Remembering Brad Renfro

Jan 16, 2008, 11:01 AM | by Gary Susman

Bradrenfrodiesat25_l I hope what's not lost in the speculation over Brad Renfro's untimely death at 25 — especially given the likelihood that he'll become just another cautionary tale of a child star who destroyed himself with drugs as he entered adulthood — is an acknowledgment that he was a really good actor with a solid body of work. Aside from his self-assured debut in 1994's The Client and his first mature teen performance in Apt Pupil (1998), very few of those roles were for studio pictures; most were more challenging indie fare, like Telling Lies in America and Ghost World. In retrospect, it's easy to draw a link between the troubled youths and delinquents he often played (Tom and Huck, Sleepers, Apt Pupil, Bully) and his own life, but his performances in these films indicated a young actor who, maybe only on-screen, displayed a wisdom, sensitivity, and maturity beyond his years. He recently wrapped filming on The Informers, a drama in which he acts alongside Winona Ryder, Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, and Mickey Rourke, and I'm sure we'll see him hold his own alongside such established pros, just as he did opposite Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Bacon, and Ian McKellen.

I met Renfro when he was 11 years old and promoting The Client. He seemed to me then to be an unusually bright and self-possessed kid. He seemed fully aware of the opportunity that had been handed to him (by the casting agents who discovered him in Knoxville, Tenn.) and the career path it could lead to, but insisted that he was going to remain level-headed and himself, that folks at home would keep him humble and honest. Alas, that boast, made with youthful bravado, did not come to pass, but I didn't see any reason at the time to doubt that he would go on to have a long and productive future in movies. I'm reluctant to draw any pat lessons here, except to say that we never really know the stars we think we know, and to regret the terrible waste of a life, as well as a career full of past accomplishment and future promise.

Who the hell was Brad Renfro? I googled him, and I don't see any big movies he's been in.

Frances Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 03:56 AM EST

I discovered Brad at 13 in The Client, and by the very first moment his charisma and talent hit me. He's been the only one actor I was interested in all of these years. I met him once in 2001 at a festival, he's been really nice. I loved his movies so much that watching them I started loving cinema. As a person who lived familiar troubles, I kinda understood his ones. I am really shocked, I would have loved to keep on following his work and to see him balanced and happy. Thank you Brad for your movies. God Bless You.

Update - I typed that previous post in haste and made a couple of errors -I meant to say that the 'memorial tribute' montages show names and faces of people in the film industry only, not the whole entertainment industry.
Secondly, the montages feature people who died in the time period between the Oscar ceremony of the previous year and the Oscars of the current one, not just people who died the previous year. They mentioned Heath Ledger, who died this year, but not Brad Renfro. RIP Brad

J. Sun, Feb 24, 2008 at 11:56 PM EST

I just watched the 'memorial tribute' segment of the Oscars tonight, where they show a montage of people in the entertainment industry who passed away during the previous year. I am glad that there are places on the net that remember what a talented actor Brad was, because the academy sure didn't. In these 'tribute' montages they mention many names of those in the entertainment industry who are gone, from the most obscure to the better known ones. Because of this, it irritates me that there was no mention of Brad in the tribute this year - I guess the academy figured because of the way he died, he just wasn't worth mentioning, even after he's six feet under. Hollywood truly does chew people up and spit them out. Don't misunderstand me - I don't think Hollywood was solely to blame for his death, and I realize that ultimately he made his own choices for better or worse. He also didn't need a mention by the academy to validate his talent, but it's still inexcusable.

Yes it is tragic to see a life taken so soon. But who are we to say it was not a life lived fully? This sensitive, brilliant young man left a legacy in his body of work and accomplished more than many do in four times the years on the planet. His gift lives on and on...and his son has proof of his father's life force on film. God Speed and God Bless.

Just wanted to say how sad it made me to learn Brad passed away. I just found it out today, it makes me so damn angry noone said anything about it here in Bulgaria. He was such a beautiful, sincere, talented boy, my favorite actor, ever since The Client. I just saw The Cure two days ago, and now I learn he's dead! It broke my heart.
Rest in peace, Brad!

As much as it was a shame both Brad and Heath Passing, I must say I prefered Brad to Heath!

