com)!

I LOVE MADMEN. i will totally watch this. i have only seen malcom in the middle in reruns. i don't know why it never appealed to me when it was regularly on. that whole family is hilarious, i wish each of them their very own hit show

I love Bryan Cranston. I saw him on that show with David Alan Grier - the sketch comedy/improvision show. For the life of me I can't remember the name. But he did a sketch where he was an Ozzy Osborne type British rocker and I laughed so hard I cried. Thanks for the reminder. I'm putting this on the tivo.

Thanks for the catch, Jack. It's fixed!

Cranston's been one of those "Hey, it's that guy!" actors for me for a good 20 years now. He had amazing cameos on some great tv shows in the 1980s-90s. Who could forget Tim Whatley, the Dentist who became Jewish for the jokes? The re-gifter had a reception room with Adult magazines. I loved him in that role! He was also great as the loser neighbor on "King of Queens".

My point's that Cranston's one of those great actors that no one ever noticed until now. And I'm glad he's finally getting some recognition.

Speaking of recognition, AMC used to be the land of poorly dubbed (and worse edited) R rated 80s movies (and not even good ones. I saw that the channel aired Stallone's COBRA on that channel several times in a single day).

Thanks to Madmen, and (hopefully) this new show, AMC will start to take original programming to a new direction. A classic move indeed.

Sorry, she was nominated seven times -- for every season _Malcolm_ was on air.

GREAT call on Cranston's work helping Kaczmarek out in "Malcolm" big time. He was terrific on that show.

Sorry to nitpick, but Jane Kazmareck never won an Emmy for _Malcolm in the Middle_. She was, however, nominated six times.