It is quite disheartening to read so many negative comments from people toward Brad.Sure,he had personal struggles with his drug problems.
Instead of concentrating on the negative, however, why not remember this talented young actor for the impressive body of work that he presented to us?
Brad was among the most powerful young actors seen on film.He possessed a unique style of his own.No matter what role he played,he always put every ounce of his heart and soul into it...his talent was undeniable...I will miss him forever...

Remember Me
Remember me with smiles and laughter
For that is how I will remember you all.

Wow this is crazy and I still can't believe... I've been in love with Brad ever since the client and found out of his death the day heath died so even though i'm not the biggest heath fan it was a sad sad day. It's a shame when youth dies by their own hand. Who chooses who goes and who stays... Brad was so super talented and I think for all his fans their hearts will ache everytime they see one of his movies and what could of been. Maybe now hes not dealing with his demons.... Brad you will be very missed... RIP.

Jella Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 01:00 AM EST

I remember Brad from the Client, and saw just about all his movies. He was brilliant in the Client, for being so young, again in The Cure, which didn't get a whole lot of publicity for some reason, and in Telling Lies in America. Act Pupil, Bully's was another amazing performance... I guess I could go on and on.

What a waste, and I have to agree his death hit me like River Phoenix's. While he had a long history of drug abuse, I wish the parental figures in his life could have got him the help he needed much sooner. The longer it goes on, the closer to death you become. Especially with the kinds of drugs he chose.

I think the reason his death may not have been as newsworthy as Heath Ledger was because the only news we did hear about him for the last 5 years or so was concerning his troubles with drugs and the law.

RIP young man, and I own the Client, and The Cure and watch them frequently. I will always remember you as a fine, bright young actor that left us too soon.

Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

Those beautiful, shy eyes, that playful smile, that dash of freckles and that sexy, sexy Southern drawl, thank God we had him with us as long as we did! Though we lost him so young, he left us 26 wonderful films with which to cherish his unmatched talent. I will ALWAYS love Brad Renfro and be thankful for his contribution to the acting and music worlds.

Dexter Graves Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 05:52 AM EST

It's easy to overlook how tragic this is. In the wake of Heath Ledger's death, that seems to be what is happening. This has been a horrible, horrible week for film fans. Losing one actor of such gifts is terrible, losing two is beyond words to describe...

hmc199 Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

brad was a wonderful actor...its really frustrating that the media is all over another talented actor's death-Heath Ledger...Brad seems to have been swept under the carpet, he may have had issues in his personal life and was trying to overcome them, but he was very talented none the less and this is one fan who will miss him and probably cry watching his movies-Sleepers was my favorite

bluefox Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 12:55 AM EST

I had no idea at all that Brad Renfro had died, what a shock on top of Heath Ledger this is appalling!! How can this happen to such young beautiful people???? They had the world at their feet and jst overnight they are gone. How very very sad!!

nyaki Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

i never knew he's death. i was reading the death of HEath Ledger when i read his name (Brad) as one of the young actors who passed aay. i was really into deep shock! rest in peace!

Brad... and now also Heath.
What is the world coming to?
Well.. they do say that only the good die young. :)
My heart goes out to all who knew him on a close capacity as I feel saddened by his untimely death, I can't even imagine what those close feel.
RIP BRAD RENFRO 1982-2008
Awesome actor.

I am in shock still as well. I have been a fan since "The Client". I have seen almost all of his films and he was an incredible actor. When I overlooked 10th and Wolf, I had just heard the news about his death and was channel surfing and without even knowing stopped on that movie and he was in it. He had amazing talent and it is just so sad. Too many young talents are dying off it sems but as history shows us, this evil with drugs has been going on forever. When will we ever see an end?

His death hit me hard. I used to be in love with him when I was a teen. I was convinced we were soulmates because we were born on the same EXACT day. I actually found a box of old magazine clippings with him last week. He's the reason why I'm a web designer, my first website was dedicated to him. So it makes me sad to see a young life wasted. RIP BRAD.

I was shocked, I know every fan was, when I just heard it from ET yesterday and I thought i just misheard it and now i saw it over the Internet and I was really sad like he was my child idol...I'm from the Philippines and i dreamt of meeting him someday... now it can only be realized..in heaven.

I am in shock. In September, 6th 2007 my ex boyfriend died at 24. Two days later, my father-in-law died at 52. and now, my favourite actor just died too. It is so sad... i just can't believe it.

Lee Jones Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

Being 3 days older than Brad, this hit really close to me. I have followed his career since he first appeared in The Client. It's so sad when someone is really trying to make their life better, and something like this happens. He was an amazingly talented actor who will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and fans. May you rest in piece Brad.

Rest in peace, Brad. You will be missed. I just watched "Apt Pupil" the other day. What an incredible talent with what should have been a long future in film. You could have grown old together with an entire generation of endearing fans.

Do you know that he had a tattoo done that said f*uck, ya yall? done on Sunday and he died tuesday hope it wasn't blood poisoning

Arion Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

The New York Times article about Brad Renfro wasn't as helpful as I wanted it to be. I'm not a morbid seeker of gory details, but I guess when someone dies so young I need more information to understand why. Brad Renfro was a very good actor, I'm going to miss him .

Nell Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 03:37 AM EST

This news made me tear up as well. I immediately told my girlfriend and she said "Brad who?", which made me feel even worse... I followed his career as well, to be so young (I am just a bit older than he was as well) and to be so REAL onscreen..

I was sad to see that his death seemed only worthy of an end-note on most entertainment reports. I was glad to read the Popwatch, and everyone's comments, to know that he touched others as he did me..

Thanks EW..

Hollywood does only care about money but Im not sure everywhere else is so much better When you are known and a sucess in this town you can make alot of interesting friends but they really arnt Sadly he was raised by his grandmother and probably did feel sort of alone .

rick Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

I loved this guy's movies, especially Bully and 10th and Wolf. He was not the cookie-cutter young actor who was a sell out. Someone should have tried to save him from himself. Maybe someone did but all Hollywood is interested in is money. When he goes, there are plenty more to take his place. Brad's acting touched me!!

Shelley Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

I am still in shock. I am just a few months older than Brad, and I followed his career closely. I remember in Junior High that while other girls had crushes on really big named actors, my crush was on him. He was an excellent actor, and I will truly miss him. God bless his family who are suffering right now.

Michelle Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 07:17 AM EST

Does anyone know when the results of the autopsy will be let out? I'm hoping against hope that it wasn't drugs.

I'm still shocked, even though I didn't know him personally but I remember his movies , I still became very sad and depressed by the news, R.I.P Brad

I have seen every movie Brad ever did because he was a truly fascinating talent. He was beautiful and brooding....he had a sweetness and dark mischief that made him unique. One of his co-stars from Bully (who is a personal friend) once told me his wrecklessnes was the most scary and seductive thing about him. Goodnight James Dean, River Phoenix, and now our most recent young Dionysus, Brad.

Carmen Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 12:40 AM EST

Nabody "chooses a path of self-destruction"!Addiction is a disease of the brain. It is an epidemic among this young mans peers and addicts are dropping like flies due to greedy drug dealers and the poisen they add to the dope to make thier evil profits. This country needs to wake up and deal with the facts that the 12 Steps is not a cure all and much more research is needed for treatment of this disease. I know my only son is dead at 22 years old who was just as bright, handsome and promising as this young man from the same fate and nobody in the justice system cared to even prosecute the killer who sold him the death weapon. Just another junkie out of the way....

Marie Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 11:46 PM EST

Oh what a waste. This morning, my dad said do you know an actor named Brad renfro and I said sure, I like him, why and then he said he died and I was shocked. Not sure why, I knew he had had problems, serious ones with drugs for a long time, but I always hoped so very hard he would get himself together and get through it. I thought he had the last few months, that he had saved himself, but sadly that was not to be. This upsets me, he was so talented, so handsome, so young, that makes me sad!

Lana Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 10:53 PM EST

Has anyone seen "Teenage Sensation"? He stars opposite Bijou Phillips and Mischa Barton. Kinda like a darker Gossip Girl. He played a ticking-bomb ruffian, a role that comes so naturally to him, obviously. It's not even on imdb's list of movies he's made. He was beautiful, he was talented, and I hate to admit it, that now he's just another case of angels losing it in Hollywood. If only. *sigh* Your troubles are over now, Brad. Peace, brother.

NIx Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 08:08 PM EST

oh, and try and stand Jonathan Taylor Thomas, because Brad played Huck Finn like he was born to it. which he probably was.

Nix Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 08:06 PM EST

Usually I affect being inured to stuff like this, and truly, the first public thing I said after hearing about Renfro's death was "And how does Mr. Singer feel about this today?" But dammit Susman you made me bawl. I hate it, I hate it, when people don't end up the way they should, but they way they do. It's foolish, because intentions almost never work out, and everybody knew Brad had his demons, but it still upsets the hell out of me now. Oh, and thanks a lot Tim G for reminding us he was in "The Cure", now I'm weeping. You know, I try to be cool about drugs, it's a personal choice, etc., but I have very little patience with how it changes people I love or admire. And death is a very major change. Excuse me while I go have violent revenge fantasies.

Dixie Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 07:16 PM EST

I fell in love with Brad Renfro when I saw The Client at age 11. I knew he had had problems with drugs, but I hoped he would get on the road to recovery and realize his full potential as an actor. Now that will never happen. Rest in peace, Brad.

BrandonK Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

It's so weird to me that this kind of thing happens to a lot of kids who become stars...Cory Haim, Edward Furlong, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears... And then there are others who seem to grow up just fine, or at least fine enough to survive or thrive. What makes the difference?

Heather Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

Even though i'm older, i saw Brad in The Client at a particularly difficult time in my life and he touched my soul. I have followed his career since. I think i cried for 3 hours after The Cure. Even in Tom and Huck, his talent and raw vulnerability shone through. Every week i look in the "deaths" section at the back of EW, hoping not to see Brad's name. This was still such a shock. I still believed he would stay sober and become the star i know he could have been. RIP Brad. with love and thanks.

Michelle Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

I've always followed his career since we are close in age. The Client was one my favorite movies, The Cure made me cry, and Apt. Pupil made me realize he was the real deal and had a lot of promise. I had always wished he would get more recognition for his work. I'm very sad about his death.

Dylan Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

I've always admired Brad's work. Sure he had some substance problems but he seemed like a great kid otherwise and was an awesome actor. This truly sucks. My prayers go out to his family and may he rest in peace. Lova ya Brad.

Nose Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

RIP Brad. I remember thinking what a great career he had ahead of him when I saw him in Apt Pupil. It's too bad his life had to take this sad turn.

laura Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 02:34 PM EST

R.I.P Brad Renfro

DalGal Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

Very sad story. Seems like everyone around him failed him as I am sure he failed himself. What's even worse is that this will NOT be a wake-up call for the others heading down this same path.

Sad Eyes Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

I have seen a couple of Brad Renfro's films ["The Client" in the theater, "The Cure" on video] thankfully I missed "Tom & Huck"...his life should be a cautionary tale. However, we still have Lindsay Lohan & Britney Spears to go...

Snarf Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

Shame.

Anna Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

One of the first stories I read about Brad was in Premiere magazine. He was filming Tom and Huck and, in one incident, had chased his tutor around the set with a saw. He was also already experimenting with drugs. I remember hoping that someone would try to intervene on his behalf because he seemed like a tragedy waiting to happen. I'm sad but I'm not surprised.

Kris Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

Oooopppppssss! That should be write up....Seriously, "to read makes our speaking English good."

Kris Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

Great right up. So sad. It is such a waste of talent and youth. This is a first for me, one of my childhood crushes dying of an overdose (most likely cause of death). Very, very sad.

Scott K Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

Thanks for the nice words about Brad. What a talent, what a waste. We will miss you.

shawn Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

He was a rarity in his generation. He had such a depth as an actor that you couldn't help but be pulled in whenever he appeared on screen. He'll definitely be remembered as my generation's River Phoenix: a brilliant young actor that died before he could show the world what he was truly capable of.

RIP Brad.

Vicki Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 12:20 PM EST

Sad.... he's had problems for awhile though, since his early teens. Anyway, Bully is one of my favorite all time movies. I also remember having a crush on him in the Client back when I was 12.

Tim G. Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

I'll always remember Renfro as the little boy walking down the street with one shoe on from THE CURE. God that movie makes me bawl.

Stephanie T. Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

The Client was his best work. I weep for his family. I hate to say that like River before him, he made a grave decision. He took his acting ability, tossed it out the window, and CHOSE a path of self destruction. Perhaps Britney will get the message now. RIP Brad.

Lynny Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

The news stopped me in my tracks. Haven't felt sad like this since River. RIP

Ceballos Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

It's ALWAYS a shame to lose anyone who is so young (he was actually the same age I am).

Still, this is particularly sad to me because, although he certainly had his share of onscreen trouble, Renfro's talent was very apparent whenever I watched him work. It's too bad he couldn't pull himself together and he'll be missed.
